It seems very unlikely that the winner in the Massachusetts Senate race will be determined today. Update: But then again....

Brad Friedman is drawing attention to the fact that those same Diebold machines which may have instrumental in electing George W. Bush in 2004 are still in place in MA, which of course raises the ugly specter of voter fraud. (You can read his very informative post by clicking the title.)

Martha Coakley's campaign has already alleged that there are voting irregularities, including two cases of pre-marked ballots for Scott Brown, and has issued this statement.

MEDIA ADVISORY: COAKLEY CAMPAIGN TO DISCUSS INTEGRITY OF ELECTION

Multiple Reports Of Ballots Pre-Marked For Scott BrownBOSTON - Following multiple independent reports of ballots being given to voters pre-marked for Republican Scott Brown, Coakley Campaign Manager Kevin Conroy and Attorney Marc Elias will hold a press conference in the Sheraton Grand Ballroom at 5:30 pm.

I think with so much riding on this election we can all rest assured that this will NOT be settled anytime soon. I predict that we will still be trying to determine who the new Senator from Massachusetts is right up until the weekend.

Update: With 40% of precincts reporting we now have Brown at 52.6% and Coakley at 46.4%. It does not look very good.

Update 2: Coakley concedes! Well so much my for my Nate Silver impersonation. Martha Coakley wasted no time in calling Scott Brown and congratulating him on his victory.

I guess it is only Republicans who refuse to admit their loss.

However having said that if the Republican candidate won fair and square then by all means the Democrat should step aside and let that person take their seat without a bunch of unnecessary drama. I just hope that after the dust settles we are all certain that there was no fraud involved in this election.

Update 3: Brad Friedman "congratulates" Martha Coakley for her swift concession.

Several supporters of Democrat Martha Coakley were injured during her rush to get to the phone as quickly as possible in order to concede the race for the U.S. Senate in MA to Scott Brown even before AP called the race in favor of the Republican.

I have to say that I was also amazed at Coakley's rush to concede. It would have been nice if she had at least waited until all of the votes were counted. Like I said before, I just hope we don't come to regret her impatience.

At the very least it would have been nice to put off listening to this ridiculous woman gloat for another couple of days.

Do you like hearing that Democrats? No? Well then you sure as hell better get your shit together.

And Sauerkraut, I know that I blasted Coakley a few days ago, but darn it, I was frustrated by any semblance of "complacency" from any Democrat, either in MA or nationwide. Didn't mean to offend but darnit, let's keep this ball rolling. We all have job to do, especially those running for office.

Win or lose in MA tonight (or if it goes to court), Scott Brown will be running for President in 2012. They found the "prettiest" one they could find, new face, TeaBagger credentials, has no problem telling lies, the Cosmo spread was a plus (like they pushed Palin's sex appeal). Brown is a male Sarah Palin.

    Mark my words.

DEM AG says nothing to this:

The Massachusetts secretary of state is discounting reports of voter irregularities in the state's Senate special election.

A spokesman for Secretary of State William Galvin said Tuesday two reports of spoiled ballots could not be verified or found to be widespread.

In one case, someone voting in Cambridge claimed a ballot had already been marked for Republican Scott Brown. There was no way to verify the claim, but the ballot was destroyed.

In another case, a person in Boston reported finding a ballot inside a privacy folder also marked for Brown. Officials say it may have been left inadvertently by an earlier voter.

Aides to Democrat Martha Coakley called a news conference to raise voter awareness of the concerns.

This is ridiculous. We have been arguing about votes and voter registration credibility for decades now. . .from all parties.

I'm all for stalling under the law. . both parties do it, it's righteous. But come on now, the weaknesses inherent in our voting technology? Positively unAmerican. . .there is no excuse.

  11. When the results come in and Coakley is not shown as the winner, it will not be because of voter fraud or any problem with the machines. If Coakley loses, and that seems to be the case based on what I've been told, then it will be because she got complacent and arrogant (see my thoughts on my blog about that), and simply did not campaign. I lived in MA for years and the people there get really pissed if they feel they've been dissed.

I have a high opinion of Coakley but she really blew a sure thing. It was her's. But it wasn't hers until the votes were counted. She apparently forgot that the real election was AFTER she handed Mikey Capuano his arse. And she forgot that she needed to reach out to his supporters because those folks don't just get mad. In this case, they will be bragging about how the got even.

Wait until Capuano's supporters realize that they shot themselves in the nuts.

If Brown wins there's going to be an aftershock throughout the democratic party. If an unknown can overcome a 30-point deficit in the polls, what will candidates do who are now in races that can be close?

The answer: go to the mattresses and distance themselves from the White House.

This is a kill shot for the health care bill and conceivably the administration who grossly underestimated the gravity of the situation.

He's an exhibitionist - we've now got a US Senator who posed nude in Cosmo! Geez. No class. He encourages hate and then lies about it such as the video of his supporter saying "shove a hair curler up Coakley's butt" and Brown says "we can do that". And that sleazy, slimy smile. 42. So, if Scott Brown won, we have established that doing nude spreads in mags is acceptable, nothing to go off the deep end about. Nothing to suggest someone isn't a good father or anything, not a good role model, not someone with questionable morals who shouldn't be leadin' the people. Posing nude in magazines (and presumable being paid for it) is A-OK, I mean, if an elected senator can do it, it must be morally acceptable

Actually I don't necessarily disagree with that general premise. I just don't think people should be judged under different standards.

If Republicans embrace Scott Brown, then they can hardly decry actions of their enemies (Democrats?) for the same behavior.

Ergo, nude posing is OK, not porn, not detrimental to a political campaign. Yippee!!!

Gryphen, You said to the Democrats: "Well then you sure as hell better get your shit together." I say, right on. I just sent a long, blistering email to my esteemed Democratic senator for Ohio with precisely that message.

I've voted in every election since 1961 (48 years!), and during that time I've always been a liberal/progressive Democrat. Quite frankly, I no longer recognize the world we live in. I know, I know: I'm getting old, our country is "in transition," etc. Yet the people who call themselves Democrats in Congress nowadays have revealed themselves to be sniveling, self-regarding cowards who have no interest in achieving unity and serving our country. I've never seen this happen in quite this way until now. They have opened the gates wide for the right-wing crazies, who are howling with glee at having further undermined Barack Obama.

On her Facebook page Sarah Palin lauds Scott Brown, saying he'll arrive in Washington, D.C., in a pickup truck. This yuppie US attorney who posed nude in Cosmo??? Please spare me. It's just another a media catch phrase that appeals to the lowest instincts of rabid know-nothings, and it's despicable.

The spineless dims have picked some duds for candidates lately. Governor in Va. and Senator in Mass., and probably others.

Not surprisingly, they did not campaign well, and the longer they were in view the lower they fell in the polls. Nor did the DNC, of the WH act like they cared much.

The RepoTaliban wants to win, the teabaggin’ rabble wants to destroy, the spineless dims are - well spineless. They had the electorate behind them full force up until the Senate destroyed the health care bill. Now they only have their party hacks.

If the dims leadership is not willing to extend itself for so important a seat as one for Senator, then they literally want to loose their 60 vote majority and to hell with their electorate, their jobs will be much easier now. They can’t win much of anything so they can just sell their souls and their electorate and stop pretending that they are not bought by special interests.

Otherwise, the empty suits driving a pickup truck will prevail (that wasn't new, BTW, Fred Thompson did the same thing in TN). They have no new ideas, just recycling the same old shit.

Couple of thoughts on the Brown win:

Perhaps the loss by Coakley might have been a blacklash toward women politicians as a result of Palin's high disapproval ratings. Palin has set back women in politics because of her polarization and her stupidity.

Brown and Cantor may be the fresh new faces of the Republican Party. I am happy for the win because it may well take SP off the front pages and relegate her name to the entertainment section. If the media makes Brown the darling of the Republican Party, it may mean Granny's 15 minutes of fame are ticking away.

  79. My only comfort is that perhaps the Dems will now give up trying to appease the Repubs - maybe the 60 votes did more harm than good when it makes you kowtow to scum like Leibermen...

  81. LoveandKnishesfrom Brooklyn : and btw, I love your handle (cause I am a NewYorker wannabe) - I didn't sleep last night either. Not only is what's happening in our country re health care and other social issues so important to me, but I really thought and hoped for a cultural, political, social renaissance (and maybe it will still happen). Also, the Kennedy legacy is important to me. Go read Shannyn Moore this morning. I really like her take on this. You too Gryphen. P.S. Gryphen, take "you know who" out, please.

I know it's too early to speculate, but I think the republican's are going to be looking at a couple of newcomers for the 2012 presidential election. One MAY be Brown. He looks good, and really what else matters to Republican's? Another is Gary Johnson. Just starting to hear about him on a national level. He also looks good. Palin is getting old and will soon be too old to be the sexy little darling. How many 50 year olds are someones wet dream?

I think what everyone is trying to say is -
"...you (Sarah Palin) who is having fits about Levi Johnston posing for Playgirl and how "classless" that was, do not consider it classless when Scott Brown did it. Why the double standard?"

  84. Did Greta ask how does it feel to lose of $P? I think Greta has had it with $P. Girl crush is over.

Geta really should stop calling $P Governor Palin.

Glenn Beck thinks an intern will turn up dead when Brown goes to Washington?

    Male or female intern?

Jeez, these people are stranger than fiction
