Fareed Zakharia asks the question "Why are we fighting in Afghanistan?" I think it is a question that deserves an answer.
Did anybody find anything wrong with Mr. Zakaria's logic?
Neither did I.
But I think I know the answer to his question. The reason that we remain killing and dying in Afghanistan, even though there really is no valid reason to continue killing and dying, is because of politics.
Because President Obama and the Democrats know full well that the Republicans are waiting with drool dripping from their slathering maws for the moment when Obama has to announce that we can no longer justify fighting that war. One nano-second after he does that the GOP will pounce.
"We were winning that war until President Obama took office, and now look!" They will say.
"We knew the Democrats would cut and run once they took power!" They will complain.
"Just like we said, the Dems are soft on terror and cannot keep America safe!" Yhey will boast.
They will throw everything they can think of at Obama, and damn him to hell for making the only decision that will ultimately be left to him. How, and when we bring our troops home from Afghanistan.
He cannot wait until we win, for there is no clear victory to be had. He cannot wait until they elect an honest leader because the country is too corrupt to produce one. He can do nothing except wait until his second term and do what he, and every Democrat, know will virtually ensure a GOP victory in 2018.
This is the trap that Dick Cheney and Karl Rove set for the Democratic President they knew was coming after eight disastrous years of Republican control, and it is working perfectly.
Even the so-called anti-big government Teabaggers dare not question the incredible amount of money we continue to spend on the two wars we are currently fighting. And to make sure that subject will not be broached the Republicans have recruited Sarah Palin to walk the Baggers back from throwing military spending onto the pile of government programs they want cut because they believe they are draining this country's resources.
Check out some of these statements from Palin's recent Facebook post.
Something has to be done urgently to stop the out of control Obama-Reid-Pelosi spending machine, and no government agency should be immune from budget scrutiny. We must make sure, however, that we do nothing to undermine the effectiveness of our military.
When President Obama came into office, he inherited a military that was winning in Iraq. He inherited loyal allies and strong alliances. And thanks to the lamestream media pawing and purring over him, he had the benefit of unparalleled global popularity. What an advantage! So their basic foreign policy outlines should have been clear. Commit to the War on Terror. Commit to winning – not ending, but winning the war in Afghanistan.
It is in America’s and the world’s best interests for our country to remain the dominant military superpower, but under President Obama’s leadership that dominance may be slipping away. It’s the result of an agenda that reeks of complacency and defeatism.
Of course not one word of that was actually written by Sarah Palin. But she was recruited to put her hoofprint on the post and claim it as her own. And she will gladly stand before Bowling conventions and Teabagger friendly political rallies and spew the talking points contained within without really understanding a single word of them, but believing in their inherent rightness just like the good little Pentecostal she was raised to be. (She does not understand the bible either, but GOD DAMN IT she believes every word written on its blessed pages. King James version only of course.)
So WHY are we in Afghanistan? Because there is no way out for the President without committing political Hara Kiri. That is why.
And there will continue to be no escape for him until the American people finally stand up and demand an end to that war. But how can they when they are too busy being fed misinformation by Fox News, and allowing themselves to be frightened into spending all of their savings purchasing overpriced gold to head off the coming financial collapse? Sadly the majority of Americans seem more content with hearing a never ending stream of lies issuing forth from the lacquered lips of the Fox News bimbettes than to hear the unvarnished truth coming from the always professional Rachel Maddow.
Of course, if the Teabaggers were actually the honest "anti-big government" organization they claim to be, THEY would be the ones standing on the streets demanding that we bring our troops home, and insisiting that we stop sending trillions of dollars overseas to be wasted on unnecessary military actions or stolen by corrupt Afghanistan government officials. But honesty is simply NOT a virtue of this particular movement, as demonstrated brilliantly by Bill Maher way back in March of this year.

I believe the word is "hara kiri" (ritual suicide by disembowelment with a sword, formerly practiced in Japan by samurai as an honorable alternative to disgrace or execution) not "hari kari", but otherwise I agree with your premise.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is bigger than that with the "discovery" of one trillion dollars worth of valuable minerals in the hills of Afghanistan. Our involvement there will not end any time soon.
Military involvement in Afghanistan has meant the end of many empires (see Alexander the Great, Great Britain, USSR, and several others) The Great Game is played out in the dusty mountains of the Hindu Kush, and can only lead to failure for those foolish enough to attempt to vanquish the "Unconquered Nation".
Thanks. I fixed it.
ReplyDeleteeven if every single American barricades the white house, screaming they won't leave until he pulls out, if Obama does listen and pull out, I wager he will be killed - by someone, some money grubbing dumbass. THAT is what this country has been built on. War and Money. Someone needs to make the ultimate sacrifice and pull ALL troops. If countless voluntary soldiers are willing to die, why not the President? Thats the leader we need.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope General Petraus (sp?) can save the day, and Rachel Maddow has some good reporting.
ReplyDeleteThank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!! This is so vital!!

ReplyDeleteThat is the best the repubs could get? Scarah doesn't give a rip about soldiers or Afghanistan. Her daughter's best friend is an example, did she care to address those important issues hitting close to her own family and home? She did not as much as tweet to the boys at war on the Fourth. She is out of touch.
How are they going to spin her callous treatment of the people that actually put their lives on the line to fight? It is obvious she doesn't write the crap in the SarahPac notes, but she allows her name to be used. One minute she has a manifesto and the next she is gone. Weird things when it comes to Scarah and the military I tell you. Wait until we learn the real story about Track Palin. Is he still doing photo surveillance?
Somebody named Barack Obama said this in August 2007:
ReplyDeleteIt is time to turn the page. When I am President, we will wage the war that has to be won, with a comprehensive strategy with five elements: getting out of Iraq and on to the right battlefield in Afghanistan and Pakistan; developing the capabilities and partnerships we need to take out the terrorists and the world's most deadly weapons; engaging the world to dry up support for terror and extremism; restoring our values; and securing a more resilient homeland.
The first step must be getting off the wrong battlefield in Iraq, and taking the fight to the terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
I introduced a plan in January that would have already started bringing our troops out of Iraq, with a goal of removing all combat brigades by March 31, 2008. If the President continues to veto this plan, then ending this war will be my first priority when I take office.

There are many folks, like me, in the U.S. that are not pro war and the cost of it which is putting the U.S. into some of the financial problems we are experiencing as to the deficit! Who cares what the Republicans say if we were to pull out of Afghanistan? Palin doesn't know what she is talking about on her Facebook, so who could even give a s--- as to what she supposedly says?
ReplyDeleteWhy does the USA think we can win, when war has been going on for eons over there? I'm sure there are things going on that President Obama found out once he attained the office for which he had no clue while campaigning.
What a horrid job our President has taken on. (Who would really want it?) I absolutely detest the hate and negative that is pushed his way constantly. He is doing a wonderful job in spite of everything. Bless him!
With our education system failing at an ever increasing rate and jobs being hard to find, without these two wars where would some of these kids find work? The military, and the Iraq and Afghan wars are a dumping ground for a new generation of young men and women that have no other job prospects.
ReplyDeleteThe military duty will leave them mentally and physically scarred and the Veteran's Administration will never give them proper care once they have served their terms. We'll have another generation of "walking wounded" just like Vietnam.
We could take those billions spent on these two wars and build a stronger America. Instead we have chosen to fight a losing battle and scar a percentage of America's young people that could have been better served by having an opportunity to have a Pell Grant, attend college and have a real career, rather than being fresh meat for the war machine.
Pathetic. No child of mine would be allowed to go anywhere near this military, not to raise money for college, not to earn a paycheck. These wars are wrong, wrong, wrong, and they are killing our country and our young people.
It's no coincidence that the military has been involved in creating war simulation video games that these kids play as adolescents. They become indoctrinated at an early age and think it's all fun and games. They are pawns. They will only realize this once they have PTSD or lose and limb and they almighty great America won't stand by them in the same manner it did when they enlisted.
Cause Canada can't supply 10 million barrels a day and the US needs to maintain control over the ME to ensure affordable oil?
ReplyDeleteNaww, got to be to save little girls from the Burka and to send them to school. And to teach them to love american t.v. sets.
I agree with all you say. I also think that we are there because lots of people are making lots of money off this war. Have you ever wondered why our Government won't reduce our Defense Budget (which is 58% of discretionary spending)? The war machine has bought off and infiltrated our government via lobbyists and campaign finance.
ReplyDeleteWhy would they cut spending and stop the war? The same reason Congress won't pass laws on campaign finance and term limits. It will put them out of business.
We need campaign finance reform (NOW!) and term limits (NOW!). I don't know how it can happen, but it really needs to happen.
Just watched secret life interview. Yeah, Levi's being used again. "CoParenting?" That word has Sarah written all over it. it's a family affair. September will be here soon. November soon follows Sept and a book penned by Mr Playboy, though it will be ridiculed by all but blogging morons, is something feared by Sarah.
ReplyDeleteWhere has she said that she only believes in the King James version? Please link it for me. If that's true --- she's involved in even more of a specific cult than I ever realized.
ReplyDeleteI thought we were in Afghanistan because 15 of the 19 9/11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. The question should be why did we invade Afghanistan in 2001? As I recall, no one could question the Bush administration back then. The media and many liberals were hawkish about war in 2001. Remember all the embedding that was going on. I wonder what Zakaria thought back then? I didn't support the war then and I don't support it now, but it's not going to end anytime soon. So why are Americans suddenly pacifists? Americans wanted war. They wanted to fight them over there so we wouldn't have to fight them over here. Well, guess what. You wanted war. You got it.
