Palin supporters believe she is a gift from God. And they mean that literally.

From Vanity Fair:

Palin seems first to have gotten the idea that she might be a new Esther shortly after being elected governor in 2006, when she asked one of her former pastors for an example of biblical leadership that she could emulate. Quoting scripture, the pastor told Palin that she, like Esther, had “come to the Kingdom for such a time as this.”

A 2008 e-mail obtained exclusively by Vanity Fair, which appears in full below (with its original spelling and punctuation), offers the clearest evidence yet made public of how seriously Palin and her advisers take this analogy. The e-mail was written by Lou Engle, a right-wing pastor and political activist who founded a movement known as the Call, which has coordinated widespread prayer and fasting to protest health-care reform and same-sex marriage. Of the latter, he has said, “What happened to California will release a spirit that is more demonic than Islam, a spirit of lawlessness and anarchy. And a sexual insanity will be unleashed into the Earth.” Engle’s e-mail was sent to Palin as a last-minute exhortation just before she took the stage for her vice-presidential debate against Joseph Biden on October 2, 2008. It is an extraordinary document, referring to legalized abortions as a “holocaust,” and casting Engle in the role of Mordecai to Palin’s Esther. The message was handled by Palin’s advisers with a gravity (subject line: “URGENT Fwd: From Lou Engle – Urgent for Sarah to read...”) that suggests it was a message they knew Palin would want to see.

"Dear Sarah,

Many thousands are fasting and praying for you. I know you’ve heard it, but I believe this is an Esther moment in your life. Esther hid her identity until Mordecai challenged her to risk everything for such a time as this. Your identity is “Sarah Barracuda”. Esther removed corruption from the Persian government and Haman fell. She didn’t have experience, she had grace and favor. Sarah, don’t hide your identity tonight. There will be questions given to you that you don’t know, and I have been weeping over you. I believe the Lord would have you be real. If they ask you a question that you don’t know, don’t be ashamed to say: “I don’t have the experience of 30 years of politics like Senator Biden, but what I have is character, truth, and integrity, and I haven’t been seduced by 30 years of political and moral compromise like these men in DC. I believe America is not looking for more knowledge, they are looking for more character and more truth, and that is who I am. I refuse the politics of neutrality. I will stand for the family, I will stand on foundations of truth and this nation will be better for it.

Sarah I’m sure you’re doing this, but take a moment to still yourself before the Lord. The Lord is a shield about you. To those who have no strength, the Lord will show Himself powerful.

Sarah, I could be wrong, but I’ve been praying for five years for an Esther, with dreams of being a Mordecai to that Esther. I believe you’re the one and I think you’re even wearing a life band. Tonight don’t be ashamed to plead for the life of the unborn and all the wounded woman who have gone through this holocaust. You can throw this email away, but I have 50 young people fasting and praying day and night who are shouting tonight: “Grace, grace to you!”

We love you,

Lou Engle"

Did reading that just give you a chill?  Good that means you are not a crazy person.  Sadly the same cannot be said for the person who actually wrote that e-mail.

I, and others, have written about this bizarre religious fervor that surrounds Sarah Palin multiple times.  And in fact this is something that has surrounded Palin even going back to the days when she was simply the mayor of Wasilla. (There is a very frightening anecdote about this very thing, that will be revealed in an upcoming book about Sarah Palin due in 2011.)

The good thing about this is that this kind of frenzied, unthinking support is not something that appeals to the average voter.  In other words it cannot spread past a certain hyper religious demographic.

However on the negative side it means that her followers will do ANYTHING for her.  I have even read a couple of e-mails directed at myself and others which spoke of their willingness to die on her behalf.  These are not well adjusted people, and there is really not much that we could put past them.  Make no mistake, though the majority of the Palin-bot responses to people critical of their "Queen Esther" is to send out angry, misspelled e-mails, there are a handful that are willing to go much further.

What I keep reminding myself, is that even crazy people only get one vote, so if we continue to reveal the insane truth about Sarah Palin, Christine O'Donnell, Jan Brewer, Rand Paul, and all of the other potential Teabagging wingnuts, just maybe we can keep them from overrunning our country.

But that means WE have to get out there and vote!  I don't care how busy you are, NOBODY is too busy to save their country.

When I first saw this picture, I thought I should be offended because Sarah Palin's image is being used to defile a crucifix. But I'm actually more offended that Sarah Palin's image is being used to defile Rachel Welch in 3 Million B.C.

Getting out the Democratic vote is THE most crucial issue, I agree. The most frightening thing I read in this post is that the candidate's ignorance of a subject can be used to their advantage, if worded correctly. This is unfortunately true, because even O'Donnell's appearance last night already muted some critics when she said, essentially, "I was young and passionate and don't we all make mistakes (?) when we're young and blah, blah, blah..." It's tough to convince people how crazy these women are, when some voters' minds are already made up how "saintly" they are. But we must try!

@7:13 - it's "Raquel" Welch. It would be great to put the two of them in a public debate. Both actor-divas, but Raquel is smarter.

Anyone who sees $P this way (as Raquel Welch on a cross) is emotionally, psychologically, and socially stunted, viewing women through the prism of a Madonna/Whore split.

Oh, and $P has a "Madonna/Whore" complex herself. Obviously.

True. It took Sarah far less time to become corrupted!!

Gryphen, you are right - voting is the most important thing we can do to keep these people out of office. And I am still hoping that ANYONE who has ANY KIND of information that can be used to discredit Palin will now finally come forward - before it's too late!

We can assume that Palin won't get enough votes to actually win an election...but do we really want to take that kind of gamble with our country's future??

The separation of church and state clause was included in the constitution for people like palin, dobson, graham and all the others that belive they have a direct line with their own version of god. She is a very sick person who is leading her flock into the cess pool of lies and hatred. Another Jim Jones dressed as a woman. Bring forward the lie of her 5th child and her not being the biological mother and maybe some justice will prevail.

    Gryphen,

The point that MUST be made ---and this is why Dems lose elections: they miss the point in their willingness to go down the religious nutcase path--the point that must be made is this:

It didn't take Sarah Palin 30 years of politics to be seduced by political and moral compromise.

She was already seduced by the heady waves of power when she, as mayor, spent $50,000 to remodel her office. Imagine, for a town of 5,000, she spent $50,000 to redecorate?

She was already seduced by it when as mayor she forced the city to go ahead with the sports center when the title to the land was unclear, costing the city an extra $1.7 million in settlement and court cost for a piece of land that would have costed only $125k if they had handled it right from the beginning in 1998. (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/29/1223/87119/35/578632)

Sarah Palin was already seduced by the heady waves of power when she, as governor, abused that power, as clearly stated in the Legislature's Branchflower Report, to stalk her ex brother in law and fire Walt Monegan.

No, this is a woman who does not have the servant's heart she claims so boldly. This is no Esther and this is no one who is fit to hold ANY public office.

The religious nutcase angle is interesting, but it will not make the case as the cold, hard facts of her ACTUAL RECORD.

She was already seduced by it when as mayor she forced the city to go ahead with the sports center when the title to the land was unclear, costing the city an extra $1.7 million in settlement and court cost for a piece of land that would have costed only $125k if they had handled it right from the beginning in 1998. Typical TeaBag Christian math, he goes from saying thousands are praying and fasting for her and ends his stupifying note by saying there are 50.

Nonetheless, these people are so desperate for an Esther that they are projecting that honor onto a woman who has no "grace and favor, character, truth or integrity."

True, she hasn't been seduced by 30 years of political and moral compromise like those men in DC, she was seduced in a much smaller time and in a much smaller pond. That 151 proof of power from a ho-dunk Wasilla City Council meeting sealed it for Sarah, already deluding herself for the Governor's Mansion in Juneau and then the White House in Washington.

Another salient fact from this man, Teabaggers are not looking for more knowledge, that is why these political neophytes who struggle with facts, history and legally protected rights are dodging press, two-way communication with their competition and debate.

Hiding behind arbitrary biblical interpretations to a fancy of human delivery under the wraps of the Lord's protection is not a leadership credential.

Yep, Sarah wasn't busy memorizing coda of American policies right before her joke of a VP debate, she was reading a major ego boost of 51 people blowing smoke up her ass.

    Anon @ 7:21,

The point made about Palin, must also be applied to Donnelly. Jon Stewart said it best in his show this past week.

The anti-masturbation endeavor is fun, but what makes the case against O'Donnell is her inability to handle her finances, how, as Karl Rove pointed out, she tried to smear her opponent with the gay accusations, and, to a lesser degree, how she outright LIED about her college credentials.

She has been in a financial tailspin not just in the past few years, but for a very long time. People like to say, oh, she's like us, we've had financial difficulties lately. Well, that "lately" started a long time ago with O'Donnell. She has a pattern of abuse in that area.

Voters don't care if their idols have feet of clay. Deep down inside they know that.

Every time Palin is shown to be a failure of a parent, or "dumb" because she doesn't know words etc, her fans love her more. Palin sets these things up for the media because she knows this. She wrote on her McCain visor and on her hand ON PURPOSE!!! The "refudiate" may have been a real demonstration of ignorance, but in the same way, she turned it into a positive. Come on, stop falling for it. Palin is embarrassingly ignorant when it comes to history, stunningly shallow when it comes to policy, and criminally incompetent when it comes to actual governance, but she is a master at reading the motivations of low information and angry voters and their emotional triggers.

Focus on the RECORD, the LIES, and the GRIFT.

I agree that this does not appeal to the average voter but what we must realize and contend with is the fact that the GOP reaction to a Democratic government was to double down on hatred. Even if they do not gain majority status the fact that they made gains means that they will pursue this course even more fervently. Same as when Bush was handed the election, my thought was "Well, at least they'll stop the screeching now that they're in power.". As we know it only ramped up in volume.

The email didn't frighten me at all.. the pic is very offensive... it deflied the crucificion and what it truly mean...

The pastor gave Palin instructions on how to carry our the debate. She never confess her lack of knowledge and experience. She never took a solid stand against abortion. She was not honest during the debate.

The pastor did said, he could be wrong. So it wasn't a revelation from God, but his own prayer. We can pray for things that we think is right, but it may not be God's Will... The pastor did knew #1. She didn't know the answers to the questions. #2. She don't have knowledge or experience. #3. She can only win by grace and favor (she didn't have it)... The pastor probably didn't know Palin personally, so that mean he will not die for her LOL... So I won't judge the pastor.

Those the send out angry, hateful emails are NOT Christians, they are brainwashed extreme and are dangerous.

Many prayed and fasted for Our president before, during and after the election... I will continue to pray for him, his family and the Administration.

The story of Esther is not as pure as Palin-ites would like to assume. I learned in bible classes in college that Esther was granted favor with the king because she was the one who was best in bed. Now, Esther saved the Jewish people and deserves credit for her bravery, but she was basically a fallen person who did the right thing. Palin-ites conveniently assume Esther was pure and blameless like their queen, but Palin is more of whore than Esther ever was, and not nearly as brave.

If you did a little research you will say why. She didn't come up with 1070 by the way. It was developed by a white supremicist in Mesa, AZ who pushed it. She was against it totally until she realized how popular it would make her with the wingnuts. Yes, she said that God put her in this position. But that is the craziest thing she has said... She isn't a Sarah Palin. I can't believe I am defending her, but to me she is not close to the others you mention who do scare the HELL out of me.

    glenn_greenwald/2010/09/16/tea_party/index.html

I will say that, while Glenn has terrific insight into the reaction to the Tea Party, he has completely missed the mark on the reaction to Sarah Palin.

I don't know ANYBODY who mocked her for being "ordinary." Hell, WE'RE all "ordinary." I was actually jazzed about her... until, I dug into her actual record and watched her in action.

I was turned off by so much and it is hard to write it all down because it is layer upon layer of accumulated knowledge based on what I've read and what I've witnessed.

There is something so vile and ugly about Palin and it shows in her every action, tweet, and public appearance. She goes through life with her elbows out, ready to hurt anyone who she perceives as getting in her way. I think she uses everyone around her. It's sick.

    My partial list:

1)Her mean-spirited (with racist undertones) attacks on Obama and all that "Real Americans" garbage. Hey, what am I?

2)Her phony back story (way overdone) made me feel as if I was being force-fed this "perfect" story. The Wild Ride? Please. I'm not THAT dumb.

3)The level of exaggeration of her "executive" experience. What her legacy really was: a city manager did all the work, leaving her to spend thousands to decorate her mayor's office against the city council vote; the nearly two million Wasilla basically wasted on the sports complex; and how she bought her popularity in Alaska by taxing Big Oil.

4)Her arrogant VP debate "performance." Especially how cold-hearted she was when Biden was talking about his family tragedy.

    5) The results of the Branchflower report.

    6) Her spoiled brat behavior when the AK leg was trying to sit Beth Kertulla in Kim Eltons' old seat.

    7) Accounts by former mentors John Stein, John Bitney, for example, as well as the Anne Kilkenny letter. Those accounts lent a LOT of credibility to the Michael Gross Vanity Fair piece.

I could go on. The point is, nothing here has anything to do with money problems or ordinariness.

Sorry for the double-post at 2:00 and 2:01. When I first posted, I got a message that my comment was too long. So I divided and reposted. Apparently, the too-long comment went through.

i think her supporters chose to believe what they wanted to believe. Looking at her hateful and devious behavior and words, why can't one argue that she is a Satan or a demon!?

  61. It's just so sad that so much of America is enamoured of this woman. Shows you a lot though about 'average' American intelligence though doesn't it, that so many Americans don't believe she's corrupt, egotistical, self-involved and out to make as much money for herself as she can.

This woman couldn't give two hoots about America - just a pity so many Americans don't see it.

She wishes she looked that hot. I hope people will wake up and see that those who proclaim God and Patriotism for themselves and claim they are the only ones are all frauds. We need to stand up and tell them that it is Patriotic to care for fellow Americans and not let them die in the streets because they are hungry or die overseas in an illegal unjust war. We are turning into a third world country and I for one am sick and tired of reporters not reporting on the huge homelessness, joblessness and increase in suicides They should also be placing the blame right where it belongs right at Mr. Boner and Mr. Turtle feet.

The Raquel image was from ONE MILLION YEARS, B.C., which, coincidentally was the last time Sarah read a book.
