Sarah Palin has Canadian bootlegger grandparents? WTF?

So Palin gave this speech in Hamilton, Ontario last night.

You know most of it was the same happy mooseshit that she always shovels out to the morons ignorant enough to actually pay to hear her mangle the English language.  But then she mentioned something that has all of us who have been following the Palin trainwreck a little puzzled.

From the spec.com:

As she swept into Hamilton last night with her entourage and adoring fans and lonely protesters and press pack, it was abundantly clear that the former Alaska governor and one-time Republican vice-presidential candidate has transcended politics to become the ultimate American powerhouse: a full-fledged celebrity.

And it is that status, more than anything, that drew 900 posh people to Carmen's Banquet Centre to hear Palin speak for more than 45 minutes about her family. From her bootlegger grandfathers in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, to the five children we know so much about.

WTF?  I have not only read that literary abortion "Going Rogue" (Fight the memories Gryphen, fight the memories!) but also the only nominally better written "Trailblazer", and NOWHERE in those two books, or anywhere else that I know of  for that matter, is their any mention of members of the Heath family selling illegal booze.

My first instinct is just to assume that Palin is tailor making yet another lie to impress the audience that she is speaking in front of. (Remember the two versions of her brother's burned foot?) But then again I am not sure that this is not some long buried family scandal that she carelessly exposed to media scrutiny.

Look I don't have any problem believing that there are lawbreakers in Palin's family, I just don't know why "little miss holier than thou" would brag about that to an audience of high rolling Canadians?  Was this a group who made the majority of their money selling moonshine to the natives?  (Hey maybe one of the members of her audience was Charles Bronfman?  "What can you say about Charles except that he’s the Son of Sam — Sam Bronfman, that is, the prohibition bootlegger who took over the Seagram liquor business and turned its key booze labels into worldwide best sellers.") Maybe she was trying to impress them with some Canadian connection and did not really understand "what is it exactly that the bootlegger does every day?"

However according to this site that researched her ancestry, Sarah's grandparents have been American citizens going back to 1832 where it shows her great-great granfather, a  Francis H. Oriel, as  having been born in Canada.  Is this the man that Sarah identifies as a "bootlegger"?  Is he the one whose genes encourage Palin to bend the rules and scoff at the law until forced to comply?

Well as of right now I am not sure where the truth lies.  Is Sarah Palin really the decendant of a criminal Canadian bootlegger, or is she just the most blatant chronic liar in American political history?

On this issue your guess is as good as mine, but if you find any new information please let me know, I have to admit I am a little curious.

Update:  Andrew Sullivan may have solved the mystery.  Well some of it anyhow.

  1. My vote goes to chronic liar.

    Without referring to her grandparents as bootleggers and Canadian, she doesn't have a way to bring up Bronfman and Seagrams.

    Why bring it up? This was probably some research she did for her wine and cheese gig and couldn't fit it in because of the Canadian angle. So she saved it for a Canadian audience.

    Any Canadian audience.

    The way the Heaths and Palins breed, she COULD have any number of sets of grandparents.

    You gotta remember that, in addition to Bristol, Palin herself and her mom were with child when the former "eloped" to save money (just another lie) and the latter got married in a Catholic Church (a big sin, at least back then).

    Palin family values means they get to have all the sex they want but, golly, no one else should because, golly, it's just wrong.

    I don't have much time here - did not read any of the links. Sorry.

    However: There might be a very simple(minded) explanation of her use of the word 'BOOTLEGGER', because she does not really have much grasp of the English language: She might not actually know what the word means and actually meant to say something totally different, like maybe 'squatter', or 'pioneer'...

    BTW, Saskatchewan and Alberta ate thousands of miles from Hamilton. It's a little like bragging about her wild west ancestors while giving a speech in Erie, PA. You can't see Alberta from Hamilton.

    She stated that her imaginary "grandfathers" were from Saskatchewan and Alberta. The only Canadian relative she had was her great-great-grandfather who was from Ontario (NOT Sask or Alb) and who later moved to Illinois.

    Both of the provinces she claimed are to the left of the center of Canada. Ontario (where the great-great-grandfather was actually from) is one province more to the right. They're not easy to mix up!

    It's odd that she wouldn't use the "Ontario" reference since that is where she was standing while she was speaking. That would add to her goal of ingratiating herself with the audience by telling tales that show that she's just like them.

  15. Poo on details and facts like actual ancestry records. It’s just being picky to expect Sarah to distinguish between a grandfather and a great-great-grandfather or to care how many of them were born in Canada or that the one who was a Canadian died in 1916 before prohibition (1920-1933) started. The important thing is she’s building her mythic image and CONNECTING. And she got to show off that she can pronounce Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

    Heck, who even knows what she said? Reading the speech transcript, she didn’t specify that it was her grandfathers who were the bootleggers and she even qualified the word ‘bootlegger’ with an ‘I guess’.

    “Relatives from Canada, too. We have the foundation of the Palin family, one grandfather was born in Manitoba, this was a farming family there. And then another one born in Saskatchewan and we were some pretty funny stories of our relations who were bootleggers I guess.”

Will he and his siblings fly to join Sarah and Todd for the big milestone? Will they all go to Anchorage where they say he now lives? Will they meet in Canada? I am anxious to see them all come together for that precious boy. A family united to rejoice their blessing. Family values in action.

  17. The first group of Highland colonists arrived at Red River in the Canadian Northwest on August 29, 1812, to establish a settlement. The colony was the vision of Thomas Douglas, Fifth Earl of Selkirk, who was concerned about the conditions in which many of the poor in Britain were forced to live and who saw emigration schemes as a way to provide a better life.

    The Province of Alberta was born on September 1, 1905, when the Alberta Act came into effect. George Hedley Vicars Bulyea was appointed the first Lieutenant-Governor of the new province.

    My family BOTH sides are pioneers from the Territory now known as Alberta.

    Some of them continue to farm century old homesteads!!

    There WAS no prohibition in 1812, as you can see Alberta was not a province until 1905, able to pass prohibition laws.

    Fort Calgary was not established until 1875, which introduced the North West Mounted Police as they expanded their area.

    In 1812 Saskatchewan and Alberta were had not yet evolved into the territories they were before they became provinces, they were an area called..."Rupet's Land". That included what is now parts of Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

    Later it became "The North West Territories"

    There were only 3 of what we now call provinces, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

    There was still Upper and Lower Canada for Pete's sakes!

    My vote is for pathological liar.

    Why isn't Todd seeking help for her? We assume he loves her. Is money more important than her mental health?

    He needs to convince her to take some time off. She is hurting her own brand. The more people see her, hear her, and think about her, the less popular she is amongst the majority of people

    There will always be folks willing to plunk down money to see the freak show. But these days, most of us have found within ourselves the compassion to help the "freaks," not keep putting them on display.

    Sarah needs counseling - not about how to be a celebrity or make more money - she needs psychological counseling and therapy. If Todd really loves her and is not too far gone himself, he will make sure she gets the help she needs.

    Amassing a fortune is not worth it if you lose your mental, emotional and physical health along the way. Look at all the talented celebrities who have been broken on that same path.

    Sarah, honestly, take a break. Get some rest. Spend time with you children. Talk to someone who can help you. Relax. You are getting too tightly-wound and are going to break.

  19. Part 3:

    There are enough web sites at a 10 second Google click to concur that
    the ONLY prohibition in 1812 was .a temporary war measure.

    The Temperance was not put in place until ...1875 ......and was voluntary.

    So unless Palin's ancestors were involved in the war of 1812 by distilling or providing alcohol to the "privateers" .... or they would have to be "privateers" themselves....in essence....pirates....as usual if her lips are moving, Palin is lying.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Privateers, or Pirates:
    A bit of history first.
    It can be said that the first criminal organizations in what is now Canada were pirates who operated off the Atlantic coast, using Newfoundland as a base during the 17th and 18th centuries.
    Pirates first targeted fishing vessels operating off the Grand Banks and in subsequent years sailed to the British colony to repair, pick up supplies and conscript seamen.
    Soon Newfoundland’s main draw for pirates was as a staging area for excursions into the more profitable waters of the Caribbean and South America.
    During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Nova Scotia produced some of the most successful war-time privateers in the world.
    Privateers were essentially pirates who were issued licences by the government of their country to rob merchant ships from enemy countries in times of conflict.
    During the War of 1812, it was the privateers who were the principal line of defence that prevented the Maritimes from becoming the property of America.
  20. Part 2
    Prohibition in Canada
    [This text was published in 1948; for the full citation, see the end of the document]
    Prohibition. The first Canadian prohibition of the sale of intoxicating liquors took place during the War of 1812, when an Act was passed, as a .....temporary war measure,..... to prohibit the exportation of grain and to restrain the distillation of spirituous liquors from grain.
    A local-option measure known as the Canada Temperance Act was passed in 1878, prohibiting the sale of intoxicating liquors in places that should adopt it.
    In subsequent years a number of counties and municipalities throughout Canada put the law into force, but the greatest advance in prohibition was made after the outbreak of the World War.
    In 1915 Saskatchewan closed every bar in the province and greatly reduced the number of dispensaries.
    A referendum of the people was taken at the latter end of 1916, and as a result the remaining liquor dispensaries were voted out of existence by a majority of seven to one. On June 1, 1916, prohibition became effective in Manitoba ; and in July of the same year Alberta voted for prohibition.
    In September a referendum was taken in British Columbia and prohibition won; in 1920 the question was recommitted to the people, and defeated.
    After this, liquor was sold under government supervision, in sealed packages.
    A legislative enactment declared for prohibition in Ontario in the year 1916.
    Thus by 1921 every province except Quebec and British Columbia had declared for prohibition.
    Later, all except Prince Edward Island returned to government control. Under Parts I and II of the Canada Temperance Act, provision is made for the prohibition of the sale of intoxicating liquors in counties and cities.
    A vote taken under these parts in the county of Compton, Quebec, in 1930, in response to a petition for the repeal of the Act in that county, resulted in favour of the repeal, which immediately became effective.
    Part III of the Act relates to penalties and persecutions, Part IV to the prohibition of the importation and exportation of intoxicating liquors into and from the provinces, while Part V. enacts provisions in aid of provincial legislation for the control of the liquor traffic.
    It is frequently known as the "Scott Act", from the fact that it was sponsored by Sir Richard Scott.
    And did she drop a new version of the 5th pregnancy tailored for the Canadians?
    It doesn't matter.
    There WAS no "Alberta" "Manitoba" OR "Saskatchewan" in 1862, the year Palin's family claims to become American.
    It was ALL "Rupert's Land"
    Here is a boundary map:
    http://www.historicalatlas.ca/website/hacolp/national_perspectives/boundaries/UNIT_17/UNIT_17_Terr_Evol_6799/UNIT_17_frame_TE6799.htm
    The ONLY prohibition prior to 1862 when the claim to American citizen ship began for the Palin's, was in 1812 during the war.
    It was temporary.
    They would have had to have been pirates, because there was no such thing as bootleggers then!
    Palin is FULL of it.
    A check with some southwest Manitobans monitoring genealogical records shows that it’s Todd Palin, Sarah’s husband, who has the roots in this province. Brad Coe, a history buff in Hartney, said Todd’s grandfather Frederick William Palin was born in the town in February 1905 before eventually living with his parents and seven siblings in the Rural Municipality of Grey, in the area of Elm Creek and St. Claude.
    Frederick Palin later moved to Washington state, where his son James — Todd’s father — was born. Todd Palin was born in 1964 in Dillingham, Alaska.
    And hanging out with those Italian immigrants "all named Tony" in Ontario? Oh dear.
    Come on, expensive marketing/PR consultants, you can do better than this, can'tcha? You all aren't very good at what you do, are you? When one looks for a connection with one's audience, it should at least be truthful. One really shouldn't invent a literal connection. In Mrs. Palin's line of work, a philosophical connection would be most effective. Key to political stuff, I think.
    So in the past few weeks, she has stated directly that she's "spent a lotta time" in Boston and Canada, with "kids' hockey".
    When, exactly, Sarah?
    Was that when you were the mayor of Wasilla (96-2002)? Track would have been 8 to 13, you would have had 2 younger children as well,and an absent husband with an Iron Dog commitment. Or was it later, 2002-2006, when you were running for Lt. Gov, worked the Oil & Gas Commission, and campaigned for governor, had another kid and drove around the state in your Jetta with children sleeping in the backseat?
    Track would have been a Bantam and then in high school. But in 2005, you were kinda busy and he was in trouble at school. And in 2006, he was living in Michigan and got sent home. But remember, in 2007 he was "offered" a spot playing semi-pro hockey for the Alaska Avalanche, but instead he joined the army?
    So when did you spend a lotta time in Boston and Canada?
    "It seems as unlikely as an Alaska woman becoming the U.S. vice-president. Sarah Palin with family roots in rural southern Manitoba? You betcha!
    Word is getting around Hartney, a small town about 80 km southwest of Brandon, that Palin — a major figure in the U.S. political scene who boasts plenty of star power — has family connections, through marriage, to the Manitoba community.
    And Hartney’s mayor plans to invite the 46-year-old former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican nominee for U.S. vice-president to the town for a sort of homecoming.
    Palin added, as well, that her family has “some pretty funny stories of our relatives who were bootleggers” in Manitoba and Saskatchewan many decades ago."
