San Francisco will retroactively apply California's new marijuana legalization laws to prior convictions, expunging or reducing misdemeanors and felonies dating to 1975, the district attorney's office announced Wednesday.
Nearly 5,000 felony marijuana convictions will be reviewed, recalled and resentenced, and more than 3,000 misdemeanors that were sentenced prior to Proposition 64's passage will be dismissed and sealed, Dist. Atty. George Gascón said. The move will clear people's records of crimes that can be barriers to employment and housing.
San Francisco's move could be the beginning of a larger movement to address old pot convictions, though it's still far from clear how many other counties will follow the famously liberal city's lead.
Proposition 64 legalizes, among other things, the possession and purchase of up to an ounce of marijuana and allows individuals to grow up to six plants for personal use. The measure also allows people convicted of marijuana possession crimes eliminated by Proposition 64 to petition the courts to have those convictions expunged from their records as long as the person does not pose a risk to public safety.
They also can petition to have some crimes reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor, including possession of more than an ounce of marijuana by a person who is 18 or older.
You know what they say, where California goes the country is sure to follow.
But that certainly will not happen with Jeff Sessions leading the Justice Department.
I believe his response to marijuana use is some version of "shoot on sight."
Morality is not determined by the church you attend nor the faith you embrace. It is determined by the quality of your character and the positive impact you have on those you meet along your journey

American cities suing the Pentagon for failure to share information that would keep military criminals from buying guns.
Courtesy of Yahoo News:
The cities of New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco are suing the U.S. Department of Defense over its legal failure to report service member crimes to the FBI and national gun background check database, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.
For decades, the Pentagon has defied federal laws intended to keep firearms away from criminals like Devin Patrick Kelley, The New York Times notes. The 26-year-old was convicted of domestic assault before he purchased a rifle and killed dozens of people in Texas in November. Felonies and domestic violence convictions legally prohibit gun ownership.
The democrat-led cities’ lawsuit now seeks to prevent more “senseless carnage” by requiring the Defense Department to fix other “deadly gaps” in the background check database and comply with existing reporting laws under federal court supervision, according to Reuters. It was filed Friday in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said his city “relies on this reporting when making the crucial decision whether a license-to-carry applicant should be permitted to carry a firearm.”
“We’re joining in this suit because reporting these records is absolutely critical to those decisions,” he said in a statement. “The background check system only works if it contains the proper records.”
Kind of a shame that you have to sue your own government in order to force them to provide information to keep US citizens safe.
But of course we are talking access to guns here, and the only thing more American than that is mom's homemade apple pie and using the Stars and Stripes as seat covers for your pickup truck.

My favorite gif of the day.
And that is how a hero is born:
This short clip has made Wiener a hero in his city. The response in San Francisco has been “overwhelmingly and enthusiastically positive. People are thrilled. There is such a deep seated frustration with Fox News and the fringe it represents,” Wiener said, saying he’d also received messages of support from around the country.
And do you know what? This country needs many more heroes just like Scott Wiener to call out Fox News for their bullshit every chance they get.

San Francisco supervisors tell Fox News they are not real news. Apparently they didn't know that.
Courtesy of Mediaite:
O’Reilly reiterated tonight that the liberal policies of San Francisco, the sanctuary city policy chief among them, caused Steinle’s death. He said the city supervisors are “unrepentant,” and showed video of three of them being confronted by Fox reporters.
Jane Kim said the big issue that needs to be addressed over Steinle’s death is gun control and keeping guns out of the wrong people’s hands.
But when a Fox reporter confronted Katy Tang she said “Of course Fox News would be this rude” and walked away. When he tried to follow her with more questions, she told him, “You’re interviewing the wrong fucking person.”
Scott Wiener was more to-the-point when he was confronted, saying, “Fox News is not real news, and you’re not a reporter. I talk to real news only.”
Which by the way this piece proves beyond any doubt since the only reason that Fox is chasing this Karte Steinle story is because Donald Trump is using her death to prove that his racist statements are true.
Which by the way is something that has infuriated her brother and almost caused Geraldo Rivera and Eric Bolling to come to blows.
(Man I would totally pay to see that!)
So yes Fox News is not news. Hard to believe that hearing that would be news.
