One of the chief reasons Sarah Palin has given for resigning as Governor of Alaska is that her state’s taxpayers are being forced to spend money defending her government against ethics complaints that would otherwise fund teachers, cops, and road repair. ("Sniff, sniff" is that bullshit I smell?)
But in response to our questions, a spokesperson for the Alaska governor’s office just gave us new information that casts serious doubt on this assertion. The revelation makes the resignation episode even stranger, and raises fresh questions about the real reasons for her abrupt departure. (OH my God, how could it get any STRANGER?)
During her resignation speech last week, Palin presented herself as a heroic defender of the taxpayer. She said that money being spent on government lawyers to defend against these “frivolous ethics violations” could be “going to things that are very important, like troopers and roads and teachers and fish research.” Palin repeated exactly the same point this week.
But David Murrow, a spokesperson for the Governor, said in an interview that much of this money was budgeted to the lawyers in advance and would have gone to them anyway, even if state lawyers hadn’t been defending against these ethics complaints.
In response to our questions, the Governor’s office provided us with a detailed breakdown of the millions Palin has claimed has gone to defending against ethics complaints. (How does $12,747 in Water Quality Intiatives figure into this total? Okay who accused her of unethically screwing up the water quality?) It does list roughly $1.9 million in expenditures.
But Murrow, the spokesperson, acknowledged to our reporter, Amanda Erickson, that this total was arrived at by adding up attorney hours spent on fending off complaints — based on the fixed salaries of lawyers in the governor’s office and the Department of Law. The money would have gone to the lawyers no matter what they were doing. The complaints are “just distracting them from other duties,” Murrow said.
Ruh Roh! It looks like somebody forgot to remind Mr. Murrow that he is SARAH PALIN'S spokesperson which means telling the truth is NEVER the correct response to a reporter's question. It is so hard to find good unethical help these days!
In other words, while these lawyers might have been free to do other legal work for the state, the ethics complaints have apparently not had the real world impact Palin has claimed, and didn’t drain money away from cops, teachers, roads and other things.
So essentially the Palin administration is trying to blame everyday lawyer expenses on these ethics complaints. Next thing you know she will be blaming her recent resignation on bloggers! How silly is th.......oh yeah I forgot.
FINALLY! The MSM is finally beginning to see what we in Alaska have known for quite some time. Sarah Palin is a habitual liar. She lies about EVERYTHING! Pipelines, rural problems, purchased clothing, endorsements, babies, she lies, and lies, and lies. (Do you think that is enough to get me one of those awesome Van Flein letters or should I go on?)
THIS, this is the woman that so many in the GOP are hanging their hopes on. The Republican party is plummeting toward the ground in a veritable freefall, and Sarah Palin is handing out anvils.
It occurs to me that Palin may know about the IRS investigation and has actually done a very good job of squashing the rumors. All talk of a federal investigation went away when the FBI came out and announced that they were not investigating her. Everyone remarked about how strange it was that they did that. Then we learn that Van Flea actually called them up and got the quotes and released them to the press. Now, what does that tell us? That Sarah wants everyone to hear "no FBI investigation" and automatically think, "so those were just nasty rumors." Except, of course, that the rumors were about the IRS.
ReplyDeleteI think that's why so many of us missed your announcement of the Thing That Must Not Be Named. We saw the posting, thought, Oh, the three ethics complaints will be dismissed by her minions and federal investigation has already been debunked.
You gotta admit, she can be very, very clever at manipulating people Hopefully it will all catch up with her.
Midnight
Sad that bloggers have to get the truth to MSM - lazy "reporters" too lazy to investigate are repeating Palin's LIES as fact.
ReplyDeleteOT - Bristol and Willow not at resignation speech, not on fishing boat. I really believe the two teens GOT IT! Stay away from the hoopla and nobody will pick on you. I bet they are furious at Buttercup - both thrown under bus as mommy dearest uses them, makes fools of them, to further her agenda. Good going girls!
Sarah appears to be a classic, "casual liar." She tosses out whatever fits that particular moment's need, and it has worked for her so far.
ReplyDeleteThe Daily Beast is reporting Palin made $4 million on her book deal; someone must have leaked because one of my NY sources got back to me today and said she'd heard $3.5 million.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, maybe Murrow told the truth to get back at Palin for hiring him and turning his life upside down just a month before she quit.
Midnight
They should have put the total salaries of all employees of the state in the summery. Aren't they all there just to do Sarah Palin's bidding? How much has it caused the state to fabricate all the justifications for all of her lies and procrastinating on delivering open and transparent answers to questions?
ReplyDeleteYou know, that comedian, Bill Mayer or something like that, recently said that we need a new political party, one that represents the people, because the Democrats are the new Republicans, and the Republicans have checked into the insane asylum.
ReplyDeleteThe Republican party may indeed not be salvagable.
This is called Alaskan Roulette:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.boingboing.net/2009/07/08/god-bless-america.html
I am guessing that the Water Quality Initiatives are from the time she "took off her governors hat" to say how she would vote. There was a complaint filed about that.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone checked the records request costs against what they charged CD?
Oh, Gryphen, you are too much. How will I be able to sleep after laughing so hard. Great post! Thanks for the levity.
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't the reporter ask for an explanation in the difference between the $296,000 costs released by the Personnel Board and the $500,000 amount on the schedule?
ReplyDeleteThe schedule heading is Department of Law. No doubt, it includes costs for processing ethics complaints; but it looks like it included unrelated costs, as well....enough to total just enough to cover Mrs. Palin's arse.
Where are the investigative journalists?
I used to subscribe to Psychology Today years ago when i could afford 3 or subscriptions at a time. It was always a good read.
ReplyDeleteSeems Deborah King nailed her September 2008 assessment of Palin; if cues and clues were hard to come by for the average person to judge Palin then, well, there's a mine of information now!
"Water Quality Intiatives" is Alaskans for Clean Water - Pebble Mine.
ReplyDeleteI studied journalism and the thing that bothers me is that so many of the journalists today are just people who think it would be a fun or cool job but who seem to know so little - or care so little - about what Freedom of the Press means. Instead of using that privilege to get the news out there and hold officials accountable, they are lazy and like to just regurgitate what information is given to them. Palin is a pathological LIAR and the MSM gives her a pass. Most people trust the media so they take the news at face value. So who is even surprised that Palin gets away with her lies? It is SO FRUSTRATING to me that no one out there cares or even writes a thoughtful or well researched news piece anymore.
ReplyDeleteI've thought about it, and I think that the real reason Palin quit was not because of a controversy that is brewing but just for the simple fact that she is lazy, thin skinned and no longer wanted the job. Her nervousness and ill-timed press conference was not to hide an investigation but to hide the fact that she is really just a pure and simple quitter. Besides, most of her gates involve other people in compromising positions. How can they rat on her without showing their own guilt and compliance? Self-interest from beginning to end.
I really don't think there needs to be an iceberg to bring her down. Just the MSM to get off their ass and report on the simple fact that she is not credible is enough to turn Americans from her. Who votes for someone they cannot trust?
I am not surprised that newspapers are dieing and news programs are so desperate for viewers that they put little resource into news investigation and more into tabloid type news. I mean, what is Palin after all but not tabloid fodder? And to tell you the truth, I think they deserve to die so that some other form of news - real news- can take their place.
Blogs like yours are the only ones that have the guts to get to the truth. But, I feel like to make a difference, we need more people like you to go viral. Ms. Moore was right, Palin is a bully and a coward, and if there is one thing that will stop her and make her step down is someone(s) who are willing to go up to her face with facts she cannot refute. Ms. Moore did this, so did Mr. Schmidt in his e-mail regarding the AIP.
I for one think we should all make more of an effort to send your posts to reporters too lazy to do their job so that they can at least regurgitate real facts.
When she gets close to 1% of what the Clintons spent on defending themselves against the GOP smear campaign, then she can complain.
ReplyDeletehas anyone thought to ask how much the state has taken in for the records requests? CD had to pay over 5,000 and there are others who have had to pay large amounts when she was running for VP and for other complaint.
ReplyDeletethey are talking about how much was spent, now lets hear how much was taken in
Thanks, Gryphen, I was laughing all the way through your post.
ReplyDeleteThe paper I viewed with the costs is a lie to cover Palin's lie. The figure of billable hours on page 2 were also listed at the bottom on page 1 under Dept. of Law Ethics, $41,574.40. Yet, they are also listed under two headings on page 1 as well. Rounded to the nearest number. Double dipping??? Look closely.
The employees of the state are paid to do their job, whatever crosses their desk. How can you include their salary and then also use a formula to include billable hours, too? And I wonder if Palin's salary is included under the Governor's Office. Bet it is.......
Oh, and I would check into the water thing. Looks like McLeod filed a complaint and won. But without further info, I don't know.
Interesting reading...
ReplyDeleteFrom the Runners World interview,
http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-243-410--13221-0,00.html:
"What did your parents teach you about running?
They taught me self-discipline and goal setting. The self-discipline it took for my dad to train for and qualify for Boston, eating healthy and getting up in those Alaskan morning conditions where it would be 20 below. To see that example of what it takes to accomplish a goal, the determination it took, taught me so much. He used to tell us to call on the rock during a race when we were hurting and we were tired and wanted to quit. He always told us to articulate what it is we've trained for, what it is we're prepared for, and hold onto it when it hurts so bad in a race. We all have a different rock, but Dad inspired us with the knowledge that we could reach down deep and get strength from it. And that's not just a lesson when you're out there dying on the 23rd mile of a marathon but one for getting through daily life. Sometimes you've got to call upon your rock to get through the tough times.
And so what's your rock?
First and foremost, like my Mom's inspiration has always been, I have my faith in God. Then I have all the preparation, so I know I can get through it. It's kind of like I've been there before and the best part of the rock I can call upon is the preparation that allows me to know that I can get through it. Looking back, I'm really thankful for all my less-than-pleasant running experiences because I learned through each one, and I can put it all to good use being the CEO of a state full of diverse views and personalities and issues.
Was there ever a period when you didn't run?
Only when I was too pregnant to run. During each of my five pregnancies I worked out until right before the babies were born. A few summers ago I trained hard and ran a sub-4 hour marathon [2005 Humpy's Marathon in Anchorage]. That was a pretty intense summer of running. There have been other periods where I haven't had the time to get out there and run as hard, so it's waned on and off over the years.
What has running taught you about politics?
Same thing it's taught me about life: You have to have determination and set goals, and you don't complain when something's hurting because no one wants to hear it. You get bummed and burned out sometimes in running and in politics, but if you're in for the long haul and you're in it because you know that it is a good thing, then you get out there and you do it anyway.
I have a really bum ankle from a high school basketball injury. It still swells and gives me some grief, and the older I get, the worse it feels. I don't know if I attribute it to age or having five kids. That takes a little bit of a toll on one's body, too.
Have you kept running through your pregnancies?
Um-huh, I do. But like with this last one with Trig, I was pregnant with him in the wintertime, so I didn't run as much. But I still went to the gym and did the elliptical and lifted and did a couple different classes. With each of the kids, I worked out until they were born.
How long after giving birth before you're running again?
It wasn't like the very next week, it would be weeks. With Trig, it was relatively soon because I felt so good throughout the pregnancy and so great recovering, it was just a couple of weeks later and I was running again."
From photographer, Brian Adam's Flickr page,
http://www.flickr.com/photos/brianadams/3674575800/:
"This was my second time having a portrait session with the Governor and both times she was a pleasure to photograph. The first time I photographed her it was in Juneau, AK.
The best part was before the shoot Todd Palin called me asking me how long it would take to photograph her? I said I would be happy with 45 min. They ended up giving me three hours. It was very nice of them considering they were headed off to NY that night."
Anybody have photos from the Juneau shoot?
Is it that Murrow didn't drink enough Kool-Aid or he was so miffed by Palin's quitting that he's decided not to be her spear-catcher? Remember, he put up something about "considering life's ironies" on the day she resigned; that indicated that he wasn't in the loop about her quitting. I don't know what this guy sacrificed or how much trouble he went to in order to take this job in Alaska, but he can't be happy with her.
ReplyDeleteSpinning Palin has got to be an especially tough job right now.
Morgan
The Palinistas are repeating the $2 million rap for one reason: to confuse hardworking American tax payers down south into thinking Palin needs millions to pay her legal fees.
ReplyDeleteAnd if Palin wants to talk about wastes of money:
What about all the money Palin tried to get tax free for living in her own house, driving a state vehicle, and having the state pay for her family to travel when they were not on official busniess? What about all that money?
HuffPo (front page of Politics section) story by Rachel Weiner posted just a few minutes ago (12:13 EST) says ADN confirms that Palin's claim millions spent or cost to state of AK for legal defense of ethics charge is untrue!
ReplyDeleteFront page of HuffPo Politics section: story by Rachel Weiner that ADN confirms that Palin's claim of millions spent/cost to state of AK for legal defense of ethics charges is untrue!!!
ReplyDeleteGosh..are you guys serious. Guess you never worked for a large corp. or business. That is exactly how you do a cost analysis. You calculate the amount of time by various employees spent on doing the "subject matter". That then is the cost of that given program. Otherwise, you would have to go out an hire all new employees for each job, answering phones, filing, attorney fees, etc. to give a cost analysis of a specific program. If the attorney as he claims wasn't working on this he would be there anyway is disingenuous. Is he saying this justified his job? I don't think so. No one that understand business cost analysis is going to buy this argument.
ReplyDeleteJust like when you do budget analysis for any large corp. you include all costs even though the employees have to be paid regardless of whether they are doing that project or a specific assigned job. That is how you know how much you charge a vendor or that will be bid on. Also, that is how you justify hiring additional employees.
Your assumptions will only fool those that are not aware how budgets, cost analysis, etc. are done. Dumb argument. You all just keep making yourself look more stupid. And, others that hate Palin will do the same.
juju, why are you here? You are not winning any of us over to liking your quitter candidate. In fact, your constant childish antagonism makes us disinclined to even read your posts. You are making her look bad. You make her followers look bad. You have hurt her image. Have you seen the latest poll since she quit?
ReplyDelete@juju
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of budgets, cost analysis, etc. does NOT include offseting income, for example, payments made by requestors of public records?
juju, Even though I think you're misguided to support Palin, I appreciate the way you make your point. Ignore the ranting and continue as long as Gryphen allows you to post. I for one enjoy hearing from you and I enjoy the nastiness you elicit in return. I'm also learning a bit from you on what makes you righties tick.
