Now that was a powerful speech!
If you are someplace where you cannot watch the video, USA Today has the full transcript here. (However it should be noted that Oprah's delivery is half the magic.)
There is now talk about an Oprah Winfrey presidential run in 2020.
I am certainly not ready to jump on that bandwagon, but I have to say that if my two choices were Tangerine Hitler, and one of the most beloved figures in America, that would not be a hard choice to make at all.
Oprah Winfrey is more compassionate, more intelligent, and simply more competent than Donald Trump has ever been in his entire life.
Oprah is not going to run for president.
ReplyDeleteDonnie jr spent his morning slamming Meryl Streep for her past comments on Weinstein and Polanski,i couldn't figure out why, then I remembered Meryl made some comment about dummy donnie, junior must have been waiting for this opportunity for a year.

ReplyDelete"“We spoke to three sources familiar with the matter who say the talks are preliminary and they are ongoing. With the president’s legal team considering a range of options which include how the president would be interviewed directly by special counsel Mueller or potentially his investigators, the legal standard for when a president could be interviewed, things like the location, the duration, potential topics and then this really caught our attention, potential compromises including written responses instead of a formal sitdown with one source even saying there are talks of submitting an affidavit.”
Delete"Trump’s lawyers know that the fastest way for their client to end up in jail or impeached would be to sit him down to answer questions from Robert Mueller. The Special Counsel doesn’t have to agree to any of Trump’s conditions, and Trump doesn’t have to agree to an interview. The danger for the White House is that if Trump doesn’t submit to questions, Mueller could subpoena him to appear in front of the grand jury, and the last thing that the Republican Party wants to see is their pathologically lying president placed under oath." OR THIS?
NO MORE TV or reality or whatever stars!!!! I have had enough with Reagan and the Orange Abomination.

"Winfrey has stated she was molested by her cousin, uncle, and a family friend, starting when she was nine years old, something she first announced to her viewers on a 1986 episode of her TV show regarding sexual abuse.[39][40] When Winfrey discussed the alleged abuse with family members at age 24, they refused to accept what she said.[41] Winfrey once commented that she had chosen not to be a mother because she had not been mothered well."
" Winfrey became an honors student, was voted Most Popular Girl, and joined her high school speech team at East Nashville High School, placing second in the nation in dramatic interpretation.[46] She won an oratory contest, which secured her a full scholarship to Tennessee State University, a historically black institution, where she studied communication. Her first job as a teenager was working at a local grocery store.[47] At the age of 17, Winfrey won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant.[48] She also attracted the attention of the local black radio station, WVOL, which hired her to do the news part-time.[39] She worked there during her senior year of high school, and again while in her first two years of college."
"Born in rural poverty, and raised by a mother dependent on government welfare payments in a poor urban neighborhood, Winfrey became a millionaire at the age of 32 when her talk show received national syndication. Winfrey negotiated ownership rights to the television program and started her own production company. At the age of 41, Winfrey had a net worth of $340 million and replaced Bill Cosby as the only African American on the Forbes 400.[98] With a 2000 net worth of $800 million, Winfrey is believed to be the richest African American of the 20th century. There has been a course taught at the University of Illinois focusing on Winfrey's business acumen, namely: "History 298: Oprah Winfrey, the Tycoon".[99] Winfrey was the highest paid television entertainer in the United States in 2006, earning an estimated $260 million during the year, five times the sum earned by second-place music executive Simon Cowell.[100] By 2008, her yearly income had increased to $275 million.[101]
Forbes' international rich list has listed Winfrey as the world's only black billionaire from 2004 to 2006 and as the first black woman billionaire in world history.[98] As of 2014, Winfrey has a net worth in excess of 2.9 billion dollars[102] and has overtaken former eBay CEO Meg Whitman as the richest self-made woman in America"

DeleteYeah, she's awesome, but there are any number of men in this nation who will NEVER vote for a female, and you saw what the GOP did to the most qualified candidate ever to run...they will tear Oprah apart. DeleteWho started this rumor about Oprah & the presidency? It is a terrible idea!! What we do not need is another Actor/Actress from Hollywood running our government. I want some one who actually has worked in government and is familiar with the way things work to run our country not someone people really like because they have seen them on TV or in movies. There was a time when most people did not think very highly of people in the acting/theatrical business. ReplyDeleteI'm sick to death of these famous movie and tv idiots who have begun to believe their own hype. I want my president to be infinitely smarter than me. Must be thoroughly familar with every department in the federal government. A good working geographical knowledge of the world; historical, as well. Democrats’ best hope for 2020: Oprah
By John Podhoretz September 27, 2017
...If you need to set a thief to catch a thief, you need a star — a grand, outsized, fearless star whom Trump can neither intimidate nor outshine — to catch a star. We’re through the looking glass here. America is discarding old approaches in politics. Democrats will have to do the same to match the mood to the moment.
And that’s where Oprah Winfrey comes in. She is the mirror image of Trump, but more so. Of course, she’s female and he’s male; she’s America’s generous aunt and he’s America’s crazy uncle. And yes, she’s black and he’s white, she’s liberal and he’s whatever he is.
It goes beyond that. He’s rich and she’s rich, but she made her $3 billion herself and with no controversy. She is, in herself, the embodiment of the American Dream. He got famous from TV, and so did she, but she became vastly more famous and vastly more successful at it.

Future President or Not, Oprah Winfrey Gave a Textbook Great Speech for the Ages
ReplyDeleteThe cadence. The inflection. The combination of the personal and the political. Oprah Winfrey gave a master class in writing a powerful, thoughtful speech.
...As a former speechwriter for President Obama, I was struck by how textbook—in the best possible way—Oprah’s remarks were. Behind her extraordinary delivery was a master class in writing a powerful, thoughtful speech.
Let’s start with a section about two-thirds of the way down. (That’s only five paragraphs—a reminder to all of us that if Oprah can keep it short, so can we.) With clarity and concision to stir the heart of even the grumpiest high school English teacher, she states her thesis: “We all have lived too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up.”
Even for Oprah, this is a bold statement. And that brings us back to the beginning. Because everything she says in the run-up to her Main Idea is about building the authority to say it.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/future-president-or-not-oprah-winfrey-gave-a-textbook-great-speech-for-the-ages
So, that's it? We "little" people don't have the authority to speak. Alrighty then. Thank you for this blog, Gryph.
DeleteOprah for President? Why Oprah Winfrey’s Golden Globes Stump Speech Just Changed Everything
ReplyDeleteMore than an acceptance speech, Winfrey’s rousing Golden Globes speech played like a sermon or, optimistically, a presidential campaign speech. One fan on why it was so powerful.
Oprah Winfrey, as she is wont to do, just gave the most galvanizing, inspiring, and possibly life-saving speech in awards show history. (And, as she has been wont to do lately, just set off a powder keg of speculation about a potential presidential run.)
We had joked on Twitter that the speech was so emotional, a gale force of truth-to-power, that we’d need a week to recover from it. But the truth is that it was packed with such rousing, fist-raising immediacy that the only possible recourse is to take her words as marching orders and leap into action now.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/oprah-for-president-why-oprah-winfreys-golden-globes-stump-speech-just-changed-everything
A speech like this doesn’t happen by accident:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.politicususa.com/2018/01/08/oprah-2020-real-winfrey-running-president-2020.html
PLEASE. You may all come back and tell me when I’m wrong. It will NEVER happen.
DeleteI would like an intelligent, qualified person to run in 2020, that means someone with a background in politics or at minimum an educational history that focused on US History, the Constitution and Geopolitics.
ReplyDeleteThat eliminates Oprah, but I seem to be a minority in my thinking in this brave new world whereby our leaders are emplaced by a cult of personality.
In my 60+ years on the planet, father serving WWI and Korea, living through Vietnam, the Cold War, Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan, nothing ever has been solved by sitting in a circle holding hands and singing "Kum Ba Yah." I HATE the lives it has taken, and for what??
DeleteI am in your minority. Oprah saves the world? Oh come ON.
Oprah 2020 Could Be Real As Winfrey Is Seriously Considering Running For President
ReplyDelete...Oprah gave the sort of soaring speech full of history, hope, and vision that the country hasn’t seen since Obama left office. Oprah Winfrey has the potential to electrify the country if she runs. If Democrats are looking for a candidate who can blow Trump meager celebrity out of the water, and restore hope to America, it wouldn’t be surprising if the movement to draft Oprah swept the nation like wildfire.

LAWD ABOVE my head hurts.
DeleteI don't give a flying about Trump's little stunt. Is it an attempt to restore advertisers to failing Hannity?
ReplyDeleteAnd Oprah Winfrey is no more qualified than Donald Trump. A TV billionaire that people believe is something more but is just another rich person. Oprah built a school for girls in South Africa but she never used her high profile to be a global ambassador for the education of girls. Even with all the duties of FLOTUS and motherhood, Michelle Obama has worked harder for girls' education than Oprah Winfrey- who could have chosen from her personal experience to tackle sexual assault, pedophilia, domestic violence, you name it- but chose just to be a celebrity billionaire.
I vote for President Michelle Obama.

ReplyDeleteJust so we’re clear: the latest political idea is to trade one billionaire TV personality with zero policy experience in White House for another billionaire TV personality with zero policy experience... and put them in the White House? My brain hurts.
I can feel the Palin putrification all over many of these comments here today. Like Trump, Palin also feels superior to people because of their skin color and/or economic standing. The stench of white entitlement oozes from these monstrous sociopaths and permeates all they touch.
ReplyDeleteI would not be surprised one bit if it was Sarah, herself, who is writing those vile "racist" comments. She's bored, stupid, irrelevant and insanely jealous that a black woman could very well have the position Sarah thought would be handed to her.
It is PAST time to put this kind of dark, diseased servants of the corporate oligarchs who have taken control of this country.
To dismiss Oprah Winfrey as simply a charismatic celebrity is to overlook the kind of qualifications we NEED in the person who is elected president:
honesty, intelligence, the willingness to listen and reason, the ability to lead by inspiration and determination to create consensus
We need someone who can restore TRUST again in our country's political process.
#MATA - Make America TRUST Again
#VOW - Voting Oprah Winfrey
Oh you KNOW it was someone Palin-related. I can pick "emily" out in a heartbeat.
DeleteYou were nowhere near smart enough, $arah, nor magnanimous enough to overcome 2008 no matter what you see in the mirror.
Palin is a liar, thief, murderer, madam.
DeleteAdd drug maker of meth. Crackhead she is!
BAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!
DeleteThe stupid, it hurts!
The same tired arguments.
DeleteLOOK. Oprah’s not running for anything, okay?
And neither will $arah.
I would add someone who would surround their self with people who have an are of expertise and willing to learn.
Delete^ in prostitution. money laundering. forgey. You betcha!
DeleteMaybe Palin can put on her "Oprah curls" again and be her running mate ;-)
Delete1:42 missed opportunity Sarah
DeleteSabatose is more your forte.
Oprah? NO. Remember who brought us Dr Phil and Dr Oz. Need I say more?
ReplyDeleteRAinNC
Thank you!
DeleteAlso too remember when Oprah was going to save Lindsay "crack whore" Lohan!
DeleteIt shouldn’t have worked. Award shows are stage-managed, prettified, self-justifying, emotionally incoherent affairs at which, occasionally, something meaningful or surprising happens. The Golden Globes are the wackiest of the bunch, mostly because everyone gets to drink. And the red carpet is where the pageantry is at its most superficial. Yet last night it was the launch pad for a decisive feminist takeover that lasted until the final envelope was opened. Women, collectively and defiantly, ruled.
ReplyDelete...And then came Oprah. No one on earth is better equipped to modulate tone in a tricky television situation than Winfrey, who was there to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. The DeMille speech is fast becoming a kind of alternative State of the Union address. Last year, Meryl Streep gave a full-throated (despite her laryngitis) rebuke to the newly elected President. This year, Winfrey seemed to grab hold of every live wire of rage, sadness, hope, and uncertainty dangling around the room and channel them into a truly breathtaking oration. As the first black woman to receive the honor, she spoke of watching Sidney Poitier claim his historic 1964 Oscar for Best Actor; of the power of the press “to navigate these complicated times”; of Recy Taylor, a black woman raped by six white men in Jim Crow Alabama, who died just over a week ago. “She lived as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men,” Winfrey said. “For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men. But their time is up.” Then she repeated, in that ringing inflection that makes you feel like you might get a new car, “Their time is up!”
It was a galvanizing and important speech, forward-looking and inclusive: the kind we used to hear from the person running the country. No wonder everyone on Twitter immediately posted “OPRAH 2020.”

PLEASE make it stop.

DeleteThis is just a flash in the pan because face it, some people are grasping for anything at this point because they are fearful of the next 3 years of Trump.
Sane people realize that he won't be elected for another term, yet sane people also realize that Oprah isn't the answer.
LOL, they're shaking in their boots!

Why Oprah in 2020 Is Both Blessing and Curse for Trump and the GOP
ReplyDelete...Trump should be thanking Oprah Winfrey. Her speech, despite the praise for the free press the president loathes and her battle cry that “time’s up” for those accused of sexual assault — a charge that cuts mighty close to the White House — was so powerful it might be the only thing to take attention away from the charges so unflatteringly laid out in “Fire and Fury.”
The downside for Trump? Now he’ll be asked about his thoughts on his fantasy running mate as a 2020 opponent, or if his presidency so far is an argument against the idea of a celebrity leading the free world.

Haha, here's @DonaldJTrumpJr telling #OprahWinfrey that there's a "stigmata" attached to the Trump name

“Oprah would always be my first choice.” Trump has fantasized about Oprah as his VP for 16 years

We all know that Barron seems "special" and I dare say the rest of the Trump spawn are more than a bit "special" too.
DeleteAmazing what money can cover up.
If Trig would have been born into the Trump family he'd own his own company by now ;-)
Wanna bet trump will say he has never met Oprah.
