Louisiana teacher gets handcuffed and manhandled for daring to ask the School Board about pay raises.

Courtesy of The Hill:

A teacher in Louisiana was removed Monday night from a school board meeting after a confrontation regarding teacher's pay.

During the public comments portion of the Vermilion Parish school board meeting, Deyshia Hargrave, an English language arts teacher at Rene Rost Middle School, asked questions to the board regarding teacher's salaries, according to a report from KATC.

She raised questions about the school board considering a $38,000 raise for the superintendent, saying she felt that giving raises to any person of leadership was a "slap in the face" to all the teachers, according to WGNTV.

She was told she was out of order and that the public comments portion of the meeting was not a question-and-answer period.

The teacher was called on a subsequent time and asked the board another question, according to the report.

She was then removed from the meeting by an Abbeville city marshal and handcuffed outside. She could be heard in a video taken of the incident yelling that the officer pushed her to the ground and she was told by the officer to "stop resisting."

That poor woman is clearly not resisting, she is simply trying to stay on her feet.

There is absolutely NO excuse for treating a person like this. Especially one who dedicates their lives to teaching our children.

I was horrified when I watched this video, but I guess you will be happy to know that the school board did not press charges against the woman for exercising her 1st Amendment rights.

So I guess there's that at least.

Every state in this Union that allows the voucher system must face the public. ALL public schools must demand that it end. Public taxpayer monies are not for private schools that brainwash our youth. STAND UP for all public education to be fully funded with USA taxpayer money. Not one cent should go to private schools of any kind. Time to stop the destruction of our public school system, hold your supervisors, board members and governors responsible for damages to our public schools. NO more dumbing down of America. No more vouchers. Hold them accountable.

is not the idea behind private schools is that mommy and daddy pay for them? so their kids can become elite undereducated snobs like... like....like trump's monsterous brats?

I went to a "Christian" school that my parents proudly paid for. I got a lousy education and was bullied and abused. I agree with you that vouchers are a horrible idea.

Even after my experience, my dad is adamantly pro-voucher. (My parents refuse to admit that Christian school was a mistake -- they just think they should have chosen a different Christian school.) He said, "I paid for your education. Why should I pay for other people's kids' education, too?" I said, "By that logic, every parent should have to pay their kids' school fees, and I should never have to pay an education tax since I chose not to have kids." He had no comeback for that.

But people like him are organized though their churches to run for local school boards. We on the liberal side NEED to find community organizations that can reach people as effectively as evangelical churches do.

Many Americans no longer understand that this country grew and succeeded because we all helped each other. This will signal the end of our Great Experiment - and it's brought to us by the GOP, fundamentalist churches, and thoughtless conservative thinking.

After the news of this my former employer was depressed that he didn't think if this when I had the audacity to ask for a salary equal to the men.

I believe hiring and retaining unqualified teachers with below average abilities is a part of the dumbing down plan. That too should be part of the recovery plan.

I'm appalled at what I'm seeing going on throughout our country and the above story/event is one of them!

Trump's influence on 'some' is unbelievable. Impeach him Republicans in Congress.

We need a different flavor leading our country that brings back joy, peace, no more rumors of war and most of all - working together!

No more racism, hate or ineptness coming from Trump and other folks in his Administration!

a 38,000 raise for the superintendent? for what? to sign papers while poorly paid teachers do all the work? our children need good teachers, not the kind who make the kids read a bad textbook and give true or false tests. we fall so far behind the rest of the world with our childrens education. how are we to compete if our kids know nothing? superpower my ass. we are becoming a third world country-and kids in those countries will do anything to learn.

Of the 8.2 million marijuana arrests between 2001 and 2010, 88% were for simply having marijuana. Nationwide, the arrest data revealed one consistent trend: significant racial bias. Despite roughly equal usage rates, Blacks are 3.73 times more likely than whites to be arrested for marijuana."

"In 2001, Issa's district office in San Clemente was targeted in an aborted bombing plot. Jewish Defense League leader Irving Rubin was arrested along with Earl Krugel in connection with the plot, which reportedly had focused on other targets before shifting to Issa's office.[12][72] Issa speculated that the cause of the incident may have been a column written by political commentator Debbie Schlussel in which she charged that Issa sympathized with Hezbollah despite its being listed by the U.S. government as a terrorist organization, charges he denied."
"In September 2011, a liberal advocacy and lobbying group, American Family Voices, filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics against Issa, alleging he had repeatedly used his public office for personal financial gain.[how?] Issa's office rejected the allegations.[75]

The year before that the Project on Government Oversight, a government watchdog group, awarded Issa with its Good Government Award for his contributions to government oversight and transparency. These included publicizing documents produced by the New York Federal Reserve Bank in response to a congressional subpoena, publicly exposing the NYFR's secret "back-door bailout" of AIG's counterparties, and cofounding a Transparency Caucus dedicated to "promoting a more open and accountable government through education, legislation, and oversight."

I saw this on CBS this morning, the superintendent makes $110k/ year, the average teacher salary is $49k/year( which seems high) and they have not had a raise in 10 years! So his raise us almost equivalent to a year salary for a teacher.
My mother spent 35 years in education and had nothing good to say about superintendents, they were basically there to break the union.
There was no need to drag the teacher off,who by the way has been voted teacher of the year,it just demonstrates that teachers are still not considered professionals in this country.
Instead if bowing down and idolizing military,we should be thanking teachers for their service!

I feel so sorry for America's public school teachers today. When I was growing up, teachers were held in high regard, albeit not paid adequately.

Today they are asked to be on call twenty-four hours a day by responding to students' and parents' tweets and emails immediately even on weekends or during vacation times; they are expected to resolve serious classroom behavior issues that some students have; they are expected to teach to mandated norms (and tests) even when their school districts will not even provide textbooks for each student; they are expected to spend their own money (with not even a tax deduction available anymore) for classroom supplies and frequently for supplies that students' parents should be providing. And we all know of teachers who, out of their own pockets, make sure their students have had some kind of food to eat in the morning or warm enough clothing to wear going home. Many parents have completely abdicated their parental duties, assuming that teachers will pick of the slack. And still no one wants to pay any tax dollars that might go to the schools, in large part because they don't want teachers to have pay raises.

That reminds me,when my mother was student teaching in Highland Pk, MI during the late 60s, she use to take a few of my used clothes to school to give to some of the girls because they had only one outfit to wear all week or no coats or decent shoes.

Simply being an educator in Louisiana must be a challenge considering the "raw materials" one has to work with.

  14. They’ll see to it her principal puts the heat on her and basically makes her life a living hell so she will simply transfer to another district or quit teaching.
