Arizona lawmaker introduces bill in the hopes it will keep President Obama from being reelected.

From Mother Jones:

Last week, Arizona state Rep. Judy Burges, a Republican, introduced a bill that would bar presidential candidates who do not prove they were born in the United States from appearing on the ballot in the Grand Canyon state. And state Rep. Chad Campbell, the top Democrat in the GOP-controlled Arizona House of Representatives, tells Mother Jones that the bill is likely to pass. It was introduced with 25 co-sponsors in the House and 16 co-sponsors in the state Senate; the measure needs 31 votes in the House and 16 in the Senate for approval. "Will it matter?" asks Campbell. "We've started a tradition here of passing legislation that is political grandstanding or that sets up litigation."

But the birthers—those ardent Obama foes who believe the president was not born in Hawaii and, thus, is not constitutionally qualified serve as president—see this measure as more than symbolic. For them, it's part of a well-orchestrated campaign to deny Obama reelection.

It's not that Obama necessarily requires Arizona's 10 electoral votes to win reelection in 2012. In 2008, he lost there to John McCain, Arizona's senior senator (though in 2012, Obama could make a play for the state). More important, Burges' bill—which would establish a strict standard for proving natural-born citizenship (which the birthers presume Obama could not meet)—is a model for other states, and similar efforts are under way in Pennsylvania, Missouri, Montana, Georgia, and Texas. (Obama won Pennsylvania in 2008 and lost Missouri by less than 4,000 votes.) Arizona may be where this birther ball gets rolling.

Jesus no wonder Sarah Palin is shuffling her kids off to Arizona and helping to set up a ground base there.

(Picture removed at request of source.)
.

So first Thomas Van Flein hightails it to Arizona to work for a teabagging Congressman as his "political advisor. "

Then Bristol defies her custody agreement, kidnaps her son and runs off to practice abstinence with her pipeline working boy-toy in the same state.

Later we come to find out that Sarah is also renting a humongous McMansion there as well.

And just now we learn that another teabagging Arizona Representative is trying to pass a  law to make it impossible for Barack Obama to get on the ballot, because they realize that the only possible way they have of beating Obama is by somehow managing to stack the deck against him.

You know, much like Sarah Palin I also do not believe in coincidences.

At least not in this case.

I don't understand the point of the AZ law or how it's supposedly going to keep him from getting on the ballot considering the fact that HE WAS BORN IN HAWAII!!!!!

McCain was not born in the U.S. He was born in Panama. There are also rumors that Willard Romney (real name) was born in Mexico. And of course we all suspect that Sarah was born in Canada across the border from where Chuckie lived in order to get that socialist free Canadian health care.

Yet another pointless waste of time and money.

The requirements for POTUS are clear, including the requirements for citizenship. Obama has clearly met them, or he would not have been sworn into office - and the Supreme Court has already said - by refusing to hear "the case" - that this is a non-issue.

I'm so sick of watching posturing politicians pontificate on points they purport to ponder yet plainly are being purposefully partisian.

This is another big bridge to nowhere--for angry old white people to shout about. Barack Obama was a state senator, a U.S. senator and now President. No one questioned his credentials when he was a state senator and a U.S. Senator. Get real, birthers, ye old farts.

  7. Do you suppose John McCain is planning on retiring before this term is out? And do you suppose that the governor plans on appointing Sarah to that Senate seat? I can't imagine any other reason to set up camp there -- except that there's something in the works that will allow her to further her rather unrealistic political goals.

This is beyond sick and scary and we need to reveal the truth of Palin's sordid past and get her out of any position of influence.

In an effort to solve questions about her past I came across the name of Daniel R. Jackson who may or may not be linked to the person who posted the series of clues about Todd & the murder of a prostitute, Sarah convincing the Palmer DA not to prosecute him for child rape, Trooper Wooten not arresting him for domestic violence, and Sarah's mom & BFF trying to get his wife (girlfriend?) to move... Then the info about the trust fund and babies...?

If this is an innocent person and their name was incorrectly linked to this, I apologize, and am only trying to figure this puzzle out.

Does this name mean anything to anyone in the know?

Very interesting point from a labor and delivery nurse. The requirements for the original long form would be essentially impossible even for hospital births. But even more a friend of mine had all of her kids at home. No birth certificate, no doctor. A mid-wife came by later but essentially it as here and two women friends. So none of her kids could be President?

Also. Small point but reading about this bill apparently even in the presence of similar documentation the State official can exclude a candidate unless "He" feels it fulfills the requirement.

How nice for AZ. I suspect it gets challenged in court and tossed out.

But it's more of the whole state's rights strategy. Win the Civil War they lost the last time

Ok, I hear what you all are saying but what you have to realize is that these people (birthers) don't ACCEPT the birth certificate that Pres. Obama has presented. They also have found fresh evidence (they believe) of conspiracy in the current Gov. of Hawaii's recent statement that he can't find the birth certificate.

Very interesting, per msnbc.com: “Democratic lawmakers in Hawaii introduced a bill this week that would allow anybody to obtain Obama's personal documents, an effort aimed to silence so-called ‘birthers’ and close a projected $800 million budget deficit over the next two years,” The New York Daily News reports. “The legislation would reverse a privacy law that bars the release birth records to anybody without a tangible interest, like family members.”

When it gets to the federal court level, and it will, it is unconstitutional to write laws that apply to a single group of people much less a single person. It's that equal protection thing.

It will be interesting to see if Arizona can discuss, debate, and pass the law and never mention Obama as the target of the law, so that when it goes to court they can claim it is not aimed at just one person.

Assuming the Supremes uphold it, then there would be the law suits that would follow Arizona refusing to place the nominee of a major party for the position of POUTS on the ballot. So the Supremes would then have to take a stand on whether the legally binding "certificate of birth" issued by every state is in fact legally binding as to proof of birth and by extension proof of citizenship.

It would make a hell of a mess if the Supremes ruled that state issued certificates of birth are not binding, it would effect tens of thousands of employees, especially in the military and government, especially in positions that require security checks. And everybody who has a state issued driver’s license also too.

There could be a somewhat amusing complication for the Tee Peers as invalidating state level certification that proves citizenship, that power would of necessity have to fall on the Federal Government, thus taking away from the states one of their remaining acts of state level sovereignty that is legally biding all other states.

Most Americans really have three birth certificates, if not four or more.

The one held in the states' Departments of Record is the so called long form. No body ever sees that one except the physicians that fill them out and a few employees of the various Departments of Record.

Privacy laws and the need to insure the safety of those documents means they are not available to the public.

The Department of Record issues the legally binding birth certificate like the one that we have seen a couple of hundred times lately.

Also, the hospital, mid wife etc. will create a nice document for the parents as a keepsake.
Since those are often lost or destroyed, they are not legally binding.
And if a person is born in a hospital or delivered by an authorized medical person there will be a record of the birth in the hospital's records, and the physician's records. These are also not legally binding certificates of birth.

Remember, about McCain, he was born to American parents, it doesn't matter where he was born, he is American. So even if Obama was not born in the US, his mother was American, that makes Obama American.

When my kids were born, there were several kinds of birth certificates. The one that the hospital gives to the new mom has the baby's hand print and foot print on it, along with a picture of the hospital, and plenty of scrolls and banners. It is a keepsake, not a legal document.

The real official birth certificate is filed with our county clerk. I will never get to see it, and no one else can either. What I can get are photocopies which require the embossed seal of the county clerk to be legitimate and legal.

The truth is that anyone can get a copy of my birth certificate. All they have to do is fill out a form and pay a fee. A while ago, you had to go to the county clerk's office, take a number, and wait to fill out the forms, and then wait some more for the photocopies. Much of that can be done on-line, and they mail the document.

This is also the case for death certificates, marriage and divorce documents, an amazing invasion of privacy. But, the original documents will always be locked up and the only documents available to the public are copies with the appropriate seal.

Nope, they can not read in Arizona. They're too ignorant to be allowed to vote. Their electoral votes should be disqualified altogether.

I'm reading up on psychopathology. I've got some excerpts from some people who helped a certain Polish psychologist translate his book about the study of evil in politics. It looks like a very important book, perhaps a breakthrough in understanding the human condition (Political Ponerology):

There are a number of traits that we find in psychopaths: An obvious trait is the complete lack of conscience. They lack any sense of remorse or empathy with others. They can be extremely charming and are experts at using talk to charm and hypnotize their prey. They are also irresponsible. Nothing is ever their fault; someone else or the world at large is always to blame for all of their 'problems' or their mistakes. Martha Stout, in her book The Sociopath Next Door, identifies what she calls the pity ploy. Psychopaths use pity to manipulate. They convince you to give them one more chance, and to not tell anyone about what they have done. So another trait - and a very important one - is their ability to control the flow of information.

They are also incapable of deep emotions.
Our whole emotional life is a mystery to them, while at the same time providing a tremendous tool for them to manipulate us.

They also seem to have no real conception of past or future, living entirely for their immediate needs and desires. Because of the barren quality of their inner life, they are often seeking new thrills, anything from feeling the power of manipulating others to engaging in illegal activities simply for the rush of adrenaline.

They are experts in knowing how to push our buttons, to use our emotions against us. But beyond that, they even seem to have some sort of hypnotic power over us.

Psychopaths exhibit unusual inter-hemispheric distribution of processing resources, have difficulty in appreciating the subtle meanings and nuances of language such as proverbs, metaphors, and so forth, have poor olfactory discrimination, possibly because of orbito-frontal dysfunction, and may have what appears to be a sub-clinical form of thought disorder characterized by a lack of cohesion and coherence in speech. All of these cognitive and affective anomalies cannot be explained by any of the other models of psychopathy, and they can be detected with brain scans.

They hope that by adding birther bills to elimination of the 14th Amendment (naturally-born citizens), the only people able to rise to power will be those who have direct descent from the Founding Fathers.

Since the Mormon Church is the collector and collator of all such records, Romney and his immediate forebears will miraculously be translocated to American hospitals for birth, and then back down to Mexico with the entire polygamous crew.

The Romney family denounced their citizenship. They NEVER applied to get it back.

So wonder who really owns the house and what Sugar Daddy old white man is paying for the Witch Sarah to live there?

Is Willow still farmed out to some other family? Wonder if Trig's real mother is taking care of him cause we know Sarah has never taken care of that little baby. Is Bristle recupating there at this mansion in her pregnant state or has she had the new baby yet?

The rumor is that Bristol is having an affair with Gino, a pipe layer and also another boy in the band in Alaska.

Rather than keeping Obama off the ballots, this will more likely put this silly 'not born in the US' meme away for good.

He was born in the US; it has been documented even though Birthers refuse to accept that. Officials of Hawaii have confirmed with through records as well as anecdotially. It's only crazy Birthers who refuse to accept that.

As president, it is truly beneath his concerns to spend time trying to satisfy them. Such efforts would only pander to the crazies.

However, if this bill becomes law, all candidates, not just Obama, would have to satisfy its demands, so he wouldn't be singled out. Acceptable documentation would have to be specified; there's no doubt he could produce what other candidates could produce. They officially can't refuse to accept official documentation from other states without exposing themselves for what they are.

They are shooting themselves in the feet.

  81. May I point out that there are many Arizonans like me, who are registered as Democrats and independents. We resent being grouped with tea Party crazies and neo-nazi thugs. We are in the minority here, but we are doing our very best to rid ourselves of these people who want to destroy our ability to earn a living and educate our children, not to mention enjoy any other rights and privileges.

Being invaded by the dysfunctional family from hell( Wasilla,AK)is NOT in our best interests!

I think what is most scary about this is that it seems whoever is 'in charge' can decide whether or not the documents given by candidates are enough proof of 'natural' citizenship (which isn't clearly defined in the Constitution, so there's an opening for stupid like this anyway). This way, they can keep out anyone they don't like. Interesting strategy, and only one you would find in a state where the majority of its conservative residents screech (probably on a daily basis) about the "wasteful spending of the government," yet probably back the legislature's wasting time on this, since it will hopefully be negated by the Supreme Court, if and when it gets that far.

Anyone could still 'write-in' Obama's name if he wasn't listed on the ballot.

And I would be sick beyond comprehension if AZ Gov Brewer appointed sarah to Gabby Gifford's seat (should her injuries prevent her from finishing her term).

Besides, I believe the law says the husband would be appointed before any others.

Hilary Clinton wanted to be President. Bill want her to be President. Do you think if the Clintons had a suspicion about President Obama's citizenship, they would not have pursued it?

If my memory serves me correctly, it was a Hillary staffer who filed the first court challenge regarding Obama's citizenship.

Natural born means born in the US. In McCain's case they ruled he was natch born because his parents were citizens and he was born on a US military base, allegedly, in Panama

Even if Obama were born in Kenya, which I don't believe for a second, his mother was an undisputed American. That makes him American anyway. What's the issue? McCain wasn't born in an American state either. Wasn't he born in Guam?

Well, this to me is another coincidence about the shootings in Arizona of trying to take out a democrat lawmaker. All these Palin people move down there, Bristol buys a house for someone to live in and then Sarah moving in a mansion there.

I still believe there is a connection in those shootings that relate to Sarah and that really should make a lot of people stop and put her under a microscope.

She better be walking a very fine line because if not, something is going to come out and bite her in the ass. Sarah sure is carrying around a lot of baggage.

If I request one, I get something from the state of Texas that looks a heck of a lot like what Hawaii has shown for Obama. Can my children not be president now?

    NEWS FLASH

Here is the connection to establishing Palin residence in Az:

Sarah Palin sets up residence in Az.

    McCain retires.

Gov Jan Brewer hand picks his replacement with Az resident.

Just so happens Palin is a resident of Az.

Sarah Palin is a Senator without having to compete for that position.

Why Az? Sarah would be too embarassed if she ran for an Alaskan senate seat and lost. Right now Palin is not popular in Alaska.

McCain, Brewer and Palin are all in on this.

This is McCain's revenge and payback to President Obama.

  95. Let's keep in mind, the question the birthers have is whether the President is a "natural born citizen", which of course, he is, having been born in the US in 1961. His mother being from the US makes him a citizen, but being born here makes him "natural born". That's the critical part, that they're in denial about. And BTW, Romney's dad was born in Mexico, and I remember there was some discussion about George Romney's qualification to be President, but I was a small child. It doesn't seem to be a big deal according to wikipedia. Course he was white. Mitt Romney was born in Michigan.

This is crazy and as stupid as it is, I hope everyone writes to their congressmen and lets him or her know how ridiculous it is, a complete and utter waste of time that our congress is even spending a minute on something as inane as this. The intent of the law always was to prevent an adult, who had spent much of his life overseas, from becoming president. Fine... accept that THAT might be a good idea for the sake of this conversation.

But most people don't realize that the birth certificate of a legally adopted child is identical to that of a "natural born" child. I have a friend who adopted a child from the former Soviet Republic of Georgia and then, after being told she could "never" get pregnant, did - twice. Her three children's birth certificates (Texas) are identical, except for the child's name. (I asked her.) There is NO indication that the first child is not "natural born." If that boy runs for president in 40 years, unless someone in the family "in the know" would say, "He was adopted from Soviet Georgia," it would never come to light.

There is also a growing (albeit crazy IMHO) group in the US who are having unattended home births. No dr, no midwife, just mom and dad. Some extreme women are doing their births themselves, with no dad present. Who can ever say where those children REALLY come from? Unattended home birth or stolen in Mexico?

After a few days, they take the baby into a health department, state that they had an unattended home birth and are quietly given... a form to fill out which entitles them to a birth certificate. No "certificate of live birth" actually exists for those children, either. Should they be denied the right to run for the presidency?

In addition, birth certificates vary state to state and decade to decade. My birth certificate from the 1950s lists my parents' marital status and does list the hospital of my birth. My children's (same state) from the 1980s has none of this information.

This whole thing is unbelievably dumb.

    P.S.

Want to make stupid laws like this then maybe it's time that Arizona stops getting any Federal money. You want to act like you're not a part of this country then maybe you should think about what it means to be a part of this country and not you own little fiefdom.

Frankly quite a few states would love to split the money that goes to the bigoted fiefdom that is Arizona and let's see that state do without Federal money. I'm sure they won't mind going back to dirt roads, child labor, and keeping them thar women barefoot and pregnant.

As a child I saw an American walk on the moon, who thought we'd attempt to become the model of societal regression.
