Who has more political sex appeal? The Grizzled Mama or The Obama Mama?

From the Examiner:

In the case of these two women, it almost upsets me to compare them because as far as I'm concerned, Sarah Palin is a fame junkie with no genuine concern for America. Lets take a closer look at their marriages and family life. Though Republicans will shamelessly defend her, Sarah Palin's family has produced an unwed pregnant, overweight child and a marriage that begs the question, how dare the Palin's pretend they are the ideal American family? Sarah and her husband seem disinterested in one another. It goes without saying that all families have their share of problems but we don't go around pointing fingers of superiority as the Palins so notoriously do towards the Obamas.

The Obamas on the other hand, always give the impression of a couple in love with healthy, happy children, of healthy weight, with an attitude that is so appealing they come off as American Royalty similar to the Kennedys. Michelle Obama is the perfect First Lady, there is nothing anyone can say bad about her, unless you're a racist and secretly discredit her because she is black which I suspect is what's behind much of the commotion on those conservatives who openly despise the Obamas. (Please click the link at the top to read the entire article.)

So the contest is between an angry emasculating harpy who treats her children and husband like nothing more than political props to further her out of control ego-centric ambitions and a woman who demonstrates a nurturing personality and cares, not only for her own children, but for the nation's children as well.

Boy, that IS a toughy!

I think Michelle Obama is such a perfect first lady. She has style, she is a wonderful mother and wife and is well educated. She just carries herself so well. I just cannot believe the horrible things people say about her. I agree that it has to be racism because that is the only explanation for people who call her arrogant. They just can't get past the caricature of a black woman that is stuck in their tiny little minds. It is obvious they have never spent any time reading about her or listening to her or even watching her. She just seems like someone you would love to have as a friend.
I have never seen or heard of her mocking or deriding anyone in public like SP does. Michelle Obama is a lovely woman married to a great man and history will look very kindly upon them.

Every time I watch Mrs. Obama, I am struck by her beauty and grace. She has empathy and compassion for people and is not afraid to display her emotion. She is by far more educated than Palin, but raising her family comes before her career. In other words, Palin doesn't hold a candle to Mrs. Obama.

As a straight woman, I can't really comment on their sex appeal, but in the style category, Michelle Obama beats the "What Not to Wear" fashion disaster that is Sarah Palin hands down. I swear to God, Sarah cannot put a fucking outfit together to save her life. That $150K spent by the DNC was worth every penny, and made Sarah actually look quite attractive. Nowadays it's clear Sarah rolls out of bed, clips a dead thing on her hair, and puts together outfits that look like a 5 year old would pick out. The sparkly flag pins and tacky jewelry top off her look.

On the other hand, Michelle's hair, makeup, and clothes are spectacular...she has great taste and always looks fantastic. That red McQueen gown she wore to the most recent state dinner was incredible.

And don't you stupid Palinbots even go there...Sarah has plenty of dough to hire herself a stylist.

The difference is that elusive something called "class". The First Lady has it; Sarah Palin has none at all. It has nothing to do with money, power, fame or prestige; it's about fineness of spirit, about character, integrity, dignity. The Obama's have class, both of them, and I'm proud of the way their warmth and humor embrace all.

    More from the article:

"Time and time again, Sarah Palin is criticized for her lack of articulate speech and goofy pseudo political ideals- creationism and her anti-abortion stance for example. We've all seen the photos of Sarah Palin prancing around in her bikini in her earlier beauty pageant days.

Then there is Michelle Obama, an elegant woman, an Ivy League educated First lady whose new agenda is to promote healthier diets among Americans. While obesity in America has been an epidemic for most of my life, diet, it seems is the perfect agenda for Mrs. Obama seeing how appearance and health are so intertwined with self-image, particularly among those in the media. A few weeks back, Sarah Palin dared criticized Michelle for having the audacity to tell Americans what to eat, as if this somehow suggested Michelle was using her political power as further government control."

  9. I'm one of your troll's old ladies, so the sex appeal part isn't a feature for me. As the old cliche goes, it's apples and oranges. They aren't alike enough to be compared to each other.

Mrs. Obama is an intelligent, well brought up, well mannered, well educated person. She isn't publicly fantasizing about some political future. She doesn't publicly exhibit any deep ignorance of history or current events.

Mrs. Palin may have been born with some natural intelligence, but her rough raising and lack of education combined with a mean-spirited personality have resulted in a rather unappealing public persona.

These two women can only be fairly compared with others of their own similar backgrounds, but certainly not with each other.

  11. Now, here's a story from the NE I do hope is not true: Chelsea Clinton wants an annulment; the six month marriage is over. That is sad. As to Michelle Obama and Sarah, there is absolutely no comparison. Michelle came from a middle class family and educated herself in some very good schools and is a lawyer. She held an important job before she became First Lady. Their children were seldom seen before, during and after the election. They were taken care of by Michelle's mother who lives with them. The Obama girls go to school and take part in school activities. As normal as any two young ladies can be, considering that their father is the POTUS. I even forget their names sometimes. Not so with the Palins. Sarah went to a number of colleges before she finally got a simple degree and then, did what with it? Ran for town council and then for mayor. Of a small town. Then governor. None of these jobs she did herself and, in her spare time, she had four children. None of whom has shown any great promise, unless you count being an unwed mother and reality show contestant. And being involved in vandalism and other such crimes. I would bet that the Obama girls will grown up to be well-educated, responsible members of society.

I think that one reason some conservatives, including Palin, attack MO is because she, like her husband, don't fit the stereotypes of black people that have been pushed since I was a little black girl growing up in 1950s America. The reality that there are decent, intelligent, and accomplished blacks that do not fit the stereotypes is difficult for them to face, so they must engage in constant denigration of the president and his wife to preserve their own sense of superiority. Palin and those like her have grown up in an increasingly diverse America but haven't been exposed to others outside their own little circle of friends and find it hard to see any similarities between themselves and others who don't look like them. I would venture to say that Palin and like-minded individuals would have a problem with anyone, even other whites, who don't fit their "profile" of how they should behave and/or what they should say. This is one reason why it would be very difficult for Palin to become POTUS--she refuses to expose herself to those who differ from herself and gives the impression that she doesn't "need" them. It's her loss.

Guess it depends on ones personal definition of what is sexy. I think self confidence and self awareness, genuine warmth and lack of artifice, to be both attractive and sensual.

IMO, sexy is a label that denotes what is superficial, and culturally defined, and as a woman, I find that label not necessarily favorable.
Sarah's minions acclaim her beauty, many find her sexy. Their opinions do not match mine.

If this is a contest...it's a no brainer....and no, the "no-brain" would not be getting my vote. Michelle Obama gets my vote for this one, and my admiration for her personal evolution.

And the Bots are hitting The Examiner article. OUCH!

The love & protectiveness both the Obama's show their children and each other is striking in comparison to Palins. The Obamma daughters have pretty much a normal childhood with school, home-life (with Grandma R there) The public "display" is very limited and seems only when other children are involved or special events.

The Palins are a parade where ever they appear, if you see one, another is surely another in orbit nearby. From Trig being hauled and handed off to who ever is in reach to Piper (Diaper) who in tow regardless of the time, place or event. Is Piper or Willow even in school now? They transfer, then
home-school, then transfer (much like a shell game). You would think Trig would be in some special ed classes for dexterity, speech, etc.

I believe the Obama family shows
a loving couple committed & dedication to "the family unit".

Whereas, Mama Palin is the star, the rest are props or supportive cast members.

When I see Mrs. Obama, I do not consider her sex appeal. Not because she isn't attractive, but because that isn't the image she projects. What makes an impact on me are her words and actions. Sex is the furthest thing from my mind when Mrs. Obama appears and I certainly think that is a good thing. I feel the same way about Laura Bush.

With Sarah Palin, I think she took the sexy librarian thing a bit too far. Now it defines her. Worse, it has degraded the facets of her mythology that do not rely on her looks. She has undermined the possibility of substance in the minds of those who wouldn't be aware she has none. Then again, perhaps that is her game. If her fans are distracted by all that sex appeal, they won't pay too much attention to her empty words and shallow actions.

Thanks for posting this. That woman pisses me of for many, many things but - the one thing that gets under my skin like nothing else is her pushing the idea that her family is The Perfect American Family with the best set of values and morals and that they are an ideal role model family for other Americans to emulate. And she has the gall to imply this when we currently have a family in the White House that is all those things Ms. QuittyPants proclaims the Palins are. I love my first family. And really, almost all of our recent first families are leaps and bounds above the Palins. They all had class. I see no class at all coming from the Palin camp

Stuff like this just goes to show the power of groupthink and emotion over reason. To most people, it's as obvious as the sky is blue that Sarah Palin is a complete phony of a person in light of what she pretends to be. Some want to believe in something so badly that they project what they want to see in their mind onto their environment, and any contradictions be damned. Her whole cult is pretty pathetic really. Everything is as it is, not as we wish it to be.

I'm pretty tired of debating about her actually, because there is no debate to being with. Yet we keep hearing, though with less frequency: is she ready to be president? here is what Sarah Palin said about such and such political issue ... Enough already. Even journalists are outwardly tiring of reporting about her just for the sake of making a (non) story. It's becoming clear on its own face to almost everybody that she's just trying to grab attention.

Though most people think she's grossly incompetent, I think many still see her as a political figure to some degree. That was never true either. For her, politics was only a backdrop, an excuse, a vehicle for her to prop up her self-esteem and be seen by others. While she may have some sort of personal ideological preference that she would like to live by, she clearly has no genuine concern for politics as serving a greater good. She's no politician. She's a narcissist with very low self-esteem. Full fucking stop.

I think the better question is this:

If you were a young, unmarried pregnant woman, with which family would you place your child?

Think carefully Bots. Palin's three older children have been involved in vandalism, property destruction, heavy drinking, premarital sex, pregnancy, and public online attacks using foul language. Did the two older kids even graduate from high school, or did they go the GED route? The rumors are that Willow has dropped out too.

For all you religious types, there is no evidence this family even attends church, or is involved, as a family, with a church.

Piper has missed much of school and she herself stated she was behind. Is a year-round campaign trail really the best place for a child under 10? Sure, a few events here and there are great experiences, but these seem to be the norm, not the exception. A child her age needs normal interaction with other children. Sarah Palin just isn't the average home-schooling mom, so don't even go there.

I won't even go into how she has ignored Trig. That is a tragedy all on its own. Any other special needs parent would use their wealth and celebrity to advocate. Not Sarah.

Frankly, I can't see any reason to even consider the Palins as adoptive parent material.

Sarah said that nothing gets by a Mama Grizzly, but it's apparent that with Palin, she has failed every time with every child.

Without question Michelle Obama is a gorgeous woman, but it is her inner beauty that radiates from her most of all. Her keen intellect, her compassion, her great sense of humor, this is what matters most.

The idea that black women have somehow not been portrayed this way in America is a massive societal failure. I think those who go after her are racists of the first order. They are people who cannot tolerate the notion that she is smarter than they are, more attractive than they are, and vastly more popular. It's jealousy, pure and simple. And the fact that she happens to be black is what I believe angers them more than anything.

Black women aren't supposed to be beautiful, gifted, successful and fortunate, and certainly not: powerful.

I have to disagree with the people who have commented that Palin has no class. She has lots of class...unfortunately, it's all stupefyingly LOW class.

Where the contrast always seems greatest to me is in how each of these women handle conflict. Despite what the Palinbots have cried about for years, the First Lady has received far more unwarranted nasty and horrible insults and threats towards her and her family than Palin ever did. Yet, she has remained above the fray, refusing to engage her attackers in a public battle. By ignoring them, she has shown them that their opinions just do not matter.

Palin, on the other hand, revels in responding to each and every perceived insult, always far out of proportion to what was actually said. And when she doesn't have enough to gnash her teeth about, she creates something.

In the future, you might want to think twice prior to posting info that can so easily be fact checked.

    Let's see,

    Mrs. Obama = Gives
    Sarah Palin = Give me

Mrs. Obama = Married loyal loving husband
Sarah Palin = Married unloyal husband

Mrs. Obama = Beautiful respectful children
Sarah Palin = Well, we know what she has

A first lady who hires 20 of her closest friends as her staff, paying them 40k-150k is not a national treasure.

    kkkkkkkkkkkk

The Alaskan government structure is a who's who of Sarah Palin's Wasilla High School BFF. So you wanna try that again? Ethic Board won't go against Palin because they were hand picked by the person they are suppose to be watching. Friends put in high places with the only qualification is that they like cows.

Palin = Alaskan and National Joke

Romanidou wrote it is about class and breeding. I agree with her. My mother believed and taught us that "class is not synonymous with money". She was he'll bent to raise her children as well bred, educated including culture and the arts despite circumstances living at or below poverty level.

The great thing about our country is everyone has the opportunity to do this. The Obamas and their parents represent this truth. People who do not help or avail themselves are prone to resent those who have or believe only rich people can.

to AKPetMom: Barbara Bush was recently quoted as saying, "I sat next to her at a dinner once, she was very pretty. She should stay in Alaska." (or something close...)

That picture does show them sitting together and SP does look very nice, and animated. (Whatever has she done to herself in the last two years?)

No one ever paid much attention to the staffing levels of other first ladies before Michelle Obama. Because they were white. As someone just pointed out, both Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush had similar staffing levels. It's the same for the president. No one noticed that other presidents had used the "terrorist fist bump" or had gone jacket-less in the White House until a black president showed up. This is a common ploy among racists and others who buy into black inferiority or innate black corruption. You can apply this standard to every aspect of how this presidency is perceived. No one blinked an eye as the deficit ballooned under Bush. No one blamed him for the economic crash that occurred in 2008. Now, suddenly, everyone is concerned about deficits and big government.

Believe me. if Bush had passed health care reform, he'd be lauded today as rivaling Jesus Christ or even Ronald Reagan.

I believe what really bugs people is that this couple has the gall to act like a president and a first lady. They violate the premier stereotype in this country: blacks are lazy, stupid, and shiftless. Now here come this upstart first family, with their intellect, Ivy League education, and delightful and precocious daughters. Race hatred is a blinding, debilitating disease that is apparently still infecting the population.

For the troll with the wrong info on Michelle:

Lelyveld said that Michelle Obama’s staff was actually no different than that of her predecessor, Laura Bush. "[W]e have exactly the same staff number as Mrs. Bush and our office organization reflects a similar staffing model, so insinuations otherwise are wrong," she said. Lelyveld said that the White House’s "personnel records indicate" that there were 24 staffers for Laura Bush at some point. We were able to verify at least 18 staffers for Laura Bush, as of June 30, 2008, via the 2008 White House staff list published in The Washington Post’s White House Watch column. Sixteen people were specifically referred to as a "first lady" staffer, and Amy Zantzinger and Dorothy Thornton served as White House social secretary and deputy social secretary, respectively. It’s possible that someone with the title of "staff assistant" was assigned to the Office of First Lady as well, as is the case with Michelle Obama’s staff.

The combined annual salaries for the 22 staffers we can specifically identify as working for Michelle Obama come to $1.6 million. For the 18 we could identify as working for Laura Bush in 2008, the total is $1.4 million.

Michelle Obama and the power of style

...Michelle Obama, on the other hand, has tapped right into the power of visual communication in the global culture. Her wardrobe is a canny calculation of high and low fashion. During the campaign, she outwitted the free-spending vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin by showing up on The Jay Leno Show in a $340 J Crew outfit. Once in the White House, she hosted a lunch attended by Nancy Reagan wearing a $40 floral Gap cardigan. And she is often photographed walking the family dog in jeans and Converse sneakers. Similarly, Samantha Cameron - who made Vanity Fair 's best-dressed list last year - favours Uniqlo jeans and Zara blazers. She, too, made a statement with accessible fashion from the start, showing up at the Conservative Party Annual Conference in October 2009 in a polka-dot dress from Marks & Spencer.

The next generation of leading ladies is already taking note. Kate Middleton appears to be dressing in an economically sensible fashion, maintaining her casual, practical style despite her soon-to-be-royal status. While nobody seems to care that the dress she chose for her engagement announcement was not designed by a Brit but by the Brazilian-born designer Daniella Issa Helayel, her preference for high-street brands has not gone unnoticed.

Miss Middleton has been spotted hunting for bargains at the discount store TK Maxx, and rifling through the sale racks at every Chelsea girl's favourite department store, Peter Jones. She even plumped for the high-street for her official engagement photos, wearing a £159 Reiss dress and a £95 silk blouse from Whistles. Like Obama, Middleton is careful to mix high fashion with affordable looks that project an accessible, everyday style: wrap dresses, skinny jeans, hunting boots, and bomber jackets.

And while Oscar de la Renta might be upset about the much-discussed State Dinner dress, the First Lady didn't show much remorse. Instead, in an appearance on Good Morning America several days after the dinner, she repeated her fashion mantra to the hostess: "Wear what you love!" she said, "That's all I can say. That's my motto."

Oh, God. As if there's anything to compare here. Palin is glorified white trash. If she belongs anywhere in the public eye, it's only on Jerry Springer.

Let's see, who was was whoring around and got pregnant before marriage?

Who raised a daughter who was whoring in high school and got pregnant?

Who has a husband who is whoring around after several years of marriage?

I believe the wife of the family whoring around does not have sex appeal, just nastiness runs in that family.

Obviously, lots of biased opinions here! Frankly, I think the Obama family does exhibit a good example of a loving family unit, but that doesn't mean that we all agree with their political views!

"Political" sex appeal???? What is the nature of this question? Sex appeal and politics have nothing to do with each other, so no one should be answering this question as such. "Class" and "sex appeal" are two entirely different things. Unfortunately, it seems our society has forgotten that somewhere along the way in the past few decades!!
