Will a GOP win in Massachusetts reinforce future use of the tactics favored by Sarah Palin and the Teabaggers? Do you really want to chance it?

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) lashed out at Scott Brown's Massachusetts senatorial campaign on Monday for adopting "intimidation tactics" that he deemed "reminiscent of the dangerous atmosphere of Sarah Palin's 2008 campaign rallies."

In a post to his own site, Kerry insisted that reports of out-of-state tea party protesters showing up at Brown rallies, the vandalizing of Martha Coakley signs, and the threats of violence and rape directed at Coakley herself were "not how we do business in Massachusetts."

Since Sarah Palin burst onto the national scene we have seen this explosion of political dirty tricks and threats of violence following in her wake. This so-called Christian woman has awakened deeply held prejudices and barely contained rage, and provided a direction for it to be unleashed.

We saw it during the campaign, with signs calling Obama a Muslim and a terrorist.

We see it in the Teabagger rallies with signs that call the Democrats socialists and Obama a fascist.

We see it from her supporters on Facebook as they threaten the judges who ruled to keep public Tripp's custody case.

I, my fellow Alaskan bloggers, and others have seen it unleashed in threatening e-mails and calls to our place of employment in an attempt to shut us up.

And now we see the same tactics in Massachusetts.

In the case of Brown v. Coakley, there have been several incidents that have party members somewhere between concerned and outraged. On Sunday, an attendee at a Brown event called for the candidate to stick a curling iron up Coakley's butt. The next day, a comment was left on Facebook from a woman hoping that Coakley would get shot.

So look, if you live in Massachusetts run, don't walk, to your nearest polling place and vote to protect the legacy of Ted Kennedy from these hate filled, anti-American thugs. If they win there, they will be more energized then ever and stopping them in the future will be just that much harder.

Our country is much too good to allow the tactics of the likes of Sarah Palin to prevail. We stopped her here in Alaska, so now it is up to the fine folks in Massachusetts to follow our lead.

I am worried about this MA election and what it portends for our nation if Brown wins.

Coakley might not be the most charismatic candidate, but why should that mean more than her credentials?

Why are MA voters so apathetic? The forecast is for about half of the registered voters to show up. Those voters (about 2.2 million of the over 4 million eligible to vote) will truly have an impact on health care and all other progressive issues for the entire country.

Just being too lazy to take the time to vote for a candidate is no excuse.

I am exhausted from going to health care reform rallies in all types of weather, writing emails, sending faxes, making calls and generally trying to educate misinformed or incurious colleagues, but I can still drag myself out to vote. Voting is the only real tool, the only real hope we have of getting the type of government we want and need.

Most of us don't have enough money to influence things so unless we band together with our donations and our votes, we go backward.

I no longer have any patience for anyone who wants change but won't get off his or her bottom to go out and vote for change. I am getting angry, not just at the self-absorbed politicians who might favor corporations and large contributors, but am also getting very angry at self-absorbed voters who simply won't make the effort to vote in local, state or national elections unless there ii is a Presidential election year.

Anyone else tired of this crap? Sorry to use profanity, but honestly, I am fed up. I cannot listen to people gripe about their plight when they won't bother to vote. - Ks Sunflower

There is too much wasted time with mob mentality preventing possible "productive results or solutions"

  6. As most folks who actually know her can attest, Martha Coakley is not a dimwit or lacking in charisma. Do not believe what the teabaggers tell you on those two points. Coakley is no s'error palin.

If her campaign has performed poorly, it is because of the idiots who are running her campaign. The same thing happened to her once before. But she did not learn her lesson, and it is because of that unlearned lesson that MA is where it is now.

Coakley is a good candidate and she will do a good job as Kennedy's replacement. She is not just a vote on healthcare.

Scott Brown on the other hand... he's truly representative of his followers.

  11. I cannot believe that the Democratic Party in MA has been so blind or as someone just said on MSNBC "asleep at the switch". This is total insanity that Coakley was so complacent that she thought just because she was a Democrat she didn't have to do anything to secure Senator Kennedy's seat. I know the voters in MA are pissed off but I hope they do not just sit this one out to prove a point. This makes me sick, sick, sick. I too, hope the people in Massachusetts do indeed follow Alaska and stop the tactics of Palin, Brown and Rethuglicans.

  13. I used to live in Mass and happened to be there this weekend so I can share some interesting tidbits about this election.

First, if Coakley is the best that the Mass Dems can do, obviously they need to regroup after depending on the Kennedy powerhouse for so long. If Brown is elected, it will ultimately create a strong reaction and the pendulum will likely shift in a big way the next time around. Furthermore, following Alaskan's lead in unmasking SP, I bet the good folks of Mass. will keep a fire under Mr. Brown.

Second, in addition to the above mischief described in Gryphen's post-- there is more. The ballot will have a third party candidate who's name is..... Kennedy and is NO relationship to THE Kennedys of Mass. So this has Rove/Cheney-type operation written all over it. It's clearly a tactic to draw confused voters away from Coakley.

Massachusetts is a wonderful place, it will be very interesting to watch how this all comes out.

  14. I live in Ma and voted for Coakley. I can not believe how short people's memories are. 8 years of hell, we expect President Obama to fix it all in one year, and then to dare vote a person that has ties to tea parties makes me ill.

I advocated for President Obama. Made phone calls held signs. If the people of Ma do this after how hard Ted Kenndedy fought for us I don't know what to say.

I know the trolls are on a diet here but no matter what happens today. Palin will never be President.I still think people are not that insane. Even Faux will be rid of her soon. So the laugh is on your trolls.

Don't forget that MA is the same state that relected Mr. Magic Underpants as governor, too, also.

I think some voters (and yes, there are uninformed ones everywhere) might think Scott Brown is Kennedyesque, unfortunately. Not quite the bloodline, of course, but because the RW is so hypocritical, the Cosmo spread won't hurt him at all--he's a Republican, y'all!

It's pretty obvious by the closeness of this race that either MA is losing its progressive base, or people are lying about being flip-floppers.

Sarah publicly endorsed Brown, so did he TeaBaggers and yet he's still going to win!! His supporters have been on FB for weeks begging for her to endorse him and begging others to work phone banks, etc. I guess those tactics are working. Makes me sick. Sick

I agree that the Dems were a bit too complacent until about a week ago. I have personally had at least a dozen robocalls plus numerous in person calls. Many of us are trying very hard to make sure Brown doesn't win...that would be a travesty.

I just read an opinion piece by Kevin Cullen for the Boston Globe.[http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2010/01/19/for_coakley_ominous_sign/ by Kevin Cullen]

It was interesting, but the real emphasis should be on reading the comments posted about it. At present there are almost 300 comments - most of them full of anger and vitriole towards the paper, the author, liberals, Democrats, et cetera.

It was amazing how many comments were empty - with the explanation that the comment had been removed. That's how much creepy stuff is out there ready to burst.

This is the legacy of the Rove-Bush-Cheney years with the extra push by Beck-Limbaugh-Palin and other Faux News Xperts: hate, raging, unthinking hate.

We cannot sit back and let this movement get any larger or we might as well give up. To me, these folks represent more of a threat to the America I love than any Islamic extremists. Our home-grown, white, bigoted ultra-conservatives will destroy our country from within if we don't keep standing up against them.

It is so discouraging and exhausting to keep trying to keep sanity and civility as a part of our country's culture but it is necessary between the fanatics and the apathetic. We may be our own last hope.

Amazing how many trolls are out in force today on all sites--no wonder the GOP coffers are running low! ;-) They've also been calling progressive radio shows--yet again--with scripted comments (you can tell by the way the nervous callers are reciting them). Fortunately, the hosts are picking up on it immediately. All to discourage Dems from going to the polls in MA. I'm still holding out hope that few are buying into this barrage of misinformation, theatrics and hysteria--the turnout has been much better than expected, so we'll see.

Also (too) the race may not be over tonight or even tomorrow as the bulk of the voting machines being used are supposedly hackable, and there are some questionable tactics being reported (refer to the commenter above). Perhaps this window will allow the HC bill to be pushed through.

And, as someone else mentioned above, Pres O is STILL in the WH and will be, no matter the outcome in Massachusetts. IMO, this race is just doing more to expose the GOP machine for the childish, malevolent--and monied--operation it is. Despite all the hype, I think this is slowly starting to sink in, judging from the people I've spoken to this past weekend (in rural PA, believe it or not). And, BTW Sarah--them's I spoke to DON'T LIKE YOU. AT ALL.

And many, many thanks for the generous invitation to move to Canada! You guys up North must be shaking your heads in disbelief over all this.

Onething, MA has excellent health care, but Expensive. Everyone here wantsto see a world-famous specialist at one of our many outstanding academic medical centers. The state is working on the next step inuniversal care, bundling paymentsto control costs.

People who earn above a certainincome do have to pay a small penalty if they choose not to carry insurance. The whole premise of insurance is that it is leastexpensive when everyone carries it. For those of us lucky enough to have insurance, there was nochange withthe law.
