In January, for the first time since legal sales began, Alaska's commercial cannabis growers paid more than $1 million in state taxes, according to officials.
Eighty-one marijuana cultivators paid $1,040,512 in taxes during the first month of 2018, said Kelly Mazzei, excise tax supervisor at the Alaska Department of Revenue.
Alaska marijuana growers pay the state tax of $50 per ounce of cannabis bud, and $15 an ounce for other parts of the plant, like the trimmings of leaves and stems.
A total of 1,061 pounds of marijuana, and 797 of trim, were sold wholesale in January.
This may only be of interest to those of us living up here in the Last Frontier, but I have been predicting for awhile that the pot industry would start to be a real source of revenue for the state and I am glad to see that is finally happening.
It of course will never replace the oil tax revenue, but it is at least one tax source that will not be undermined by the switch to renewable resources.
Which by the way could be yet another profitable source of tax revenue if lawmakers would pull their lips of the asses of oil barons long enough to notice.
We are way behind in finding revenue sources outside of the oil industry, and it is going to get ugly up here if we do not become more proactive.
Won't be long till Track P gets arrested for smuggling pot from Arizona to Alaska to cash in.
ReplyDeleteYou mean shitty meth to Russia?
DeleteSarah’s one goal was to make alaska efficient and not need federal funds. Her friends applauded her for this and still do. I’ve spoken with those who miss her in th office who say she’s the only governor who has heart.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of acid are you on and where can I get some. I want to check out of reality just like you 5:36 AM.
DeleteFuck off.
DeleteMay I have some of what YOU'RE smoking, 5:36 AM? You have a serious problem distinguishing between fantasy and fact.
DeleteNo one misses her in office. She's a quitter
Delete'the only governor who has heart'
DeleteYep- You got that RIGHT> a
$WamP Mon$TEr's
$erpent's heart.
I see you've been contributing to that $1 Million by smoking more than your fair share. Way to support Alaskan economy.
DeleteWitch personality are we today Sarah?
DeleteAre there figures for what the costs are to regulate and police the new industry?
ReplyDeleteMike Pence can bitch all he wants to, but marijuana is going mainstream and here to stay. Why? Because once states realized they could tax the hell out of it, legislators turned a blind eye to the "demon weed" fallacy and saw $$. It's ALWAYS about the almighty buck.
ReplyDeleteHere in "Keep Portland Weird," dispensaries are as common and plentiful as Starbucks outlets. My husband has an OMMA card, and has been growing in our basement/garage for years. Pretty darned good at it, too!
A couple Thanksgivings ago, a friend of ours was visiting, had a stroke, and we called 911. In came Portland Police and Fire, EMTs, and they walked right past it without saying a word nor asking to see his card.
666pence =$9.18 US
DeleteLess then a grams worth...
Those numbers don't add up to even being close to $1,000,000.
ReplyDelete1061 X $50 = 53,050 and 797 x $15 = $11,955
Added together that is $65,005.
So either you got the numbers wrong, or someone is pulling your leg.
16 ounces are in a pound. So, by my calculations:
DeleteBUD:
50 x 16 = 800
x 1061 = 848,000
SHAKE:
15 x 16= 240
x 797 = 191,280
848,000 + 191,280 = 1,039,280
@7:43 You are correct>Mine works out the same
Delete~192,000.oo + ~848,000.oo =Well over a Million.
Home skooled?
DeleteToo cold to take your shoes off?
DeleteBut of course. I forgot to change lbs to ounces.
DeleteIn my defense, It was early and I hadn't had any coffee.
The state sure needs something to go in our favor. People are losing jobs right and left in Juneau and, I assume, other cities because of the legislative budget cuts not to mention the disastrous cuts to the university budget. I'm glad to hear of this revenue source.
ReplyDeleteWhere do they intend to spend this revenue? Redecorating legislature's office, increasing salary of legislature or are they going to invest in schools etc?
ReplyDeleteProbably be the welfare Mom that works for cash and spends the extra money on clothes and booze instead of on her kids or reporting it so she could pay part of the amount used by tax payers to support her family.
Delete/\ don't talk about $arah like that. ;)
DeleteAnd the lower 48 is getting tired of the welfare queen called Alaska.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a problem with Alaska. They have oil.
DeleteI have more of a problem with states like Alabama and Mississippi that continue to run in the red and suck on the government teat that MY taxes pay for.
We don’t just have oil, we have copper, gold and other minerals, breathtaking scenery and world class fish and seafood. If the state has utilized more than its share of govt funding. It’s because infrastructure is expensive and every other state had a 30-150 year head start on AK.
DeleteOh gees. I recall telling folks no to worry.
ReplyDeleteAnd here we are. Making money. Imagine that! ;)
