Hate Comes to Orange County. Muslim relief organization attempts to raise money for women's shelter. This is the result.

(If video does not play for you, please click here.)

This kind of hate is the result of Fox News propaganda, Sarah Palin tweets, Right Wing radio fear mongers, and an uneducated populace.

I can't help wondering if Sarah Palin would have tweeted, "Common sense & decency absent as wacko "church" allowed hate msgs spewed" in response to THESE protesters?

This is what people of an Islamic faith, in NO way connected to any acts of terrorism, are subjected to in one of the most liberal states in the union.  Imagine what it must be like for them in more conservative areas.

If this does not absolutely break your heart than I worry for your humanity.

  13. It's horrible how people treat one another. How different things could be if these people would read the Bible and honestly treat others as commanded "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Why does anyone who calls him/herself Christian think that it's in anyway okay to hate others?

Lately I've been thinking just what an awful place our world has become. And we have nowhere else to go.

Something that touched my heart recently during the recent turmoil in Egypt was when a Christian man shielded a Muslim man while he prayed. That is love.

People can disagree with one another on many issues, to include religion, but there is never any excuse for the hatred poured on the people in this video.

As far as lumping all Muslims in with terrorists, how about lumping all Christians in with the Westboro lot? An entire population of people cannot be categorized based on the actions of some.

I really respect how they were able to all hold their so heads high and carry themselves with such dignity and walk into that function so gracefully with all of that filth and trash and hate going on in such close proximity. Today on Andrew Sullivan
"Religious fundamentalism is dangerous because it cannot accept ambiguity and diversity and is therefore inherently intolerant. Such intolerance, in the name of virtue, is ruthless and uses political power to destroy what it cannot convert. It is dangerous, especially in America, because it is anti-democratic and is suspicious of 'the other,' in whatever form that 'other' might appear. To maintain itself, fundamentalism must always define 'the other' as deviant," - the late and great Peter Gomes.

I just wrote to Orange County Chamber of Commerce about this video. Explained as an Alaskan who was not effected by the economy, who's last trip to OC was 1 1/2 months long for a Christmas/Birthday vacation, that we would not be vacationing this year in OC or returning for a long time. I found the participation of the Congressmen and the council woman appalling. I also called both Congressman's D.C. offices, I explained that AK is conservative (I like to say that when talking with Republicans) financially stable economy, we travel, spend money, buy stuff. Con. Royce's office was receptive not so much at Con. Miller's office, rude and asked if I wanted my complaint passed on to the Congressman, then he hung up before I could say yes.
I say a boycott of OC is appropriate

  35. I disagree with what is going on in regards to "free speech..."

The other day, the Christian right hate group Westboro was told they have the right to their free speech, and I saw it being defended here, so I know I risk being called an idiot, but hope you will give this some serious thought.

Here, some of us are horrified as we watch what we are told is free speech, but I think there is more here and it should be defined as something other than "free speech."

In my opinion, NEITHER CASE IS FREE SPEECH. THIS IS VERBAL ABUSE & BULLYING IN THE EXTREME.

We do not allow this kind of behavior in schools. We do not allow this kind of behavior in workplaces. But somehow we have decided we allow it in public, where kids can see how it is used, and other kids are subject to it (never mind those poor parents and the courage it took to keep moving forward).

I think we need to find a way to convince those who think it is correct to help the child who is tormented in school or the woman who deals with workplace harassment that this is the same thing. I think there needs to be laws on the books which would allow those police to demand these hate-filled people leave or arrest them.

Every human being deserves the right to peacefully assemble without being subject to this kind of harassment. And yet, free hate speech prevails...

  73. Gryphen,

I am going to suggest what is happening is slander (and even libel if you read through the info below) and those of us who want to truly stop this kind of thing need to get some legal muscle behind us.

I clearly heard those people calling the Muslim people gathering there "perverts."

Here are some definitions of slander:

Slander is the spoken or transitory form of defamation of character, a legal term that refers to a falsehood presented as true which could harm the reputation of a person or entity. Slander also encompasses body gestures as in the case of sign language. If defamation of character is placed in a fixed form, as in the case of a sign, published paper, film or recording, it is considered libel. In short, slander is temporarily uttered or gesticulated, libel is published or otherwise fixed.

Slander is a tort, or civil law, meaning a civil lawsuit can be brought against someone who is accused of slander. In the United States certain facts must be established for someone to be found guilty of slander. Assuming there is proof that the defendant uttered the alleged statement, the statement must be overheard by someone other than the subject or other “privileged” parties. Slander must also clearly identify the party or entity, and the intent must be malicious.

The more people that are party to a falsehood, the greater the potential for harm to the plaintiff. For this reason, libel cases generally award more damages than cases of slander, as libel reaches a greater audience. With the advent of the Internet, many types instantly published, worldwide communications have become fodder for libel cases. Online libel is sometimes referred to as cyberlibel.

In cases like these, I think we need laws to allow the police to collect names and driver's license numbers of the people spewing slander, if the people on the other side want to prosecute, so these hateful people know they are not going to be able to continue to do this in anonymity, which is how so much of what is horrifying happens in our world.

Sorry, Gryph, but you didn't do enough research on this issue.

Here's the announcement for the event straight from the website of the sponsoring organization: "ICNA Relief is pleased to announce its 2nd annual fund raising dinner at the Yorba Linda Community Center in Yorba Linda, CA ... Attendees will benefit from inspirational lectures from Imam Siraj Wahhaj and Imam Amir Abdel Malik."

And here's the reputation of one of the two speakers: "University of California, Irvine (UCI) Chancellor Michael Drake condemned remarks endorsing terrorism made by Amir Abdel Malik Ali while the Oakland-based pro-Palestinian activist spoke on campus last week [in 2010]. Drake’s May 15 statement decried Ali’s claim to support terrorist groups who call for Israel’s destruction as a breach of UCI’s commitment to values and civility."

It is not hate to point out there are Muslim organizations in Orange County that support terrorist groups.

  81. The stupidity is breathless..

I grew up in the DEEP south with Haley Barbour in the 60's-70's, and just had the drastic bad luck to spend 6 months in Houston, Tx... Now living IN Orange county in SoCal where in 2011, it is - BY FAR - the most racist and bigoted place I've ever been - EVER.

I'll give you one example.. grocery shopping at one of the local markets back during the Healthcare debate, I was confronted at the market exit by a NYC Converted pretzel cart as a display of ALL THINGS HITLER with skinheads actively working the crowd coming out of the market... Patches, shields, pamphlets, meeting materials, gathering places, etc. all trying to convince folks that Obama was the anti-christ. Some of the deepest, ignorance and self-loathing I've witnessed in a long time.

But it's real - here in Southern California and it's REALLY starting to get on peoples nerves...

  82. Truly truly disgusting, IMHO this is America at it's worst. People like Palin, Beck & Fox News continue to foster and nurture this despicable form of abuse toward other Americans.

It is not just disheartening, it is vial. This video is by product of that vapid & vitriolic woman, Ms. Sarah Palin.

A rabbi is involved with this?! What does he want to do, round up the Muslims and send them to concentration camps?

Pure, unadulterated evil? Look in the mirror. I am embarrassed to be an American, if this is what being a "rill American" is supposed to be.

At the 4:06 point there is a screechy voice that is eerily familiar. I don't thing the Brand was in Yorba Linda, but her voice sure was.

  87. I am a Californian, Orange County is not representative of California in the least. It is a very unpleasant right wing pocket. I'm not saying there are not decent people there, but what you are seeing is why it has such a repulsive reputation.

disgusting neocon flag desecration for children

Go out of your way to befriend Muslims.
Learn about them, learn from them.
    That flag means mutual respect.
    The truth destroys Neocons.

Orange County has a lot of very wealthy people and they are very conser.a.turd. I know a few people who live in OC they aren't very nice. I am sure that not all people in OC are like those tea-haddist.

i have followed your blog since palin crawled onto the national scene. it helped to know there were others as shocked and saddened and scared when she gathered momentum. but i have never commented. this video scares the crap out of me. this behavior takes me back to the riots after MLK was murdered. i was a boy on the south side of chicago and the riots made me feel like the country was falling apart. the fact that the country overcame that moment in history is the only reason i can see this video and hope that this is just the worst of us and not representative of the country.
