From Keith Olbermann's Twitter account:
Greetings From Exile! A quick, overwhelmed, stunned THANK YOU for support that feels like a global hug & obviously left me tweetless XO 2 hours ago via web
I for one hope that Keith's "exile" is short lived.
We need his voice to help bring light to the Republican dirty tricks and their carefully orchestrated attacks on our President.
Update: According to Politico there may have been more to Keith's suspension than just the fact that he made the contributions:
BEHIND THE CURTAIN: Network sources tell Playbook that Keith Olbermann was suspended because he refused to deliver an on-camera mea culpa, which would have allowed him to continue anchoring “Countdown.” Olbermann told his bosses he didn't know he was barred from making campaign contributions, although he is resisting saying that publicly.
This is beginning to sound less and less like an incident of breaking the rules, and more and more like somebody wanting to take Keith down a few pegs.
Keith doesn't let the Dems entirely off the hook either, particularly the Blue Dogs.
ReplyDeleteLove ya, Keith. Come back soon!
ReplyDeleteI'm confident that if he doesn't get his old job back, he'll be snatched up quickly by any smart network. He's not going to be unemployed for long.
ReplyDeleteMSNBC President Griffen is also the one who verbally whacked Ed Schultz and demanded he apologize for something.
ReplyDeleteI am going to do a bit of research and see if I can come up with his resume. I suspect he has some ties to things that aren't, well, progressive.
I just finished writing a note to Keith's boss, Mr. Griffin. In it, I asked that he go after Fox (Hannity and O'Reilly especially) highlighting their constantly promoting candidates, particpating in fundraisers and donating their own funds.
ReplyDeleteSuggested too that he (Griffin) had made a horrible mistake and that his timing could not have been worse!
Keith and Rachel are the MSNBC stars, there is no doubt. I'll be off the air w/them until we see what occurs w/Keith. Sad for Rachel because it will not be her fault!
I'm afraid there ARE no other "networks" that will go against the corporatist stronghold on the media, like MSNBC has been.
ReplyDeleteAnd I sure hope that the "has been" phrase is not going to turn out to be the case, overall.
If indeed, we see the demise of the only source of "middle" political information, we will be left only with PURE propaganda...as CNN and all the rest, have shifted radically to the right.
We'll be left with passing each other notes as we pretend to be walking by.
I remember hearing everyone laughing when 1984 came, that Orwell's predictions in his book of that name, did not come to pass.
It seems its just a little late. How odd does it NOW sound, if you hear a governmental thug ask: "If the State says I am holding up three fingers, when it is only two, how many fingers am I holding up?"
Okay, here's an article that gives some history of Griffen v. Olbermann.
ReplyDeleteGriffen produced The Big Show with Keith Olbermann 1997-1998.
In June 2008, " . . . in a profile in the New Yorker, Keith Olbermann famously said of Mr. Griffin, "Phil thinks he’s my boss.”
So, maybe it's not that Phil Griffen has a thing against progressives, maybe he just has a thing against Keith. Plus, it does sound just a tad bit like a pissing contest to prove that he (Phil Griffen) IS the boss.
I think he's off-base. But GE owns NBC and MSNBC, so it makes sense they want to control who gives money to what Party or candidate. That whole "permission" thing smells to high heaven. I wonder if they ever deny permission - it might be why Keith didn't ask.
Considering that GE is a huge defense contractor now and that GE wants to get on the good side of the Rethugs (GE itself has contributed tons of money to the Republican candidates and their Pary), Griffen might also be trying to reign in his progressive hosts so as not to annoy GE's vested interest brokers.
Sure reminds me of when I worked for an insurance brokerage and they told their employees to send letters to the editors, which charities to donate to and systematically fired all top and middle managers if they discovered you were a Democrat or Independent. No joke.
Oops - forgot the url to the article about Olbermann and Griffen.
ReplyDeleteNote it dates back to July 2008 when Griffen took over MSNBC.

Okay, here's kicker:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/03/phil-griffin-msnbc-presid_n_560746.html
An article wherein Phil Griffin actually says he " . . . hopes MSNBC can grow to be more like Fox News, but that he won't be putting any "hard-right shows" on his network."
I think that feeds into this suspension of Keith.
I would like to see Griffin suspended instead, wouldn't you? Goodness knows, we have enough Fox-like news shows already. We want quality instead like Keith and Rachel.
Miss you, Keith!
ReplyDeleteSarah Palin is now an expert in banking and economics and plans on lecturing (I.e chastising Ben Bernacke tomorrow!! What a joke!! Does anyone in the country believe she wrote that speech herself?? I'm sure she doesnt understand it !!!
ReplyDeleteROFL'nnn hahaha!!!!!
Does Olbermann have a contract with MSNBC? If so, can they ourright fire him, or does he have some sort of recourse for keeping his current job? Although with the way he has been treated, why would he want his old job back? It will be interesting to see how this ends up.
ReplyDeleteIf professional commentators are restricted as to their comments, where does that leave the rest of us?
Here's an idea Keith. If you are out of a job, then you have the perfect opportunity to use investigative journalism skills and expose Sarah Palin's faked pregnancy with Tri-G. You will become wealthy beyond your wildest imagination and cen spend your free time afterwards doing good works throughout the world.!!!
ReplyDeleteCheck palin's throat for mild bruising.
ReplyDeleteI think there is much more to this than campaign contributions. Phil Griffen wants to prove he has control over his people- it's a power trip. Majorly bad move on his part. Keith and Rachel make that station. People watch Chris, Ed and Lawrence but not nearly with the same enthusiasm as they do Rachel and Keith.
ReplyDeleteWe can all live without the other three, but many of us will not watch ANY programming on MSNBC until Keith is back. I damn sure won't.
if MSNBC doesn't want him, I'm sure the MLB does
ReplyDeletekeith rocks. I sure would like to have a beer with him.
ReplyDeletetruely this is no skin off his back. I'm sure he appreciates the support just as I'm sure he's lhao at these dumb shits who pulled this move and made themselves look like jerks.
Commentators are required to deliver TRUTH.
ReplyDeleteIndividuals can support whomever they wish...this IS America, after all.
Go Keith!
I won't watch MSNBC or any clip of anything on the site until Keith is back on his show.
ReplyDeleteI also will not buy any product of General Electric. Sorry but repression of Opinion based TV is where I draw the line. Enough already trying to silence the left. I told my son, it is okay if people want to name call and say I am liberal or leftist. I am proud to stand up for all Amereicans not just the rich. I am for entitlement programs that help the less fortunate. I don't want anyone going hungry in America. So many people are out of work and desperate, some of them homeless and hungry. This is not anything to be proud of but needs to be fixed.

Mudflats is reporting that Keith will be back on the air Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteThere are other places he can go, though the money would not be as good.
ReplyDeleteJust about any liberal or progressive online site would love to have a regular spot from him.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/07/keith-olbermann-to-return_n_780141.html
ReplyDeleteHe's back on-the-air Tuesday night.
Ah, looks like the MSNBC management realized making Olbermann stay with MSNBC was more punishment than letting him walk out scott free to name his price at some other network. But I would bet that when contract renewal time comes around, Olbermann finds himself showered with offers. You lose, MSNBC.
ReplyDeleteI won't get my hopes up again until it happens. I just knew Palin's Deception, Bree Palin, Levi, Meghan McCain,or Nicole Wallace would blow her out of the water. No Dice yet.
ReplyDeleteThis was just Phil Griffin engaging in his latest pissing contest with the MSNBC on air talent. He wanted to prove that HE had the huevos elefante and he seemed to feel the need to whip them out and show everybody.
ReplyDeleteSince Olbermann will be back on Tuesday, it looks like Griffin is señor huevos raton. Griffin was so eager to satisfy his petty ego that he would risk wrecking his network in the process. Someone should fire Griffin for being so stupid and reckless. He certainly wasn't doing the advertisers or stockholders any favors.
