The Mayor of San Juan was quite unimpressed with Trump's photo op in Puerto Rico.

Courtesy of Politico:

“He was insulting to the people of Puerto Rico,” Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said Tuesday night on MSNBC hours after meeting Trump face-to-face at a briefing with Puerto Rican leaders and the president. Beyond the briefing, Trump also toured damaged areas and helped distribute supplies, flicking paper towels into a crowd with the motion of a jump shot in basketball. All of it, Cruz said, was disingenuous.

“This was a PR, 17-minute meeting. There was no exchange with anybody, with none of the mayors,” the mayor said. “And in fact, this terrible and abominable view of him throwing paper towels and throwing provisions at people, it really — it does not embody the spirit of the American nation, you know?”

Particularly egregious, according to the mayor, was Trump’s remark during the briefing with Puerto Rican officials that they should “be very proud” because the death toll on the island has not spiked as it did in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, which the president said was “a real catastrophe.”

“He kind of minimized our suffering here by saying that Katrina was a real disaster, sort of implying that this was not a real disaster because not many people have died here,” Cruz said. “Well you know what? They’re dying. They don’t have the medical resources.”

Yeah I knew yesterday when Trump claimed that Mayor Cruz had "come back a long way," that he was full of shit.

I watched footage of Trump's visit yesterday in horror.

He went out of his way to minimize the devastation and to humiliate the people of Puerto Rico.

And the worst part was the Puerto Rican politicians who sat around trying to give him credibility while sacrificing their own.

This San Juan mayor seems to be the only politician on the island with any balls.

They should make her the freaking governor.

It's great to see the liberals taking guidance from, siding with, and quoting 'the great leader' of the most oppressive regime in the world. Good luck in 2020.

Puerto Rico is the most oppressive regime in the world?

" “Flashlights! You don’t need ’em anymore!”
FEMA has only restored some 7 percent of the island’s power 14 days into this disaster"
Trump’s lack of awareness or concern regarding the severity of the damage in Puerto Rico, and just how long it will take to repair, perhaps shouldn’t come as a surprise considering his Energy secretary’s best idea for rebuilding the island’s grid is to expedite the introduction of small nuclear power plants that don’t even exist."

It is funny you don't get that is exactly why she is playing her little attention games. Reminds me of when Wendy Davis wore pink shoes and all you dummies thought that she would be governor of Texas. Because pink shoes stunt lol.

    6. 2:14 and 5:55, I'm sure it warms the cockles of your raisin-sized heart to know Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas had refused to release any of the $10 billion of Texas' "rainy day fund" for post-Hurricane Harvey relief until just recently, $50 million (1/20th of the fund).

Houstonians had to wait SIX WEEKS for those beancounters to pony up - probably because hardest-hit Houston is mostly politically Democrat.

But, noooooo, of course she isn't playing political opportunist (eye roll)... I'm suuuuuure she just pulled that one happenstance out of her drawer.

You are so cynical 2:14 that you expect everyone to play a game, sorry that's Trumps MO .

I am sick of Trumps little attention games. You cant believe that someone who lives in Puerto Rico, that sees the crises every day and lives with the suffering may actually care about others. She was begging for help and she should not have to.

I am sorry that you see people dying as "Playing little
attention games" This is not a game. Trump is playing games for attention, did Trump ever promote where people could give to help in the relief effort? Of course not he just bitched about his budget making the victems look like entitled takers. American citizens may i remind you this is not a bunch of "illegals" you have such a problem with.

There was no begging necessary 9:15, it was all theater... the help was there as soon as it could be, and as best as it could be. She is basically shitting on all the federal workers that are working day and night to assist PR, all for politics.

And BTW, the island is in disarray, long before the hurricane. You ever been there?

I read comments today by people defending Trump by attacking and laying all the fault on Mayor Cruz and other Puerto Rican politicians alleging they are "corrupt", it their own damn fault their owner grids and infrastructure is old. Not one of them mentioned it was a category 5 hurricane, which would tear down power lines anywhere. I did not read such comments about the Florida Keys.

I always am surprised when problem solving and needs assessment is bypassed to play the blame game choosing who is all at fault.

I support Mayor Cruz who focused on basic human needs, distribution problems, clearly addressed loss of power, debris strewn rides, difficulty getting provisions and the overall need for more help to be sent. It is indisputable that supplies were tied up at the dock and due to fuel shortages and impassable roads trucks on the island did not pick up and deliver supplies in rural and mountainous areas.

The mayor pleaded for more help. She never said nor insinuated that FEMA or the military nor Trump did nothing.

Hurricane Harvey: For Hurricane Harvey, FEMA had supplies and personnel positioned in Texas before the storm made landfall on August 25. Within days, the number of FEMA employees, other federal agencies, and the National Guard deployed topped 31,000, FEMA said. In addition, FEMA supplied 3 million meals and 3 million liters of water to Texas to be distributed to survivors.
Hurricane Irma: Even more federal personnel responded to Hurricane Irma when it made landfall in Florida on September 10. More than 40,000 federal personnel, including 2,650 FEMA staff, were in place by September 14. In addition, FEMA had transferred 6.6 million meals and 4.7 million liters of water to states in the Southeast after Irma as of the 14th.
Hurricane Maria: By comparison, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have seen much fewer personnel since Hurricane Maria hit, according to FEMA. In a tweet on Monday, FEMA said that more than 10,000 federal staff were on the ground in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands assisting search and rescue and recovery efforts.

    BBC:
Puerto Rico: Trump paper towel-throwing 'abominable'

The mayor of Puerto Rico's capital, San Juan, has described Donald Trump's visit to the hurricane-hit island as "insulting" and called him a "miscommunicator-in-chief".

Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz described his televised meeting with officials as a "PR, 17-minute meeting".

The sight of him throwing paper towels to people in the crowd was "terrible and abominable", she added.

Mr Trump tweeted it had been a "great day" in Puerto Rico.

But he also took another swipe at the reporting of his trip.

I will be landing in Las Vegas shortly to pay my respects with @FLOTUS Melania. Everyone remains in our thoughts and prayers.

Screw you and screw Melania. There's only one FLOTUS and that is the woman with a big heart, lots of class and beauty and that would be Michelle Obama. Melania is so ashamed to be seen with her husband she always has to wear sunglasses.

I am tired of hearing about prayers, hate to tell ya prayers don't pay the bills, prayers don't provide "miracles" like Jesus is going to come down and turn wine into drinkable water.

Every damn time something like this happens it's the standard reply it's cold comfort for those hurting unless your religeous. I want to hear about a game plan, i want to know details, now inspire me with an expectation of how Puerto Rico will be rebuilt because God is not going to do it.I am so sick of hollow words thrown out by politians like a cheap roll of paper towels, they all say the same crap for every disaster that happens. Work the problem idiots.

You know what hope is, what inspires? A President who gives a timeline, a President that makes people feel that after he leaves, after his photo op, he is on top of things. A real leader does not throw paper towels, a real leader gets down in the mud, a real First Lady dresses like a someone who expects to.

She wears sunglasses because all she has ever known is how to look, posing all the time and that is her worth. Teach your children a real value system because if you have young kids this is the example they are seeing. It's bad right now.

No more platitudes to mask incompetence. No more thinking giving is a sign of weakness instead of basic damn decency.

If i hear one more "Our thoughts and prayers" line from anyone ever again it will be one time too many. Step up Trump. What's the game plan? Comfort is knowing this needs to be treated like of act of war by nature and how this is handled gives our enemies a real glance into our competence to handle a major catastrophe.

Look at her, Melania stands there posing like a prop. She never opened her mouth so what was the purpose of her being there except for the Daily Mail to comment on her fashion choice.I was so impressed by her tight white pants she wore and what the hell is it with her and her sunglasses? Does she get a kickback for wearing them?Good God if her eyes get anymore squinty she couldn't see! She wears them to protect her latest eye lift.Priorities people. There is a reason she wears them.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous8:00 PM

She wears them to hide. She can't stand Donny and she hates being FLOTUS. Her face, even with the sunglasses, says "I don't want to be here."

You know why Melania hardly ever opens her mouth it's because after being in America 20 years she still has a hard time speaking English. She was a nude model and we are supposed to expect her to care about or have a lot of feeling about a Country she was not even born into? Please, don't sell me a line of bull. If Michelle Obama had nude pics for all the world to see Rebublicans would never shut up about it! So spread it! The so called conservative party wants to shove an escort on us and suddenly it's just fine. The hypocripsy is astounding.

I don't even have words on Trump's behavior anymore. But we saw this coming where all the rich would run our country. So I guess it is throwing paper towels at us and thinking that fixes things. That's what a supposedly great country has come to. No more egocentric feelings for us. If only you are a white, christian republican aka the third Reich.
