Former doctor who sexually abused well over a hundred young female gymnasts sentenced to 40 to 175 years.

Courtesy of the New York Times:

After an extraordinary seven-day hearing that drew more than 150 young women to speak out publicly about sexual abuse they said was committed by Dr. Lawrence G. Nassar, the former team doctor for the American gymnastics team, a judge sentenced him on Wednesday to 40 to 175 years in prison.

He had faced a minimum term of 25 to 40 years.

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, who had opened her courtroom to all the young women who wanted to address Dr. Nassar directly, and forced him to listen when he pleaded to make it stop, handed down the sentence, saying to him, “You’ve done nothing to deserve to walk outside a prison again.”

“It is my honor and privilege to sentence you,” she said, and noting the length of the sentence, added, “I just signed your death warrant.”

Given an opportunity to address the court before sentencing, Dr. Nassar apologized and, occasionally turning to the young women in the courtroom, said: “Your words these past several days have had a significant effect on myself and have shaken me to my core. I will carry your words with me for the rest of my days.” Several women sobbed in the gallery as he spoke.

Just before sentencing Dr. Nassar, the judge read parts of a letter he submitted to the court last week. In the letter, he complained about his treatment in a separate federal child pornography case and wrote that his accusers in this case were seeking news media attention and money. “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” he wrote in the letter. There were audible gasps from the gallery when the judge read the line.

I'm guessing that did not help him with his sentencing.

Obviously this guy is a pig.

The impact of this case has also rippled through the world of USA Gymnastics, which just saw an Olympic coach suspended and three members of their board resign under pressure.

As you know I was at one time a gymnastics coach, but certainly not at this level.

My concern during my years coaching was not sexual abuse, which I never saw, but the ever present danger of eating disorders which were quite prevalent with female gymnasts in their teens and early twenties.

I think pound for pound gymnasts are the strongest, most coordinated athletes in the world.

But they are often pressured to slim down, or bulk up depending on their body type, and the risk of developing a poor body image is a constant danger that can have lifelong repercussions.

That same insecurity also makes them vulnerable to predators like Dr. Nassar.

For decades these young women suffered in silence, feeling that they had no voice, that nobody wanted to listen.

But for these last seven days they certainly found that voice and have been speaking out loud and clear, and I have no doubt that they have inspired hundreds, if not thousands, of others to do the same.

In my opinion what happened today is right up there with the Women's March, the #MeToo movement, and the outing of powerful predators like Harvey Weinstein, Roger Ailes, and Bill O'Reilly.

This is another example of women standing up for themselves, saying that they are tired of the status quo, and declaring that they are taking charge of their lives and putting those who would minimize, victimize, of disenfranchise them on notice.

I for one think it is about time.

Cudos to this judge, and cudos to the young women who finally found their voices!

Now... WHEN will the Orange Abomination get his just comeuppance? When will a judge be man/woman enough to hear all 25+ women who have been molested by him?

“Dr. Nassar was not a doctor,” she said. “He in fact is, was, and forever shall be a child molester, and a monster of a human being.”

In the end, though, Judge Aquilina had the final words.

“Your decision to assault was precise, calculated, manipulative, devious, despicable,” she told Dr. Nassar in part. “I don’t have to add words because your survivors have said all of that and I don’t want to repeat it. You can’t give them back their innocence, their youth.”

During his sentencing, Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina read the court a letter that Nassar wrote in which he took no responsibility for his actions and instead cast blame on his accusers, whom he said were not grateful for the treatments they received.

“Those patients that are now speaking out are the same ones that praised and came back over and over,” Nassar wrote. “The media convinced them that everything I did was wrong and bad. They feel I broke their trust. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.”

As the judge read the line about “scorned” women, the entire courtroom audibly gasped.

And they weren’t the only ones, as Twitter users reacted furiously at Nassar’s attempt to shift blame to victims. Check out the top reactions below.

She Was The First Woman To Go Public About Nassar. Read Her Statement In Full.

Rachael Denhollander publicly accused Nassar in 2016. In court on Wednesday, she was the last survivor to address him.

“You started the tidal wave. You made all of this happen. You made all of these voices matter. Your sister survivors and I thank you,” Judge Rosemarie Aqualina said in response to Denhollander’s impact statement.

Lou Anna Simon resigned on Wednesday after 13 years as president of Michigan State University in the wake of a massive sexual assault scandal involving the disgraced sports team doctor Larry Nassar.

Calls for Simon to step down began with reports that MSU administration officials and law enforcement knew about Nassar’s behavior and failed to stop him. Following Nassar’s sentencing for sex crimes on Wednesday, a source told the MSU student newspaper, The State News, that Simon would step down from her position by Friday.

Simon posted her resignation on the school’s website, addressing the statements of Nassar’s victims and citing that “blame is inevitable.”

“I urge those who have supported my work to understand that I cannot make it about me now,” Simon wrote. “Therefore, I am tendering my resignation as president according to the terms of my employment agreement.”

  7. The predators should be very afraid.

The supervisors of the night custodial crew.

The night managers at stores and fast food places.

The white collar bosses that think they own all of their women subordinates.

    On and on and on.

#metoo isn’t going to stop. Women aren’t going to put up with this shit any more. They’re going to speak out.

The message is all of this shithole perverts better do a 180 and clean up their acts damned fast or they’ll be next.

This isn’t just Hollywood or D.C. politics any more. This is a wake up call to everything good ol’ boy pervert that thinks he can get away with anything just because it’s his word against the little woman.

    Not any more.

As to the Republican Party, they better be careful exactly how much they try to control and stifle women because they aren’t going to take this shit any more. They won’t be marching in little pink hats. They’ll be running for and taking over their jobs. They will have their revenge in the voting booth. When women take Congress, we’ll see how far this control shit goes. Equal pay, birth control, abortion, it will all be on the table and then voted into law. Women won’t be second class citizens or property any more.

Yeah, those men who don’t respect women should be afraid, very afraid.

It would be righteous for Tammy Duckworth to replace Donald Trump. Have two female Democrats as Speaker of the House and Senate Majority Leader and there will be no stopping us.

Let the Matriarchy take over for a few centuries and right this listing ship.

That nervous titter you hear? It’s the tickle of men’s testicles ascending into their safe place.

I agree, but as a woman let me speak out. As a woman don't show your boobs and than complain about being looked at.

Sorry but if men ran around in speedos on the beach what woman would not look? Too many women are being bombarded every day by botox and breast implants and than say "Stop looking at me" .We as women have always known looks matter, no it's not fair, it never was.

But now we have a so called "First Lady" who posed nude, who's plastic boobs, nose job and looks are deamed
all that a First Lady needs to be.

We as women are going backwards. Teach your daughters well and we are so bombarded now more than we have ever been.. just look at prom dresses, time spent on pedicures and manicures and all the time spent on being made "pretty" .

Who do they do it for? Men. Let's be honest here and until we learn to do it for ourselves in this society it will never change.

I was at a Black Bear Restaurant a couple of days ago. I walk up to cashier counter to pay my check. The guy in front of me was telling the cashier the me too movement has gone top far. The cashier looked to be about 50+ yrs old. She agreed with him. I was next in line and I said to her, are you making the same amount of money as the men working here? And then said the movement was much more than money, it is about assault, respect, decency. Her comet back, there are no free rides in life, Women should not have kids if they cannot afford them. Right I said back, then I said everyone should pay taxes including the USA President.
She was just repeating what her man told her to think or fox no news. She did not say men should not seek sex if they don't want kids. And if you do get pregnant by that guy will he pay child support, marry, etc.

My sister in laws neice is Makyla Maroney.

Her whole life was devoted to gymnastics.

She trained six days a week, was home schooled and never had a prom or friends outside gymnastics. Her parents had to have a security consultant to wire their home and get rid of bushes after the Olympics.

Her whole life was never normal. She had a rare talent that she loved doing but the sacrifice is now seen.

Her parents moved to be closer to her training center. When she was in the Olympics her parents had no contact because nothing but her coaches were allowed, nothing but total concentration on the goal was permitted.

    And they trusted them.

About the strength thing, you think wrong, Gryphen. It's jockeys, who are often the same size as a gymnast, performing a feat of balancing on a horse'back, and controlling the animal.

Oh it's more than that Grypth. When their kids reached the top level they trusted in the system. Their kids were special and it's all those girls have ever known.Mckayla Maroney started at age three, was singled out as "talent" was told she could go into dance or gymnastics and she loved gymnastics.

But they never had a normal life and now that they cant compete anymore it's a real blow.

I am amazed at the amount of young girls and their parents that were involved in this. How on earth was this kept quiet, continued, accepted for so long? What exactly was this guy hired to do to them? and why did nobody question it? Was it about fame? How did this dr. keep this many girls and parents silent. The guy is a little man that easily could have been bopped. Did these girls know right from wrong? WTF?

I was molested by a pediatrician when I was a teenager. It wasn't at the level of what Nassar did, but when he would put his stethoscope on my chest to hear my heart, he would run his hands all over my breasts and nipples. He would do this with my mother in the room. It felt funny to me, but I didn't speak up because he was my doctor, because I didn't think he would do anything hinky with my mom right there, because I figured she would intervene if his behavior looked off to her. (I've never talked about this with my mom, but she has utmost respect for "authority," so I'm sure that even if it looked off to her, she justified it as the doctor knowing more than she did.)

When this happened, I did not have enough experience of other doctors to know that his behavior wasn't normal even though it felt wrong to me. Kids often are told to speak up if someone touches them in ways they dislike, but that rule gets suspended at the doctor; so much medical touch is uncomfortable, painful, and even invasive (pelvic exams?!) that your comfort isn't the criterion for what's okay in those situations. As a child or teen, how are you supposed to know the difference between touch and behavior that's uncomfortable but medically appropriate and exploitative? Hell, my adult mother -- who wouldn't even let me go to camp because she was so afraid the counselors would molest me -- apparently couldn't make that distinction.
