The white man's government, often using religion as a bludgeon, tore families apart and demanded that native children only call each other by the Biblical names given to them by Christian missionaries/educators and were punished for speaking their own language, or for being slow to adapt to western culture.
The destruction of the native people's sense of identity and connection to their culture was horrific, and is often cited as one of the main causes for suicide and alcoholism even among today's population.
This shame that Prime Minister Trudeau speaks of is shame that should be shared among the people of Alaska, as well as the people living in the Lower 48.
Our ancestors all participated in the destruction of the history and culture of the people that were here when we arrived, and we have yet to really make amends for what we did.
I am so proud of our Prime Minister. Unfortunately, not everyone feels the same way about this apology. So much hate being shown toward this man by right wing Canadians. Makes me ashamed for them.

ReplyDeleteThe current Bureau of Indian Affairs needs a complete overhaul in terms of policy and procedure.
I think the USA should make serious reparations to all our native tribes, based on absolute genocidal murder, rape, and theft of their lands by our armed forces.

ReplyDeleteSome days are far worse than others. There are times I have to force myself to disconnect all devices and stop listening - because it causes me to feel a lack of hope for our future followed by an intense, red hot, rage towards the dotard and dread over how bad is this going to get......
I fear we've already fallen to far down that slippery slope and our government is now partially controlled by Putin - I know that probably sounds insane to most of you. It even sounds insane to me! But maybe not...
Have any of you EVER witnessed this level of insanity in our WH?! Have you EVER witnessed an American president embrace Russia and blatantly disregard/damage/destroy the foundations of our democracy?
Have you been paying attention to the number of republicans who're announcing they're leaving at the end of their term? The Republican Party is being destroyed by their own cannibalism.
And there's a reason why they're choosing to leave in record numbers. That's what scares me the most. Aside from the fact the dotard is an effin POS, why would politicians (who love the perks and cushy job) decide to give it all up over an asshole who won't be there forever? I'm so disgusted with the DNC and those D politicians who should've been raging, shouting and loudly protesting the despicable actions of the dotard and his merry band of russian misfits!! I don't think I've ever seen you miss a day - unless I just didn't notice? I just know the first thing I look for in the morning is your blog with the newest revelations and your take on them.
