"My review shows that there is clearly a lack of quantifiable evidence necessitating this ordinance," the mayor said. "My review also shows that the vast majority of those who communicated their position on the ordinance are in opposition."
What Sullivan fails to note is that most of that opposition came from OUTSIDE of Anchorage.
So now we know that Sullivan is clearly Jerry Prevo's butt-monkey. Raise your hand if you are surprised by that. Yeah I did not thiink so.
(I need to give a hat tip to my friend Phil Munger over at Progressive Alaska who first reported that Sullivan was going to veto this ordinance.)
It's all up to Debbie Ossiander.
ReplyDeleteCall her and ask her to support an override.
(Her vote against the measure because it "went too far in some places and not far enough in other places", or something like that, sounded like a Palinism.
Please add my blog Mullin's World to your great blog roll. Keep up the good fight. John Mullin

I am beginning to think there is no hope for this state. How can the mayor not represent the people of Anchorage? Most of the opposition was from outside. I guess he only needs to serve one term then. He goes against the will of the people, he's out.
ReplyDeleteAll you have to do is look at the Mayor's eyes. They are a window to his soul...and you will see why he vetoed.
ReplyDeleteThat is terrible to support discrimination. Just because there are people who oppose it because they want to discriminate doesn't mean it is right. Come on, I just don't understand it.
ReplyDeleteOff topic -- this is an excellent article about the US government psychological study on conservatives. From Gaurdian and also Washington Post, I believe. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/aug/13/usa.redbox

It is so upsetting that Dan Sullivan will veto this. It makes me so mad that they even let all these people who don't even live in Anchorage stand up and spew their ignorance & hatred.
ReplyDeleteI would love for him to live in my shoes. I have a gay son and there isn't a minute that goes by when I don't worry about him. Thankfully he is in academia right now & let's face it he is much more accepted there. Not that he hasn't had his problems. He has had his tires punctured and has so many gay friends whose parents don't talk to them anymore because they chose the gay "lifestyle".
I sincerely hope he is voted out of office next go round.
Gryph,
ReplyDeleteMunger, not Monger. As in 12th generation descendant of Nicholas Munger.
thanks.
Wow Phil I am so sorry!
ReplyDeleteOf course I know how to spell your name, but apparently one of my fingers slipped.
My bad, I owe you a drink now.
Well anyhow I fixed it.
I think it's time to boycott his bar or whatever it is. Surely you can drink better elsewhere.
ReplyDelete10cats.
Anchorage, I'm so sorry to hear that your dipsh!t mayor is more concerned with protecting himself from the rabid christianistas than insuring the majority doesn't roll over the minority.
ReplyDeleteI truly hope Ms. Ossiander does the right thing.
(word verification: boomated, as in BOO, matey, may you get booted)
I find it hard to believe that anyone could be surprised at Sullivan's veto. I could hear it coming even before Ossiander finished her lying/waffling.
ReplyDeleteWhat sort of constitution allows the minority to win? Ha!
Well, the people of Anchorage could put a boycott of his bar together. Lets see how many "redshits" he gets, lol!
ReplyDeleteKill his business. Boycott!
Isn't he the guy who let his waitress drive while drunk? And she got into a accident? And he tried to suppress that info before the election??And he was serving her drinks after hours? How come no one has done anything about that? Call the ABC. Get his liquor license pulled? How come?
Boycott, Boycott, Boycott, boycott!!!
We should borrow a quote by one of the Republican's beloved:
ReplyDelete"Individual rights are not subject to a public vote: a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority."
--Ayn Rand
This is hardly surprising. I am pretty sure that there were plenty of people who knew that this was the way Sullivan would react to this ordinance, and while disgusting on its face that he would choose to give a thumbs up to allowing discrimination, it seems to me that those who voted for him are of the same mindset.
ReplyDeleteThere were plenty of people who fought to keep him from being elected as Mayor and this is one reason why.
It is a shame that this type of reaction and behavior is allowed to continue but as we can clearly see, this is what happens when you allow religious beliefs to have a say in our laws. There is a reason to keep religious ideas and ideals out of our government and governing, and it is a shame that there aren't enough people who understand and work towards that goal.

Ossiander won't do squat. She voted against it and as chair she is the one that allowed testimony from NON-Anchorage residents, opening the door to Prevo.
ReplyDeleteIt needs to go on the ballot. It needs to be passed by the voters. Then the voters need to vote Dan Sullivan out of office the next chance they get. Unless he resigns first since he'll be a "lame duck".
Everyone should let Sullivan know his days are numbered and that he should run for Mayor of Wasilla, since that seems to be where his support is and those are the only voters he cares about.
Oh, and TOLD YOU SO. I called it.
I just posted this over at the flats and Shannyn's blog. I hope others from outside follow my lead. AKA Tantef
ReplyDeleteI do not live in Anchorage, and hence have no voice in the matter of individual Representatives. I do not even live in Alaska, hence do not have a voice in Alaska politics. However, I do travel and planned to travel to Alaska in ‘10. Anchorage WAS on my itinarary as was Eagle and Fairbanks. I have cancelled my flight reservation and will not be going voluntarily to a State that does not value all people. Between the gay discrimination, the Native Alaskan discrimination and the shocking treatment of the homeless Alaska has ceased to be the attractive place I have seen it as for the last 50 years.
