As you may or may not know Fred Phelp's Westboro Church has made a name for itself by showing up all across the country and staging bizarre protests under notion that whoever they are protesting that day is supporting a "gay agenda".
They have turned up at college campuses, the funerals of dead soldiers, high schools, political events, you name it. And at every one of these venues they hold up these signs with such messages as "God Hates Fags!", or "You're Going to Hell!", or "America is Doomed!" or my personal favorite "9-11 Gift from God!". Oh yeah these assholes are the very definition of the loving Christian.
Anyhow they have proved more resilient then cockroaches. They have resisted being dispersed by threats, by tear gas, by counter demonstrations, and by every means you can imagine.
But that was before they ran into the young men of Alpha Delta Phi.
You see these crazed jerkwads showed up at the University of Chicago, apparently because Barack Obama once taught there , and set up their protest right next to the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity house. Big mistake.
Is that the most beautiful thing you have seen all day or what? God I love the youth of America!

I really feel sorry for the little kids that those groups drag to their hate-filled activities. I used to see them all the time on Saturday mornings protesting Planned Parenthood clinics, carrying heavy signs with pictures of fetal parts. Poor kids.

ReplyDeleteI'm from Lawrence, KS, a progressive island in an otherwise red state, and only 20 minutes from Topeka, home to Fred Phelps et al. (Even Topekans can't stand these people.)
ReplyDeleteFred is, or course, insane. The rest of his family and followers are unwell in some capacity, and have to be in order to carry on with his lunatic agenda.
We've had to deal with these people just by having to see them or actually trying to interact with them for many years, and I used to always become enraged, but ever since I read the following story, I've felt pretty good about it all.
You'll see what I mean if you read the whole thing—the Phelps family is doing way more good than they could possibly imagine.

No one in their right mind would agree with them, and everyone who might be prejudiced and those who want to ignore the whole issue are dragged into the conversation by these morons. People react, they think, most think for themselves and lean toward the humane conclusion rather than being swayed by Phelps's illogical hatred.
Really. The anti-Phelps activities and fund raising are all his good deeds, he just doesn't know it.
ckennedy, substitute the names of any number of the wingnut Repub "talk show hosts" or certain crosseyed shrill-voiced female governors for the name of Fred Phelps, and you're describing THEIR followers, too.

Gosh - why do some of them have mug masks on? Even the children? Are they ashamed to be identified for their views?

Those students absolutely handled that situation in the correct manner - they used humor and intelligence to counteract the jerkwads.
