Senator Jeff Flake announces his retirement while taking the opportunity to eviscerate Donald Trump.

Courtesy of Politico:

Embattled Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) will retire after his current term expires, he announced on Tuesday in a decision that further roils a 2018 Senate landscape marked by multiple Republican retirements.

Flake was one of the most vulnerable Republican senators up for reelection next year. A vocal critic of President Donald Trump throughout and since the 2016 campaign, Flake said it became clear that that opposition would make it impossible for him to get through a Republican primary.

He took to the Senate floor to deliver a full-throated denunciation of Trump.

"We must never adjust to the coarseness of our dialogue, with the tone set up at the top," Flake said. "We must never accept the deadly sundering of our country. The personal attacks, threats against principles and freedoms and institutions, and flagrant disregard for decency."

"Reckless, outrageous and undignified behavior has become excused as telling it like it is when it is actually just reckless, outrageous and undignified," Flake continued. "And when such behavior emanates from the top of our government, it is something else. It is dangerous to a democracy."

Flake was trailing in the polls against a primary challenger supported by Steve Bannon, so this is of course being seen as a victory by the Breitbart crowd.

However the Republicans also see this is as an opportunity to pick another establishment candidate without Flake's baggage (He was an early critic of Trump's.) that can compete aggressively in the primary.

As for Democrats, well this is a whole new ballgame and they are both energized and excited at the possibility of picking up a Senate seat in Arizona.

Personally I think this is yet another indication that the Republicans, who actually care about government, are simply finding it impossible to work in the toxic atmosphere created by the election of Donald Trump.

They can keep getting morons elected like Judge Roy Moore but most of them are unlikely to be found suitable for service due to so many unsavory skeltons in their closets. See: Judge Roy Moore. He's history before he even got started.

I understand his position today but that does not excuse that he enabled trump and others like him for years. Flake and McCain enabled citizen united, teabags, liar after liar. And today they have had enough? Where were they for the last 10-20-30-40 and yes 50 yrs of taxation without representation for middle America? Democrats must move into Arizona and support the Democratic party.

    1. Flake, McCain and Corker just voted with the rest of their Deplorable party to dismantle another of Obama’s regulations, this time the Consumer Protection Agency’s class action. Now consumers have no recourse but arbitration and we know where that goes. No where. The Big Boys/Bucks mostly win. That’s why they luuuuuv them the forced arbitration.

Fuck Flake. Fuck McCain. Fuck Corker.

It’s all hot air. Let them put their votes behind their mouths. Otherwise who gives a shit what they say? It’s just window dressing for the press.

I heard most of his speech and I felt better simply hearing a Republican speak up. I applaud him because Trump will humiliate and lie about him relentlessly. Flake will receive death threats fearing for his life and his family’s lives.

It may not be much but it was a small comfort to hear the words that other Senators and Congress may speak behind closed doors but do nothing within their power.

IMO Trump will act out more and worse regardless even if an intervention was held.

‘No capacity for humanity’: Nicole Wallace rips Trump for making John Kelly a ‘human shield’

MSNBC anchor and former George W. Bush communications director Nicolle Wallace slammed President Donald Trump’s White House for turning chief of staff John Kelly into a “political human shield” in the administration’s public feud with Myeshia Johnson, the pregnant mother of two whose husband, Sgt. La David Johnson was killed in Niger.

“I want to bring this back to this concept…of deflection, of projection, of a lack of irony…there’s no capacity for humanity, these do not appear to be human beings,” the former Republican White House staffer explained. “They trotted General Kelly out as a human shield last week, a political human shield to take the swings that Donald Trump wasn’t man enough to take for himself, for the disgrace––he was a disgrace last week, the way he treated the…widow of a fallen soldier.”

“They trotted Kelly out there like a human shield,” Wallace repeated.

“They don’t just dig with a shovel, they dig with power tools,” Wallace noted. “Why can’t they just stop?”

Senator Flake has probably figured out he can earn more as a lobbyist or member of a conservative think tank and get as much done as he currently is achieving in the Senate.

    OT?
"dministration has also been extremely clear about its desire to gut federal spending in every avenue of the executive branch.

    Except defense.

This is where the White House may have found a way to have its cake and eat it, too. Trump, like many Republican presidents before him, has advocated for greatly increasing the national defense budget"
" If NASA had thrown $40 million into Raptor development, a good chunk of Congress might have raised their eyebrows, and a few members might have even voiced their displeasure. But with that money going to SpaceX as an Air Force contract, no one—least of all Republicans—is likely to complain."

"As Americans we like to talk about American "values", but what are they, really? These American "values". In the age of trump, maybe most Americans aren't as decent and upstanding as we would like to believe. Maybe those "values" that we like to boast about aren't as pure and morally above board as we think they are. Maybe these so called "values" are all just a sham.

Sorry Mr. Flake, we have no moral authority. We gave that up when we elected Donald trump."<<<---XXX

  16. All hat and no cattle.

All these blowhards talk a good game but can’t match their actions to their rhetoric.

Flake, McCain and Corker all voted with the Republicans to strip another Obama legacy by overturning the Consumer Protection Agency’s regulation about suing corporation in class actions.

Now you are forced to go to arbitarion and consumers are denied the ability to untie as a group to sue for unfair practices.

So FUCK FLAKE, FUCK MCCAIN, FUCK CORKER.

I don’t give a fuck what they say. Because they still vote with all of the rest of the Deplorables.

BTW it was 50/50 and Pence broke the tie and you know which way.

They’ll fuck us over the tax bill too, you just wait. They voted themselves the ability to pass with a simple majority with a waiver in the budget and now they’ll screw us on that too.

Fuck Flake, McCain and Corker. Big bags of fetid hot air playing the crowds to distract from that big knife going into our backs.

He said he will not be complicit. Too late! The Nazi man has an upper hand with his bullying ways. And as it turns out Trump's base is of the Nazi persuasion. Hmmm. Here we go again. History repeats it's old self. Meanwhile Putin is like the Maestro as he orchestrates all this worldly chaos and plays us all like a fine tuned instrument. Pay attention world! We are coming to some bad days with evil men at the helm.
