Jeff Sessions talks about the "Anglo American heritage of law enforcement." Wait, what?

Courtesy of The Hill:

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday talked about the "Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement" when speaking to law enforcement officials.

Speaking to the National Sheriffs' Association, Sessions said he wanted to "thank every sheriff in America."

"Since our founding, the independently elected sheriff has been the people's protector, who keeps law enforcement close to and accountable to people through the elected process," he said, according to CNN.

"The office of sheriff is a critical part of the Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement," he said.

Sessions added that "we must never erode this historic office."

According to CNN that Anglo American part was not included in the written version of the speech.

That was just Jeffrey Beauregard Sessions letting his racist flag fly.

No wonder Sessions is so adamantly against legalizing marijuana. After all how can he lock up all of the "darkies" if he can't simply bust them for carrying around a blunt or two?

Perhaps somebody should clue Beauregard in to the honorable tradition of African American law enforcement in this country.

Or are those facts his tiny racist mind simply cannot absorb?

There is an interesting video on Mother Jones that talks about Paul Manafort's ties to the Kremlin. It's so explosive because the video attempts to out its' crooks in Russia. I noticed that they gave Putin the benefit of the doubt tho. They don't want to touch that but I will go as far as to say that Putin is the puzzle to all of this right down to the last escort. That is why he is gleefully having a private one on one with Trump when he pleases. Will anyone put a stop to this? The Republicans are participating in the treason for their constituents. Everyone wants to be a rich Russian these days.
I say Putin is the Tony Montana of our our times. And we all know what happened to Tony aye?

Europe isn't as puritanical as the U.S. so they're going to be more blatant in their political satire.

These racist pigs in our government make me sick to my stomach. I have a black friend who is a cop and he is as nice as can be and does one hell of a job. Plus, he's been employed as a cop for fifteen years.

I think sessions is referring to how the American system of justice inherits from the English system of justice. Sheriff is an position that originated in England and is now found in countries that once were tied to England.

Not the best way to phrase it but I don't think it is racist.

It could be construed both ways and he said it intentionally that way - is my take. I have followed him for a long time and he truly is a racist!

    2. You could also make the argument that our police force is from the English Bobby which became the American Copper and a result of a heavy influx of Irish immigrants.

Policing didn't start with Peel in 1829. Nor with Fouché.

Egyptian Medjay. Roman Vigiles. Ancient China has system of prefects that kept order and some of them were women.

Paris had the first uniformed police force.

Many cultures have some sort of security or police force for defense and for keeping the public safe. Usually the locals policed themselves. Or it was some sort of local militia. It is not strictly an Anglo-American construct.

No one is surprised by Sessions' Anglo-centric view. Most racists use white tunnel vision to view the world.

It reminds me of the Dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding who had a way of explaining how all words come from Greek words. Kimono was my favorite.

"Anglo" in this context means England. It would refer to any institution that came from England, Scotland and was found in the Americas (for practical purposes the US and Canada). Counties and Shires (and Sheriff's = Shire Reeve = King's representative in the Shire) are political subdivisions and offices from England (and Middle Earth). It's tone deaf as F but not racist as he's using it.

Agreed. People forget that our legal system has very English roots.

The office of "coroner" is another one that came from England. "King's Crowner"

    4. The idea that trolls are trying to convince folks here that Jeffrey Beauregard Sessions is some history buff attempting to educate the people as to the origins of law enforcement in America is laughable on its face.

Sessions is a well known racist, so much so that Martin Luther King Jr's widow blocked him from receiving a federal judgeship.

His Anglo American remark was obviously a message to his white supremacist base.

And the trolls can spin until their little heads pop off, but it will not change that fact.

Gryph, this is one instance where you will need to acquiesce to people who understand the context. Jeff Sessions may be a racist, but in this instance, he's referring to where we got our legal foundations from.

People who don't care about history or law will obviously hear it as racist. Those who deal with the term in other contexts understand it refers to England. If you don't believe me, take it from the New Republic. https://newrepublic.com/minutes/147049/jeff-sessionss-anglo-american-remark-wasnt-inherently-racist

    7. Sessions wasn't talking about our legal foundations, the Constitution, the Magna Carta or Greek democracy.

He was talking about law enforcement. The police force.

And he was talking out his ass. It was an Anglo-centric remark based on an Anglo-centric mindview of an Anglo-centric history.

The English didn't invent the police nor did they have the first police force. They weren't even the first UNIFORMED police force. The French were.

"Detroit is once again the most violent city in America, FBI says. Chief Craig disagrees" " Detroit Police Chief James Craig is disputing the FBI's numbers, stating: "Just because it's coming out of the FBI" doesn't mean its accurate.

"I reject it," Craig said of the FBI report, saying his own data using a new software system shows violent crime went down 5% in 2016, and, has been trending downward since 2013.

"I am confident the Detroit police crime statistics are very accurate," Craig said at a press conference today.

Mayor Mike Duggan declined comment." 9/25/17

    This is what Sessions said:

"I want to thank every sheriff in America. Since our founding, the independently elected sheriff has been the people’s protector, who keeps law enforcement close to, and accountable to, people through the elected process," said Sessions, adding, "The office of sheriff is a critical part of the Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement.”

"In the prepared remarks distributed by the Department of Justice, the line reads: "The Sheriff is a critical part of our legal heritage.""

    He changed it. Why?

    Speaks to his character.

"In 1986, Sessions' nomination for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama was rejected by the Senate Judiciary Committee after associates testified during his confirmation hearings that the then-U.S. Attorney had made callous comments about the NAACP and Ku Klux Klan."
