An anonymous Missouri woman, identified only as Mary Doe in public court documents, has won a significant legal victory in Western District Court of Appeals in her aim to show that her religious beliefs are being violated by state abortion laws. The court said that her constitutional challenge presented a disputed right which includes reasonable space for disagreement and fair doubt as well. Mary Doe is also an adherent of Satanism.
Doe, an adherent of The Satanic Temple, argued her religion does not harbor the belief that conception is the beginning of life. The prerequisites, due to this belief, for an abortion procedure in Missouri are directly violating her religious freedom. The latter is protected by First Amendment. Her suit names Josh Hawley, the Missouri Attorney General, and Governor Eric Greitens. Incidentally, Doe's claims were at first thrown out by Cole County Circuit Court. She then appealed the decision.
The Satanic organization regards Satan as a personal autonomy symbol. It promotes 'rational inquiry' and compassion. The Satanists argue that the abortion restrictions imposed by Missouri, including the state's informed consent law along with the compulsory waiting period of 72 hours violate religious belief of one of the organization's members. The complaint against Missouri was filed by the Satanists in May 2015.
Oh come on, you have to love this!
Using a religious freedom argument to defeat abortion laws informed by a primitive religious world view is almost too sweet to believe.
And before any of the slack jawed morons come over here and get their panties in a twist over the fact that this woman identifies as a Satanist, remember that the Satanic Temple is really a free thinkers group who shroud themselves in religious trappings in order to defeat these archaic laws drawn up by religious nutjobs.
CHalk one for the good guys and gals.
ReplyDeleteThere is hope for the intelligent.
Hear! Hear!
DeleteI'm sure I won't be the only person to point out the change in language at HHS to promote the concept of 'Life begins at conception'.
ReplyDeleteIf this idea is enshrined into law every woman who experiences a spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) will be prosecuted for murder.
Think it can't happen? Think it can't happen here?
Historians will describe our time as a battle against the theocrats - if we win that is. If we lose we will just be another nation under draconian religious rule.
Stakes are high. We must get out the vote. We must resist. This is our test, for good or bad.
#Resistance is Patriotic.
It *has* happened here, in the 'heartland' (barf) of America.
DeleteWomen, get busy. While you can't mail actual bodily fluids to Pence, nothing wrong with inundating his office in reasonable facsimilies of used tampons and menstrual pads so he can "advise" on whether they need a legal and expensive burial or just a toss in the trash (a law Prick Pence tried to institute in Indiana.)
ReplyDeleteIndeed. And one looney tune makes regular visits to pray for trump in the oval office. The local crazy eyed bad witchy pooh Michele bachman. She claims god is directing the trump tweets and he speaks through trump. Yup, really. not sure if Kelly and kellyann IT sits in on that?

ReplyDeleteSatanists billing themselves as freethinkers? Welp, Maimonides wrote pretty extensively about Satan's purpose being to turn people away from the truth, just for starters. And in the Christian NT, Satan was no match for Jesus.
ReplyDeleteAnd what about those criminals who murder in the name of Satan? Yes, they do exist. But according to this blog post, I guess those aren't the real Satanists.
Just playing devil's advocate here, so to speak. Thank God the black-and-white pigeon-holing on this blog is only the merest shadow of free thought.
You are basing your opinion on Satanists on writings from a 12th century philosopher? Have you read the satanists web page or is that too recent for you?
DeleteYes, Grey One, I have visited the website of the man who uses the moniker Lucien Greaves, founder of the particular temple of Satan Gryphen is referring to here. Have you? Their mission and activities aren't quite as straightforward as Uncle G seems to imply here.
DeleteAnd yes, as an avid and open-minded reader, I have read Maimonides. The concept of Satan didn't originate in modern times, and he's not going away anytime soon, either.
I found the Satanists site and rules to be more pirate based with a soupçon of 'freak the straights'.
DeleteSatan, the Christian representation, is based on the Horned God of the Pagans. At least that's the results I found in my reading. Nothing brings a flock together faster than a common bogey man and the deity of the old religion makes a good scapegoat.
