Vox takes a hard look at Trump's New York Times interview and comes away with the belief that something is seriously wrong with the president.

I already shared with you my thoughts on this bizarre interview down below.

A number of other news outlets have also given their impressions, none of them very good.

However Ezra Klein of Vox News seems almost shaken by what he read in the interview:

The president of the United States is not well. That is an uncomfortable thing to say, but it is an even worse thing to ignore.

This is nothing new as a lot of people, including licensed psychologists, have suggested that Trump is likely mentally ill.

However Klein seems to be really confronting that possibility for the first time here.

And he gives a a number of examples from the interview to support his concern.

Here is just one of them that I also found quite shocking:

As for Trump’s contention that “it’s been proven that there is no collusion,” it’s hard to even know how to begin responding to that. In recent months, Trump’s former campaign manager and national security adviser have both been charged with crimes by Robert Mueller, and the investigation is not just ongoing but apparently widening in its scope and ferocity. Yet here is Trump’s take:

"I saw Dianne Feinstein the other day on television saying there is no collusion. She’s the head of the committee. The Republicans, in terms of the House committees, they come out, they’re so angry because there is no collusion. So, I actually think that it’s turning out — I actually think it’s turning to the Democrats because there was collusion on behalf of the Democrats. There was collusion with the Russians and the Democrats. A lot of collusion."

Sen. Feinstein has not said that she, or any of the ongoing investigations, has concluded that there was no collusion. What she has said is that investigators believe Trump may have obstructed justice in his efforts to derails inquiries into collusion:

"The [Senate] Judiciary Committee has an investigation going as well and it involves obstruction of justice and I think what we're beginning to see is the putting together of a case of obstruction of justice."

It speaks to Trump’s habits of mind, to the sycophantic sources from which he prefers to get his news, that he heard something Feinstein said and has come to believe she has absolved him — yet misses the actual thing she said that threatens him.

Essentially it appears that Trump is not simply rejecting news that he finds critical of him, but is actually unable to even hear that news.

We have heard that Trump's daily briefings are shaped so as not to unduly upset him, but it really seems likely that even if he heard facts that displeased him he may not be able to absorb them or ascertain their meaning.

Here is how Klein ends the post:

This is the president of the United States speaking to the New York Times. His comments are, by turns, incoherent, incorrect, conspiratorial, delusional, self-aggrandizing, and underinformed. This is not a partisan judgment — indeed, the interview is rarely coherent or specific enough to classify the points Trump makes on a recognizable left-right spectrum. As has been true since he entered American politics, Trump is interested in Trump — over the course of the interview, he mentions his Electoral College strategy seven times, in each case using it to underscore his political savvy and to suggest that he could easily have won the popular vote if he had tried.

I am not a medical professional, and I will not pretend to know what is truly happening here. It’s become a common conversation topic in Washington to muse on whether the president is suffering from some form of cognitive decline or psychological malady. I don’t think those hypotheses are necessary or meaningful. Whatever the cause, it is plainly obvious from Trump’s words that this is not a man fit to be president, that he is not well or capable in some fundamental way. That is an uncomfortable thing to say, and so many prefer not to say it, but Trump does not occupy a job where such deficiencies can be safely ignored.

I agree with every word of this.

Simply put so long as Trump remains in the White House he puts this entire nation at risk, and that cannot be considered mere hyperbole.

Sometimes people respond to suggestions that Trump be impeached with "But would Mike Pence really be any better?"

And the simple answer to that is "Yes, of course he would, because at least he is sane."

I am glad Ezra Klein is brave enough to write this piece.

Why do they say he is suffering from some decline, look at him on the campaign trail,he was the same. This didn't just start since taking office,he was like this before, however many people remember him only from the SCRIPTED tv show, heck even Eruc looked smart.

Saw a clip of him "golfing" with the coast guard personnel, more like they were held hostage by trump in order to tell him hiw great his golf game is,well he spent one third of the year practicing, he should be a pro by now.

Reagan was insane with dementia for years yet the truth was kept from us and the country was run by those behind the scenes, hell, even when a POTUS is in final mental health there are still a cadre of players behind the scenes that advise his every move.

I'm certain that this group of individuals is having to work overtime keeping things in order but at this point I'm also certain that Trump is little more than a figurehead with no real power, and the football? I'm also certain he doesn't have access to the real one or the actual codes.

The big difference is that Reagan had competent people behind the scenes who had experience in government and could effectively run things in his place.

Trump, on the other hand, has surrounded himself with the most unqualified, incompetent ass-kissers he could find.

When is someone who will be paid attention to going to say that the entire Republican Congress is complicit in whatever comes of having this mentally disturbed man in this office? When is someone going to say that they are complicit because they let him continue rather than doing what is their responsibility and that is to get him out of office using the tools they have --- like the 25th amendment?

I would like to see the entire lot of them in jail for what is going because they do nothing to stop it.

"It should go without saying that no Democrats have said there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians. Some have said that we don’t yet have definitive proof that there was a conspiracy at work, but none have proclaimed Trump exonerated in the way he’s claiming. And Trump’s claim that Democrats were the ones colluding with Russia is simply nonsensical, likely plucked from an attempt Republicans and the conservative media made a couple of months ago to execute an “I know you are but what am I” strategy"

  16. It's not that he missed what Feinstein said or that he doesn't understand what she said. He heard it. But HE CAN'T PROCESS IT. On some level he may have heard and understood what she said. But on another level he cannot accept what she said. It goes against the reality that he has built for 70 YEARS. So in order to stay functional, he has to reject it or change it in such a way that he can still function. So he twist and corrupts it until it does. It becomes, there is no collusion she exonerated him.

He does this over and over.

Sometimes he slips and admits something, but later he denies he said it and changes the narrative to fit his current "reality."

If that isn't the definition of "insane" I don't know what is.

As horribly awful as Pence is, I have said all along he would bet better because he is SANE. He is an ADULT. He is also a politician and he knows how things work. He knows you can't go pissing off the leader of North Korea or being petty and vindictive when the world is watching. Pence is well aware of what is expected of the person holding the office of President of the United States.

Pence WON'T DROP THE BOMB out of spite, because of some petulant need for retaliation or just because he can to prove he is "the most powerful man in the world."

As bad as Pence would be as president, he won't start a nuclear war because "we've got nukes, why don't we use them?"

    Pence can be reasoned with.

    Trump has no reason.

I agree with your explanation of how Trump needs to twist what is said to fit with his false construct of reality. My ex husband had the same pattern of behavior even with something written. A third party could say that is not what this says. He would erupt in a rage then tell people everyone agreed with him. Overall he would flip things to the opposite to be what he thought or had sincere delusional beliefs about. Alas the insanity is not seen or detected by people unless they are around the person much.

"In the case of President Donald Trump’s slurred speech during a recent public address, Apatow told HuffPost, “I mean, I work with people and watch them speak all day long, people of every age. I’ve seen people with all sorts of levels of dampness and dryness.”

“That’s not dry mouth. I can’t tell you what that was,” he added."

"“It wasn’t stumbling over one word. It was a solid minute of some sort of occurrence that could be almost anything, certainly not dry mouth. I had Norman Lloyd in my movie. He was 99 years old when we shot. He’s 103 now. I’ve never heard him speak like that,” he said. “My grandmother, who’s 94 and in assisted living, talks like that, and I certainly love her but would also not want her to be the president.”"

"“I think we’re all concerned that there’s not a lot of rational thought happening and we wish we could get accurate medical information. We all remember that man who presented himself as Trump’s doctor and said that Trump was the healthiest guy he’s ever seen. I don’t think you become the healthiest man in the world by eating Kentucky Fried Chicken for a majority of your meals,” said Apatow.

“Like his taxes, we’ll probably never know until too late what his actual health is,” he said."

Cue gif of Twitler using two tiny hands to hold he wawa glass up to take a sippy.

The media spent all their time raising Donald up to be a viable candidate and to make it closer they had to knock her down so it wouldn’t be so obvious how unmatched they were.

They did their jobs too well. Some even admitted it AFTER the race.

Anyone that thinks the media doesn’t influence elections only has to look at 2016. They are WORSE than the Russians. Some of them were even unwitting pawns of the Russians but if it weren’t for their historical influence, if they had done their jobs properly and impartially like they are supposed to do, the Russians wouldn’t have been able to use them and wouldn’t have had the influence they did.

I think it was good old Saint Ronnie Reagan and his merry band of Fascist Republicans that got rid of the safeguards on that. Ever since him our journalists have. Gone for impartial and trustworthy to a bunch of partisan scum.
