So Arizona Governor, and debate champion, Jan Brewer was SO upset with her how she came off in her last debate that she has absolutely refused to participate in any more.
Gov. Jan Brewer (R) has put the kibosh on all future debates with her Arizona gubernatorial opponent Terry Goddard (D), after her rather embarrassing display at Wednesday's debate. "I don't believe that things come out in proper context in an adversarial atmosphere," she defended herself.
According to the Arizona Daily Star, Brewer says she only partook in the debate to try qualify for the $1.7 million-plus public funds for her campaign.
So after her poor showing, which involved a flubbed opening statement that made the internet rounds yesterday, Brewer has had enough: "I think it's pretty defined what [Goddard] stands for and what I stand for."
So she only participated in the first debate so that she could get her hands on the 1.7 million, and now that she has the money in her tight little fist she is taking her ball and running home? I swear these Teabaggers will not do a damn thing without somebody waving a wad of cash in front of their nose first!
It is way past time for journalists and the voters to start demanding that these candidates start acting like serious candidates.
I for one want our two candidates for the Senate to have a half dozen debates at least. I want to KNOW who can take the heat, and who goes running off to their Teabagging surrogate mommy.
Palin showed the way...why answer pesky questions and be accountable if you can be relevant from behind facebook and twitter.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, these shenanigans are the new "normal", if the media is to be believed. Heard something yesterday in which a commentator made a broad statement that (paraphrasing here) the "public" no longer seems to care about debating or even discussing hard-hitting issues, and this kind of behavior is literally being excused by the MSM if a $$Tea Party$$ candidate is involved. They have NOTHING to bring to the table--most are empty shells simply parroting the extreme views of their masters with no real insight or solutions, so they avoid the press like the plague and then play the victim card. Cynical me thinks the Koch Boys are tossing lots of cash around, trying to protect the image of their knucklehead candidates (why do I keep thinking of Pinky and the Brain?) I DO like the way a few intrepid reporters hammered Gov. Brewer when she left the studio...hopefully, some are getting tired of being played by the Tealiban.
ReplyDeleteSarah Palin has established the template for this one way conversation with America. The media has enabled her, and the likes of Sharon Angle and Jan Brewer are attempting to make it status quo. How is this acceptable when it is our politicians who are supposed to represent, and more importantly, answer to us. If politicians expect to get elected we have to insist that they engage in discourse with us, and pressure needs to be exerted on our media to force the discussion.
ReplyDeleteEveryday Sarah Palin is allowed to remain on her platform, her relevance inflated by corporate media, her lies and manipulations unchallenged, is another day of damage done to America.
I have never hated anyone in my entire life, but I am coming close to hating her. Ultimately, her ability to ignite intolerance and hatred is the greatest risk she poses, IMO, to Americans.
Queen tut-tut could use a bit more rouge and a less jarring wig.
ReplyDeleteShe'd make a great horror movie star!
ReplyDeleteI wonder where the annointed Mama Grizzly candidates got the notion they do not need to answer to anyone. Isn't this ironic a distinguished Mama Grizzly is anti an "adversarial" situation which is actually a fair forum for each person to debate their position and present a convincing case? So much for being a fierce mama grizzly. This is the end of accountability, transparency, demonstration of ability, comprehension, interviews and debates to demonstrate competency.
ReplyDeleteWhat? No "cajones?" If a candidate packs up her tent, retreats from a personal poor performance what will she do during real crisis and conditions put to the test?
There is inherent and predictable danger and disservice to our country to allow politicins to hide, retreat from rational and intelligent discourse via FB and twitter or occasional talking points on television refusing to answer questions. This provides conditions for anyone to impersonate or put their name to other's work, missives, to be in "retreat" from challenges and hide out in a bunker of safety of FB scud misseling their enemies "reloading" their assault weapons to destroy, gun down their competition and assassinate their target unchallenged of their compulsive lies. It is predatory behavior. It is what the weak due, spineless, fear, hate mongering, divisive abuse tactics.
Perhaps the public and journalists may need to ignore the cowardly and false means to gain power and draw the attackers out into the open in fair competition for scrutiny and evaluation.
She's as scary to look at,as she is to listen to. I agree that it is way past time for the MSM to do their job, when it comes to intransigent candidates. They should hound them no end and eviscerate them in the press. Let's start with Palin.
ReplyDeleteGosh, that women is hard to look at. Not because she is old and wrinkled, but because clearly her soul is all you see in her eyes and on her face. Mean........a lifetime of mean, and I don't know a thing about her--shame on me for judging the book by its' cover. Her recent behavior, though, basically sums it up.
ReplyDeleteOMG that woman is scary to look at and even scarier when she opens her mouth (and nothing comes out!)
ReplyDeleteFunny, every job I've ever gotten, I've had to have at least one interview. I consider the debates an interview for those looking to represent the people.
ReplyDeleteWill future job interviews only be conducted via one way Fakebook/Twitter puffery? It only seems fair if pols are allowed to get away with this type of nonsense. If that becomes the new normal, I'm screwed, I don't do Fakebook or Twitter.
...and she'll probably STILL get re-elected.
ReplyDeleteThis is the new normal. Just elect people that can memorize talking points and snarky comments. Why bother with a candidate with intellect who will serve their constituents well?
This is for any political race where debates are involved.
ReplyDeleteOrganizers: set up a place, with name placard, for everyone running for the position. When one doesn't show up, then place a life-sized cutout of the MIA candidate and a sign saying why (refused to debate, not worth my time, whatever).
Let those watching the debate draw their own conclusion as to why some one chickened out (without any valid reason, such as a death in the family).
Do this enough times across the USA - no one will want to miss a debate due to shame and/or more questioning on why he/she didn't feel it was worth the time.
JMO...
When did Bernadette move out of Alice Springs to Arizona?
ReplyDeleteWatch the lady squirm and lie AGAIN! "IF" I said that? Lady, YOU DID!
ReplyDeleteJan Brewer Finally Backpedals:
I Was Wrong About Headless Bodies In the Desert in Arizona
"That was an error, if I said that," Brewer told the Associated Press yesterday. "I misspoke, but you know, let me be clear, I am concerned about the border region because it continues to be reported in Mexico that there's a lot of violence going on and we don't want that going into Arizona."
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/09/brewer-finally-backpedals-i-was-wrong-about-headless-bodies.php?ref=fpa
Hmmm, that's kind of insulting to Bernadette actually. She had some depth.
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly what I was afraid of when the MSM let Palin get away with selective interaction. Now we'll have a whole crop of bozos running for office based on Tweets. If the majority of the public accepts this, and poll results for November showing a probable landslide for Republicans suggests that they do, than we will sadly end up with the country we deserve.
ReplyDeleteRegarding her performance last night, she said she lost her head. I presume we'll find it in the Arizona desert.
ReplyDelete"Beheadings, beheadings, beheadings" so says Brewer
ReplyDeletePoor Jan Brewer just doesn't get it. I live in Tucson so I've had to suffer under her horrible leadership for almost 2 years now and how this awful woman is just running Arizona into the ground is so shameful. She fell into the position because Arizona does not have a Lt. Governor so the Secretary of States takes over when the sitting governor does not complete their term. Arizona has had other "accidental" governors before (Bruce Babbitt, Rose Mofford) but none of this magnitude of incompetance. She is so clueless on how our system of politics works. She sees the debates as an advantage for Goddard because he gets to "define himself" with the voters and that's a bad thing in her limited worldview.

I'm not surprised that not answering questions is the new normal.
ReplyDeleteWhen the new normal is hiring "news" anchors who are only set accessories, what do you expect? Today's news shows are merely "the view" in disguise, with their panel of "reporters" who are chatty and giggly and are generally a composite of fake white teeth and long expanse of thin tanned legs (with good shots of the dangling shoe to please the foot fetishists). The on-the-scene "reporter" is only a set accessory in the making.
When I saw Gwen Ifll accepting Palin's non-answers, I knew we were in trouble.
Yeah, blogs are better. Maybe we should take a virtual page out of their books and ask our own questions on FB and Twitter.
Wouldn't it be great if the feeds were dominated by questions?
Lynn @ 7:13, LOL!
ReplyDeleteYep, it's totally and utterly bizarre how these candidates have just decided that they don't have to talk to the people (via the media) that they are hoping to represent??!! Never seen anything like it and I think it's about time the media make it a focus of their reporting- How can you know who you're voting for if the candidates won't debate or speak to the media? They are relying on their "fans" aka fellow teabaggers to vote for them and to hell with everyone else?
ReplyDeleteIt's a news worthy story in and of itself.
This makes me wonder about the people in AZ that would vote for her and McCain, for that matter.
ReplyDeleteShe did horribly in the debate plus used improper English!
She reminded me of someone who could have the beginnings of Alzheimers.
The electorate need to vet her prior to voting in November.
God! not to be trite and superficial here, but why it is that such a huge proportion of these crazed right winger people are dirt ugly? Tom DeLay, Dick Armey, Jan Brewer,O'Connell,Fred Thompson,Ken Mehlman,to mention only the ones at the top of my gag list.
ReplyDeleteYes, this is the new normal. The Rethugs have finally figured out that they don't do well in debates, with reporters, or with actual legislative work.
ReplyDeleteNo other news station in Arizona would have done what KPHO did. It was amazing--a small crack in the wall being built between the news media and the citizenry.
Here in Tucson, we don't get any negative news about Republicans, but we do get plenty of right wing nuttery.
As I wrote in another comment, McCain doesn't advertise his get togethers, so that he can control the image. Guess Brewer is now attempting to do the same.
In addition, she told some news service that when she heard that she was going to be asked more questions from the press about her lie, she basically became parental and decided not to play their game! How's that for dealing with the press?!
It's the wave of the future: Ignore the press, fool the mob, steal elections, take the money, retain the office.
As you can see, McCain hasn't suffered in Arizona for his poor judgments or for starving Arizonans of good representation.
This all started w/Sister Sarah and the fact she has gotten away with it (allowed by FOX mainly) these past two years. So many of these candidates are inept! (Just look at the ones AZ, AK, CO and NV for starters!)
ReplyDeleteI truly hope that people review records, old interviews, etc. of their candidates before they vote in November. Especially if that candidate is running from the press and avoiding debates. If they won't answer specific questions or participate in debates, then please don't vote for them. Plain and simple!
And, it might be a good idea for us to write specific journalists in the U.S. and request they do a better job. The real journalists of days gone by must be rolling over in their graves.
Brewer looks as though she is at least 100 y/o seeing as her botox isn't living up to its promises!
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't just her 'stone dead lack of response' to a question during the debate, but rather her refusal to answer a question posed by the press about her statement, '. . . the headless bodies found in the desert' due to the lawlessness of illegal immigrants [she prefers 'aliens' as though they are from outer space]. After looking for rescue from anyone else in the press corps and no one coming to her defense, she curtly states, 'thank you for coming' and walks! If this 'Paylin way' of handling the press is what is now considered 'acceptable' for politicians, then we have lost America because no one will know one damned thing about any candidate. We can't allow this to be considered normal behavior; we must force our media to DEMAND answers to ALL questions.
Somebody give that woman some sunblock! Nevermind... too late.
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS NOT THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE!!!
ReplyDeleteWE AMERICANS CAN STOP THIS.
We can write, email, blog the MSM until they start to ask the HARD questions and DEMAND ANSWERS. This will only be the wave of the future if we let it be.
LET'S PUT SEXISM ASIDE. If you want to hold a public office get ready for the hard questions. Because your personal life is RELEVANT when you want to have a say in MY personal life!
This woman does not want to debate or answer questions because there is probably a lot of questionable STUFF in her history. The voters in Arizona DESERVE better than this woman, if she told one HUGE LIE about beheaded dead bodies....what else HAS she lied about or will lie about in the future?
How in the hell do you "MISS SPEAK about a headless dead body??? And then blame someone else for the decline in tourism in your state. This information needs to go viral
across the nation!
How do you even try to get a job without an interview? If this is the new WAVE of the future than anyone should be able to be a Doctor, Lawyer, Teacher, Auto Mechanic JUST ON THEIR SAY SO, NO PROOF OF EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. This standard is DANGEROUS for all of America.
I am very angry as you can see.
If the MSM can call SP relevant with her rants from behind Facebook and Twitter with NO challenge and at the same time say that anonymous
bloggers who tell negative things about her cannot be believed, that is totally lopsided IMHO.
Come on LET'S WAKE UP AMERICA! We are not that dumb.
Lastly, I would like to THANK those Alaskans who DARED to speak out and tell the truth about SP.
Does Jan Brewer have Alzheimer's?
ReplyDeleteIs that woman alive?
ReplyDeleteEvery once in a while I get an email supporting the brutality of Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County who is a big supporter of Jan Brewer. Right wing nut jobs and cheer the ways in which he abuses and tortures his prisoners. They also likes Arizona's harsh prison practices. If you have the stomach for it, here is a link to an article about the torture of a female prisoner that led to her death in an Arizona prison. http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/bastard/2010/09/marcia_powells_death_unavenged.php
ReplyDeleteThis is not an isolated incident. The human rights abuses in Arizona continue.
Anon@9:02 am, Anon@8:29 am just answered your question about why pols think they do not have to answer questions for the people they hope to represent. When $paylin was allowed to not answer questions in VP debate, and got away with it, every bubble head is following her lead. I completely agree with Anon@8:29 am.
