Morality is not determined by the church you attend nor the faith you embrace. It is determined by the quality of your character and the positive impact you have on those you meet along your journey

The President's Weekly Address
Transcript courtesy of Daily Kos:
This week, the economists who officially decide when recessions start and end declared the recession of 2008 to be over. But if you’re one of the millions of Americans who lost your home, your job, or your savings as a consequence of the recession, this news is of little comfort or value.
Yes, the economy is growing instead of shrinking, as it was in 2008 and the beginning of 2009. We’re gaining private sector jobs each month instead of losing 800,000, as we did the month I took office.
But we have to keep pushing to promote growth that will generate the jobs we need, and repair the terrible damage the recession has done. That’s why I’ve proposed a series of additional steps: accelerated tax breaks for businesses who buy equipment now; a permanent research and development tax break to promote innovation by American companies; and a new initiative to rebuild America’s roads, rails, and runways that will put folks to work and make our country more competitive.
Taken together with the small business tax cut and lending plan we passed through Congress last week, these steps will help spur jobs in the short run, and strengthen our economy for the long run.
Now, the Republicans who want to take over Congress offered their own ideas the other day. Many were the very same policies that led to the economic crisis in the first place, which isn’t surprising, since many of their leaders were among the architects of that failed policy.
It is grounded in same worn out philosophy: cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires; cut the rules for Wall Street and the special interests; and cut the middle class loose to fend for itself. That’s not a prescription for a better future. It’s an echo of a disastrous decade we can’t afford to relive.
The Republicans in Washington claimed to draw their ideas from a website called “America Speaking Out.”It turns out that one of the ideas that’s drawn the most interest on their website is ending tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas.
Funny ting is, when we recently closed one of the most egregious loopholes for companies creating jobs overseas, Republicans in Congress were almost unanimously opposed. The Republican leader John Boehner attacked us for it, and stood up for outsourcing, instead of American workers.
So, America may be speaking out, but Republicans in Congress sure aren’t listening. They want to put special interests back in the driver’s seat in Washington. They want to roll back the law that will finally stop health insurance companies from denying you coverage on the basis of a preexisting condition. They want to repeal reforms that will finally protect hardworking families from hidden rates and penalties every time they use a credit card, make a mortgage payment, or take out a student loan.
And for all their talk about reining in spending and getting our deficits under control, they want to borrow another $700 billion, and use it to give tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires. On average, that’s a tax cut of about $100,000 for millionaires.
Instead of cutting taxes for the wealthiest few – tax breaks we cannot afford – I’ve called for tax cuts for middle class families who saw their incomes shrink by five percent during the last, lost decade. We’ve already cut 8 different taxes for small business owners to help them hire and grow, and we’re going to cut 8 more. We’re challenging our states and schools to do a better job educating our kids and making college more affordable so America can once more lead the world in the proportion of our kids graduating from college. And we’re putting an end to the days of taxpayer-funded bailouts so Main Street never again has to pay for Wall Street’s mistakes.
America is a great country. Our democracy is vibrant, our economy is dynamic, and our workers can outcompete the best of them. But the way for us to remain the greatest country on Earth isn’t to turn back the clock and put the special interests in charge. It’s to make sure all our people are getting a fair shake. It’s to make sure everyone who’s willing to work for it still has a chance to reach for the American dream. And that will remain my mission every single day so long as I have the honor of serving as President.
Have a nice weekend, everybody.
There is still something very comforting in hearing Obama speak. Even while the Republicans do everything in their power to tear him down, and the media seems to criticize every small setback while missing the huge achievements, he still seems as solid and dependable as the rock that the lighthouse of hope for our country is built upon.
"Barack the rock." That works for me.
Now if we could just get some of our OTHER Democrats to plant their feet as firmly in the ground as their President we might just have a chance of turning back the red tide headed our way in November.

I won't abandon my President. He's doing a tremendous job for what he's inherited.
ReplyDeleteI think back to that rediculous man Greorge W in his stupid speeches, and Sarah with her blowing smoke up lazy ass Americans wanting to be told they are hard working and exceptional enough just as they are. . .
There has been enough progress made in two years that threateningly scare the daylights out of that trenchant fringe that make up the Tea Party and the nations uber wealthy. Enough to get whack-job political neophites to survive the Primaries. We need to put a stop to this joke of a movement in November.
Have a good weekend Mr. President, you and yours.
YES. Everyone be positive. My mutual fund shares went up almost $5per share in the last year. I have 100% domestic stock. I started investing two years ago. Remember, Wally Hickel built the Captain Cook Hotel right after the big earthquake. He wanted people to have confidence. We need to set an example of Faith, and work towards that faith with actions - like voting reasonable politicians into office who won't screw things UP!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm a sooooooooo happy we elected this intelligent, articulate, cool man as our President!
ReplyDeleteThank you Mr. President for rising above the fray to get things done!.
Well stated, and I agree Anon@3
ReplyDelete:11 PM. Especially your second paragraph.
Obama is so much more than we deserve these days: we are so lucky to have an intelligent, well-educated, scandal-free man as our leader. I am so proud of him, and he is one bright light in all our very serious problems.
ReplyDeleteLook at this headline in the NYT right now: Democrats Unleash Ads Focusing on Rivals’ Pasts. Oh, WOW! I can think of someone whose past deserves a good look, especially the Trig HOAX she perpped on us all. Hmmmm?
Amen and amen. We dodged a bullet in 2008. I have little doubt that McGrampa would have "gone to his reward" and shadow powers would be bribing Winky to say anything they wanted her to, as long as she lived in luxury and had a bunch of lackeys waiting on her hand and foot.
ReplyDeleteShe would have shown struggling Americans the same concern as she had when Nick Tucker of Emmonak asked for help.
I was really afraid the election was rigged too heavily (Rolling Stone estimates Diebold could pull 3 million votes either way) and very probably MORE people voted for Obama than the "official" total. Thank God. And I don't say that often.
3 months ago, I realized I had 28K in stock options that will expire in 1 year. I decided to use about 5K on much-needed dental work. Then found out I needed 20K. A month later, I only had 24K. Ouch. I don't want to use my whole nest egg on my teeth! Last week it was 30K, and yesterday 32K.
ReplyDelete"accelerated tax breaks for businesses who buy equipment now; a permanent research and development tax break to promote innovation by American companies;"...these initiatives will most likely drive my stock higher.
Thanks for helping me afford a nice new smile, President Obama! It'll never be as nice as yours, though!
Like JFK, many people will not realize what a great president Obama was, until afterwards. (I was young, but heard so much about how he was only a pawn of the POPE, for cryin' out loud.)
ReplyDeleteI have friends and relatives who refuse to listen to him say one word. I keep telling them how they are going to feel so foolish one day, when they do "retrospective" tv shows about him.
"Ah...well...yeah, he sure was eloquent, alright. And, MAN, did the Democratic party ever get a lot of meaningful legislation put through, in spite of how the opposition did everything short of torturing people, to block them from doing so."
PO is doing an amazing job even with all the obstructionism and downright unpatriotic behavior by the GOP.
ReplyDeleteI hate to think where our country would be right now with McCain at the helm.
I echo the sentiments expressed here. What a relief to have a decent, competent President!
ReplyDeleteRoger - I've been saying how Obama will go down in history with JFK as one of the great Presidents. Not just for his eloquence, but like Anon @10:22 said, for what he's been able to accomplish with all the obstruction he's faced.
ReplyDeleteI'm reminded of the Clinton years, when I didn't see people with "will work for food" signs around their necks like I did in the Bush Sr. years. I remember him asking, while campaigning for his second term, "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?" Of course we were. But the republicans had to keep him from doing his job because he got a little nookie on the side. BFD. I'll always wonder how much more he could have done for this country if so much time and money hadn't been wasted on a BJ.
Could you imagine how much more Obama could have accomplished by now if the republicans weren't such whiny brats, disagreeing on everything whether they really did or not? We all know that if he had a cure for cancer, they'd accuse him of destroying the health care industry.
I love that he doesn't lash out at the attacks, but sticks to the job at hand. I also love that he's doing a little bit of well-deserved lashing out. We know the republicans are trying to keep his hands tied, but he's still managing to get things accomplished. You can't blame him for saying, "hey, elect people who aren't dead set against letting me help you".
It's a shame health care's taking a massive hit, and more people are losing coverage as we speak. bad bills, bad congress, bad president for supporting such an atrocity.
ReplyDeleteHear about the Obama tell-all coming out in a year? Forbes finally spoke truth. Step it up people!
There have to be a whole lotta Right Wingers out there who 1) noticed the increase in their 401Ks, 2) were able to get medical coverage for their college student dependents AT NO ADDITIONAL COST, and 3)whose loans were modified to a more affordable level.
ReplyDeleteBut I doubt you are going to hear them sing Obama's praises.
MicMac
It boggles my mind that people like Jon Stewart are saying the president isn't doing a good job. Never, ever, ever has there been a president who has faced such a tremendous, focused and constant stream of vile and unchecked opposition intent on spreading lies. Right now, on one of those political talk shows, someone's probably implying he's a liberal, a radical, or responsible for the national debt. Jon Stewart, I thought, would be smart to see through the crap. Guess not.
ReplyDeleteAnon7:51--I too have always thought that that the GOP plan was (1) win the election, (2) McCain dies of "natural causes," (3) SP becomes the willing puppet of our new masters (Koch brothers, Rupert Murdoch, Heinz, et al.).
ReplyDeleteI further think that the economic debacle was scheduled to arrive AFTER the election. (McCain was sure unprepared to deal with it before the election, thank goodness.) So many opportunities for financial grifting in a crisis. To say nothing of doing the Republican "tax reduction for the billionaires" dance ASAP.
So I agree with you: we sure dodged a bullet. But we are not safe yet. It sure looks Hitlerian to me, esp see the coverage re the Forbes magazine piece. The writer is amazingly corrupt, as is Fotbes magazine for publishing this.
Thank you, President Obama. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteRarely has an election been so black and white.
ReplyDeleteThe choice in November is between the party that has ended the recession and those that caused it - and are ready to do it again.
The choice is between the party that does something and the party of NO.
The choice is between the party that extended health care to everyone - and the party of torture. They TORTURED HUMAN BEINGS!
The choice in 2008 was between a man that majored in Political Science with a specialty in International Affairs and graduated at the very top of his class, then graduated magnum cum laude from Harvard Law School and went on to teach constitutional law at the college level. His running mate had a dual-major in college majoring in both History and Political Science. He also went on to graduate law school and taught constitutional law at the college level.
...The opposition was someone (who wouldn't have graduated at all had his father and grandfather not been high-ranking military officers) who barely graduated at the very bottom of his class - and then went on to crash 5 jet airplanes. His running mate took 5 years to graduate a four-year course in journalism - but was female and very pretty.
Thankfully America made the right choice then - and hopefully - will make the right choice in November.
VOTE.
We have to remember what else will win if they take control and all things considered, probably has won. That is the fact that after they lost in '08 all they did was double down on the hatred and fear baiting. This will only be worse after November. People need to be reminded, not only who got us in this mess but what their reaction has been for the last 2 years, overreacting and whining, crying and screaming about every little thing.
