If Governor Sean Parnell's pick for the Senate Judiciary Committee has his way I might be looking at a little jail time.

From ADN:

Gov. Sean Parnell's appointee for the panel that nominates state judges testified Wednesday that he would like to see Alaskans prosecuted for having sex outside of marriage.

The candidate, Don Haase of Valdez, also admitted under questioning by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee that his official resume failed to disclose his leadership role in Eagle Forum Alaska, which advocates for social conservative issues. He most recently was president of the organization, but resigned when he learned of his nomination, he said.

Haase -- pronounced "hays" -- has done electrical and mechanical design work at the trans-Alaska pipeline terminal in Valdez since 2000, first working for Veco, then for CH2M Hill. He ran for the Legislature in 2010 but came in second in the Republican primary to Rep. Eric Feige in what was nearly a three-way tie.

His resume listed such extracurricular activities as his roles in producing and starring in local plays for tourists and being a member of the Valdez Snowmachine Club. But it made no reference to the Eagle Forum Alaska. In response to questions from Sen. Joe Paskvan, D-Fairbanks, Haase said he became active in the organization about 2005, eventually taking on responsibility for its blog. "I was only president for a couple of months. I resigned as soon as I got the call that this came up," Haase said.

He said he didn't think it was important enough to merit mention in his resume. He didn't list his church membership either, he said.

One blog post on the Eagle Forum Alaska site praised efforts at criminalizing adultery in Michigan, and Paskvan asked Haase if he thought it should be a felony in Alaska.

"I don't see that that would rise to the level of a felony," Haase said.

Paskvan: "Do you believe it should be a crime?"

Haase: "Yeah, I think it's very harmful to have extramarital affairs. It's harmful to children, it's harmful to the spouse who entered a legally binding agreement to marry the person that's cheating on them."

Paskvan: "What about premarital affairs -- should that be a crime?"

Haase: "I think that would be up to the voters certainly. If it came before (the state) as a vote, I probably would vote for it ... I can see where it would be a matter for the state to be involved with because of the spread of disease and the likelihood that it would cause violence. I can see legitimate reasons to push that as a crime."

Surely this idiot is screwing with us, right?

Obviously it would be impossible to pass a law in this day and age making it illegal for two consenting adults to make the beast with two backs, regardless of whether or not one, or both, of those backs were supposed to be in a committed relationship.

Besides I thought that these Teabaggers were all freaked about instituting Sharia Law in America.  Which countries do they think still have these primitive kinds of laws on the books?  Hell even Turkey was not willing to go this far!

That is not to say that there are not places in America where old anti-adultery laws still remain on the books, such as in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Dakota, and Oklahoma. (Wha...Massachusetts?  I did not see that one coming!)

It is almost impossible to believe that there are still Cotton Mather wannabes like this Hasse guy around who believe they have the right to dictate morality to their fellow citizens. What's next, will he want to stone people who dare to work on the Sabbath?

Well that is left over Palin poodle Sean Parnell for you, dragging Alaska back to the days before the Age of Enlightenment one political appointee at a time.

I read a comment somewhere else, so I will not take credit for this, but it certainly rings true to me:

The reason the teabaggers hate Sharia law is that it is TOO liberal.

If he's speaking out against it as a criminal issue you know damn well he's hiding something.

He's probably a habitual hooker hirer with a drug problem.

What a retard. using this logic, the following will also need to be crimes:

-Sneezing in public without using a tissue.
-not washing your hands after going to the bsthroom.
-not washing your hands after touching money
-cutting in front of anyone in any sort of line
-traffic back ups (being stuck in it, causing it)

Get it? There are gazillion activities that spread germs and incite violence you asshole. Government needs not mess with whom we are dating and what we are doing with whom we are dating.
Is he working out some teenage promdateless issues??

Coming soon in your local police reports; this guy will be busted for prostitution, child molesting, or some other sex crime. People who shriek the loudest about sin and sex usually do so because they have a guilty conscience or they are trying to deflect attention from their bad behavior.

He sounds like Gingrich when yelling about Clinton. The gop should be renamed the "hop" Hypocritical Old Pharts. Why do Alaskans vote these people into office?

Every night I go to bed thinking it cannot get worse. Every morning I find myself banging my head on the table because it just got worse.

I would say Governor Parnell is the most moronic excuse of a politician out there, but that, unfortunately be a lie.

My one consolation is that this kind of law would catch mostly Republican politicians - that, and the laws against sodomy.

Whew - when are we going to hit rock bottom? Surely we are close now. Uh-oh, did I just curse us by thinking it cannot get worse?

Sigh, maybe I can get away with it because the sun is just coming up.

I am so tired of these morons railing against Sharia Law and then trying to implement it. They obviously lack self-awareness and awareness of what Sharia Law is.

I want to live in the 21st century, not the 19th. What's next, Carrie Nation with her little hatchet chopping up bars and liquor stores?

Is that why Sarah and Todd Palin wants to move to Arizona? To keep up their life style?

Single Bristol does not have anything to worry about, maybe that's why she does not want to marry her babies fathers?
Bristol can bang her brain out all night long without breaking the law. Oops, she may have already done brain damage.

I keep telling you these repubs want to take us back to the 1800's. I think they also would love to be living in the wild wild west. That way they could kill everyone who didn't agree with them or anyone they just felt like killing. Pretty sure they would also carry membership to the KKK (& be damned proud of it too!).

It will be pretty interesting to see what happens in the next couple of elections. I think that the repubs that got in this time are making some enemies (you think?).

The thing that amazes me the most is that they want small government and government to stay out of your business. The only thing they don't want gov to do is collect their taxes and leave their guns alone. Yep, they care about people - NOT!

Sad thing is the naive (dumb?) followers don't understand is that the repubs only want to be rich and get richer. They don't give a rat's ass about these people. The worst thing about it is that many of these people are using the gov to survive. Makes no sense!

This guy exemplifies exactly what I've been saying for 30 years about the "moral majority", that they are neither.

My bet is that he's willing to impose his interpretation of the bible as absolute law in this country, in defiance of how courts have interpreted the 1st amendment.

This is illustrative of the giant black hole in how these teabaggers and Fred Phelps type think.
They want small government and states /towns to be left alone by the Fed government, but are willing to impose christian-sharia laws of the Old Testament on all the rest of us.

Palin is no different. She's backed by the same simplistic, legalistic crowd of christians who judge and damn everyone by Sharia standards, and condemn all who don't measure up.

I'm so sick of dealing with this type of stupidity that I'm leaving the USA as soon as possible.

Before you know it, Kansas and Oklahoma will be forcing everyone to church at gunpoint

If God is all knowing all seeing, HE will deal with people when the time comes to meet their maker. This country can't handle the rapist or the killers and keep them in jail. They let the wallstreet crooks off with no punishment . It's just another way of keeping people down and they won't be able to get a job., because they will have a record. They will make loopholes for the rich and themselves, so the law will not apply to them. Nazis is what they look like.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anonymous7:55 AM

Obviously if this law was on the books would not be inforced uniformly across the board. For example, this dude would not end in jail for adultry but husband of the woman that he wanted to jump in bed with would.

How does this relate to Carl Gatto's law that would allow the courts to enforce any law - Sharia Law or otherwise - as long as it did not violate the constitution. His legislation does not call for upholding United States laws.

Didn't these right wing morons get the note from Sarah Palin?

"Sex out of wedlock qualifies you to be the daughter of the (possibly)Vice President, or (possibly) President, qualifies you to be a speaker for abstinence, qualifies you to go on a TV dance show and have voter fraud keep you in the competition way longer than your talent would allow, (and those committing the fraud were good Christians), qualifies you to write a book about your life, and qualifies you to make so much money off these activities you can buy a big house for cash. It also qualifies you to be a cyber bully, and to give America a big middle finger on national TV and take trips to exotic locations like Haiti and have offers of hosting a radio show. And all this with no college education and a questionable high school education.

So I'm saying, sex out of wedlock creates jobs and isn't that the bottom line for Republicans?

To 5:17. You don't know how very close you are to the truth when you said, "Before you know it, Kansas and Oklahoma will be forcing everyone to church at gunpoint."

We lived in a small town in SE KS a couple of decades ago. The white Baptist church (there was a black one, because the town kept them separate - even to the cemeteries)had volunteers who kept tabs on which cars did not leave their driveways on Sunday.

Then, later, another volunteer was sent out to the offending household to ask why the people did not attend church. This "churching" event occurred twice a year though records were kept more often.

I remember getting one of those visits and having our preschool child terrified by the volunteer who ominously told her that "mommy and daddy are going to hell unless they start going to church."

That was the last time I spent time listening to or talking to folks who knock on the door to "spread the gospel." I don't need to hear any more hate or horror-filled speech, thank you very much.

Oh, I forgot to mention that we regularly got nasty little messages taped to our door telling us how awful we were because we had not "found the Lord." Needless to say, we moved as soon as we could and have never, ever regretted it.

I do often wonder, though, how much better or worse it's gotten there since the rise of the really aggressive and cuckoo evangelicals.

Since a lot of things that the RepoNazi warned that the Dims would do, but have done themselves, like death panels in Arizona and Florida, and Big Gov sticking its spys up women's cervices and forcing medical tests not ordered by a physician, would it really surprise anybody if they were the ones planning Sharia type laws.

I think these puritanical teabaggers are overreaching so far that it will backfire on them. The 'baggers gained a bit of traction this last election, I believe not because they represent the true sentiments of Americans, but because Democrats were rather disillusioned with the meagre response from President Obama and the Democrats in Congress and stayed home on election day. Of course the teabaggers read this a sign from God that their myopic 15th Century view of the world was to be instituted with brute force.

I predict that Americans will recoil from such a move toward a KKKhristian theocracy. Too many of us would run afoul of their strident, unbending intolerance.

I think that this actually represents a desperate last gasp of the narrow minded, superstitious, self righteous asshats that make up the teabaggers. Maybe it's good that we've seen where they would take us if they were in total control of the government. We sure as hell don't want to go there.

I suspect that we will ultimately thank teabagging buffoons like WI Gov. Snot Wanker and "Dipshit" Don Haase for being so unbelievably arrogant and stupid.

Seriously people, don't even think about sitting out any election. The costs are just too damn high. How'd you like "Dipshit" Don as your next governor, Alaskans?

I honestly think a lot of conservatives have some serious mental and/or emotional issues because so many of them think that EVERYTHING is "too liberal". If everything is "too liberal", maybe it's you.

I question their understanding of freedom, since they think you are only free if either you think and act just like them or they way they think you should. They pay too much attention to labels and not enough to actions and consequences. Texas oilman HL Hunt wanted to send young people to conservative education camps, until somebody pointed out that his plan sounded a lot like Stalin's concentration camps.

Whoever made the comment about sending people to church at gunpoint may have been correct. I wish these people would realize if god wants to communicate with me, he can do it himself. He doesn't need these people to do it.

  52. History repeats itself, friends. At a time when our Governor is pushing for a giant tax break for oil companies operating in Alaska, he picks a nutcase who wants to punish folks for sins of the flesh. Governor Parnell worked for ExxonMobile as a litigator during the Exxon valdez settlement. The fishermen of Central Alaska got royally screwed! ExxonMobile got away with murder! The Governor also was a paid lobbyist for a lobbying firm that represents Big Oil in Alaska. The Governor is pushing his "respect" agenda at the same time his bill to cut Oil Company taxes is about to get rammed through.

History lesson: Charles Keating, owner of Lincoln Savings, was responsible for the biggest S & L scam to date in the 1970's. He later went off to prison. Keating had been a very loud critic of pornography. He appeared to be standing at the pinnacle of moral high ground before it became apparent that he'd been a big league con-man. Does anyone not see a historical connection here?
