Donald Trump's nominee for the Department of Agriculture’s chief scientist has withdrawn his name from consideration. No, not because he was completely unqualified, because of the Russia investigations.

Courtesy of WaPo:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s chief scientist nominee, Sam Clovis withdrew his name from consideration Wednesday amid revelations that he was among top officials on the Trump campaign who was aware of efforts by foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos to broker a relationship between the campaign and Russian officials.

Court documents unsealed Monday revealed that Papadopoulos pleaded guilty in early October to making false statement to FBI investigators about his contacts with foreigners claiming to have high-level Russian connections. In August 2016, Clovis encouraged Papadopoulos to organize an “off the record” meeting with Russian officials, according to court documents. “I would encourage you” and another foreign policy adviser to the campaign to “make the trip, if it is feasible,” Clovis wrote. The meeting did not ultimately take place.

In a letter to the president Wednesday, Clovis explained that he did not think he could get a fair consideration from the Senate, which was slated to hold a hearing on his appointment on Nov. 9.

“The political climate inside Washington has made it impossible for me to receive balanced and fair consideration for this position,” wrote Clovis, who currently serves as USDA’s senior White House adviser. “The relentless assaults on you and your team seem to be a blood sport that only increases with intensity each day.”

That is not the "political climate" you smell, that is justice coming to get you.

I would think that the Washington politicians would learn a lesson from Jeff Sessions, and simply not confirm any of Trump's nominees until they are certain they did not work with the Russians or are not about to be subpoenaed by Robert Mueller or one of the other Russian investigators.

It would not look particularly good for the Washington Republicans especially to allow a Trump nominee through only to learn later that he was a bag man for the Kremlin.

Trump nominates some club members to plum government jobs

When President Trump this week tapped Florida insurance executive Robin Bernstein to serve as the nation’s next ambassador to the Dominican Republic, he wasn’t just giving a business associate and longtime supporter a plum Caribbean assignment.

Bernstein also is a founding member of his private Florida club, Mar-a-Lago.

A USA TODAY review finds that Trump has installed at least five people who have been members of his clubs to senior roles in his administration, ranging from Bernstein and Callista Gingrich, the nation’s new ambassador to the Vatican, to Adolfo Marzol, a member of the Trump National Golf Club in suburban Washington, who serves as a senior adviser at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Presidents often name campaign donors and close allies to administration posts, particularly prized diplomatic postings in cosmopolitan European capitals, such as Paris and London, and the tourist playgrounds of the West Indies.

But never in modern history has a president awarded government posts to people who pay money to his own companies.

Trump’s USDA Pick With Ties To Russia Investigation Withdraws Nomination

Sam Clovis was poised to become the USDA’s chief scientist, despite having no science background.

...In an Oct. 17 letter obtained by The Washington Post, Clovis admitted to having no hard background in the subject.

Clovis, who possesses a bachelor’s degree in political science, an MBA degree and a doctorate in public administration, repeatedly acknowledged his lack of background in the hard sciences when responding to Stabenow.

“Please list all graduate level courses you have taken in natural science,” the second of 10 questions requested.

    “None,” Clovis replied.

“Please list all membership and leadership roles you have held within any agricultural scientific, agricultural education, or agricultural economic organizations,” the third question read.

    “None,” Clovis replied.

“Please describe any awards, designations, or academic recognition you have received specifically related to agricultural science,” the fourth question read.

    “None,” Clovis replied.

Then came the fifth question, which asked, “What specialized training or significant experience, including certifications, do you have in agricultural research?”

He answered: “I bring 17 years of agriculture experience integrated into both undergraduate- and graduate-level courses throughout my teaching career as reflected in my curriculum vitae as well as the Committee’s questionnaire.” And having twice run for statewide office, he added that “one cannot be a credible candidate in that state without significant agricultural experience and knowledge.”

Clovis, an early Trump supporter, is a birther conspiracy theorist who described former President Barack Obama and his black and Latino Cabinet members as “racists.” He once accused progressives in a since-deleted blog post of “enslaving” minorities, called black leaders “race traders” and said Obama was a “Maoist” with “communist” roots. The blog can still be seen on the Internet archive, the Wayback Machine.

Like many others in the Trump administration, he also rejects the science behind climate change.

Donald Trump appears to have just discovered that he isn’t a dictator and doesn’t have complete control of the FBI and Justice Department.

According to a new report from The Hill, the president said he is “frustrated” that he isn’t “supposed to be involved” in overseeing any potential investigation into his former opponent, Hillary Clinton.

“The saddest thing, is because I’m the president of the United States, I’m not supposed to be involved in the Justice Department,” Trump said in an interview, apparently just discovering that his position does have limits. “I am not supposed to be involved in the FBI. I’m not supposed to be doing the kinds of things I would love to be doing and I’m very frustrated by it.”

Donald Trump’s Twitter account broke down on Thursday night, and the world immediately rejoiced – for five minutes, at least.

According to several reports, it was unclear what caused the brief outage of Trump’s page, which boasts over 40 million followers, and Twitter has yet to explain whether the account was hacked or it was a technical glitch.

Either way, it was a glorious five minutes for humankind.

As the Verge pointed out on Thursday, “During this time, the president was unable to tweet insults, boasts, odd syntax, or misinformation about terrorism.”

The reaction from the internet more broadly was nothing short of priceless:

  7. Speaking of unqualified, all 14 members (one abstention) of the ABA have deemed Trump’s nomination for circuit court judge for Nebraska to be UNQUALIFIED. Among the many reason given were that he lacks the temperament and allows his personal beliefs to color his judgement. But you know McConnell. He’s going to push him through anyway.

    1. https://www.politico.com/story/2017/10/30/aba-trump-judicial-nominee-not-qualified-244327

"The letter did not elaborate. But a separate, eight-page statement from the ABA detailed numerous concerns from Grasz's colleagues in Nebraska about his fitness to serve on the federal bench — including whether Grasz was committed to judicial precedent and if he would be "unable to separate his role as an advocate from that of a judge."

Some of his colleagues interviewed by the ABA as part of its evaluation process said Grasz's behavior was "gratuitously rude." The bar association also noted that a 1999 article Grasz wrote argued that the lower courts should be able to overrule Supreme Court decisions on abortion rights because “abortion jurisprudence is, to a significant extent, a word game."

"In sum, the evaluators and the Committee found that temperament issues, particularly bias and lack of open-mindedness, were problematic," Pam Bresnahan, the chair of the ABA's standing committee that reviews nominees, said in the statement. "The evaluators found that the people interviewed believed that the nominee's bias and the lens through which he viewed his role as a judge colored his ability to judge fairly.""

Trump isn't really nominating any of these judges. The names are being given to him from the ultra-right wing like the Heritage Foundation.

"The Republican-controlled Senate has already installed four of Trump’s appellate picks and is on track to confirm four more in the next several days, starting with Amy Coney Barrett, a Notre Dame law professor who has been nominated for the 7th Circuit."

      https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-judge-nominee-torn-apart-230254295.html

"“I assume you’re keenly aware that you are the first circuit court nominee since 2006 to receive a unanimous not qualified rating”, Rhode Island Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse said.

“That is my understanding, Senator”, Mr Grasz replied, though he said “I do respectfully disagree with the result”.

The ABA gave Mr Grasz a failing grade after interviewing hundreds of lawyers and judges who had interacted with him, according to a lengthy statement from the chair of the organization’s Standing Committee on the Judiciary. There was a recurring theme: they said his political beliefs would make him unable to be impartial."

"Those biases include a long record of opposing abortion rights, Democratic senators charged, and critics argue Mr. Grasz has fought to stifle LGBT rights. Minnesota Democrat brought up a Mr. Grasz authoring a legal opinion that warned about the “grave danger” of Nebraska recognizing same-sex marriages."

  9. Robert Mercer is trying to distance himself from Bannon, Yiannopoulos and Breitbart. Unfortunately it's too late. He is too closely tied to Cambridge Analytical. Gee, where have we heard that before?

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/bob-mercer-prominent-trump-backer-180258100.html

"Republican mega-donor Robert Mercer, a billionaire with close ties to President Donald Trump, is stepping down from his position as chief executive officer of the New York investment firm Renaissance Technologies. The 71-year-old Mercer is also selling his personal stake in the pro-Trump website Breitbart News to his daughters.

He announced his decision on Thursday in a letter to investors that also condemned white supremacists, distanced himself from former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, and declared he was mistaken for supporting alt-right hero Milo Yiannopoulos."

"After initially backing the presidential bid of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, he and his daughter, Rebekah Mercer, poured resources into efforts to help elect Trump last fall. They are also major backers of Breitbart News, which is led by Bannon, Trump's ex-chief strategist."

"The development comes as another Mercer-backed company, the data firm Cambridge Analytica, faces new scrutiny for possible links to the federal probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 president election."

"Renaissance has also been locked in a years-long dispute with the IRS after a Senate investigation determined that the firm used complex financial instruments to avoid paying nearly $7 billion in taxes."

Gee, another Trump pal caught dodging is patriotic duty to pay taxes.

And since Mercer is selling his interests in Breitbart to his daughters, he's not distancing himself from them all that much. He doesn't like being called a white supremacist by association. I'd say that horse has left the barn.

Over a decade ago, Republicans invented the use of the word "Democrat" as an adjective, as in "Democrat Senator" or "Democrat bill". They did this because it rhymed with "bureaucrat", and I'm sure they liked the fact that it ended in "rat". All of which means that thinking progressives and liberals should never use this construction, but instead should use correct English and use "Democrat" only as a noun. If you catch yourself using "Democrat" like a Republican, you're only making them happy.

      To sum up:
      "Democrat" is a noun.
      "Democratic" is an adjective.
      "Republican" is an idiot.

You can always spot the idiots by their bad spelling and worse grammar. That is if the content didn't blatantly scream at you MORON.

U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro said opening statements would begin next Tuesday in a case that has become a rallying cry for activists challenging U.S. government authority in the American West."

You know Pruitt isn't going to make that scofflaw pay up all his back fees owed. He'll probably forgive them.

"Bundy is accused of conspiring to use the threat of force to prevent a court-ordered impoundment of his cattle, which the government said trespassed on federal land after the rancher had refused for 20 years to pay his grazing fees and assessments.

Hundreds of followers, many heavily armed, rallied to Bundy's ranch near Bunkerville, Nevada, about 75 miles (120 km) northeast of Las Vegas, demanding that his livestock be returned. Outnumbered law enforcement officers ultimately retreated rather than risk bloodshed. No shots were ever fired."

Isn't that last bullshit? Didn't one of these seditionists fire on a federal officer?

"The two Bundy sons, Ammon and Ryan, were later acquitted of criminal charges stemming from the takeover in Oregon.

They are now standing trial with their father and co-defendant Ryan Payne, who prosecutors describe as a militia activist from Montana. Another co-defendant pleaded guilty on Oct. 6 to conspiracy and faces a possible six-year prison term."

Jesus Christ, what qualified this man for the position anyway?
Is Francie Havermeister available? She at least had "a childhood love of cows" on her resume.
Franci Havemeister, one of several of Palin’s childhood friends tapped for leadership jobs, heads the state agriculture division. A former real estate agent, she was ridiculed in Alaska after it was reported that she had cited among her qualifications for the job a childhood love of cows.

Every time I think of that phrase on Havermeyers resume, I picture Sarah yucking it up with all her friends and donors she paled in key positions after her election. Discussions go something like this:
Sarah: "hey, Francie, you can absolutely head te state agriculture board. Listen, the pains in t ass in Juneau are asking for your resume for your file. Just throw someting on there like "you loved cows as a kid" so it can be official. No one can stop me anyway so who cares what you say!

Clovis is simply too dumb for the job. I think he was forced to withdraw because even the Republicans saw how incompetent he was for the job which specifies a genuine background in science. I'm sure they'll find some executive in a company that makes poultry feed who at least had a BS in some kind of science, other than political science. He'll be a billionaire who also has relationships with Russian oligarchs; that will please Trump.

"ABC News is confirming that the Trump White House didn’t know Sam Clovis had testified in the grand jury until reading about it in the news."

Looks like the Wite House might have been blindsided by Sam Clovis Grand Jury appearance.
