Sarah Palin and the Teabagger's mythology of Ronald Reagan does not match the facts.

From Yahoo News:

It is interesting to contemplate what Palin and the tea party would have thought about Reagan while he was president. On what would have been Reagan's 100th birthday, his legacy is generally thought to be consistent with the Palin and the tea party's vision of lower levels of spending and taxes.

What would Palin and the tea party have said when Reagan oversaw the largest personal tax increase in the history of the country? In 1982, Reagan signed into law The Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act, which raised taxes by nearly 1 percent of the national GDP. While the act came with some strings attached, most notably the promise to cut spending by three times the amount of the tax increase, in retrospect, the cuts never really happened, and it remains, to many experts, the largest tax increase in the history of the country.

Reagan signed into law a package that included the highest corporate tax rate increase in history in 1986. Reagan, actually, raised taxes in six of his eight years in office.

As for shrinking government, Reagan did no such thing. The number of employees in the federal government grew from 2.8 million to 3 million during his presidency. Reagan certainly was no deficit hawk, either, as the national debt grew from $700 billion to $3 trillion during his time in office.

So, what would Palin and the tea party have said about Reagan while he was president? Would they still be espousing his values and calling him a fiscal conservative? Would the tea party been in favor of a president who was in the White House, signing multiple tax increases into law, some of which were the largest of their kind in American history?

What the Right Wing, Sarah Palin, Fox News, and the Teabaggers have done is to cast the Reagan image in gold, placed it on their altar as a deity of conservatism, and now spend their time genuflecting to their perfected image of this man which does not relate in any way to who he really was.

In truth, much like Atheists understand religion far better than Christians, the left understands the REAL Ronald Reagan much better than do those on the Right.

Of course those of us on the Left are also not trying desperately to tie our names to a false idol, like those on the Right are doing when it comes to Reagan. And speaking of Christianity didn't the Bible say something about doing such a thing  in Exodus 20:3?

I was a young adult just starting my career during the Reagan years. I do NOT remember those years with fond memories. Reagan has become a fictitious, larger than life symbol. The Teabaggers sure as hell couldn't use any of the Bush's as their symbol, so they had to reach way back and dust off old Ronnie. It's sort of like after a person dies, they suddenly become a saint - even if everyone knew they were an awful nasty person when alive.

What do you think of Sarah Palin's comments about Egypt?

She's right on the money. 12%

I respect her opinion, but she's wrong. 2%

Palin probably does not even know where Egypt is on the map. 86%

...Now two weeks into this, here comes Palin, who was such a strong leader when she was governor of Alaska that she left the job on the dead run when she saw there was money to be made in the other 49 states, and a way down there to mount a presidential campaign she apparently thinks she could win.

So she doesn't just take swings at President Obama, sounding like somebody who gets all of her political information by listening to the radio. She also questions the motives of the people in the street, the ones whose courage will make Egypt a better place when this is all over, whoever is in charge next month, or next fall.

I always had this theory that Reagan sold his sold to the devil.

Reagan: I want to be world famous. I'd even give up my soul.
Devil: Well, Im only the devil. Even I can't make YOU a famous actor. As an actor, you suck.
Reagan: Can't you give me anything in exchange for my soul?
Devil: How about a career in politics? You can use your mediocre acting skills there.
    Reagan: It's a deal.
Observations: Devil prevented Reagan from being killed during assassination attempt.
Reagan's nose kept growing from his lies. That's why he kept having the tip of his nose removed for supposed cancer surgery.
Reagan also had major horse riding accident where his skull was removed - didn't kill him.

Reagan lived to a ripe old age despite years and years of Alzheimer's - devil kept him alive, but he didn't promise him in what condition he would let him live.
When Reagan retired, supporters bought him a house to which he could retire. Little problem: house address number was 666.

    I rest my case.

I was around for both the Reagan governorship of California and his presidency. I am SO tired of people making him out to be some kind of god. He was a crappy governor and a crappy president. And he needs to be held accountable for refusing to recognize the AIDS epidemic. The guy was a dick. AND, as we lefties keep pointing out OVER and OVER, he was NOT a fiscal conservative. But we all know that Sarah and the Tea Party are too fucking stupid to grasp basic facts and basic history. Dumbshits.

    Ronald Reagan, Terrorist!

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/2/6/17818/51775

Since today marks the 100th birthday of the Dark Lord (aka Ronald Reagan), I figured I would take the time to set the record straight on his legacy and help my fellow liberals/leftists/progressives challenge contemporary Reagan hagiography. It goes without saying that Reagan's presidency was a watershed time in American history and politics, but those on the right (with their enablers in the current American media) have it wrong. Reagan did preside over the end of the Cold War anymore than he oversaw great economic growth, for example. While I will spare the readers a laundry list of how the right (and by extension, the American people) view Reagan, I do want to focus on four areas that I find very important.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/2/6/15715/69752

Yep, you read that right. Governor Ronald Reagan - responsible for the largest tax increase in the history of California or any other state at the time and proving that government could be a "strong, effective force." And all this from the man who famously said "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"

Wake up conservatives, even your famed idol knew your "conservative values" were bullshit.

    Screw Reagan

I stumbled on this impressive effort to chronicle what is for many of us the real legacy of Ronald Reagan by a young film school student, Joah Colby-Milbrath. In the narration he says his mom is a lesbian, and she selected his name at the Names Project. His moms must be proud.

For those of us who remember, his legacy was to eliminate tax deductions for the middle class and poor.

Before Regan, the interest we paid on credit cards and car payments was deductible. These were eliminated under Regan...like now the Republicans are trying to eliminate the mortgage interest deduction.

These deduction helped the middle class with their tax burden. What Republicans never get rid of are deductions for the rich or subsidies for wealthy industries.

    Read it and weep Sarah!

Obama meets foreign policy test with the crisis in Egypt

"It's 3 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep. But there's a phone in the White House and it's ringing. Something's happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call. Whether it's someone who already knows the world's leaders, knows the military, someone tested and ready to lead in a dangerous world. It's 3 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep. Who do you want answering the phone?"

What an amazing turn of events. Who could have predicted, when then-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton aired that commercial against then-Sen. Barack Obama in 2008, that the White House's first 3 a.m. call would be about Egypt? That the person making that call would be Clinton as secretary of state? And the person answering it would be Obama as president?

And who could have predicted that, in our lifetime, we would see a wave of democracy sweep the Middle East and topple Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's long-time despotic ruler, from power.

The situation in Egypt is the first foreign policy crisis faced by Obama and Clinton; they inherited Iraq and Afghanistan. It hasn't been easy. It's required a delicate balancing act. But the Obama administration has handled it with just the right amount of public patience and private pressure.

The Iran Contra affair got Reagan elected. George H.W. Bush was a CIA operative who ran much of the operations. Iran Contra? They promised to sell weapons to Iran in exchange for delaying the release of the hostages until after the election.

Had they been released a month ot 2 before the election Carter may have won.

So we sold WMD's to the same country who held many Americans hostage for months.

Then the day of Reagan's inauguration, the hostages were miraculously released. There are entire books on this topic.

I too was a young adult and paid little attention to politics at the time, worrying more about rent, food, work. But I do recall thinking "an actor???" and started loosing faith in our system of government. Then when Nancy bought the china for the White House when the rest of us were suffering through a recession, I knew the Reagans were no good. Add that with both of their troubled childhoods, lack of a strong educational foundation, and poor relations with failed marriages and children--yeah, they are a lot like the paylins. I am not bashing any one coming from similar circumstances, we all have our skeletons, but we don't want the Average Joe running the country. The teabaggers do and that is what is so troubling. We need to rise to the occasion and as Obama said, we need to "outdo" everyone else on all levels to stay where we are, let alone get ahead. What is really sad, is that the teabaggers have to go all the way back to Reagan for someone to praise, since good o'l W is way too toxic and Nixon a joke. How sad for the repugs, that is all they have. Both Carter and Clinton will go down in history for being great men for the work then have continued to do outside their time in office. I am proud to be a democrat.

Sarah Palin: CO Springs speech canceled due to personal attacks -- or is that just trendy excuse?

The "personal attacks" rationale seems wacky. After all, such reactions are absolutely standard for a figure as polarizing as Palin. If she was really that cowed by "negative rhetoric," she'd eschew this whole running-for-president thing for which she's clearly sowing the seeds in favor of laying low in an Alaskan dugout with a weapon at her side waiting for the next moose to amble past.

So what's really going on? As the Washington Post points out, "the cancellation of the speaking engagement frees Palin to attend the NBC/Politico Republican presidential primary debate at the Reagan Presidential Library in California, also scheduled for May 2" -- and while neither Palin nor other potential or announced Republican presidential candidates have confirmed that they'll be there, it opens the option for her.

Those in charge with the big cash who want to turn the country into a Xtian-Corporate-driven collection of mindless, fearful serfs are prepping Missy to become the next St. Ronnie. They've been recreating the Reagan Myth for years, and have started with GWB as well. Sarah is a much an actor as Reagan, and she revels in chomping the scenery. GWB not so much--he could only take the "fronting-the-folksiness" act so far.

Constantly comparing Noodnick of the North with the Patron Saint of Presidents gives the cult members confidence that she has the leadership skills and comforting down-home charm to lead the Free World. Only thing is, they're also trying to convince the rest of us through repetition and comparison. Sorry, but the majority of the country can actually think for themselves, thank you. That's why we have to remain vigilant, just in case Missy "decides" to run for POTUS. You think the Xtreme RW isn't closely watching the protests in Cairo? Imagine what would happen here if she were "appointed," à la Georgie.

BTW, I'm sure everyone knows by now that HuffPo has been acquired by AOL. In my experience, AOL is the go-to ISP for those who aren't that Internet savvy--the older demographic so attracted to SP. Just check the comments on any story connected with Sarah on AOL now. Watch out for even more ridiculous pushing of the Palin™ Brand on HuffPo in the future, I'm afraid...

As a 2012 Candidate Sarah Palin Promises to Hide From the Media

She suggests that she doesn’t care what people say about her, but as her Blood Libel video proved, Sarah Palin cares very much what people say about her. Palin claims to have thick skin, but she has made it clear through her two books of personal vendettas against anyone she feels has ever wronged her (even unintentionally) that she stores up these grudges and nurses them with the special care of someone who expects reverence from the people and can’t tolerate dissent.

Palin then buttresses her plan to continue banging her head against a brick wall by claiming that more people agree with her than don’t, in spite of the polls which show that the majority of Americans have a negative feeling about Palin and do not want her to be anywhere near the White House. She ignores reality here and also manages to divide Americans once again, by suggesting that anyone who doesn’t agree with her values is not a hard working individual with ethics and if they don’t agree with her, they must not value liberty.

The politics of division took Palin far, so it’s no wonder that she continues down this road. But what she doesn’t understand, and what no one seems to be able to get through to her, is that national elections are not the same as local elections. What worked for her in Wasilla and Alaska won’t work for her on the national stage. Americans don’t elect people who run on negativity like Palin does. It’s just that simple. And since she continues to slam more than half of the population, Americans don’t trust her.

How Ronald Reagan Gutted The Middle Class With Free Trade

Free trade has decimated manufacturing and the middle class in our country. The problem today is free trade isn’t just affecting blue collar workers, it is affecting many white collar workers also, from computer engineers to corporate lawyers.

While many people are starting to come into agreement that free trade has done more harm than good for our country, others have been successful in affixing “free trade” to the Clinton Administration. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

The starting point for NAFTA actually began with President Ronald Regan. In 1979, while officially declaring his candidacy for President, Ronald Reagan proposes a “North American Agreement” which he said, will produce “a North American continent in which the goods and people of the three countries will cross boundaries more freely.”

Ronald Reagan Won the Gulf War and Other Myths as Told by Dick Cheney

Cheney fully engaged in the Reagan mythology that gives Reagan credit for singularly ending the Cold War. Cheney takes a shot at liberals for not supporting the Reagan military buildup. Cheney said that The Reagan military buildup achieved the victory in spite of the constant hectoring of the left – that military build up that assured our victory in the Cold War. Cheney expanded the Reagan myth by giving Ronald Reagan credit for the US victory in the Gulf War.

Cheney closes with an uplifting note, saying that thank you is a good place to start with Reagan, as he was an idealist. Reagan inspired affection that goes to only the truly good- kindness, decency marked his life. We should be thankful he came along when this nation and all the world needed him most.

Whew. That was a lot different than transcribing while live blogging Palin’s garbled speech. Cheney’s speech actually managed to discuss Reagan, which put it light years ahead of Palin’s speech in content, but his tone was also a marked difference from the screeching hate we have grown accustomed to.

Things have gotten so bad among the Right that Dick Cheney appeared civil and comforting tonight simply because he comported himself with proper decorum as the circumstances warranted and he honored the man he was supposed to honor instead of using this as an opportunity to spread more senseless hate poisoned red meat to his base.

...The one thing she didn’t count on, however, was that the GOP old guard might not continue with their behind the scenes support of her in the face of her falling poll numbers. They know she’s unelectable in a general election. The GOP deals with problems like Sarah Palin behind closed doors, with whisper campaigns and subtle cues that she is no longer protected by the big daddies running the show. If they want her gone, she can expect the media to suddenly start reporting things about her that will make her wish she was back in 2009, when she had it easy. The GOP needed her and used her in 2010, because someone like Palin can be a great fund-raiser and get out the vote motivator in regional and state elections. But someone as divisive as Palin is poison in a general election.

It’s amazing that Palin doesn’t know this. She has thrown away a career that could have taken her to the White House based on her charm alone, had she not shown herself to be so unwilling to study and learn about issues she is obviously uninformed about. Luckily for America, she insisted on being front and center in the last year and half and as America got to know the real Sarah Palin, they realized that they didn’t like her very much. She has nothing but bitter criticism of the current administration, which reads more like sour grapes of a bad loser than legitimate criticism, primarily because she never offers a solution.

Sarah Palin is America’s back seat driver who has managed for several years to humiliat1e and cow the press while she issues pronouncements from on high and then whines about how they are perceived. The fact that she plans to keep on doing the same thing if she runs for President is both shameful for this country and a comfort. While she makes fools of the press and shows how low our standards are, at the same time, she is making herself irrelevant with each misstep.

The Mask of A False God: The Real Record of Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan raised taxes 11 times, nearly tripled the federal budget deficit, gave amnesty to 3 million undocumented immigrants and their families, increased the size of the federal government, and presided over an unemployment increase after cutting taxes for the rich but raising them for the middle class and the poor. Republicans and conservative groups are hard-pressed to admit to those aspects of the Reagan presidency, but regardless their efforts to rewrite history, the records are there for all to see.

During the Reagan presidency, he was responsible for helping to destroy unions for big business and is directly responsible for mining disasters in West Virginia where he assisted Don Blankenship of Massey Energy to prevent unions from protecting coal miners. Despite historical truth that union membership helped create the middle class in America starting after the Second World War, Republicans are continuing their narrative that unions are responsible for the economic woes the country is facing today.

Back before Reagan won the presidency, our country was poised to invest heavily in renewable energy to break the foreign oil reliance. I majored in econ with a natural resources bent, hoping to help that bright future along. Then came the underhanded "keep the hostages until after the election" shit from the RNC and I saw my whole future evaporate along with renewable energy.
Instead what we got was government subsidies for oil, gas, and coal. We are still beholden to foreign oil and no matter how much we drill here, we always will be. Conservation, renewables such as wind, solar, and wave, all that was LOST when that shit head Reagan was made president.
Think of what our country would be like today if he had been defeated, if the projects that were to be funded had come to be? I literally weep some days when I see the filth in the air, water, and land. THIS is what Reagan and his ilk (Cheney, Bush, Koch, et al) have wrought. They have turned our beautiful country in to a shit hole. I often wonder if any of these men, and some women, have children or even care what kind of earth they are inheriting. My guess is they think they are above the fray. They are not. What happens to we underlings is happening to them.

    Well, the first troll arrives!

Listen up, little troll. Those talking points are not gonna fly here. We do our homework, we educate ourselves, we have boots on the ground to know that this president has not only brought the country back from the brink of complete collapse, but the economy is GROWING.

He's secured more positive relationships with all our allies, he's fought for the 'little people' that Sarah so callously tries to co-opt, he's an outstanding father and husband (as opposed to the lame mother Sarah is and the lame husband that Todd appears to now have been), his children are fine examples of what good upbringing, education, support, love and kindness can foster in children, as opposed to her passle of kids and their attitudes and behaviours.

So, yeah, Barack Hussein Obama will go down in history as one of the most brilliant visionaries this country has EVER seen, so read it and weep, baby, read it and weep.

Oh, and by the way, you'll just have to fuss for another four years, because that is how much longer he will be elected by a LANDSLIDE to lead this country proudly into the 21st Century of success and growth. Kinda bugs you, huh?

The mythology is just that a myth.

Which like many things, sells well with the help of the media.

It is important to note that Sarah Palin's model of governing with her high school buddies seems to be based on Reagan's 'kitchen cabinet'.

    From Wikipedia on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitchen_Cabinet:

"Ronald Reagan had a kitchen cabinet of allies and friends from California who advised him during his terms. This group of ten to twelve rich businessmen were all strong proponents of the free enterprise system. His wealthy, conservative California backers included: Alfred Bloomingdale, Earl Brian, William French Smith, Charles Wick, auto dealer Holmes Tuttle, beer baron Joseph Coors, steel magnate and philanthropist Earle Jorgensen, and about four to six others. Coors was the major funder and most active participant. He also funded many think tanks and policy institutes at about this time, including the Heritage Foundation.[citation needed]

The difference is that 'Palin's high school cabinet' was not full of high powered business executives.

This is about using people's emotions about themselves and about Christianity to tie it to the idea of war and aggression, so as to have a support base for our endless war and bullying in the world.

It's well and good for us to laugh at their inconsistencies behind the scenes, but it's important to understand the bigger picture of what's happening. What they're after. What their methods are and why they work.

When Teabaggers brag about RR, I keep this in mind:

Cuts to entitlements, lower taxes, a robust economy, a budget surplus rather than a deficit...the person they're really praising is...Bill Clinton! Who John Boehner et al tried to derail.

I know you won't convince this dumbasses of the Tea Party that Clinton actually embodies all the things they hate, and that's alright. I have a hard enough time remembering Clinton fondly...I don't need a bunch of dipshits to support him, too. Probably, this list will end up describing Barack Obama's presidency, too, and it will disappoint me a bit, especially if the kangaroo court of John "I can't memorize a paragraph" Roberts declares the healthcare act unconstitutional, which I'm 99.99 percent sure they will. (Because they're partisan asshats, not because it's really unconstitutional.) But it will make me feel better about Barack to think of all the idiots who DON'T support him. What's the saying, the enemy of my enemy is my friend? Hmmm...

Not knowing the history of one's religion, as in not knowing about Martin Luther, does not necessarily demonstrate a lack of knowledge about one's religious beliefs. The core of the Christian belief system is not the history of the church, but nice try.

If atheists know about the history of the various religions, more power to them. The whole point is a living, breathing philosophy as it applies to one's life. Christians do not all aspire to teach in Divinity school.

I always say atheists think they are smarter than the rest of us fools. I wonder if the Pew poll asked people about the religion itself, rather than questions about famous Christians like Mother Theresa. Confusing the heart of the issue shows the disconnect, in itself.

Gryphen, you are a good guy but you are very angry about religion and you never fail to swipe at it. It's your blog, obviously.

  41. In 1980, Inflation was high, I had a 16% mortgage & Carter was saying "we have to be satisfied with less".

RR was elected. 4 years later all was improving; 8 yrs later all was well. Cold War WON by RR.
Minor errors along the way, but
RR is #3 in all time presidents: GW,AL,RR.
FDR is Far down the list as a handholder and comfort president, but no problem solver.
