Geoffrey Dunn agrees that Palin is no longer writing for herself, and links to me (among others) to illustrate that point.

Here is an excerpt from Geoffrey's excellent piece on Huffington Post:

So what is this attempt at rebranding Palin all about? You can lay some good money down that here's what happened: The big boys -- her attorney-agent Robert Barnett and probably her publisher, too, Rupert Murdoch -- had a sit-down with young Sarah and told her she had better pull her mud together. They have a lot riding on the deal. Murdoch has anted up a seven-figure advance for a book written by someone who can't construct two cohesive sentences together. Barnett has staked his considerable reputation on the line. Rest assured that Palin had the law laid down to her. And firmly.

Amen brother.

  1. Gryphen, Did you see this from Andrew Sullivan?

The MSM are now treating Levi Johnston with their trade-marked breezy dismissal as a publicity whore. He sure is. Good on him. When you have been used by a political machine - when they made you cut off your mullet to make-over your image - you get a chance in America to make a few bucks by making yourself over. That means, of course, that we should be highly skeptical of what he is now saying. But in the Vanity Fair interview, which I noted a week ago, Levi nonetheless said something truly remarkable that really does get at something awry about the MSM, John McCain and the Republican machine:

Sarah told me she had a great idea: we would keep it a secret—nobody would know that Bristol was pregnant. She told me that once Bristol had the baby she and Todd would adopt him. That way, she said, Bristol and I didn’t have to worry about anything. Sarah kept mentioning this plan. She was nagging—she wouldn’t give up. She would say, “So, are you gonna let me adopt him?” We both kept telling her we were definitely not going to let her adopt the baby. I think Sarah wanted to make Bristol look good, and she didn’t want people to know that her 17-year-old daughter was going to have a kid.

This is a first-hand account from someone as close to Palin as possible. It alleges a proposed conspiracy by the former vice-presidential candidate to hide her daughter's pregnancy and pass it off as her own to avoid embarrassment. It was not, according to Levi, a one-off musing. It was a persistent nagging to present a massive lie to the world about Palin's own family life for cynical political purposes.

Does the fact that the father of Palin's grandson believes she is capable of a totally crazy conspiracy involving a fake pregnancy ring any bells? Is anyone in the MSM going to actually, you know, ask former governor Palin if this is true, and if it was the first and only time she had this kind of kooky Desperate Housewives scheme up her sleeve?

And where are the conservative commentators denouncing Levi as nuts and batshit and loony and out of bounds and outrageous and hate-filled as they did when a handful of bloggers, armed only with a completely implausible scenario about a pregnancy, asked simply for confirmation of Palin's maternity of her child, confirmation they never got.

And how would you pull off such a conspiracy anyway? Where would you find a doctor to fake a birth certificate? How would you persuade Bristol and Levi to go along with it? How would you find a hospital pliant enough to pull a bait-and-switch? How would you make yourself appear pregnant while your daughter was hidden away - when you are a sitting governor of a state and being photographed around the clock? How would you orchestrate not only a fake pregnancy but a fake birth? Only someone truly unhinged would dream of such a plot. And am I the only one who thinks it matters if this country might have put such an unhinged person in the most powerful office in the world?

That's why clearing up this increasingly surreal set of tabloid stories matters. It's not about Palin. It's about McCain and the GOP. Did they know any of these accusations before they selected her? And how did they get the MSM to acquiesce to no press conference and no questions about this core absurdity? Levi's new claim may be untrue, or a shot across the bow about more to come, or true only in this respect, i.e. Tripp. But if he is telling the truth - and he has been admirably straightforward for much of this psychodrama - then Mrs Palin has some 'splaining to do. And so do Mr McCain and Mr Kristol.

Amusing to read the Palincultistas who think that Obama doesn't write his own speeches or op-eds.

As if that justified Palin's stupidity.

They're so desperate for Obama's attention, it's pathetic.

Hey, people, he has other things to do right now...he cna't play in the sandbox with juvenile morons who have nothing better to do when running a state but watch reality TV shows.

LOL. Can't wait for Dunn's book.

Unfortunately, it has long been considered perfectly acceptable for books and speeches to be ghostwritten; articles are less common, but it's still done. Most people would be amazed to know how many of the "bestselling" novels they buy are written by someone who's name is not on the cover. Hint: if they publish more than two books a year (one, if they're heavily into playing on the side), then they're not "writing" them.

Fantastic pieces of work from Dunn and Sullivan. Everyone knows she's a total fake who can't string a subject and predicate together.

All you have to do is compare this "Op Ed" to what Sarah wrote about "her daddy" for the 2006 AK Governor's race.

Now THAT is some interesting Sarah Palin writing. She is such a joke. You know it's getting bad for them when her supporters troll around here!

Compare the juvenile mind that wrote those twitters with the now literate political genius writing under the same name. Sarah could not have progressed her thinking and vocabulary that much in the last month.

My favorite twitter from Sarah described a place that non-stop rain for several days as having "consistent rain." Well, of course rain is usually consistent, meaning it's the same wet stuff whether it is drizzle or downpour. Oh, sometimes it's acid rain, or snow (frozen rain), but consistent? I think that the journalist/journalism major mean to write "constant," meaning non-stop.

Anyone who uses "progress" as a verb, quotes refrigerator magnets, calls our government, regardless of which branch "Washington" or "The Feds" is not the same person writing for WSJ and Sarah's Face Book.

You know how famous people trademark their name as property, think Elvis or Marilyn Monroe, I think that Sarah has become a brand or trademark, available for the right price. Now let me see, what is the name for someone who sells themself..........(to the highest bidder or separate use clause for articles, interviews and/or dinners)......

Here's a link to some REAL Sarah Palin writing, circa 2006, when she ran for AK Gov. - http://cjrarchive.org/img/posts/PalinDaddyCJR.pdf

Now compare that to what we have today in the WSJ. SP was in her EARLY 40's when she penned the "Daddy" piece above.

I just read the CNN ticker about the ghostwtiters oped. It said that Sarah propsed as one of her solutions that seniors on Medicare should get vouchers to buy their own insurance. I am shocked no one has noticed she said this!! That means she is in favor of getting rid of Medicare completely. Is she out of her mind??? So in her view, all seniors AND disabled by the way should lose Medicare and get private insurance?????
I don't know if any of you really get whar she is saying. It is INSANE and do conservative seniors/disabled want to have Medicare taken from them?

The people behind her only care about money. I am furious that they are making it sound like she wrote this! And the media like CNN doesn't even question if it's really her or if content is accurate.

Palin wants to destroy/close Medicare and give seniors and disabled vouchers to buy insurance. That is crazy and you would think one of her stupid fans would see that she said that.

  10. The problem is, if she expects to be anything "BUT" Facebook, she's going to have to open that mouth.

    Ignorance always comes out first.

They could hire Daniel Webste to ghostwrite for her, but she is still the same cheap trash media whore she's always been. Dumb, incoherent, word salad Sarah. She is not capable of being "groomed" to be presentable in polite society.

She couldn't be made presentable for VP - and her "opinions" are limited to Facebook? This is not the way to lead the Party. Well, OK, the current Republican Party would go for this.

She needs to be grilled by a skilled interviewer--not from Fox News--but she would never consent to that. Or her handlers wouldn't. It is SO clever to just marketing her as a "brand," where she can just keep taking pot shots at everything the fringe conservatives are against. She will never have to prove herself in public or answer an unscripted question ever again. You will never see a press conference or an interview in which SP and her handlers are not fully in control. It's just ghostwriters and puppeteers pulling the strings. All she has to do is smile and try not to show her fangs.

    Margot above wrote the following:

She's absolutely right in saying such a plot and the thinking behind it is unhinged. Which is why I'VE always maintained that it is not possible. The first baby, Trig, has to be Sarah's because how in the world would you keep such baby-switching, fake pregnancies, fake deliveries quiet. This isn't 1809, it's 2009! Everybody knows everything. You simply cannot keep the above scenario out of the public. Too many people, including the Johnstons, would know the truth. Simply NOT possible.

And the problem with our side even proposing it as a possibility - Bristol having borne two babies, not one - is that it makes us look as loony as those idiotic "Birthers".

I say, let's return to reality here. No one can keep a secret these days, particularly one with as many people who would have to be involved.

Let's concentrate on Palin's own, WELL-DOCUMENTED lunacies (and there are certainly a lot of them!).

  13. phoebes-in-santa-fe, I believe that point you have missed is that not EVERYBODY did keep he secret. and that has been what my posts of he last few months have been alluding to.

What phoebes-in-santa-fe is missing is that Levi did not state (we are assuming because we are pretty sure that's what she did) that Sarah was planning to fake a pregnancy, just that she was going to adopt the baby.

In some ways, that is even worse if she planned to keep 'everything secret' because that means a genetically related offspring would be raised as an adoptee with unknown parentage (except to the fakers). And the child would be raised to think that its biological mother was really its stepsister. Truly the stuff of soap opera. Only it's for real.

Gryphen, believe me, I'm a life-long Democrat from a solidly liberal, Democratic family. My father, who died two years ago at the age of 91, threatened to divorce my mother if she EVER voted Republican. (I think she might have cheated on him a few times in that regard, though!). I have worked my ass off in Democratic politics on both the state and national level since I could first vote in 1972. But, I'm also a well-read history-jock and I know that conspiracies are almost always impossible to keep secret. I might be the only person who thinks that Lee Harvey Oswald got off three lucky shots with his old rifle.

I just don't want OUR side to get a reputation as loonies for propagating what I see as an impossibility. I've been reading your posts for the last few months, and I have enjoyed your writing and your digging for the truth behind Sarah Palin. She was one decrepit heartbeat away from the Presidency! I realise that I am nit-picking on this one point - the only one in all you've written about - but I want so much to have the truth, what ever it is, will out.

  18. Slightly OT, but related to Palin not writing her own material -- she's not showing up to invited events again, either, too...

    From HuffPo Sept. 2, 2009:
Sarah Palin...has been invited to testify before the New York State Senate about how reform will impact the state's elderly.

New York State Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz, a conservative Democrat from the Bronx who is sympathetic to Palin's views, will be hosting a Senate Aging Committee hearing next week on "President Obama's proposed health care reform and the impact it will have on New York State senior citizens."

By now everybody knows Palin didn't show up. Instead of testifying, Palin submitted written testimony, publicizing it via her latest Facebook "Note."

Did Palin fall down a well, or suffer the fate of Fredo Corleone in a family takeover by her Wasilla Mafia?

Other than some unsubstantiated (no photographs, and how unlikely is THAT in this age of ubiquitious cellphone cameras?) after-the-fact "sightings" in an "apartment complex" in San Diego a couple of weeks ago. NO ONE has seen Palin since early August.

Lessee -- her next perhaps-not-verifiable appearance is supposed to be in 2 weeks, in Hong Kong, where the media is barred from attending (how bizarre is that, considering how Palin has sought media coverage incessantly?) and no one is allowed to ask her any questions.

I'm suspicious that a lookalike stand-in will show up in Hong Kong. After all, Saddam Hussein had SEVERAL lookalikes who showed up in his stead, and even the movie "Dave" featured a lookalike for the (fictional) President.

I think the "Who's your Daddy" piece was actually written by Daddy dearest. Read the sentence about "holding the warm ungulate parts" and ask yourself if 'ungulate' was in Sarah's word bank. (Daddy was a biology teacher, so it would be in his word bank).

That sentence is like his signature to the article, and it's Extremely Creepy.

Miss Sarah may have been relying on ghostwriters for a very long time, so to her it's perfectly 'normal' and she doesn't get the cognitive disconnect between 'her' written words and her actual speech and writing patterns. The "Who's Your Daddy ?" article is actually quite grammatical and practically oozes self-adulation, as certain types of fathers would like to be seen in their child's eyes.

The entire- English speaking world who is more than 50 years old knows Ted Sorenson wrote Kennedy's speeches.

It doesn't matter who writes them: it's how they are delivered and how much the speaker learns while sitting beside advisors and the speechwriter.

For example, every 1L knows of some kid in Civ Pro who was clueless the first time they had to brief a case. Some froze completely. If they
have good friends and an understanding teacher they eventually get it
and the day comes when they can speak, many times eloquently, on
principles of law that once baffled them.

So, yes, Palin has new advisors who have played the "big room". Yes, she has a very bright and glib speechwriter. (That, as I said, was evident from the "Why the long face, John" zinger a month or two ago.

The question is, will she be able to absorb the issues addressed in the speeches to the point she can speak extemporaneously about them--in a debate, for instance, and make the issues accessible not only to readers of the WSJ but to the farmer in North Platte, Nebraska.

There are two fundamental skills her advisors will attempt to impart to her: 1) how to write for the pundits and intelligentsia and 2) How to say the same thing in the language of the common man or woman.

It will take time but one thing is clear. She is surrounded by "A" list handlers now and is being brought along very slowly by Murdock and Ailes to peak in two or three years.

You can count on them picking her spots with a great deal more focus
    on the end game.

No matter how anyone wants to spin it, she realized she needed major rehab to get back into the game and she seemingly has assembled a team that at least in the early stages, knows exactly what buttons to push.

Her keynote speech in China will tell a lot. If she goes belly-up, the chances are slim to none she'll ever be more than a publicity machine.
If today's op-ed represents the kind of game she'll bring to the table at the CSLA and if she delivers it effectively, it's a whole new ball game.

Anon 10:19, you give Sarah too much credit when you say that she has assembled a great team. Murdoch & Co. have invested millions in her. They have assembled the team of handlers, writers, trainers, and they be the ones who have locked her away for her own good. If Sarah was still in charge, she would have lashed out at Levi for his VF article. Her silence speaks volumes.

This is the same VP candidate who failed miserably at 2 MSM interviews. She never showed up on a Sunday morning political talk show. When she finally thought up a response to Katy Couric's questions, it was the junior high response, "You're not the center of the world, Katy." Sarah is emotional, immature and impulsive. The Murdoch crowd want to get their money's worth, and they are doing a better job of handling her than McCain and his staff ever did.

Or else I am completely wrong, and Sarah is in major rehab, and has authorized the use of her name for publicity and political purposes to pay the expensive rehab bill. We might not even recognize her if we ever get to look at her again.

Murdoch and Palin's attorney have a lot at stake and so does Palin BUT you cannot "make silk out of a sow's ear."

No matter how many ghost written articles, no matter even if they are well written articles, sooner or later Palin has to appear in public, she has to speak in public and the more articles written in her name, and especially if they are well written, THE MORE IT WILL BE DEMANDED OF HER THAT SHE SPEAK EXTEMPORANEOUSLY (SP) IN PUBLIC AND AS WE ALL KNOW, "THEREIN LIES THE RUB."

If you thought the Couric interviews were funny, wait until she is asked to discourse on HER OWN ARTICLE and she is unable to.

Murdock and the agent/attorney are fighting a losing battle, especially if the book advance is already in her bank account. Murdock will want his money back, but he will have to sue her to get it. Remember what Palin said when she was Mayor and was caught spending $50,000 unauthorized to remodel her office? "I'll do whatever I want until a court tells me I can't."

When Palin has pissed off someone (Murdoch? her agent/atty?) enough that they take her to court, or when some legal authority (legislators, personnel board, APOC, court system) get their hands on her--and eventually they will--she will be destroyed.

Palin will tire of being controlled--narcissist cannot handle this extreme threat to their reality bubble--and she WILL rebel. She NEEDS that photo shoot, she NEEDS to speak her own words. SHE does NOT see her speech as word salad. To her, her message is God sent and in her delusional reality, her words DO make sense and ANYONE who disagrees with her is the enemy including people who give her and people who barter seven figure book deals.

Murdock and the agent/atty need to watch out. Until Palin is broought into a court, before she is physically confined, she is capable of physical violence and I firmly believe she will draw blood before this is all over, even though "over" may mean some time after she is out of the spotlight.

With her national humilation, this narcissist has no place to run, she is cornered and has no way out except to face real reality ( an impossibilityf or her) or to "come out fighting."

She will do ANYTHING she feels is necessary to defend her version of reality and she will rationalize it as SELF DEFENSE AND THEREFORE MORAL AND LEGAL.

Narcissist ALWAYS self destruct. They do NOT heal.

These people behind her are not stupid. They know she is an insane lunatic diva that can be used but she is NOT presidential material and they know it. It would be a disaster and one good speech in China is NOT a game changer! That is ridiculous, the media won't be there. She had a good speech at the RNC remember? And look what happened? She had an A team then too.
The woman is not being groomed for president. Murdoch just does not want to lose millions on his book investment. Do you really think they don't know she is a psycho loaded cannon?? She QUIT her job. Sorry she is through politically. She isn't capable of discussion.

And just wait until it sinks in to every senior conservative that Sarah said she wants to get rid of Medicare! That is huge!! If you look statistically at who supports Sarah it is conservative older men and women. Younger people voted for Obama and support universal health care. Those seniors would turn on her in a minute if she said let's take away Medicare and give you vouchers.

If Sarah was so articulate on this subject she would be a serious voice in politics and on tv doing interviews. She isn't. She is An unemployed "twitchy" ex governor who is trying to keep her name in the news so her book sells.
Do a google search. No one even cares that Sarah wrote an op Ed. If they cared, her Medicare comments would be huge. She is irrelevent. They can try to dress her and train her but she is still an uneducated, inarticulate diva hillbilly ex beauty queen nutcase from Wasilla.

Sarah polls terribly with Democrats and independents. If there were an election, she would be a terrible candidate because she might at best get 35% of the vote. If that is the best the GOP has they are in big trouble..
In the primary other Republicans would make mincemeat of the QUITTER-what if the job is tough or people don't say nice things about her or her family, how would she handlevit by quitting?? That is the big picture-she is a quitter who does not even have the ability to have a verbal live discussion about any serious or complex issue. Period.

@10:19 and 10:44 - For weeks now you've been trying to sell us on her "new team" and Palin's "rebranding." Sorry, but the ship has sailed long ago; it doesn't matter what happens in Hong Kong. It's too late to rebrand nutty Sarah Palin. The only folks buying what you and Palin are selling are, well, you and Sarah Palin. Lynn Vincent, is that you?

Re: Mommom: If you put in "red shoes + Palin" you get 1,4000,00 + returns.

Re: Anonymous 12:48: Mispelled his name? O.K. "Dunn + Palin" gets 67 returns on Google News. "Stalin + Palin" gets 87 and he hasn't lifted a pencil in 100 years.

Re: Anonymous at 2:08. Ratchet up the thorazine drip. ('I'm not a doctor but you people make me feel like Karl menninger.

Re: Anonymous @ 10:44: Nixon was also a Quaker. I mention that because among Quakers there is an expression "Fishing is much more than fish." I think you know what I mean. He was also a quitter unless you can come up with a different interpretation to his statement in 1962, "You won't have Dick Nixon to kick around any more."

Re: Anonymous @ 2:55: "It doesn't matter what happens in Hong Kong". You could be right but then again it doesn't matter what Obama says tonight. The world has discovered his "kryptonite" . Put a crisis in front of him and he melts like the wicked witch of the west--or was it the east?

It turns out he's mortal. I'm guessing there's not going to be a "Gospel According to Rahm" added to the bible after Revelations,.

  43. I don't think that there are enough years to educate her up to speed. That is the only hope I have for her not running for any office ever again. There is no way short of a brain transplant that she could ever be interviewed on the Sunday morning shows. You just can't fix stupid.

@3:48 : you are failing here. You are out of your intellectual depth. It is sad. You are not smart enough for this assignment. Report back to Sarah & Murdoch! You are hurting Sarah's image!

Sarah is her own worst enemy. For the sake of her book and more importantly the money to be made from the sale of her book, her publisher is limiting her appearances. If she isn't visible, her loyal fans will flock to book signings and tune in to TV appearances.

Sarah is learning to not give it away for free! Dinner with her is now worth $25,000+ and speeches given by Sarah now cost in the six figures. This should push her book sales especially the advance orders for her book. Networks will start to put up big $$$ for interviews.

The more she stays out of public view, the more her price increases. The ghost-written op/eds are just to keep her name in the headlines and to keep her faithful writing out checks to her PAC. I don't think it is so much "rebranding" but a marketing ploy by her publisher.

@5:38, I would agree with you except the book won't be out for a year. That's a loooong time to "hide" someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. She can't help but rebel, if that is the plan.
