Former White House Counsel John Dean compares Sarah Palin to his old boss, Richard Nixon, and not in the good way. Wait, there was a good way?

From Findlaw:

I don't believe that Sarah Palin has a clue what she is doing -- other than making easy money, and more of it than she ever dreamed she might, by cashing in on her celebrity. She keeps those dollars coming her way by flirting with a presidential bid, for she is very savvy, and she knows that by playing this game, she keeps herself relevant, as well as in the news. I reached this conclusion just before the Thanksgiving holiday, when the New York Times Magazine did about as favorable a profile of Palin as she has received from any mainstream news outlet that is not owned by Rupert Murdoch.

The author of the Times piece, Robert Draper, a Texas-raised freelance writer who had done a largely favorable history of the Bush II presidency, appears to have had good access to Palin. Draper's kindly look at Palin, however, actually reveals that she is no more prepared (or qualified) to run a presidential race now than she was to run her vice- presidential race two years ago. While Palin clearly has the outsized personality and ego that are necessary for a person to want to attain the highest office in the land, she is conspicuously lacking in presidential skills. If she could get the GOP nomination without a fight, or with just a little fracas, she would take it. But she has yet to show the stuff that is truly needed to win a nomination.

More importantly, too, Palin has shown -- as several Nixon biographers have mentioned to me since she entered the political arena in 2008 -- a decidedly Nixonian nature. But as one historian, who understands Nixon well, noted, Palin has "all Nixon's downsides without his upside, because she lacks his knowledge and intellect." I agree.

I strongly suggest that you click the link provided and read ALL of what John Dean wrote.  He is essentially bemoaning the dumbing down of the Presidency which allows a nitwit like Sarah Palin to believe she has a shot at the job.

He makes a lot of very valid points, including that this is a trend which began with Ronald Reagan and was dramatically accelerated by George Bush to the point that it makes the job appear so simple that even a caveman could do it.  (Which I guess is ALMOST simple enough for the Grizzled Mama to take on as well. But not quite.)

You know first Palin gets verbally spanked for comparing herself to Ronald Reagan, and now she is compared unfavorably to Richard "Tricky Dick" Nixon, whose left?

Warren G. Harding perhaps?

My opinion exactly. I have always said Palin won't run, she's gonna run right up to the edge of the cliff, then back down. Blaming someone or a bunch of someones when she does it. She's just gathering every last cent from the stupid tea baggers that she can before she goes away laughing at them.

Here is a damage control rehearsed response at Ohio signing today to a question that you know was pre-arranged as it was "What's her plans for 2012" - the same as what she tanked on with CNN.

She said, "I know that in the next few months, a lot of folks will start making up their minds about whether to run or not and that's how I'll kind of get a lay of the land to see what others are gonna do too. I want a supportive person if there are really good candidates in their willing to make the tough decisions, get the economy back on the right track, and really strengthen national security. And if there are good candidates out there willing to do that, whom I can put my faith in, I'll stand behind them and support them. Otherwise, I'd be willing to put myself forward in any public service."

She still sees herself as the one to pick the GOP candidate.

I still hope you all expose this lying fraud for what she is and that she ends up doing the perp walk for something she's done. Keep in mind, Tricky Dick had to resign in disgrace, also, too.

  6. wonderful article! It has been one heck of week for the truth being spoken (finally!) - we all know she isn't qualified and it is great that it's finally be published and coming from a lot of different sources (so no one but her palinbots can deny it) - now let's see the nitty-gritty truth and facts start tumbling out. Criticism is not going to be enough to stop her - we need the skeltons in her closet to come tumbling out

John Dean is a good man. He is very intelligent with a dry wit.

I remember the Watergate hearings and the appearances of all the president's men. He had the courage to speak the truth when the WH was intent on getting away with things they still do today - lie, cheat and steal (burglary is stealing, non?).

Since those days when he gave his testimony he has lived an exemplary life. (BTW yes he went to prison; one of those white collar crime places.)

I respect him for his honesty and courage.

Good article, but I do disagree with one thing Mr. Dean said. I do not believe she is doing any serious reading. I do not think she is capable of understanding serious matters as she is too wrapped up in herself. From the few parts of her new book I've read, she doesn't seem to even understand what she it writing or others are writing for her. It reads like an uneducated teenager looking through other books and putting a lot of other peoples' thoughts down with one contradicting the other.

She has gawd-awful writing and speaking styles. I don't see how what she is doing is gaining her any new fans.

Dean thinks that SP could be a viable candidate come 2016 (ha, he forgets that she won't be so "sexy" then, but whatever): "She is doing some serious reading."

Where that assumption comes from, I'm not sure. I guess he believes she actually read the books that she references in her new book?

Otherwise, great article. But Gryphen, please tell us that Palin will not, as Dean suggests, be ABLE to influence the midterms in 2012 and 2014... Hoping she'll be either incarcerated or in hiding by then (far before then!).

The biggest reason Palin should never be an American President is the FACT that the rest of the world has absolutely no respect for her whatsoever. America would become the laughing stock of the world if we elected her. Can you even imagine her at all having a conversation with any other world leader? They would blow us up just on principal for being so stupid.

Yes, to me she is actually threatening to run as much as anything else! And she absolutely acts like she's a kingmaker. What total bs. Her endorsement was a liability last time around.

It's pretty scary to have all of Nixon's negative qualities but none of his intelligence. Way bad combination - a dumb, unskilled sociopath.

The only reason GW Bush could even keep his head above water in that job was because of the hidden advisors calling his every move. I suppose SP could gather a group like that as well, but honestly - and I never thought I could say anything positive about GW - she doesn't have his humility (for lack of a better term), which allowed him to recognize that far smarter people than he needed to set the (unfortunate) strategy.

Sarah, if God forbid she ever got near the White House, is so stupid, she'd believe she could do it herself with just a little input from those around her.

I agree. If Palin's doing any serious reading it's with 15 dictionaries, a thesaurus and at least 10 people to interpret it all for her...and she still wouldn't get it. Anyone that thinks she ever read deTocqueville is lying to themselves.

She's not serious about running; she's serious about fleecing the sock-eyed flock that follows her. Plus if she can wield political power from the sidelines that's where she'll stay. Let's face it, throwing word-salad verbal grenades via FB/twitter or a ghost-flamer is a hell of a lot better than actually having to work.

Dean is right about the "dumbing down" of America starting to show with Reagan. When Ronnie walked in the door Pat Robertson was right behind him. And behind Pat were millions of religious right folks that previously barely bothered to vote. However, Ronnie and those that followed him knew how to draw the ultra conservatives in and keep them voting for decades---promise them all kinds of nonsense but never deliver. A cynical tactic if there ever was one.

Problem now is those people became disillusioned with the party standards (RINOS) and that gave way to the tea party landsharks. They've bitten a big chuck out of the side of the Republican party and used the Republican name to get into office. No one ran with a (T) next to their name. They wanted a coup.

They've also found a new beloved: Sarah Palin. She tells them what they want to hear just like the old Republicans did but they believe her over anyone. She validates their ignorance (it's OK not to be smart) and her family is an example they can take to heart. Uneducated, no desire to get educated, got rich by hard work (cough), Christian( more coughing) and trashy is the new black. What they don't know yet is that like all those Republicans before, Sarah is also taking them for a ride---just in a better looking package. For the men life has become one big hard on with Sarah and the women wish they were her. Ugh

It's going to be interesting come 2011 when these new, unsophisticated believers take what they believe is their rightful place at the DC table. Invest in popcorn.

Who are you kidding? She's going to run. You're giving her too much credit when you say she can't win. She thinks she will win. That's clear. This is the same lady who thinks that 40 million people voted for her, that, essentially, for the first time in American history people chose to vote based solely on the vice president and not the president, and she has surrounded herself with people who reinforce that...

Sarah isn't organized enough to run, she isn't well informed, and if she runs, she'll run behind facebook and twitters, never ever meeting the press. Or, is Sarah going to hold out long enough so that her endorsement (and the Tea Party) will go with her choice. What appointed office is Sarah looking at if a Republican wins?

Sarah Palin has a child's mind trapped in a woman's body. Right now the body is good, the face has been appropriately botoxed. I only wonder why she hasn'gt considered contacts lens, except as sophomoric as she is, she probably believes glasses make her look smart and authoriitative.

I haven't seen any evidence that she can read. I don't think that she is literate beyond Twitter and email and it appears that others handle at least a portion of both for her.

We do have evidence that she can write (on index cards and the back of her hand). I think that she transcribes what others say (in a sentence or two or three) and then teaches herself to repeat that back, hence her lack of any sort of understanding or critical thinking about any issue.

I could easily see her trying a run because she is that foolish, but there is no evidence to suggest she really has the numbers to bring it home for the likes of Karl Rove and his cronies.

    Best couple of sentences:
There has been a pattern in recent history that goes as follows: We elect a conspicuously-able president and he does not magically cure all the nation's ills (for instance, Bill Clinton). Then, we elect a new president (for instance, George W. Bush) who is not so able, and who not only fails to solve all the problems before him, but also creates new problems. What no one seems to notice, in this pattern, is that the able presidents spend most of their time cleaning up the mess of their predecessors who were not so able. Thus, in dumbing the office down, we are creating a legacy of increasing the unsolved problems that call for presidential attention.

I still take issue with the idea that Sarah Palin is "savvy." That suggests that she is consciously making decisions to work the system to her advantage. I think she is remarkably shameless in what she is willing to do and what lows she is willing to stoop to. She is incredibly predictable and relentless, like an animal that relies on a kill or be killed instinct. She just does whatever is in her immediate best interest at any given moment. Her "charm" and "savvy" are the behaviors that she always employed to get what she wants. It's not clear to me she knows why they work, she just knows that they work--like a manipulative little girl who gets what she wants, but isn't really conscious or mature enough to understand what she is doing. (The reports that she is highly resistant to taking advice from others supports this observation.)
It also can't be stated strongly enough how much the press and other media have enabled her. She does not need to be savvy to work them to her advantage. They are, with few exceptions, willing and enthusiastic supporters at her beck and call.

I am glad to hear Dean acknowledge that the Republicans have intentionally dumbed down their Presidential candidates. After Reagan the "acting" President came Bush I and his Duhbya trial balloon Dan Quayle.

Quayle gave the party a good zero point for the dumbest hand puppet they could put in the WH and still mamage to make them look intelliget.
Actually Quayle was too dumb and so was Duybya so Duhyba needed to have a powerful savy puppet master like Chaney to pull all the strings that were actually attached to something. Bush seemed to finally be begining to catch on to that about 6 years in.

Then McCain, fifth from the dumbest at the Naval Academy, who like Duhbya got into a great school as a legacy not as an actually qualified candidate.

I bet a lot o fthe gray beards pooped in their pants when they heard Sarah. She is way below the zero line of tolerable, controlable wooden headed puppet.

To attack the President of the country at a time when the USA needs to close ranks and stand together to consolidate the enormous strides his (President Obama’s) intelligent and respectful approach has achieved in building bridges, when her party’s period in government bombed them, Spankin’ Sarah Palin comes across as a pitifully inadequate anachronism from the times of the Far West.”

If they let her hang around, she could draw off enough of the radical teabaggers to cost the R's the next election. But if they expose her as the fraud that she is, thinking people are going to wonder why they didn't get this news out sooner. They are also going to wonder why McCain pickled her as his running mate in the last election. There isn't much of a way to get rid of her that will keep her slime off the Republicans. The only way I can see is to give her lots of money to not run in exchange for keeping her bad stuff out of the news. Because exposing her will expose the whole sorry Republican Party.

Anon@353, I think that is dead-on. She has a deep, pathological need to be center stage, all the time. She has the magical ability to create her own reality, which as you say is whatever suits her purposes right that second. I do think she has some inherent charisma/charm, in particular as an attractive female, that she learned -- my guess is, very young -- to use to her advantage. So maybe give her credit for some innate animal magnetism or something. But I agree, certainly not smart, and not politically savvy either. The fact that she is imploding so spectacularly proves this. She might be able to parlay the celebrity and the demagoguery into big bucks, but we should all be immensely thankful that she doesn't have half a brain in her head, because if she did she'd be really dangerous.

Rick, my sense is, that game has been afoot for a while. Any Republican with half a brain (and there are some) must have recognized her as a massive liability pretty quickly after the nomination. People in high places must know enough to bring her down. I think they're trying to have it both ways: not alienate the pee-brains by going after her too hard, at the same time make sure she doesn't get too close to the pee-rublican nomination. It's going to be an interesting couple of years.

$P certainly will not spend one dime to fund her own campaign, and its not likely she'll spend anything that is donated by her supporters,if she can wiggle out of it.

That said, unless some enamored/crazy male with very, very deep pockets promises to fund the entire campaign, while purchasing $P's clothes, beautician skills, make-up artist etc. don't expect her to even dip her toe in, the election campaign, that is;>)

I believe her glasses are to help correct the fact that she is cross-eyed. References to that malady arose during the 2008 campaign and apparently earlier pictures (20 years or so ago)of her show the one eye drifting. I noticed it during one of her close ups during a speech.

It appeared there was not detectable correction in her lenses, so I wondered why she wore them.

It appears she attempted to watch the Movie "John Adams" but couldn't quite grasp its intent and refused to follow up with a book about Abigail or President Adams. The very thought that she thinks she is their intellectual equivalent is just too creepy.

Please let this woman fall off the face of the Earth.

5:57 p.m. is correct. I have a "wonk eye" so I know it when I see it. I have terrible eyesight, worse now than when I was a child.

I read somewhere on line that she uses the glasses to hide bags/circles but that could be pure speculation.
    (sorry no link)

No offense to my fellow "wonk eye" sufferers.

Regarding Piper being home schooled, maybe there is hope for her because it looks like the Alaskan school system failed Todd, Sarah, Track, Bristol and Willow.

Attention Sarah’s prayer Warriors, pray that Sarah’s dad or Sarah is not Piper’s home school teacher, we need to break the cycle!

We know what happened to Sarah and her girls. We do not need another underage pregnant Palin!

"Sarah Palin’s # 2 bestseller ranking is a legitimate as Bristol Palin’s vote totals on Dancing with the Stars. This is yet another fraud being perpetrated by The Great Pretender in an attempt to fool the American people into believing that she should be viewed on par with Barack Obama. Palin may be able to buy herself on to the bestseller list, but America has not and never will buy Palin as anything more than what she is."

Palin has dropped on Amazon.com. She can’t break the top 20 books, she is at number 25. Number 26 is the Kardashian’s book. Palin is in the skank section of Amazon's best sellers.

  63. $owah Palin tweeted that her book is second on the New York Times Bestseller List.

I looked. It was not there. I looked at the different categories.

GW Bush's book is number one (go figure) on one NYT list; she claimed to be number two (how fitting) next to him.

I looked. It was not there.

I must assume I am in an alternate universe or Mrs. Sarah Palin is the Biggest Liar that has ever lived.

Palin used up her allotment of high school friends appointing them to positions they weren't qualified for in the Alaskan state government. Who is still around her, supporting her, a member of her current staff? None of them.

Gryphen, the Presidency requires a huge staff which means the President has to trust them. Palin is far too paranoid to even be able to have a staff around her now that is capable of handling the incoming requests and the number of complaints voiced during the recent campaigns was proof of the same. Many people who she said she would endorse, said she would campaign for, when they tried to contact her they were unable to get an answer. Worse yet, many were told that she would be there to endorse them or campaign for them on specific dates only to have her turn around and change her mind without giving any reason. You can't run a campaign like that and she's scared to death to hire anyone because she's afraid that what she is or isn't doing will become known in the media. Well, Sarah, all potential presidents have to take that chance. If you're unable to even gather a staff around you that you can trust to run a campaign, how do you think you could ever gather an even larger staff as President? Do you think the President just blows everyone off if they don't feel like handling a trip or a meeting that has been set up for weeks? No, not if he wants to be taken seriously.

Sarah wants to do this her way and it won't work. Her constant sniping at the press, the President, and anyone else who dares to criticize her is getting really old and is magnifying her infantile, petty behavior. She looks anything but Presidential.

Sarah is actively campaigning now via Facebook and is gaining on average 3,000 new "friends" per day. She's seeking these people out with her posts.

However, it really doesn't mean a damn thing in the large scope of things. President Obama does NOT communicate via Facebook, however, there are notes posted there from his speeches for those who choose to follow him in this manner. Sarah gains approximately 3k per day while President Obama is gaining approximately 30k per day. I've been tracking this for the past few weeks ever since someone was bragging about how during the time he took to write a post about Palin, she had gained 500 new friends. I checked his figures, they were off by about 450 people. But I did the same for President Obama and he did gain 500 people during the time I wrote a post about his accomplishments. Since 1 P.M. on 12/3 Palin has gain 2k new friends on FB and President Obama has gained 22.5k new friends. This may not mean anything for President Obama but if Facebook continues to be Palin's primary way of communication, it speaks volumes and it's not good news.

Palin is NOT as popular as everyone would like to think she is. Remember, 120 million people voted in the last election.

I'm not sure what Dean means by "nixonian." Does he mean she's secretive, paranoid, keeps a close inner circle, has an enemies list and leans toward corruption? Or is he using the word as a political definition, which actually means moderate republican?

The Palins are thuggish, and that's how they behave politically, which is not an asset. The Bushes were thugs too, but they were ivy league thugs, with far reaching political ties and that makes a huge difference.

Politicians like the Bushes (excluding George JR, perhaps), Cheney, Newt, Nixon, the Clintons, etc., are chess players. They are capable of an actual strategy. Sarah Palin is not capable of that, at all. She operates much more off the cuff and out of instinct, a little bit like Reagan did, without the people skills and political deftness of Reagan. She's not at all a team player, and in that regard may be like Nixon.

So it's a bad combination. She's got an independent, roguish, mean streak, and yet she's pretty stupid at the same time. If you're dumb like Dubya, you have to learn to Play For The Team. If you don't want to do that, if you want to go your own way and make more enemies than allies, then you'd better be some kind of mastermind like Nixon, or you're toast. (And we all know she's not a mastermind.)

So where does that leave her? Not capable of going anywhere on her own merits, apparently. If hypothetically she did make it to high office, which is completely impossible btw, she would be a puppet like Bush Jr, with a Cheney in the background running things.

So this is all nonsense, but I guess it's fun to discuss, the will she or won't she run thing. Especially to the media, politics is boring, so anyone who livens it up is going to get 24/7 coverage. And coverage, is all Sarah really wants.

Mr Dean, it's going to take a whole lot of plastic surgery for Sarah Palin to still be relevant in 2016. Without it she'll be dumped by her rabid white male base for the next pretty thing that Rupert Murdoch will trot out for propoganda purposes.

Given the Koch Brothers money and access to Doctors it's viable she can still look half decent in 6 years. What happens though after her 10th face lift and her belly button can be found on her rather broad and manly chin?

AARRGGHH!! $arah is such a robot - every time she's asked about 2012, she uses the phrase "lay of the land" somewhere in her response. EVERY TIME. If she is not the Empress With No Clothes, I don't know who is. A Palin Presidency would equal a Puppet Presidency with a bunch of crazy, neo-con puppetmasters behind the curtain at 1600.

I disagree with Lady Rose to a point. These negative op-Ed pieces from known quantites (as opposed to our beloved pajama-clad bloggers) are preparing the public mentally for a closer examination of less savory parts of Palin's history . A -gate story (babygate, dairygate... Pick your favorite) will not bring down America's sweetheart by itself. The general public most likely to view her favorably must hear more and more rumblings about her, enough to start thinking that maybe something is amiss with our Wasilla Miss. Once that's accomplished, people may be more open to listening to the story without reflexively dismissing it.
