Thousands of students, emboldened by a growing protest movement over gun violence, stood up in their classrooms on Wednesday and walked out of their schools in a nationwide demonstration, one month after a gunman killed 17 people at a high school in Florida.
The 17-minute protests unfolding at hundreds of schools are intended to pressure Congress to approve gun control legislation after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., and come 10 days before major protests in Washington and elsewhere.
Here’s what to know:
• The first large wave of students began to leave their classrooms at 10 a.m. Eastern time. Across the country, others are walking out at 10 a.m. in their local time zones.
• The demonstrations were not limited to school property. In New York, students marched in the streets, while in Washington, sign-clutching students gathered outside the White House and on Capitol Hill.
• School administrators have been grappling with how to respond. Some districts welcomed or even tacitly encouraged walkouts, while others threatened disciplinary action against students who participated.
Apparently the threats of disciplinary action has done little to dissuade the students who are showing up in huge numbers.
And they are making the most of the media attention.

It's things like this which put my mind at ease about the future of our planet."In an ideal world, the 20 first graders and kindergartners who died at Sandy Hook would be in middle school... the 32 students who died at Virginia Tech would be at work.

What I saw of the student protests was so inspiring. I certainly hope that no school district in the country will punish the students who made their thoughts and words known today. They participated in democracy today - peacefully and meaningfully. I am proud of America's children today.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
these kids are more mature than many adults. which is sad, because they should be having kid lives. i hope they still giggle on the phone. flirt. hang out at the mall. waiting for spring break with fun planned. i am so proud of the youth of our country. i hope some of this gets t trump and the repubs. i have to cry now.
DeleteMy child participated today...the school didn't let them outside, per se, due to the inclement weather (we are in NE Ohio in a cold snap ) and possibly due to security concerns, but they were allowed to walk out of their classrooms for the allotted 17 minutes. I am so proud of how organized and focused these kids are, keeping this issue in the public's consciousness. I plan on marching in solidarity with them on the 17th, proudly wearing my March for Our Lives T-Shirt that I purchased from their website. Thinking of a protest sign as I hit "send"...

Alaska Airlines;

Alaska Airlines is based out of Seattle and has nothing to do with Alaska except for the name. Very unfortunate for this lady, hopefully one day Seattle Airlines will take our name off their planes.
Delete@3:31 From day 1>Alaska Airlines has a $hitload to do with Alaska. Get your facts straight.
Deletehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Airlines
3:31. You are obviously not from Alaska, or you for some reason have some weird fear that an attack by some criminal AK Airlines pilot reflects everything about Alaska. AA started in Alaska and in many towns is the only commercial carrier. It is by far the main airline to and from Alaska for most people. And their logo (on each plane's tail) was specifically chosen to reflect Alaska's arctic region and its people. You need End be so reactive to a simple post, though it was considerably O/T (but that' was their and Gryphen's decision whether to post).
DeleteUnfortunately, anything happening on the west coast wasn't shown because of the time difference. They did show some walkouts happening in Colorado, where there have been school shootings. I loved seeing so many kids and others out on the streets and especially with their backs turned to the White House.
ReplyDeleteOT. Palin will be speaking at a Mar-a-Lago fundraiser Friday. I expect Trump to be there since he's not been able to get much golfing in over the past couple weekends. Palin must be ecstatic about not have been completely forgotten about. And you know Palin will be going on and on about guns during that speech. It will be grotesque.
Well, as a matter of fact, I'm glad to hear that Humpty Trumpty will be there to listen to Palin's nonsensical word salad in that singsong, shrilly, nasal, sickening little voice of hers. To me, it's absolute torture and he deserves to suffer. I also hope she brings her gang of hillbillies with her and they get drunk and start a brawl at tacky Mar-a-Lago just like they do when they crash a party in good old Alaska. He deserves the worst of the worst and Palin and her spawn fit the bill.
Delete12:13, I'm laughing so hard after reading your post that my eyes have teared up. I hope things go just as you describe.
Deletewonder if she will wear her "jingle jacket over her belmonts. Trump will be so turned on even though she is too old for him!
DeleteI can guarantee you, darla, she’ll look like a skank! She always does....and thinks she’s hot.

ReplyDelete" “Because Congress is complicit, and the NRA managed to mobilize single-issue voters to hold Congress in a vice-like grip. What we’re seeing, Katy, that is so powerful is a social movement much like the civil rights movement, the women’s health care movement, marriage equality movement, anti-war movement. In the making we have a potential impact. If the students not only walk out of the class but walk into the polls come election day, and that’s what I sense is happening and that’s why I think we’re closer to victory than ever before.”"

ReplyDeleteThese kids are awesome. I can’t wait to march with them on March 24. Shame on us in the older generations for leaving this up to them, but so great they’re doing it.

The students are inspiring and this is great. I am thinking students across the nation will need to go on strike, no school at all, before Repubs will consider to do something about kids that are killed with guns and assault weapons meant for war killing.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, 1:48, but I don't believe even that would make them care. To the repubes, kids are just non-entities because they can't vote. (That's a good thing to me, because when they DO get old enough vote, we know which direction they will take - for the most part.)
DeleteTo me, the only thing that will make those current NRA- controlled idiots change will be the shooting deaths of all their own children while in school.
But since a large number of their kids are in private school....
