The "Rally to Restore Sanity" has inspired satellite rallies all over the country. I guess we could ALL use a little more sanity.

Politico:

Soon after Jon Stewart’s Rally to Restore Sanity was announced, a handful of satellite rallies were announced via Facebook. Now there are shadow rallies planned in 47 states and six foreign countries for October 30, according to rallymao.com, and predicted attendance numbers keep climbing. It seems the world is going crazy for sanity.

POLITICO spoke to organizers for a few of the farther-flung rallies to find out why Stewart’s event is resonating so far and wide.

Amy Lee, along with her friend Ashley Wright, is organizing the Los Angeles-based Rally to Restore Sanity.

“A couple of weeks ago, while we were having dinner together, we were talking about how much we wanted to go to the D.C. rally,” wrote Lee, a 38 year-old who works in production and H.R, and Wright, a 32 year-old post-doctoral biology scholar at Caltech, in an e-mail. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t afford the time and money it would take to travel all the way to the East Coast.” They said that within two weeks of setting up a Facebook page for their event, 2,500 people had signed up to support a rally at L.A.'s Pershing Square.*

“We are Jon Stewart fans who love the spirit of the D.C. rally to ‘Take it Down a Notch for America’,” Lee and Wright added. The pair, along with a number of volunteer organizers, are trying to raise funds for a LED Screen to broadcast the main D.C. event to the crowd.

Similarly, Alaskan Blake Merrifield, a 38-year-old construction worker, told POLITICO that he hopes the Wasilla-based rally he has planned will give some Alaskans a brief respite from the extremes of the current political dialogue.

“For us this is a temporary cease-fire in a particularly hostile political season. It is a chance for the community to get together and have a laugh and a smile at the absurdity that is politics and media today,” Merrifield said.

Wow, I guess I could ahve saved the money on plane tickets and stayed for the rally in Wasilla.  Is it even possible to restore sanity in Wasilla?

The Chicago Tribune muses that perhaps this rally will give voice to the "Silent Majority."

Many have taken to calling themselves "we the people," because it sounds rebel-ish, in a tri-cornered hat kind of way. The nation is swept up in anti-incumbent fervor, and we're mad. We're mad, mad, mad, mad.

Except that, by and large, we're not really all that mad. A Pew Research Center poll earlier this year found only 21 percent of Americans "angry" at the federal government. And the term "anti-incumbent fervor" loses a bit when you learn that, according to political scientist Michael Robinson, 98 percent of all congressional incumbents who ran in this year's primaries prevailed. If the narratives of this election season can — GASP! — be called into question, it's worth considering whether an upcoming comedic event might present a more serious reflection of our collective state of mind.

You know the opportunity to demonstrate that the majority of Americans are not out of their freaking minds, or disappointed in the Obama administration because the media keeps telling them they ought to be, seems like perhaps one of the best reasons to hold a rally that I can imagine.

Just to give you an update on my plans for the rally, I have recently purchased a small, not terribly expensive computer, called the ASUS.  It is a fast little guy and it will get the job done for any blogging I might do while attending the rally. (And before all of you MAC people start giving me a hard time I looked into purchasing one of their laptops but could not find one for less than $1,200.00 and just did NOT feel like paying that much for a computer that I may only use occasionally when I return home.)

I just got off the phone to confirm my hotel reservations, and it looks like everything is a go.

I have received a number of e-mails from people who want to meet up and I think that would be fun so I will try to organize a time and place for us to meet.  I do not know the area so any help that you can provide would be wonderful. The Mudpuppies are already organizing something as well and so we can all meet as one group or do a separate meetup if you all want.

I will be in D.C. on October 28th, and leaving the day after the rally so I will have some time to sightsee and meet with people.

As it gets closer to the day of my departure I have to say I am starting to get pretty excited.  I think it will be a blast and am glad I caved into the pressure I received from some of you to attend.

See? Sometimes being a pain in the ass does work!

I love my ASUS. I bet you will too. Mine came with built-in wifi so it goes all over the place. Starbucks has free wifi now. Since Starbucks is all over, you will likely be able to hookup. And I mean that in the best possible way.

It'll be nice to run into you with the mudpups in D.C.

And a construction worker? In Wasilla? Taking it down a notch? Wow. I think I'm in love.

Gryphen - One important thing you should check into, if you haven't already, is the Internet connectivity in your hotel room. A lot of hotels still charge $10.00/day for that, but hopefully in D.C. that's not the case.

We are all thrilled for you! Have the time of your life at an unforgettable event.

P.S. You Alaskans are so fortunate to have a GEM of a candidate in Scott McAdams. Even though I'm in California, I just donated to his campaign. Each day, Miller is proving himself to be a lying, disingenuous, totally unqualified wimp. His WalMart plaid flannel shirt and so-called "beard" - and the gum chewing! - disqualify him for office, and that's before he even opens his mouth. GO SCOTT MCADAMS!!

Be sure to get across the Potomac and visit Mount Vernon. It is an absolutely beautiful estate, and you will feel yourself transported back to the time of George and Martha Washington.

This is such exciting news. I hope the local rallies get some good air time during the event. Hopefully, Jon will continue to carry over the event and the shadow events in the following weeks. I am so jealous of all of you who are going. I live 2 hours away but I will be out of the country. I really want to go. It will be a good time for sure. Have fun Gryphen, DC is a great city. Comfy walking shoes is a must.

good for you gryph - i am very envious of your attendance there! i can't get down to dc that weekend and i live in maine. i am wondering if anyone has had any luck finding out about satellite rallies? i tried the usual search engines and facebook, but no luck. if any place, it would be in portland, and that is doable for me, but so far no beta. any suggestions anyone, other than starting one myself, which will be my last resort, as long as you can watch it live-streamed from the internet and folks don't mind coming to my house (i will have to limit the number to 50,000, unfortunately. and we have canada geese flying to and fro all the time - surely a sign!!!

Anyone going to DC - be sure to keep up with the latest information via this link to The Mudflats: http://www.themudflats.net/forum/index.php/topic,10670.0.html

Important updates to the info will be posted on the first page, in bright blue and in a larger font.

The Rally will be taking place on the Mall between 3rd and 7th Streets, in the parks known as Henry and East Seton, from noon until about 3PM. There is a main Metro station right near there, with 4 different lines running into that exchange.

Tentative meet-up is for around 9AM at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, which is on Maryland Avenue, and right across from the Rally location.

Everyone is asked to tuck one large trash bag into their pocket or purse so that we don't leave trash behind if at all possible. The filled and tied up bags can be left in the area for park workers to pick up, and that will be much better than leaving litter everywhere for them to pick up.

There is a FAQ page with further info: http://www.rallytorestoresanity.com/faq/

For info on the Metro, find it here:
    http://www.wmata.com/

It is recommended that one either buy the SmartTrip cards ahead of time on-line or allow extra time for purchasing your tickets at the kiosks, as they tend to get busy, especially when there are large groups such as anticipated. Checking into prices, it seems the lowest ticket is $1.95, and the largest amount is $5.00 - and that seems to be if you ride the whole way around, but if there is anyone from the DC area familiar with the Metro, would appreciate any info as the website isn't real clear on distances for the fee. Tickets purchased on-line start at $30, which is $25 worth of riding and a $5 fee. Additional amounts can be purchased on-line and it will automatically register on your card. Each rider must have their own card, no sharing of cards to get on the trains or buses.

Between this site and the Mudflats, there are close to 100 people who say they are going. Most are not from Alaska, one is even coming from Ireland. I'm in the processing of making some name tags with yellow boots and a moose to identify us with the Mudflats, and we all plan to wear yellow scarves of some sort so that we can easily find one another. We are more than happy to have anyone from IM join up with us!

Hubby and I are staying in the Shady Grover area of Gaithersburg - anyone else staying in that area?

  17. I'm going! Driving from Minneapolis to Chicago to get on a chartered bus that a couple of guys and Facebook put together!
Gryphen- there's a map of the area that you can enlarge and see the area. We'll be rallying on the east Mall area between 3rd and 7th. This is in front of the Capitol building.
There are a couple of national museums on either side of the are so perhaps meeting in front of one of them would work?
really hoping to meet up with you and am checking in with the Mudpups too:-)
    Cheers!
