It has been an interesting election night so far.
The Republicans gained 50 seats in the House to take the majority, incumbents are being taken out right and left, but for the most unconventional candidates, the Teabaggers, the night has been one of very mixed results.
Rand Paul was victorious in Kentucky, however Christine O'Donnell is not only not a witch, she is also not a Senator.
Marco Rubio won in Florida, but Carl Paladino was forced to take his stupid orange bat and go home.
Jan Brewer remains the Governor of Arizona, but fellow "Mama Grizzlies" Sharron Angle, Carly Fiorina, and Meg Whitman went down in defeat.
As for Alaska's three way Senate race featuring Sarah Palin butt-boy Joe Miller, past incumbent now write-in candidate Lisa Murkowski, and all around great guy Scott McAdams, well the polls have recently closed and the votes are just now trickling in.
As of this initial post, with 27.6% of precincts reporting, the numbers are as follows:
Joe Miller with 23,504 votes , or 34.15%
Scott McAdams with 17,414 votes, or 25.32%
And the write-in votes at 27,142 or 39.44% of the votes.
I will keep updating as the votes continue to roll in, but if you get impatient and want to check for yourself simply click here.
First update:
With 34.2% reporting
Joe Miller 29,242 votes or 34.45%
Scott McAdams 21,072 or 24.82%
Write-in votes 33,672 or 39.66%
Second update:
With 40% of precincts reporting.
Joe Miller 33,990 or 34.62%
Scott McAdams 24,430 or 24.88%
Write-in votes 38,727 or 39.45%
Against all odds it appears that Murkowski is winning this thing. Unless of course there are a whole hell of a lot of other names being written in along with hers!
If Lisa wins it will be about two weeks before her votes are all tallied. Oh joy!
Third update:
With 51.1% of precincts reporting.
Joe Miller 44,502 or 34.69%
Scott McAdams 31,827 or 24.81%
Write-in votes 50,655 or 39.49%
Fourth update: No new numbers to report, I just thought I would let you know that I am exhausted and headed off to bed. I will put up a new post in the morning to let everybody know what the numbers are, but as of right now it looks like we will not have an official winner for about two weeks.
BTW just to put a smile on your face, there are reports that the Republicans are royally pissed off at Sarah Palin for interfering in the primaries, because it looks like her meddling may have been what allowed the Democrats to hang onto the Senate.
Perhaps Karl Rove will now steal Keith Olbermann's signature line concerning Palin, 'That woman...is an idiot!"
Never thought I'd say this..but thank you sister Sarah Palin for delivering the Senate to the Democrats!....Karl Rove must be making a few phone calls right about now...
ReplyDeletetsunami Republican takeover? more like a tropical wave
ReplyDeleteI would love to see a tally of the Palin endorsed candidates who won/lost their races today. Also the ones who won/lost their primaries. Since we know most people believe Palin is not qualified to be president, I wonder if her endorsement has any influence positive or negative on voters. I noticed she has spent little or no time in NH and the North East. I believe I have read that the candidates in NH felt her endorsement to be a negative.
ReplyDeleteI guess Angle won't be answering ANY questions now. Heh.
ReplyDeleteI am certainly NOT a Lisa Murkowski fan - but GO LISA! Just to frost ms. quittypants a$$.
ReplyDeleteKKKarl Rove is going to be PISSED at the foul-mouthed grifter from AK, Mrs. Paylin.
The repubs could have won the Senate if not for her meddling and promoting Angle and O'Donnell.
I"m sad that McAdams isn't faring better than he is. Now, we are assuming the write-ins are Murkowski right? My dh came home with his sticker and I said, "Just tell me you didn't vote for Miller" and he said he didn't, but that he wrote in our dog's name...
ReplyDeleteI hope he's kidding and he likely is, but the write-in vote doesn't necessarily mean Murkowski.
I'd like to see a larger margin there...
Well, it looks doubtful that McAdams has any chance of winning.........I'm now almost hoping that Miller eventually prevails over Murkowski. Why? Because if she wins this time, we'll never get rid of her! With Joe Miller there would be the hope of a recall effort (or maybe his delusional plot of Randy Ruedrich/Frank Murkowki putting a hit out on him might actually come true).
ReplyDeleteOn the brighter side, Harry Reid appears to have held onto his seat. Also maybe Barbara Boxer. I have things to be thankful for despite the disappointing local results. bt
Looks like Murkowski is going to win because too many fucking weak scared democrats voted for her. You democrats out there tha tvoted for Lisa you have no right to call yourself a democrat anymore.
ReplyDeleteI want McAdams to win - or even Lisa - but definitely not Miller. If McAdams wins, Palin is the reason it happened. If Lisa wins, then it will piss Sarah off. Lisa will also remember what Sarah had done, and so will her supporters in Alaska. And you know that payback is a bitch.
ReplyDeleteWhile she might make history as a write in, I suspect she will end up like Franken, with challenges and a court deciding the outcome.
ReplyDeleteLocally here they said voter intent, then back off when it looked like Fry was winning and demanded that her full name be spelled correctly, bubbled in, etc. That threw out enough votes for the Republican former police chief to win.
So Donna won, but on a technicality, she lost.
I suspect even with a big lead, the same may happen to Lisa. It will undergo a challenge, votes will be tossed and Miller the nutjob will go to Washington, D.C.
(Until he has a major meltdown and ends up being replaced. Probably with Lisa Murkowski.)
Gee, with Miller Alaska might have been able to take the whacko senator title away from Bachmann in Minnesota.
Hey, I hear there's a movement on to have Bachmann nominated for Speaker of the House.
Scott ran a great campaign. Had the thinking people in this state got off their couches, voted, and voted for the only candidate with ideas, honor and integrity, it would have been a landslide for him. Hope you enjoy your gridlock, Alaska.
ReplyDeleteI don't know. People generally vote for their guy. Reid won because Sharron is an idiot. Tea partiers chose some outrageous people to put up. It is a good excuse to blame Sarah thought, them good ol boys who are pissed at the world and looking for a scapegoat
ReplyDeletegryph.
ReplyDeletejust a quick thank you. ive been looking forward all day to getting home and looking at your blog...
youve done a AMAZING job covering the senate race there and im on pins and needles waiting for the results...
thank you for all you do.
i hope to GOD that i wake up tommorow and joe miller is crushed in the numbers.
EPIC. FAIL.
I supported Lisa and am thrilled that we may have made history.
ReplyDeleteMiller is a big baby and went home to beat his dog or something. I did meet Scott and what a nice man! I hope that it is not the last we see of him.
Once again GO LISA!!!
Sarah if your turn you head sideways, I can see Lisa as the Senator from AK.
ReplyDeleteTime for Repukes to put up or shut up. Yet in every interview I watched last night, when asked to provide one, just one, specific item they would cut to help balance the budget, all we got was more dancing around the subject.
ReplyDeleteWell done, Gryphen. here are a few comments from the world press about the bigger picture:
ReplyDeleteThe Telegraph U.K."
"The extent of the kicking the Democratic party has received in the mid-term elections will be clear by the time you read this. There is a more striking consideration, however: why has the Obama phenomenon imploded with the force it has, just two years after the President’s stunning triumph? For it is so mighty a fall that it is something of an achievement."

The Australian Age:
"Charisma has its limits. Hope can fade. The once-soaring ascendancy of Barack Obama has come crashing down as the American people have just delivered the greatest rejection a President has received in almost 80 years.
Not since 1932, amid the tumult of the Great Depression, has the party which controlled the White House and the Congress, seen such a cascade of rejection as President Obama's Democrats.

International Herald tribune:
Somewhere along the way, the apostle of change became its target, engulfed by the same currents that swept him to the White House two years ago. Now, President Obama must find a way to recalibrate with nothing less than his presidency on the line.
The verdict delivered by voters on Tuesday effectively put an end to his transformational ambitions and left him searching for a way forward... .____________________________
Tne Mail Online (U.K.)
All the excitement and hope of two years ago was just a distant memory in the private residence of the White House this morning.
Barack Obama remained resolutely out of sight as his hopes of bringing about more change in America crumbled with the Democrat majority in the House of Representatives.

So to all of you who took solace in andrew Sullivan's witch hunt, Gryphen's otherwordly ability to collect a following that obsessively tried to make 2 +2=5, who chortled to Cher's zingers of Palin, and for your
legendary obsession with the woman herself, thank you for a historic pummeling of the left tonight.
Independents wouldn't have a cup of coffee with the left and hispanics are going to looking towards Marco Rubio as someone who understands their generational challenges.
But you'll always have Berlin and Katie Couric during what will seem like an eternal winter of your discontent.
Either "The Teabagger phenomenon that wasn't" or "The Teabagger phenomena that weren't." Please?
ReplyDeleteThe last time I was this kind of happy=relieved was when Obama won. Now I owe God all kinds of favors.
ReplyDeleteThis is a Republican state and although i am a democrat, I can stomach Lisa. She has worked really hard and although I do not agree with her positions, she doesnt need to be co-opted by that nutcase Joe Miller.
Perhaps this will be the last we will see of Sarah Palin--finally people are getting it.
Now Lisa, it is time to go after Sarah--how about the IRS? that should finish her up.
And of course, the ongoing HuffPo Sarah Palin Fan Club is calling her a "winner" in their list of winners/losers from last night. Hah!
ReplyDeleteNext time anyone finds themselves at one of her appearances (isn't she gonna start another book tour soon?), pull a Rocky Horror move and throw TOAST.
Large voter turnout in our area of PA yesterday. The median age appeared to be well over 70. Most, surprisingly, came over to our Dem table. We tried our best for Sestak, but I'm sure he'll be back in the future. Glad to see that with Mama Grisly's sparkling personality and help, we retained the senate.
Ought to be an interesting and scary two years.
Oh, and Rethugs? I'm giving you THREE MONTHS to straighten out the economy, OK?
I highly doubt the reason the Palin picks didn't win was because of her. They were fringe. Plus, if a voting citizen actually votes for a candidate in THEIR PERSONAL state based on what someone from another state says, that's just sad. Nah, I think the Right got cocky and stupid and fucked themselves over. And losers have to have a scapegoat to sooth their egos. Look at the 08 election and Mccain aids. They had to blame someone to cover their asses and careers. Why not blame the flight attendant.
ReplyDeleteBTW just to put a smile on your face, there are reports that the Republicans are royally pissed off at Sarah Palin for interfering in the primaries, because it looks like her meddling may have been what allowed the Democrats to hang onto the Senate.
ReplyDeleteAnd that, in a nutshell, is the teabagger phenomenon that was. They threw away sure Republican wins in Nevada, Delaware, and maybe Colorado. And even if Murkowski stays on, there's bound to be some strain between her and the party.
Teabaggerdom didn't help the Republicans. It hurt them. They need to think long and hard on that.
I've been thankful for Palin's keeping the hatred alive and out there. Of course I thought thta sane folks would see the choice and reject it. I gotta wonder just what's going on with folks who embrace people like Miller and RAnd(named after a woman) when they get so many votes even after their personal lives come to light.
ReplyDeleteI don't mean to make fun of Alaska, but seriously, there is ONE member of the house?! And Sarah Palin think that being half term governor of a state that has the population to warrante ONE house member makes her the 'executive' of the "largest" state?! Please. Rhode Island and Delaware have one house member too. I have one house member (who needs to retire) for my mid-sized city in NC. Pffft!
ReplyDeleteLet's not forget Palin only gets in when she sees the candidates moving ahead. She gets the publicity, but have no boots on the ground, unlike Romeny and others who have structures.I think Sarah believes all she has to do is say she is running and everyone else will do the work.Teabaggers are the vehicle through which Rove and cohorts use hate/race to push older white people to vote.Rachel has factually shown this on her show, but the rest of the media, never discuss this.Watch Sarah try to take credit for the wins and continue to gin up hate and racism. Thank heavens for the bloggers who will continue to expose her and the Teabaggers.
ReplyDeleteA sad day for us Ohioians. We're screwed.
ReplyDeleteOhiovoter
Is everyone in Florida, Kentucky etc. celebrating by burning their medicare cards & returning their social security checks this morning? Hope they are willing to back up their tea party votes with action, stand by their claim for no govt handouts by not retiring & never taking another govt check again, and enjoy continuing to contribute their taxes to help the weathiest Americans get even richer while the rest of us get poorer & poorer. Those states need to NEVER ever take a federal government check again.
ReplyDeleteSomeone should be keeping track on a blog or something, of every single Repug and tea partier in office that accepts anything from the government for their home state and call them out on it.
And what's with the talking heads coming out with Sarah Palin had a big win yesterday! Ugh! (I think the Palin tally was something like 6 wins, 3 losses - not counting Alaska yet, but it may have included it as a loss - I don't remember I was too busy freaking out over hearing Palin praised on CNN)
I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER understand the general public - why are they so easily manipulated, believe the lies, and vote against themselves. **sigh**
And to the young folks and minorities out there who stayed home - shame on you! You helped hand this country over to the loons - and why? Because President Obama didn't do enough for you? Do you think the loony toons will do anything at all? No they won't - they will only try to undo what has been done, and try to shut down govt all together. Enjoy your temporary smugness as your future is getting flushed down the toilet by repugs and teabaggers.
Sorry for ranting - but I need to let off steam. At least it was only a small tidal wave and not a tsunami, but that is little comfort right now.
I plan on taking a break from all things political for awhile. Two years will go by way too fast and I need to sooth my nerves for awhile and avoid the insanity for a bit in order to survive 2010 without a total freak out.
What is WRONG with Alaskans?? Only 1/4 of people voted vote the sane guy??
ReplyDeleteAlso, how did Mr. Milktoast Nobody get re-elected as Governor???
I think a very large part of the problem is that the grey-hairs are deciding elections these days, and it ain't pretty. The grey-hairs as a demographic are very much more stick-in-the-mud than the rest of us.
No guarantee that Miller doesn't win this thing. I don't trust that enough people wrote in Lisa Murkowski.
Frankly? Sucks to be an Alaskan. Glad I'm not.
Perhaps Palin knows Murkowski is going to win this thing and that's the reason she (is she bringing the rest of the family?) is getting out of Dodge (Alaska.) I've been hearing that she is going to move to Arizona. I guess it's a little too cold in Alaska for her these days, and I don't mean the temperature.
ReplyDeleteSad day for America, but chins up, progressives! This could very well end up being the worst thing that ever happened to the GOP. Leadership leads to dissension, the Dems got rid of all their conservative members in the House, it'll be easier for us to stay together. Plus we're now, officially, the party of moderation. There are no liberals anymore. No more progressive boogeymen exist in the chambers. Also, too, if these candidates are anything like the ones from 1994, they'll be gone soon. The candidates swept in in 1994 ended up getting embroiled in scandals because they were poorly vetted. We'll see whether there are more Nazi re-enactors and/or Mark Foleys.
ReplyDelete"I'm now almost hoping that Miller eventually prevails over Murkowski."
ReplyDeleteThat is one of the most ignorant statements I have ever read. Only someone who has no knowledge of how the US Senate works would ever say they think Joe Miller would be a suitable Senator. Of course maybe people are so juvenile in Alaska, they need to kick it upstairs to the grownups in the rest of the country to deal with that asshat when you all didn't have the courage to force him to withdraw. Shame on Alaska. Shame.
I am very sorry McAdams didn't win, but Lisa Murkowski's victory is the second best outcome. It is the very BEST outcome if you want to make Palin's head explode though. Because I would bet that this is more upsetting to her than a Democratic victory. Which would be typical because she always puts her personal vendettas on a much higher plane than a pure political victory. She is much more interested in settling personal scores because, as we all know, she is not REALLY a team player. Sarah Barracuda and all.
ReplyDeleteI happened to see Howard Fineman on MSNBC last night and he said that he has been in communication with his Republican contacts and that they are "furious" over Palin's involvement in the elections.

ReplyDeleteAs you so carefully pointed out the wheel turns....
A note of caution--freely given, no charge--
In your exuberant celebratory mood don't forget next time it very well may be you and your affiliates hanging upside down at the bottom of the wheel.
I say let the Republicans preside over the demise of the economy, as they have worked so hard for it and to bring about the greatest economic inequality in history.
To you and those you emulate--those who have all the money, the richest 2%, of the country (and the world) I say: let the games begin. You also have the US Supreme Court ruling to back your hand-picked political horse races.
We the people can't compete with all your money and moral rectitude. Let Caligula turn the senate into a brothel and throw us to the lions. Since
we are, to use that famous Chinese Communist term, now "superfluous."
Please convey to the masters of the universe that we are ready to accept our fate,
So what is this about Trig's parents being the Millers?
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't mean Ruffles. I am referring to TRip the prop.
BTW just to put a smile on your face, there are reports that the Republicans are royally pissed off at Sarah Palin for interfering in the primaries, because it looks like her meddling may have been what allowed the Democrats to hang onto the Senate.
ReplyDelete...................................
As most of us know, repugs have long hate lists and nasty, often unique permanant solutions for people who have pissed them off and people who they even think may have. So if I were you, Sleazy Sarah I would watch my back. Don't ride in private airplanes, go on ocean voyages or on yachting trips. Never know when someone will fall overboard or pirates will attack. Watch those trips to foreign countries, suicide bombers and terrorists are everywhere. Some GOP enemies have been known to commit suicide (with a gun in the wrong hand) then there are hunting, fishing and vehicle accidents happening all the time. Stay away from "grassy knolls"!
now for some Twilight Zone music...........
