Okay this "terror babies" lunacy is spreading like wildfire through Texas right now. I wonder when Palin will catch the bug?

I know I made fun of Texas the last time one of these nutjobs was on Anderson Cooper, but now I just feel really bad for all of you who have to live there.

And this is why my husband and I are looking for a new state this October. Even in a large, fairly liberal city like Houston you are not immune to the crazy. I hang my head in shame every time this crap happens.

First of all his bio is a must read, because of the powerful positions he has held before he became a congressman, his ridiculous behavior and other lunatic ideas he holds AS a congressman.
Gohmert was born in Pittsburg, Texas. He received his B.A. from Texas A&M University in 1975. At A&M, he was a Brigade Commander of the Corps of Cadets.
He later received his Juris Doctor from Baylor University in Waco in 1977. Gohmert served in the United States Army Judge Advocate General's Corps, at Fort Benning, Georgia, from 1978 to 1982.
Gohmert was elected as a state district judge for Texas's 7th Judicial District comprised of Smith County (Tyler) in 1992 and was reelected two times before being appointed by Governor Rick Perry to fill a vacancy as Chief Justice on Texas's 12th Court of Appeals, where he served from 2002 to 2003.
After Texas' 2003 mid-decade redistricting process, he successfully defeated Democratic incumbent 1st District Congressman Max Sandlin for his seat in Congress, becoming the first Republican since Reconstruction to represent the 1st District of northeast Texas.
Gohmert serves on three House committees. Because of his judicial background, he was appointed to the Judiciary Committee.
He also serves on the Committee on Resources and the Small Business Committee. He faced no major-party opposition in 2008.
On July 29, 2009, Gohmert signed on as a co-sponsor of H.R. 1503. This bill would "amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to require the principal campaign committee of a candidate for election to the office of President to include with the committee's statement of organization a copy of the candidate's birth certificate, together with such other documentation as may be necessary to establish that the candidate meets the qualifications for eligibility to the Office of President under the Constitution".

On September 9, 2009, Gohmert held in his lap signs reading:

Anderson Cooper got into a heated argument with Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert on the Thursday edition of "Anderson Cooper 360," as he repeatedly asked the Republican to provide him with proof of the actual existence of the supposed "terror baby" plot.
ReplyDeleteGohmert has been one of the most vocal proponents of the purported threat--where terrorist organizations send pregnant women into the U.S. so that their children will be American citizens who can enter and leave the country at will as they are trained to be terrorists abroad.
Cooper, who had already grilled Texas State Rep. Debbie Riddle about the same issue on Wednesday, showed Gohmert footage of an interview with a former FBI agent saying that there was no credible evidence that such a plot had ever existed. He then asked Gohmert if he had actually talked to the FBI before making his inflammatory claims.
Gohmert started yelling right away, saying that he had done research on the plot. Then the two really got into it:
COOPER: What research? Can you tell us about the research?
GOHMERT: You are attacking the messenger, Anderson, you are better than this. You used to be good. You used to find that there was a problem and you would go after it.
COOPER: Sir, I am asking you for evidence of something that you said on the floor of the House.
GOHMERT: I did, and you listen, this is a problem. If you would spend as much time looking into the problem as you would have been trying to come after me and belittle me this week --
COOPER: Sir, do you want to offer any evidence? I'm giving you an opportunity to say what research and evidence you have. You've offered none, other than yelling.
Later in the interview, Cooper chastised Gohmert for "going on to the House floor and spreading scare stories...this is a theory you are propagating that you have no evidence for."

I think that the reason these folks get so flustered when asked for proof is that they themselves never require it. They believe in 'received truth.' If some authority figure says it's true, that's good enough for them and should be good enough for everyone else, too. It's a pathological side-effect of fundamental religious training.

ReplyDeleteIt should be obvious they hate the Constitution, except maybe the 2nd amendment which I personally think has been misinterpreted by the courts. After all, we have official militias now called the National Guard; we have a standing Army, Navy,etc, and federal, local and state law enforcement. It is a well known dictum that you do not "take the law into your own hands". Vigilantism is against the law, so is treason and plotting against the govt to overthrow it.
We may live in imperialistic times, but certainly not colonial ones.
I really do want to know what Mercede thinks about this problem also. Wisdom from the Valley is always welcomed.

Sarah Palin has an anchor baby, and his name is Trig. It doesn't matter who gave birth to Trig, now Sarah claims him as her son. He is the anchor for her "right to life" beliefs and the Religious Right. As long as he was light weight and portable, she used him as her political and religious prop. I have seen pictures of Sarah attending a horse race, tearing down someone's expression of freedom of speech, or reading talking points at Fox News. The last time that I saw a photo os Sarah attending church, she and her family went to inspect the arson damage to her church in 2008.

At first, I was completely distracted by her freaky teeth. Then I started listening. This lady is crazy, but luckily Anderson Cooper made her look like the total fool she is. They didn't tell her she would be grilled on her info? Sorry, sweetie, only Sarah Palin gets to go on TV and spout inflammatory lies without question. Why don't more people do this to Sarah Palin? ReplyDeleteI was born in Lubbock, moved away soon after but have many many relatives in Texas. These are smart college educated folks and to a person they believe this lunacy. Don't think for a minute Texans don't go for this. My relatives' racism is so bad I don't ever go back.

I had to look up Debbie Riddle's Wiki entry to realise that she was a TEXAS state legislator, not a US Congresswomen. It really wasn't made clear in either the news segment or your column. I don't know if that makes the madness any more acceptable, but at least it's at a state level, in this case. I wouldn't be suprised if MOST of the Republican members of the Texas state legislature believe this bull shit.

Something in the back of my mind tells me that the ex-FBI person might have been talking about "play acting scenarios" role playing...I'd have loved to have seen that one. Well, in this case the "what if" has made Texas look like a huge goober. I saw Anderson talking with the lady that night and she was miffed not being prepared to back up her statements. No more mister nice guy Anderson I say!
