Is John McCain a homophobe?

So now that the Pentagon has published their study which demonstrates that the repeal of DADT will NOT dramatically effect, or endanger the ability of the military to perform their duties, you would think that John McCain, who has been dragging his heels about DADT ostensibly awaiting the results of this study, would have no choice but to acquiesce and agree to move forward.

Yeah fat chance!

This is his latest statement on the issue according to the Huffington Post:

In addition to my concerns about what questions were not asked by this survey and considered in this report, I'm troubled by the fact that this report only represents the input of 28 percent of the force who received the questionnaire, including completely leaving out a numerous members of the military in combat areas. That's only six percent of the force at large. I find it hard to view that as a fully representative sample set.

Number one, who gives a shit if the military is not ready to accept the idea of gays serving openly?  They were not ready to accept African Americans or women either.  The military is not often on the cutting edge of social change, but that does not mean it should not take place.

Number two, who does NOT see this as another delaying tactic?  If the Pentagon did another, more expansive study, and it came back as positive for the repeal, what would McCain ask for then?

"Well have you conducted a survey asking our enemies how they would feel about being shot by a gay dude?  They might have a real problem having their purely heterosexual life ended by a flaming gay bullet.  Have we considered that?"

At this point the entire argument is ludicrous.  And it makes me believe that John McCain has not been completely full of shit this entire time.

Was John McCain ALWAYS against the repeal of DADT?  Well that is certainly the message that I am getting.  He pretended to be open minded to attract support from the independent voters until he ran out of wriggle room and now it appears as if the homophobic son-of-a-bitch is about to start screaming "Get those faggots off of my lawn!"

What's more he is not alone in that ALL of the Senate Republicans vowed to block the repeal.

So I think we can stop assuming that the GOP is simply made up of Americans just like us, but that are perhaps slightly more conservative.  Instead we learn that they are completely terrified of any social change, and resist en masse the idea of openly accepting anybody who is not like them. (Which is especially bizarre considering how many Republicans have been outed as closeted gays.)

And it does not appear that the Republican point of view will change any time soon since they are raising their children to be just as hateful and closed minded as they are.  (Case in point Willow Palin's homophobic slur directed at an acquaintance on Facebook.)

My opinion right now is "Fuck the Republicans!" Well at least the Republican politicians, who are too cowardly to stand up to this kind of backward thinking, and to accept the idea that ALL Americans deserve the right to serve their country WITHOUT having to live in fear that somebody will learn of their sexual orientation and force them out of their job, and shame them in front of their fellow soldiers.

It is time for the Democrats to push the repeal of DADT through, for the good of the military, for the good of the country, and for the good of teenagers right now struggling to understand their sexual identities and looking toward our political leaders for acceptance.

And hey, if YOU are a Republican and my lumping you together with the closed minded members of your party pisses you off, do something!  Send a letter to your Senator!  Tell them that not ALL Republicans are against gays serving openly in the military.  Go ahead, PROVE ME WRONG!

If you can convince your Republican Senator to vote FOR the repeal of DADT, you are completely welcome to come back here and rub it in my face.  I will gladly post your comment, and eat crow ALL DAY LONG!

I can't stand JM. He was so freakin obnoxious
during the election, with his stupid "I know
where Bin Laden is and I'll tell you if you
elect me, otherwise, stuff it" et al BS. I never
noticed him before the election, and I've
    despised him ever since.

John McCain is a nasty little weasel. I can't believe there was a time (many years ago) that I thought he was an honorable man. They could poll every man woman and child in the military, and he'd still block DADT. I don't know if he's a homophobe, but I do know he's a pandering to the far right piece of shit. He sold his soul....if he ever had one.

It wouldn't do any good for any Kansan to call their current Senators, Brownback and Roberts. They never listen to anyone except the Republican leadership and wealthy donors. Period.

Brownback will soon be Governor, paired with odious Kobach as Sec. of State meaning we will get anti-immigrant and anti-gay from the top down.

I will go one pace further than you, Gryphen: any Republican who deems him or herself a Christian, better get right with Christ and accept all people. This is the season you all are supposed to be worshiping and honoring His birth. Why not do the right thing, the compassionate thing, the Christ-like thing and call every Republican Senator and Representative in your region and demand they allow DADT to be repealed. Maybe they don't vote for it, but they sure as heck shouldn't stand in its way.

John sure likes to hang out with Lindsey Graham a lot. There have been rumors about Lindsey for a long time (not that it matters to me), but it sure seems odd for John to go around raising heck on this issue when he prefers to spend time with men.

Just for the record, I made the comment about Lindsey Graham earlier and want to be fair here.

Yes, he's never been married, but says he is not gay (though he is never linked to any woman). That's okay but he has always joined McCain in in his support of the Defense of Marriage Act and now with the opposition to DADT. They really are best buddies (McCain is also best buddies with Joe Lieberman).

He was orphaned at 21, joined the military which allowed him to go to college near home so he could look after his younger sister after their parents' deaths. He later adopted his sister (who is now his sister-daughter).

I don't care what Lindsey's personal life is, but I do care that he seems to condemn others who might be alleged to be gay if they are serving in the military and have similar track records (never married, no women lovers). That's what I dislike - because of him and McCain, people in the military will suffer even if they are not gay (and certainly if they are).

Our national security is not weakend by people who are willing to sacrifice their lives to fight for this country, but can't because of who they may love. It is threatened by jackasses like McCain and the other lowlife scumbag politicians who think the gays blood isn't red enough to spill for our nation.

They can all kiss my fat white ass. BTW, how many of these homophobic freaks have served in the military besides walnuts? Most of them ran the other way and hid behind their mommies apron when the draft came calling.

I'll take a gay soldier over any rat-bastard repulican politician to protect my American rights anytime, anywhere.

John McCain has NEVER been an honorable man, he's just had the benefit of the press and his ghostwriters spinning his 'greatness'. He has single-handedly destroyed hundreds of lives by his actions. He's a disgrace to the nation, his father and his grandfather. He is scum. And having foisted Palin and her ilk on this nation he is lower than scum, he is excrement.

Mullen makes strong case for Don't Ask Don't Tell repeal

ADMIRAL MIKE MULLEN: Thank you, Mr. Chairman, Sen. McCain and distinguished members of this committee.

My personal views on this issue remain unchanged. I am convinced that repeal of the law governing Don't Ask, Don't Tell is the right thing to do. Back in February, when I testified to this sentiment, I also said that I believed the men and women of the Armed Forces could accommodate such a change. But I did not know it for a fact. Now, I do.

And so what was my personal opinion is now my professional opinion. Repeal of the law will not prove an unacceptable risk to military readiness. Unit cohesion will not suffer if our units are well-led. And families will not encourage their loved ones to leave the service in droves.

I do not discount for a moment the findings in the Johnson-Hamm survey which indicate resistance to repeal by those in the combat arms and irregular warfare communities. I do not find these concerns trivial or inconsequential. Nor do I believe we can afford to ignore them. Given that this reluctance arises from the ranks of the very troops upon which much of the burden of these wars has fallen, we would do well to pay heed and to move forward in a deliberate and measured manner.

Whatever risk there may be to repeal of this law, it is greatly mitigated by the thorough implementation plan included in the study, the time to carry out that plan, and effective, inspirational leadership.

These are the things I know for a fact. These are the things the study tells us. Now let me tell you what I believe.

I believe our troops and their families are ready for this. Most of them already believe they serve or have served alongside gays and lesbians. And knowing matters a lot. Those who said they knew they were serving with a gay or lesbian were consistently more positive in their assessment of the impact of repeal across all dimensions – cohesion, effectiveness, retention, even privacy concerns.

Our families feel the same. Most of our spouses know at least one gay or lesbian and very few of them believe repeal of the law would have any effect on family readiness.

This tracks with my personal experience. I’ve been serving with gays and lesbians my whole career. I went to war with them aboard a destroyer off the coast of Vietnam. I knew they were there. They knew I knew it. And what’s more, nearly everyone in the crew knew it. We never missed a mission, never failed to deliver ordnance on target. Readiness was not impaired. What mattered most, what made us a crew, was teamwork and focus on our combat mission.

The report also takes on some quaint stereotypes, including that gay men "behave in a stereotypically effeminate manner" and that "gay service members would behave as sexual predators." Those stereotypes, the report concludes, "are exaggerated and not consistent with the reported experiences of many service members."

The report reflects a remarkable cultural shift in the way gays and lesbians are perceived by their fellow citizens in and out of uniform. But its primary significance is political: Advocates of repeal in the Senate still don't have the votes necessary to thwart a Republican filibuster, and the report allows converts to the cause to point to its conclusions as a reason to vote for abolishing "don't ask, don't tell." Alas, the ranks of converts are unlikely to include the increasingly cranky Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who is unwilling to be educated out of his opposition to repeal.

With the Democratic majority in the Senate set to shrink next year, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) must make repeal a priority. When he makes the case, the Pentagon report will provide him with chapter and verse.

When the study came out on Nov. 30, concluding that repeal would carry "low" risks for any measure of military effectiveness, McCain said he needed to question the officers who actually command troops—which (with all due respect) neither Gates nor Mullen directly does—especially the service chiefs, including the commandant of the Marine Corps (who had already spoken out against repeal).

In persisting with this charade of bigotry disguised as prudence, McCain sidesteps the fact that the repeal of DADT has publicly been endorsed by his very own favorite officer, Gen. David Petraeus—who has been the commander of both the wars, in Iraq and Afghanistan, that U.S. troops have been fighting lately.

Really, senator, what more is there to say?

McCain dismissed Gates' claim that repealing the military's ban on openly gay and lesbian service members would have little or no effect on military readiness in an interview with NBC News yesterday by suggesting that Gates doesn't really know what ending Don't Ask, Don't Tell will mean for fighters on the ground. McCain, who continues to be opposed to repealing DADT, stated that Gates was not an objective expert on the matter because he's "a political appointee who's never been in the military."

In truth, Gates served in the Air Force as a second lieutenant for two years starting in 1967. (That was the same year McCain, a Navy pilot, was injured in a fire aboard the aircraft carrier Forrestal in the coastal waters off Vietnam.)

McCain spokesperson Brooke Buchanan told TPM that McCain knows that Gates served in the armed forces and "simply misspoke" when asked about DADT by NBC News.

There is always this "we are the macho party" subtext going on with these people. I think it is far more operative than "fiscal conservative".

    ReplyDelete
  19. Anonymous8:25 AM

During his first round of questioning, McCain quizzed Gates on why larger numbers of combat troops predicted a negative impact from repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Gates told him that combat troops are generally young, between 18 and 25, and have limited military experience in which they haven't even served with women. The time they have served, he said, has been a difficult time -- one on the front lines of war.

"I couldn't disagree more," McCain shot back. "If they're mature enough to fight and die, they're mature enough" to form an opinion on who they want to serve with. "I'm speaking from personal experience," he said.

Gates noted that those combat troops who had served with a gay colleague were much more open to the idea of repeal.

McCain has said over the years that he would support repeal if the top military brass support it.

(Not that I don't think the Dems are NOT scum, mind you - I have lost my respect for them when they took over in 2006, and have not shown ANY balls whatsoever - especially since 2008, when they had the majority in both houses (albeit a slim one), and could have done SOOO much for the American people - but NOOOOO - they had to bend over and kiss a$$ to the TeaPublicans, knowing full well that they would do everything in their power to undermine our President and the American people.

I don't know if McCain is a homophobe but I do know that he's an old fart who fails to realize that the world is passing him by.

Young people today have grown up without a lot of prejudices that their parents were exposed to. It's pretty certain that they have gone to school with gays, people of color, people with disabilities, children of immigrants and a lot of other folks that their parents were not around.

To most of them, these "differences" don't mean anything. Their friends, peers, fellow students, neighbors, etc are just people. Not conditions. Or minorities. Or "others." Just people.

Senator McCain, the times have changed and clearly you haven't. Time to keep your archaic opinions to your sorry old self and let a new generation of leaders chart the future.

Example: when I first heard him saying he wanted to see more polling and reports from the military, he said it is so that: "...I can feel certain about this issue."

This butthole still thinks he won the Presidential election!

Just like the MINORITY Republicans have acted as if they are the majority mandated congress, for the last four years.

I will never forgive McCain for creating the monster we now know as Sarah Palin. He has done enough damage to this country already and he has forfeited the right to have an opinion about anything.

It is completely absurd that, in the midst of two wars, we should be losing valuable members of the military because of who they choose to sleep with. How many qualified and critical language, medical and technical personnel have we lost or who never joined in the first place because of this policy?

I have no doubt that service members who grew up in predominantly white parts of the country are uncomfortable serving with people of color, but we are certainly not going back to segregated troops. They will learn to deal with it just as they learn to deal with everything else associated with being in the military.

It's long past time to get rid of this obsolete, and morally wrong, policy.

  37. I'm sure John McCain, as long as he has been involved in politics, understands very well statistical sampling. After all, politicians as they run for office, live & die by polling numbers. He knows very well that a sample of 1500 people can provide an accurate reflection of the opinions of the entire U.S. if the sample is truly randomized, especially if stratified and then randomized. When you see a poll with +/- degree of error, that simply reflects the sample size - a larger size sample involves a lower confidence interval (the +/-).

Sorry for the boring details, but it really irks me when politicians manipulate numbers to suit themselves. McCain is dancing so hard to maintain DADT that he has lowered himself to arguments that are beyond ridiculous to make his claims and everyone involved in the decision making process knows it. Unfortunately, the average person hearing him will not.

Someone very smart said the other day that DADT will be repealed. Maybe not right now, but in the near future.
Rabid homophobia is apparently very common among Republicans, since many of them are closeted gays apparently. At least they keep coming "out".
However, people like McCain will die soon and the younger people coming up in the ranks will not tolerate the discrimination and hatred that spews from this vile man.
He never fought on the ground. He flew (and crashed) 5 planes before being shot down. He was a jet jockey - he dropped bombs on civilians in villages. He was not a combat soldier. He was never in true combat - he was flying high and obviously crashing pretty much everything he touched.
In his Annapolis Class of 1958, he graduated 894th out of 899 students.
In 1992, McCain was joined by his wife Cindy, as well as Doug Cole and Wes Gullett. At one point Cindy playfully twirled his hair and said "You're getting a little thin up there". McCain's face reddened and he responded "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c*nt". (He claims he was tired that day).
Yes this IS the real McCain. A washed up, angry, very nasty old man who never ever deserved the advantages he was given.
    May he rest in peace.

  41. I really doubt that McCain is either a homophobe or has Alzheimer's. I can't imagine any office environment (including U.S. Senate) without openly gay personnel. I think I read somewhere that he's fine with the gays on his staff.

However, he suffers from a similar lack of self-awareness as Palin; it doesn't occur to him when he claims "believe me, I know from experience," that what happened to him was 50+ years ago!

His curse is that he's never gotten over his 2008 defeat, and his palpable loathing of President Obama has (and will) only get worse over time.

You can imagine Obama passing McCain in the hallway & saying, "Such a nice day, John," and McCain's truthful answer would be a huff, snarl & contradiction.

"McCain's face reddened and he responded "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c*nt". (He claims he was tired that day)."

I'd feel bad, if it was someone else. Cindy
slept with that fool when he was still
married to his ugly and crippled 1st wife,
who was super duper hot when he married
her, then she got all smashed up by a car
and was really a boner killer.

Plus, her faux outrage at Obama defunding
the military, and totally taking money
away from her son, because Obama didn't
agree with part of the bill--ignoring
the fact Walnuts did the same thing for
some other thing he disagreed with. IOKIYAR

I like to think John McCain is bi-curious and it eats at him.

It makes me wonder what the heck he is afraid of, would something perhaps come out about him that he is afraid of? That someone could now speak out without punitive measures?

Sheesh, it makes me wonder what someone may have on McCain, ie personally involved, or someone who has something on McCain ie other dirt, that is forcing McCain to keep up this nonsense with reguard to DADT, in order to cover their ass against a coming storm.

  46. For those asking why McCain is doing this, you should check out my website and my discussion of projection. The more vehemently someone objects to something (usually meaning a personal characteristic), the more likely it is their own (unconscious) projection of what they like least about themself.

At this point, I really want Meghan McCain to ZIP IT for good. As a gay man, I am tired of her trying to deflect attention away from her pathetic, homophobic father. She needs to step up, fix her f***ed up family or shut up about it. The McCains = not the First Family but certainly the Worst Family!

John McCain is a horrible, hateful old homophobe. He needs to get out of politics because he is a dangerous poison on human rights.
