Some nights are filled with magic.

Last night was the MudPAC party to help raise money for AKM and Shannyn to attend Netroots Nation in Pittsburgh.

After the week that I had I was not much in the mood for a party, but my friends were fairly insistent.

When I arrived I found AKM busily updating the comments on Mudflats and Shannyn playing the gracious hostess. They were both very dressed up and absolutely gorgeous.

There was great food, drinks, and fascinating people to talk to, and soon I found myself having a very lovely time. And then things took a rather surreal turn.

After sitting engaged in conversation for an hour or so I headed outside and found AKM in deep conversation with filmmaker/author Geoffrey Dunn and "best Alaskan Governor ever" Tony Knowles.

I had met both men earlier using my real first name, but as I walked up this time AKM introduced me as Gryphen of the Immoral Minority. Immediately both of their faces lit up and they each told me how much they enjoyed both The Immoral Minority and Mudflats, and how thrilled they were to finally meet us. You literally could have knocked me over with a feather.

(Geoffrey Dunn, Susan Knowles and Tony Knowles. Photo courtesy of AKM.)

I learned later that Tony Knowles had come to the party for the sole purpose of meeting the Alaskan bloggers. Apparently he has been following our work and wanted the opportunity to meet us face to face. (Can you believe that?)

I have to tell you that when your political idol tells you that he has your blog bookmarked on his computer, and reads you every day, it is a feeling that you will never forget.

As he was leaving Tony took my hand in both of his and thanked me for my courage and important work. Wow!

But there was yet more magic in store for us that night.

As I sat inside talking to a friend, I noticed a young lady sit down at the piano in the living room. She was slight, very pretty, and as it turned out quite full of surprises.

Moments later I heard piano music. I turned around in my chair to get a better look just as this amazing voice burst forth from this tiny wisp of a girl. Her voice was so clear, and so powerful, that she literally filled the house with her incredible talent.

I only learned later that she was in fact Geoffrey Dunn's fourteen year old daughter, Tess Dunn. Tess is an aspiring singer, who has already released an album, and has written over a HUNDRED songs!

I sat and talked to Mr. Dunn, his beautiful wife, and amazing daughter into the wee hours of the morning. The topics changed often but the laughter and merriment lasted until it was finally time to say goodnight.

It has taken me right up until just a few hours ago to completely process everything I learned last night, but the one very important thing I came away with is that what the Alaskan bloggers do is appreciated by people far and wide.

A humbling realization if ever there were one.

Knowles and Cooper were both great Governors, but Knowles was always my favorite.

I am glad you realized how much we all appreciate the work you do and how well you handle the grief you get in return.

Maybe we can get Palin's witch doctor preacher to take her on tour with him and get her the hell out of Alaska.

Wowza, Gryphen! Indeed a magical evening!

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if you (and the other AK bloggers) had many other notable followers. I believe that many of us found you (all of the AK bloggers) when we needed to figure out who SP really is; if not for the fact that you're all amazing writers/bloggers, it's not likely that you'd still have the following that you do. (I suppose that it doesn't hurt any that Alaskan politics is more addicting than most reality shows either ... )

  4. see here is the thing...I have known you since 2005...and had you bookmarked since then...and I told you over the years that you have a wonderful blog, and then last summer ( the palin summer) I started to DO AK Blog Round Ups every week- and I was so thrilled at how wonderful all of the bloggers up there were...and are..YOU all are an amazing group of people- I am so proud to know you all and follow your writings...

And yeah, as a blogger...Bad things happen...BUT the Connections made are real and there are truly some amazing people out there...and they do appreciate your amazing work here on this blog..and your courage...

    Have Hope...always...

there is always Something Better just around the corner...always....

What a great post, I often wonder how many people in polotics and even celebrities, read these blogs. That's the great thing about it, you're annymoose with writing any post and give your opinion. Democrats are like that, they are open to discussion and able to admit that they were "wrong", you guys know what I mean so, I won't go any further.

A Message to Alaskans about the Stimulus Veto and the Health Care Town HallsShare
    Yesterday at 9:33pm
Tomorrow begins an important week for Alaskans.

On Monday, state lawmakers will meet to override my veto of stimulus funds. As Governor, I did my utmost to warn our legislators that accepting stimulus funds will further tie Alaska to the federal government and chip away at Alaska’s right to chart its own course. Enforcing the federal building code requirements, which Governor Parnell and future governors will be forced to adopt in order to accept these energy funds, will eventually cost the state more than it receives. There are clear ropes attached, and Alaskans will soon find themselves tied down by codes which will dictate how we build and renovate homes and businesses. The state has hundreds of millions of dollars already budgeted for conservation, weatherization and renewable energy development. Legislators don’t need to play politics as usual and accept these funds and the ropes that come with them.

Also this week, Alaskans will join Senators Murkowski and Begich in town hall meetings to discuss the current health care legislation. There are many disturbing details in the current bill that Washington is trying to rush through Congress, but we must stick to a discussion of the issues and not get sidetracked by tactics that can be accused of leading to intimidation or harassment. Such tactics diminish our nation’s civil discourse which we need now more than ever because the fine print in this outrageous health care proposal must be understood clearly and not get lost in conscientious voters’ passion to want to make elected officials hear what we are saying. Let’s not give the proponents of nationalized health care any reason to criticize us.

    - Sarah Palin

  9. How wonderful. These are the times that envelope one with the realization that there are so many good people. Sometimes these evenings happen when you most need them to restore all the good inside.
I have you bookmarked and so appreciate all you do.

the quitter as been advised that she will be held responsible for "inciting violence" as howard dean said on nation TV today...

    so she's CYA.

We're not that stupid, Sarah. And if you want to be thought of as rational, you'll have to denounce your death panel baloney and apologize for pallin around with terrorists. Until then, see you on visiting days to the looney bin only.

  11. Friends in high places - you deserve them, Gryphen. America is forever in debt to you and the other AK bloggers who brought us the REAL vetting of a dishonest, unethical, totally unqualified VP candidate - when the MSM failed to do so.
As far as Scarah's latest Facebook post (above), it is like she has a split personality. How can she suddenly try to appear polite/reasonable after the nonsensical diatribe of of hateful lies she spewed just a day or two ago?

  12. Oh my goodness, the gathering was like a modern day version of "the salons" of old, filled with intelligent, artistic people gathering to enjoy food and drink and share ideas!

So jealous, but so happy to hear that you had an evening that took your mind off of your stressful week.

See, you're not alone, and it seems you are supported by some of the finest minds in Alaska and America!

No doubt this has been a very tough week what with lies being told and insinuations being made about your character that well all know is born simply from the lunatics who are desperate to make you look bad in the hopes of convincing others that Sarah isn't the absolute nutcase we all know she is.

While I am sure that it has been difficult to sit and ignore those lunatics, just remember who they serve and why they are doing it. They are desperate and it shows every time they attack you. They don't see their own hypocrisy, but the majority of people who pay attention, not only see it, but point it out.

Making sure that the truth is known about the Bitter Quitter is important lest we all be fooled by the con she is trying to pull on all of us. Thankfully there are more and more people every day who are realizing it and distancing themselves from the likes of her.

I'm glad you went to the party and it sounds as if you enjoyed yourself. As difficult as it may be, don't let these tools get you down. They can't attack your viewpoints and idea's so they are left with trying to attack you instead. That shows how little they have in the way of substance.

    Very cool post.

Psst.....you forgot to list Brian in the photo of Dunn and the Knowles'.

  15. How exciting and gratifying! What a terrific evening you must have had; the Dunn family is quite amazing, one smart sibling after another, churning out terrific writing, and now the next generation getting into music - This bodes well for our culture!

    Congratulations on the kudos.

Gryphen, you really are an amazing person. When are you going to realize and accept that? Well until you do, just realize that your site is bookmarked by thousands of people who know that you are invaluable for your insight, your shoot from the hip straight-forward comments, and for your incredible trailblazing blogging! Thanks Gryphen - for all that you do and keep the faith!

  18. Gryph, we disagree on alot of things politicaly, but we do agree on enough! I have found your honesty refreshing. Wish you were on 'our' side! But I have a feeling your on whatever side is dishing out the truth. I hope you hang in here, and I hope you can bring that woman down hard, so we in the GOP party can move forward and forget McCain ever plucked her out of obscurity. Working together is what matters. Not working apart.

Wow, Gryphen, what a lovely scene you painted. A humble person is fine quality. Wow, Gregory Dunn...

I read the message from Palin a few comments up and I would say that she has a better writer.

Last I heard, Alaska paid $0.82 into the Federal Government and received $1.82 from the Federal Government. And she said what? By accepting the monies, it would cost more than the State could afford. Tying Alaska to the Federal Government more. What's up with that? Trying to use the rest for us for all we're worth and then quit the union? How can one not think that the cost of building an energy efficient climate controlled structure on the front would end up saving the owner monies and energy costs for years to come? New technologies could make codes obsolete over time. The warning with ropes seems to indicate that the Federal Government wishes to place harm upon Americans, indeed, negative as if evil. The USA is the oldest existing constitutional republic in the world. A nation of laws, codes and regulations to benefit the individual, i.e., the owner or further owner.

Regarding Palin's health care comments, it should be obvious the move; start a spat then exalt thyself. The Death Panel comment was outrageous. Worse knowing that the Federal Government stepped in when 254 aged or disabled Alaskan Medicare/Medicaid patients died under Palin's term. Then after all the fear mongering spin over the weekend, Palin calls for calm. Well, that's my opinion, FWIW.

Well, thanks, Gryphen, for sharing your evening and for letting me ramble and rant!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Honestly Gryphen, you should be bigger than Sarah Palin at this point! The truth has more weight than what Palin has wrought on Alaska and the country. You are the real Patriot, my friend! Don't ever cower to the cowards like Sarah. So happy that you are getting the attention you deserve! Keep up the great work.

  23. KB, I don't consider ANYBODY a "nobody" on this blog. I appreciate and value ALL of my visitors.

Even the ones who respectfully disagree with me.

As great as it was to get praise from Governor Knowles and Geoffrey Dunn, I am very thankful for the support and positive input I have received from all of you.

You are my extended family and I could not do this without you.

So let me take a moment to say thank you. You are all stars in my eyes.

Alaskan bloggers did the real work of vetting SP last election; this country would have been hurtling toward destruction if all of you had not been willing to step up and speak out.

As for the Quitters last statement, we know that she is already getting blowback from her "Death Panel" statement.. now she is trying for damage control... too late!

P.S. There is a very short, utterly hilarious YouTube clip of "Palin Speechwriter on Obama Death Panels" about 57 seconds long. If you can get Lee Stranahan's permission to post on your site, I know it it would be fun. (Thanks to the Mudpuppy who originally posted this link!)

Gryphen, so glad to hear you got out and were able to enjoy yourself after the horrid week and the vile GOP stalkers.
And we certainly know who is behind it all.
Glad that you got to meet with Tony & Geoffry and hear his Daughter play piano and sing. It sounds like we will all be hearing from her soon, as a new rising star.
Music always makes a evening memorable and magical.
And yes don't forget We ♥ you!

  27. Gryphen ... just read this post (late in the day) ..."you liiiiiiiiike him ..." that's what I thought of (the Dunns and Knowles regarding you)! So true. I start my blogging day each day with this site and then I use your links to go to the Mudflats, Celtic Diva ... and on. As I have said many times, I could not have gotten through the past campaign/election without you. My eyes tear every time I think of that. I will google Geoffrey Dunn (I know the name) and his daughter Tess right now. What a lovely post. Thanks for sharing. Namaste.
