Humans must prioritise the colonisation of Mars so the species can be conserved in the event of a third world war, SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk said on Sunday.
“It’s important to get a self-sustaining base on Mars because it’s far enough away from Earth that [in the event of a war] it’s more likely to survive than a moon base,” Musk said on stage at SXSW – just days after Donald Trump announced plans to meet the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, in an attempt to defuse rising nuclear tension.
“If there’s a third world war we want to make sure there’s enough of a seed of human civilisation somewhere else to bring it back and shorten the length of the dark ages,” Musk said, responding to questions from his friend Jonah Nolan, co-creator of TV show Westworld.
You know just a year or so ago I would have said this is hyperbolic and a severe overreaction.
Now I am simply hoping that Musk has enough time to solidify his plans before it is too late.
This guy is one of the young billionaires who think they can live forever. They donate huge amounts of money to research institutions to find ways to keep them from ever aging or dying. Move to Mars, Elon, and have lots of fun. In the meantime, the money you've been wasting putting yourself and Teslas into space could have better been spent helping to solve some of the many ongoing problems here on Planet Earth: disease, poverty, the effects of an ever warming planet.

Thank you, Beaglemom. Elon Musk is an idiot.
DeleteCorrect.
DeleteWe are all subject to inescapabable conditions.
His pilgrammage is exoteric only, while denying the necessary esoteric, which is still waiting for him no matter how many rockets he builds. Heaven has always been here and now. No virgin nymphs waiting in fluffy clouds.
The journey from Earth to Mars takes about 300 days. Every two years Mars is at its closest point, only 55 million km from Earth, and it's the ideal time to send a spacecraft. Travel time depends on the positions of the planets and how much fuel you're willing to burn.
DeleteHe’s also one of the many millionaires building survivalist compounds in New Zealand knowing that it will be the safest place on the planet when civilization collapses.
DeleteThe Ring of Fire may just bite him in the ass. It's not a good idea to underestimate the forces ofnature
DeleteReally? He's going to get it done in two months? Because that's about all the time we've got left.
ReplyDeleteColonizing Mars or other planets at great expense, public and private, is not about saving "humanity". The extraordinary amount of resources used to create the paradise for the wealthy in the movie "Elysium", or the space exploration in "Interstellar" could have been used to better life on Earth. Elites are willing to dispose of the rest of humanity, and this beautiful Earth, for their private escape plans, be it a renovated missile silo, private island, magnificent elegant, but weaponized, yacht. If humans cannot learn to stop killing each other and making the Earth unlivable in the process we will continue to create our own hell, no matter where we relocate.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's all great, until the oxygen runs out. Oops.
DeleteSo instead of fixing things on earth, let's go ruin another planet.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the Martians don't want us.
Musk is as idiot. He has six fucking kids so he's clearly not interested in saving Earth by breeding responsibly. He can go straight to hell.
ReplyDeleteOT:

ReplyDeleteJokers of Business first. Hey!
What happened to that smile?
Well go to Mars to find it. ;)
That colonization of Mars will not happen in our lifetime. It takes nine months to travel there, and no astronaut worth their weight will volunteer to go there. If anything happens to a person on the trip there, it will be at least two years, before they could get back to earth.
ReplyDeleteColonizing the planet itself would have to start slowly, and it would involve many, many trips there, and take many, many years. We do not have the stamina or means to do that at the moment.
If we fucked up things on this planet then we don't deserve another one.
ReplyDeleteNope.
ReplyDeleteWe've fucked up the Earth badly enough, Mars doesn't need us and the Earth will deal with the human virus in her own way in her own time.
We are not good. We are detrimental to a successful ecosystem. We are a virus that must die and most certainly NOT spread to other planets.
