Good news! Your government is back up and running. Well at least temporarily.

Courtesy of CNBC:

Senators were optimistic they had the votes to end the government shutdown Monday after leaving meetings more confident about a compromise deal to allow Congress to pass a short-term funding bill.

On Monday afternoon, the chamber advanced a stopgap bill to keep the government open through Feb. 8 by a comfortable 81-18 margin. The chamber still needs to approve its final passage.

"We will vote today to reopen the government," said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

Schumer said Democrats have received assurances that the Senate will take on immigration issues, such as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. Earlier Monday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he intends to allow debate on immigration before Feb. 8.

Oh Democrats, Democrats, Democrats, when will you ever learn?

Mitch McConnell is never going to keep that promise, and if he does, he is guaranteed to sabotage the process.

Main point is 8 year of CHIP funding, plus taking away the GOP narrative of illegals Vs. children. We don't have a majority, we do what we can.

Activists did a great job of holding Democrats feet to the fire on DACA. Last week they didn’t have 41 votes to shut down the government for one second. Need to keep it up.
And the last few days really exposed Trump, yet again, as a pathetic loser, watching TV in his bedroom while adults attempted to negotiate.
Keep slugging away folks. Yep, we do what we can.

I'm assuming that McConnell can't wiggle out of this and will have to put it up for a vote or look like a flat-out liar. But what if the looney House Republicans refuse to go along with whatever the Senate passes?

McConnell can wiggle out of ANYTHING. All he has to do is say Humpty Trumpty won't accept it and we're back at square one.

Anf if the House decides not to go along with it, it is even MORE on the shoulders of the repubes.

And if Humpty Trumpty refuses to sign the bill if it gets to him, it will something he CAN'T lie about. Well, he could - and probably will - but even the base voters he has won't able to claim it's someone else's fault.

Democrats end Trump Shutdown, force Republicans to vote on DREAMers

...But on Monday, Schumer struck a deal with Republicans to provide enough votes to reopen the government, in exchange for a promise that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will bring an immigration bill up for a vote.

Democrats also secured six years of funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which Republicans allowed to expire last September, and which they subsequently held hostage in the shutdown negotiations.

The deal — passed by an 81-18 margin — funds the government until Feb. 8, at which point the Democrats, and the Republicans who also initially opposed a deal that didn’t include a fix for DREAMers, will have the opportunity to test McConnell’s promise. McConnell had been unable to get even his own party to agree to last week’s failed bill.

Schumer made the results of that test explicit. “The Republican majority now has 17 days to prevent the DREAMers from being deported,” he said.

If McConnell fails to honor his pledge, Democrats will once again have the opportunity to hold fast for DREAMers, while Republicans will be forced to put their money where their mouth is and provide the fix for DACA they have said they want.

The onus is now on Republicans to keep their commitments, and to keep the government open past that Feb. 8 deadline.

Court smacks down GOP’s scheme to rig elections in Pennsylvania

Court smacks down GOP’s scheme to rig elections in Pennsylvania
    By Matthew Chapman |
    JANUARY 22, 2018
Gerrymandering was just dealt a fatal blow in Pennsylvania — in time for crucial midterm elections.

    (AP Photo/Nick Ut)
Amid wall-to-wall coverage of the shutdown negotiations, one massive Democratic victory has gone largely unnoticed.

On Monday, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania issued a ruling that the Republican-controlled state legislature illegally gerrymandered congressional districts — and furthermore, that the maps must be redrawn in time for the midterm elections.

According to the seven-member court, the GOP’s redistricting plan “plainly and palpably violates the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”

Under the order, the legislature must redraw the map, with the approval of Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf, and submit it to the court by Feb. 15. If they do not redraw the map, or if the governor rejects it, the court will pick from several proposed maps drawn up by “all parties and intervenors” involved in the case.

On September 24, 2013 Cruz gave a 21-hour speech in the Senate to draw attention to his goals."As the shutdown loomed on September 27, The Washington Post reported that several Republican members of Congress made public statements expressing approval of the impending shutdown. Rep. Michele Bachmann said "We're very excited. It's exactly what we wanted, and we got it. People will be very grateful." Rep. John Culberson said "It's wonderful. We're 100 percent united!"" In an interview with Fox news host Sean Hannity, Bachmann said that she believes there has been "strong unity" between conservatives on almost every budget vote. No, the Democrats didn’t cave on the shutdown today. Trump and the Republicans did.

...Polls say that Americans blame Trump and the Republicans for the shutdown by a clear margin. So why didn’t the Democrats simply let the shutdown drag out and make the other side look even worse as it went on? The GOP still had one card up its sleeve: the race card. In its desperation to temporarily get the lights back on today, the GOP gave up that card.

The Republicans have been holding two groups of Americans hostage. The first are undocumented immigrants who have lived their entire lives here and are protected by DACA. The second are children of low-income families who rely on CHIP for health care. The GOP has been trying to frame this as a false choice, arguing that the Democrats are willing to let the (largely white) CHIP recipients suffer while prioritizing (non-white) undocumented immigrants. The GOP was hoping to use this argument in the 2018 congressional elections, in order to pander to racist and xenophobic voters. But now the party just gave that away.

Today’s Senate deal fully funds CHIP. Assuming this legislation makes it through the House and gets signed by Trump, CHIP is now officially off the table. That means the Republican pitch about Democrats choosing “illegal” (non-white) people over “legal” (white) people is out the window. Now the budget impasse is solely about DACA. The Republican majority now has three weeks to get DACA done, or else the government gets shut down again.

This leaves Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump with a no-win situation. They can either pass a clean DACA bill that they don’t like, and hand a major victory to the Democrats in the process, or they can refuse to do DACA and find themselves having to explain to the American people why the government has been shut down twice in three weeks on their watch.

'Looking at the smiles and backslapping among these Democrats, one couldn’t help but wonder: Do they have the faintest idea how pissed off the Democratic base is?'
'“I do not see how a vague promise from the Senate Majority Leader about a vague policy to be voted on in the future helps the Dreamers or maximizes leverage the Democrats and American people have over the Republicans right now,” Illinois Rep. Luis Gutierrez, the most vocal advocate for Dreamers in Congress, said in a statement. “You’ve got to start trusting each other and working together at some point,” Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth said. “I have no trust in the Republican leadership, but I’m going to take a deep breath and show some trust in my moderate Republican colleagues who were willing to step forward on this.”

Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey—who argued that McConnell made not just a promise to Senate Democrats, but “to the country”—said “I don’t know [McConnell] enough to say that I trust him, but I do trust the people who were in [Collins’ office] the last couple of days.”There is no compelling evidence that rejecting McConnell’s offer would have resulted in a better outcome for Democrats. Polling would have drifted further to Republicans’ side, and McConnell would have waited patiently to accept Schumer’s unconditional surrender. It is surprising that McConnell even offered a handshake agreement, and may have only done so to bring Flake and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham back on the team. Democrats chose to save face by accepting a less-than-“ironclad” commitment"
