Donald Trump Jr. refused on Wednesday to provide a congressional committee details of a July telephone conversation with his father about a meeting last year at which Trump campaign officials had expected to receive damaging information from the Russian government about Hillary Clinton.
Testifying in a closed session before the House Intelligence Committee, Mr. Trump claimed that his conversation over the summer with his father, two days after The New York Times disclosed the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower in Manhattan, was protected under attorney-client privilege because lawyers for both men were on the call.
What, if anything, Donald J. Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting as a presidential candidate — and his role in drafting a misleading statement about it once he was president and it became public — are key questions for the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, who is investigating Russian interference in the election.
The problem with that whole attorney client privilege thing is that it really does not protect Junior in this situation.
Here let the venerable John Dean explain it:
If anybody would know about the limitations of the attorney client privilege it would be John Dean.Donald Trump Jr. claimed attny-client privilege in today before the House Intel Committee re discussions with his father based on the apparent fact an attny was present. Problem: (1) Jr. has no such privilege; (2) Congress does not recognize the privilege even when it exists.— John Dean (@JohnWDean) December 7, 2017
And why is this important?
Courtesy of Mother Jones:
During eight hours of questioning by the House intelligence committee on Wednesday, Donald Trump Jr. acknowledged that he and his father had discussed news of his controversial 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer after the New York Times revealed the secret sitdown this summer. But he refused to disclose the contents of their conversations.
Trump Jr. “acknowledged having discussed the June 9 meeting and the emails that went into establishing that meeting after those emails became public,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the intelligence committee, told reporters after Trump Jr.’s interview with the panel.
“He acknowledged discussing that meeting with his father.”
The admission by his Trump’s eldest son raises the question of how closely the Trumps coordinated on their response to the bombshell revelations and could bolster the case that President Trump participated in an effort to craft a false public explanation for the Trump Tower meeting. Trump Jr.’s initial statement about the meeting, reportedly dictated by his father on Air Force One during a July 8 flight from Germany, inaccurately claimed that the discussion focused on adoption.
So finding out what was said during that phone call would likely prove that Trump and Junior conspired to cover up what that meeting was about, which of course we now know had really nothing to do with Russian adoptions.
And the kicker is that I would bet my house that Robert Mueller already knows exactly what Donnie and his son talked about that day, and is simply waiting for the proper moment to spring it on them in court.

I hope Al Franken get a slot on MSNBC -- he would be a great interviewer...if any GOP would go on his show. HE would not let them wiggle out of giving an answer.
DeleteThis is what the Republicans are really up to
ReplyDeletet isn’t easy watching the country you love fall down a black hole from which it is not likely to emerge, but that is precisely what happened this past week with the Senate passage of the so-called “tax reform” bill. Bernie Sanders spoke for many when he said it will “go down in history as one of the worst, most unfair pieces of legislation ever passed.”
To which I’d add, not only the worst legislation, but also the most radically transformative passed in our lifetimes. The bill seems to have something to hurt every American, except for the wealthy. It raises taxes on most middle-income wage earners over the long haul, eliminates the individual mandate for health care (which will send insurance premiums soaring) and allows oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The House version removes deductions for large health care expenses and compels graduate students to pay taxes on tuition waivers, though the Senate version retains both. Speaking of the health care provisions alone, former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers predicted millions would die.

Paul Ryan Cut Taxes On Rich So He Can Fuck Grandma Millie.
DeletePaul Ryan is pretty chuffed about the trillion-dollar hole the GOP tax bill will blow in the federal budget over the next 10 years, so even though the bill hasn’t yet made it out of the conference committee, he’s already looking forward to the cuts America will absolutely have to make to Medicare, Medicaid, and — maybe — Social Security starting next year because we’ll have so much darn debt. In an interview on talk radio, the House speaker said it’s essential that we start chopping up the social safety net because we can’t afford the old or the poor to hold back America’s rich people anymore:
“We’re going to have to get back next year at entitlement reform, which is how you tackle the debt and the deficit,” Ryan said during an appearance on Ross Kaminsky’s talk radio show. “… Frankly, it’s the health care entitlements that are the big drivers of our debt, so we spend more time on the health care entitlements — because that’s really where the problem lies, fiscally speaking.”
Ryan also said he thinks he’s making progress in convincing Donald Trump to “rein in” Medicare, although he didn’t explicitly mention that Trump had promised during the campaign that — unlike other Republicans — he would never, ever cut Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid. Obviously, Trump’s willingness to flush Medicaid during the ACA repeal debate made the point that his campaign promises were lies, so apart from un-American journalists pointing out what Trump repeatedly said, no one really cares.
Ryan did at least acknowledge there was little chance of slashing Social Security, since Senate rules won’t let Congress make changes to that program through the reconciliation process that was used to pass the tax cuts and to try to kill Obamacare. Nonetheless, Marco Rubio has already said Social Security should go on the chopping block as well as Medicare, as long as it’s only slashed for people who aren’t yet retired and receiving benefits.
Ryan also signaled that when he says “reform,” he’s really talking about some kind of Medicare privatization scheme, possibly through block grants:

The GOP has included a very strange clause in their proposed tax plan.
DeleteHidden among massive corporate tax breaks is a provision allowing families to open 529 educational savings accounts for "unborn children" – essentially college plans for fetuses.
This dangerous "personhood" language needs to be highlighted. The conversation about when life begins belongs with our scientists, our clergy, and our families. The last place it belongs is in our tax code.
So -- having an abortion, for any reason, would be murder, and thus all abortion could be banned. wow, just wow. could happen.

"On weekends, when his parents drove up to see him, they would chaperone a pretty young woman. Trump would promenade her around the campus in full view of the cadet corps. The cumulative effect of this pantomime was that Trump was designated “Ladies’ Man” in a graduation yearbook photo.
The designation was no more meaningful than his position as the leader of the drill team." {When he didn't have to collect the rent weekend with Fred}
