Despite what conservatives would have you believe it was not the Christopher Steele dossier that started the Russia investigation, it was the "coffee boy."

Courtesy of the New York Times:

During a night of heavy drinking at an upscale London bar in May 2016, George Papadopoulos, a young foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, made a startling revelation to Australia’s top diplomat in Britain: Russia had political dirt on Hillary Clinton.

About three weeks earlier, Mr. Papadopoulos had been told that Moscow had thousands of emails that would embarrass Mrs. Clinton, apparently stolen in an effort to try to damage her campaign.

Exactly how much Mr. Papadopoulos said that night at the Kensington Wine Rooms with the Australian, Alexander Downer, is unclear. But two months later, when leaked Democratic emails began appearing online, Australian officials passed the information about Mr. Papadopoulos to their American counterparts, according to four current and former American and foreign officials with direct knowledge of the Australians’ role.

The hacking and the revelation that a member of the Trump campaign may have had inside information about it were driving factors that led the F.B.I. to open an investigation in July 2016 into Russia’s attempts to disrupt the election and whether any of President Trump’s associates conspired.

If Mr. Papadopoulos, who pleaded guilty to lying to the F.B.I. and is now a cooperating witness, was the improbable match that set off a blaze that has consumed the first year of the Trump administration, his saga is also a tale of the Trump campaign in miniature. He was brash, boastful and underqualified, yet he exceeded expectations. And, like the campaign itself, he proved to be a tantalizing target for a Russian influence operation.

Kind of hard to label this whole thing a hoax, if it started because one of your operatives started bragging about your campaign's Russia contacts during a night of binge drinking.

No wonder the Trump Administration wanted to label Papadopoulos a glorified "coffee boy."

And now that he is working with the Mueller investigation he in fact may prove to be the key to this whole thing.

The internet has already blown up over these new revelations, and that has led to some interesting tweets:
Man, 2018 is going to be awesome!

Trump's ass will be grass in 2018 with all the facts that will be forthcoming.

Can hardly wait to hear and see the fiasco - except for the fact it will be harmful to the running of our country.

Trump will be impeached or he'll quit - he'll have no other options! And, the majority of Americans will push for either one of the two!

George Papadopoulos Walks Into A Bar, Tells An Australian Spy He Is Colluding With Russia, Basically

...Did the Australian write it off as some drunken douchebro making shit up? Well, who wouldn’t! But two months later when those emails started appearing online, the Australians dialed up their buddies in the US Government and said, “Oy, Mate! We thought the lad was just taking the piss. But turns out he’s fair dinkum! Might want to have a looksee, right?” Actual quote! (Not actual quote.)

    Robert Mueller strikes back

...While the New York Times has done extensive reporting here on a number of aspects of the Papadopoulos story, make no mistake: the detail about him mouthing off while drunk had to have come from the FBI itself. Moreover, the FBI wouldn’t have leaked this information to the media without Mueller signing off on it. The timing makes fairly clear that Mueller is putting this out there specifically to counter the Republican Party’s sudden false claim that the investigation originated from the dossier.

Remarkably, this means Robert Mueller and the FBI have been sitting on this detail about George Papadopoulos from the start. They’re only letting this particular cat out of the bag at this time for strategic reasons. This comes after they managed to keep the arrest of Papadopoulos secret for four months before strategically revealing that as well. Mueller and the FBI have been several steps ahead all along.

Robert Mueller is investigating Trump-Russia election rigging in Michigan and Wisconsin. Here’s why.

...Did Russia tell Manafort that it was rigging Michigan for Trump? Did Manafort then tell Trump to go campaign there at the last minute, as cover for when he magically “won” the state? Keep in mind that Trump spent his time in Michigan targeting black voters, who were obviously never going to vote for him. This wasn’t an attempt at winning any votes. It was an attempt at creating a plausible explanation for an illegitimate victory in the state. But this was just the beginning.

Well before election day, Steve Bannon privately told someone at the Hollywood Reporter that he knew Trump would win Michigan (link). So Trump’s campaign chairman and his campaign CEO both somehow “knew” Trump would win a state that by any possible measure, he appeared to have no chance of winning. It gets uglier.

Papadopoulos, Not Dossier, Sparked Russia Investigation

...It all began, as so many memorable tales do, with a night of “heavy drinking at an upscale London bar.” It was May of 2016, and Papadopoulos was knocking back some Pimm’s Cups (we can only imagine) with Australia’s top diplomat in the United Kingdom when he decided to divulge some very interesting information: Russia was in possession of damaging information about Hillary Clinton.

First off, Michael Schmidt is an adept investigator who has helped report on several important stories, including an expose on the Haditha massacre in Iraq, that Trump asked Comey to end the investigation of Michael Flynn, Bill O’Reilly’s sexual harassment, several sports scandals including the ones at FIFA. ‘Dangerous’ or ‘amazing,’ Trump’s first year was eventful for Alaska

Fans and critics of President Donald Trump agree on one thing: For better or for worse, his first year in office left a huge impact on Alaska and set the stage for bigger change to come.

To environmentalists' alarm, Trump helped unlock the door to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, opened a path for mining at the Pebble prospect and moved to roll back Obama-era restrictions.

Others appreciate many of the changes, saying they could help Alaska's economy, struggling with the nation's highest unemployment and massive government deficits.

Gov. Bill Walker said Wednesday the Trump administration has helped the state advance resource issues critical to Alaska's future, such as drilling in the Arctic refuge coastal plain. Members of the president's cabinet have provided significant help and access for state officials, he said.

The Trump administration has also shown support for Alaska's $43 billion gas export project, Alaska LNG, Walker said. On the president's trade mission to Beijing in November, Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping watched Walker sign a deal that might lead to a major Chinese investment in the project.

"This sort of progress speaks for itself and underscores the key role Alaska plays in America's present and future," Walker said.

Conservation groups have vowed to mount fierce opposition to Trump's actions in Alaska. But they acknowledge he's made strides in meeting his pro-development goals here.

"Some people have said no state has been impacted more than Alaska," said Lois Epstein, Arctic program director for The Wilderness Society.

She said the Trump administration has "targeted" the state for maximum oil drilling on federal lands.

The changes have been administrative and legal so far, but Epstein said they're significant. The president has laid the groundwork for widespread industrial access, a big shift from the balanced approach of the past that removed some sensitive areas from leasing, she said.

A key moment came last week when Trump signed legislation opening ANWR's coastal plain to oil drilling, a first for congressional Republicans after 40 years of attempts.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, authored the legislation that was included in the tax bill. It allows the first-ever lease sale in the refuge coastal plain, within four years. Murkowski has said any activity there must clear all environmental hurdles.

"I'm not saying there will be drilling tomorrow by any means," Epstein said. "But now you have a completely different legal framework governing the refuge. That's a huge change."

The Trump administration has also taken steps toward one day allowing drilling on currently off-limits acreage in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska and the U.S. Arctic Ocean, Epstein said.

No place in Alaska is safe from Trump, said Andy Moderow, Alaska Wilderness League state director.

He is moving to undo "a lot of decisions that took years to make following a lot of public process," Moderow said.

That includes the Pebble copper and gold prospect that had appeared dead under President Barack Obama, after his Environmental Protection Agency heard public concerns that it would devastate the Bristol Bay salmon fishery. Trump's EPA has lifted the resistance. The project is now advancing with a scaled-back plan critics still fiercely oppose.

Warning: Donald Trump Is America’s Slobodan Milošević

It’s a popular parlor and social media game these days to compare Donald Trump to various dictators. This is tempting, given our 45th president’s indulging in authoritarian habits like rage-tweeting at Federal agencies he dislikes, or showing disregard for the rule of law when it gets in his way. Americans are unaccustomed to casual flirtations with dictatorial-sounding memes like crushing CNN bloodily with Trump’s shoe, and many of them never want to normalize such conduct.

More hysterical anti-Trumpers jump immediately to Adolf Hitler, a ridiculous comparison as well as a violation of Godwin’s Law that says more about them than President Trump. Some prefer Benito Mussolini, who like Trump had a pronounced absurdist side as a dictator manquĂ© who never accomplished much of substance. A more recent Italian leader, Silvio Berlusconi, seems a better comparison, since like Trump he boasted luridly of his sexual conquests and acted like the louche, ineffectual billionaire he was. However, Berlusconi never really set out to do much of anything except gain power, whereas Trump preaches nonstop about his alleged desire to Make America Great Again.

The best comparison is one that won’t be too familiar to many Americans and is frankly disturbing. The dictator whom Donald Trump most closely resembles is Slobodan Milošević, the Serbian strongman who pushed Yugoslavia off the cliff over a quarter-century ago, unleashing wars and genocide, then died in The Hague in 2006 while on trial for war crimes. Although Milošević was front-page news throughout the 1990s, since his death he has faded from Western consciousness. Therefore, it’s worthwhile briefly revisiting Milošević, since his similarities to Trump are startling.

Hitler, in his own way, was a genius. he took the German people slowly into his maw. his manipulations were well thought out and well done. his biggest mistake was invading Russia.up until 1939 or so he was a perfect dictator. but his craziness caught up to him. trump cannot do as well as Hitler any day. i don't admire Hitler. credit is due where credit is do. Hitler now paints roses in hell. may trump join him soon.
