— Caleb Keeter (@Calebkeeter) October 2, 2017Courtesy of WaPo:
“I’ve been a proponent of the 2nd amendment my entire life. Until the events of last night. I cannot express how wrong I was. We actually have members of our crew with [Concealed Handgun Licenses], and legal firearms on the bus,” Keeter wrote. “They were useless.” He continued:
We couldn’t touch them for fear police might think we were part of the massacre and shoot us. A small group (or one man) laid waste to a city with dedicated, fearless police officers desperately trying to help, because of access to an insane amount of fire power.
Enough is enough.
Writing my parents and the love of my life a goodbye last night and a living will because I felt like I wasn’t going to live through the night was enough for me to realize that this is completely and totally out of hand. These rounds were just powerful enough that my crew guys just standing in close proximity of a victim shot by this f—ing coward received shrapnel wounds.
We need gun control RIGHT. NOW. My biggest regret is that I stubbornly didn’t realize it until my brothers on the road and myself were threatened by it. We are unbelievably fortunate to not be among the number of victims killed or seriously wounded by this maniac.
(Keeter is the lead guitarist for the Josh Abbott Band)
Yes, of course we need gun control, but the Republicans are still saying that it is wrong to talk about it in the wake of this most recent shooting, because it would be "insensitive" to politicize it.
The problem of course is that after a couple of weeks everybody's nerves will calm down, and nobody will feel compelled to talk about it at all. That wouldn't be goal would it?
rhetorical question, of course it is.
That's why the NRA is delaying TV ads in Virginia.
Gotta wait for the dust to settle.
According to Quartz this is the 338th mass shooting in 2017.
That is more than one mass shooting a day.
So this one band member's position on the 2nd Amendment has been changed, but for the rest of the country, who were NOT ducking bullets while people around them were murdered, this is still an academic argument.
So do we need to wait until EVERY American barely survives a mass shooting in order to see a change to our gun laws?
Because sadly even then that may not prove enough of an incentive.
Simply put, you cannot call yourself the greatest nation on earth if your citizens are being gunned down in random shootings every day.
Why is that so damn hard to understand?
Caleb Keeter's article is a stark reminder that, largely, people don't really care until it's their own ox that's gored.

FB>'As the grief shakes within me, as the numbing sensation of senseless loss engulfs my mind, I reel with the sickening knowledge that this has happened again... again... again...scores of lives cut short in a burst of gun violence - more children without parents and parents without children.
ReplyDeleteAs I contend with the sadness, another emotion wells within me, an unrelenting and abiding anger. How can we consider ourselves the greatest country on earth and allow this to happen again... and again... and again... Are we really so powerless and impotent? Those are not the qualities I have come to expect from this nation or its leaders.
I grew up in a gun culture and have owned guns. But there is a difference between common sense and senselessness. And right now many of our gun laws are senseless. The scale of carnage in Las Vegas suggests a level of firepower that has no business being in the hands of civilians.
Is it too soon to say we have been here before? Does it disrespect the memories of the most recent innocent victims? I am sure many will think so. But if not now, when? In the wake of terrorist attacks, we pledge to do whatever is necessary to protect lives in the future. Isn't this a terrorist attack? I am sure those in the audience last night felt the terror in their hearts. After plane crashes, we look at every possible source of failure or weakness and fix the system. Why should guns be different?
And one final note on last night's shooting. Most of the initial news reports didn't mention the shooter's race or religion. Could you imagine if the circumstances had been different? It's a reminder that sickness and violence is not bound to any one demographic. And we should be very careful before we fall into simplistic narratives.
There are no words or prayers we can offer to lessen the lifetimes of grief that lie ahead for those affected. But we can pledge to all do our part to unite and do our best to find ways to diminish the chances of it happening again."

These 27 Top Shrinks Think Trump Might Be Nuts
ReplyDeleteThe Goldwater Rule has long held that mental-health professionals shouldn’t diagnose from a distance. But these experts decided to speak up before it’s too late.
The president attacks the mayor of San Juan after a devastating hurricane as the death toll rises. In his maiden UN speech, he threatens North Korea with “total destruction.” His tweetstorms show a narcissistic mind obsessed with cutting down critics and igniting culture wars while ignoring the responsibilities of his office. No wonder a new poll shows that a stunning 56 percent of Americans believe Donald Trump is “not fit” to serve as president.
But while much of America has begun speaking openly about the mental state of their president, the actual professionals in the field of psychiatry are prohibited from doing so because of the gag rule imposed by the American Psychiatric Association (APA).
Until now. Twenty-seven eminent psychiatrists and psychologists—including professors from Harvard, Yale, and Stanford—have rebelled against the so-called Goldwater rule in favor of what they see as their own ethical “duty to warn” the public of the perils of being led by a president who will feed his “malignant narcissism” at any cost.
Their essays are collected in a powerful new book called The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, which hits bookstores on Oct 2. They warn that the Trump effect has created a “malignant normalcy,” a collective psychological anesthesia. It’s the kind of hush that falls before an impending hurricane or an October surprise. As comforting as this lull may feel, evidence mounts that the worst is coming.
This is not a bleached academic text. It is a kaleidoscope of vivid observations of a baffling personality. These expert observers of behavior argue that this president provides them with a vast treasure of public performances, videos, and twittered screeds on which to base their assessments of his mental state. It is not a diagnosis, but an effort to educate the public on behaviors that are well-documented as dangerous and pathological, not only by psychology but by many historical accounts of the rise of dictators.
The psychiatrists argue that objectively observable evidence of mental impairment is no different from physical infirmity, as far as meeting the intentions of the 25th amendment. **They have sent their statement of alarm about President Trump’s mental stability to every senator and House member, urging they act to form an independent expert panel to evaluate the president.**
Simultaneously, 27 representatives, all Democrats, have co-sponsored a bill to establish a “commission on presidential capacity,” including four psychiatrists, which would give Congress the authority to declare a president “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”

In an interview with the women of “The View,” comedian, actor and author Russell Brand revealed the source of his online feud with Donald Trump.
Delete...But Brand explained that the source was an interview he’d done with Trump for a documentary. “Brand: A Second Coming” was an exploration of drugs, sex, fame and the search for happiness.
“As he was talking, I kept thinking, ‘How are we in this big tower this man owns when he’s evidently so stupid,” Brand said. “I kept trying to understand it. Now, I don’t like to be unkind to people so I already feel bad about saying that. *But obviously this man practices very much in cruelty, doesn’t he? It’s like his language.”*
He went on to say that he was trying to understand it and comprehend it so that he could do jokes about it as a stand-up comedian.
“He heard that I’d said these jokes and some of them were quite cheap,” Brand admitted. “Like his hair looks like the ghost of Shredded Wheat. Not even Shredded Wheat that is alive now, but straight from the ethereal realm. I criticized him and I suppose what he’s an emblem of; an economic model of economic inequality and privilege, and now using that privilege to further disempower people to speak cruelty from the office of the president.”
Brand admitted that when Trump was running he assumed that it couldn’t actually happen, but it did. “And now we’ve got to live with those peculiar consequences.” He also said that he understands the rage that his supporters feel because they’re being disenfranchised by the majority of their leaders in government. However, he argued that the solution to the rage is not to move further apart but together as a collective group.
“He does look as though he has thin skin. Except in the jowly area. I feel like if he likes borders so much, how about have one between here and here?” Brand continued, highlighting the area of his neck.
He then admitted it was mean and he doesn’t like to be cruel. “I take that back,” he said.

Ellen Responds To Las Vegas Massacre In Most Beautiful (And Most Ellen) Way Possible
ReplyDeleteThe talk show host filmed an eight-minute long segment on Monday, just hours after at least 59 people were killed and over 500 were injured by a gunman who opened fire on a crowd attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival. The video, above, which was released on Tuesday morning, begins with a visibly emotional DeGeneres stating that her “heart is broken for everyone affected by what happened.”
While she admits that she feels “sad,” “anxious” and “helpless,” and that it’s “very easy to lose hope” during moments like these, she is adamant that “we cannot do that” because “there’s a lot more good in the world than there is bad and I continue to believe that.”
“It’s hard to do a show on a day like this,” she said. “When I wake up [on a day like] today I think, How am I going to do a show? But it’s also days like this that I appreciate my job more than ever because I get to focus and shine a light on people that do good in the world.”

Donald Trump seems addicted to violence.
ReplyDeleteIt shapes his language, politics and policies.
He revels in a public discourse that threatens, humiliates and bullies.
He has used language as a weapon to humiliate women, a reporter with a disability, Pope Francis and any political opponent who criticizes him. He has publicly humiliated members of his own cabinet and party, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions and a terminally ill John McCain, not to mention the insults and lies he perpetrated against former FBI Director James Comey after firing him.
Trump has humiliated world leaders with insulting and belittling language. He not only insulted North Korean leader Kim Jong-un with the war-like moniker “Rocket Man,” he appeared before the United Nations and blithely threatened to address the nuclear standoff with North Korea by wiping out its 25 million inhabitants.
He has attacked the mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico for pleading for help in the aftermath of a hurricane that has devastated the island and left many Puerto Ricans without homes or drinking water.
He has emboldened and tacitly supported the violent actions of white supremacists, and during the presidential campaign encouraged right-wing thugs to attack dissenters — especially people of colour. He stated that he would pay the legal costs of a supporter who attacked a black protester.
During his presidential campaign, he endorsed state torture and pandered to the spectacle of violence that his adoring crowds treated like theatre as they shouted and screamed for more.
Violence for Trump became performative, used to draw attention to himself as the ultimate tough guy. He acted as a mafia figure willing to engage in violence as an act of vengeance and retribution aimed at those who refused to buy into his retrograde nationalism, regressive militarism and nihilistic sadism.
...These are just a few examples of the many ways in which Trump repeatedly gives licence to his base and others to commit acts of violence.
What’s more, he also appears to relish representations of violence, suggesting on one occasion that it’s a good way to deal with the “fake news” media. He tweeted an edited video showing him body-slamming and punching a man with the CNN logo superimposed on his head during a wrestling match.
And recently, he retweeted an edited video from an anti-Semite’s account that showed Trump driving a golf ball into the back of Hillary Clinton’s head.

On July 1, 1993 (I still have my MUNI bus transfer from that day), there was a shooting at 101 California here in SF where my husband, then boyfriend, worked. He hid, as many did, in small unlocked/unused (except for storage boxes) law offices like so many other people did while the killer walked around shooting. Later, my husband was asked to identify Gian Luigi Ferri's body after her shot himself dead in a stairwell. My husband heard people he knew being shot nearby and breathing their last breaths. Back then, a shooting like this was so rare. It was actually called a “massacre”—today, a workplace shooting that leaves eight people left dead is nothing in comparison to events since. After this day, Diane Feinstein and others got the assault weapons ban through. It was September of 1994. In November, the Dems lost both the House and Senate, in large part because of the inanity about the 2nd Amendment and because the NRA had become the GOP’s god.

That part of Alaska was deep, deep into war and getting militarized. It was central to how Sarah got attention and McCain thought (at first) she was the real deal with military might.
Track Palin was very vital to her passing McCain vetting (not that he vetted, but he believed all the hype about the military family) or he knew he could use it and cover up the parts that were criminal. Stolen valor use to be a horrible transgression in the military. Now it is alright if they can get by with it.
Morlock admitted to what he did, how was he innocent? He talked, some would say he was the rat.
Yeah, he was sick.
Had Sarah answered his plea (when he was more innocent and wanted help to get out of war) He did the right thing to ask for her help. He could have had a different life.
The military pushed Morlock and his type back to war after they were injured, they gave them drugs and sent them back to fight. The military is partially responsible when they push soldiers to a breaking point, but the soldier that violates is not innocent. They were used and abused as can happen when you sign up for killing people.
Morlock signed up to give his life away.
When he had a moment of light he tried to get help from the good friend of the family, Gov Palin. She shunned him.
Morlock was sunk and had to go back into battle in his injured, sick and drugged condition.
The rest is history and he or his family can't really rewrite it at this time.
They aren't the brightest people, they are stuck playing loyal to Palin.
Track is Palin's son and had very special attention in the military. They lied about him from day one and made up who he was. Covering his dark side. Sarah could say he was a combat vet when he was not.
The military helped her since the Sarah and Track story was a lie they could use for recruiting while she could use it for her climb to the WH. She failed and Track is a failure they mostly have to hide. Because the lie must go on to save the military, McCain and Palin.

__ On the October 3 episode of The Weeds, Sarah Kliff, Ezra Klein, and Matt Yglesias discuss the recent mass shooting in Las Vegas and gun control policy changes that have worked to dramatically lower suicide and homicide rates in other countries.
Later Ezra, Sarah, and Matt examine Australia, a country that instituted radical reforms after a 1996 mass shooting in a tourist town called Port Arthur that left 35 people dead and another 28 injured. In the aftermath of that shooting, the Australian government introduced a program that offered to buy back people’s guns.
Through that program, the government was able to get rid of about 650,000 guns. But as Sarah notes, the program went further still, introducing a ban on automatic and semiautomatic weapons, putting in new licensing requirements, and making people wait 28 days before they purchased a gun. __
