Palmer Republican Rep. Carl Gatto has set off a political firestorm with a bill aimed at stopping what he deems as the potential of Islamic religious law -- Sharia -- trumping the U.S. Constitution in Alaska courts.
What in the hell is this guy talking about? Who could possibly support wasting our Alaska Legislatior's time on this bullshit/
Gatto said he has strong support of Mat-Su area tea party groups...
Oh, now I see it is an idea hatched by the knuckle draggers and paint chip eaters in Wasilla and Palmer. How could I have NOT seen that coming?
However to be fair to Gatto, which by the way is Italian for "asshole," he is not the only low functioning moron attempting to stop those terrible Muslims from implementing Islamic law in their states. Even though there is NO evidence that any American Muslims are actively attempting to do any such thing.
It's part of a push nationally by conservative state legislators, with similar measures introduced in more than a dozen states.
However just because there are other low functioning political types doing the same thing, it does not provide any cover for Mr.
By the way exactly how many Muslims do we even HAVE in Alaska?
A member of the Islamic Community Center of Alaska sent an email addressed to Gatto saying 4,000 to 6,000 Muslims live peacefully in Alaska and asking him to "please do not ignite hate and misunderstanding." Another Muslim from Anchorage, Lamin Jobarteh, said Muslims follow U.S. law. There is no Sharia law in Alaska, he said.
"There is nothing like that. We have a harmonious relationship with everybody here," said Jobarteh, who said he's originally from Gambia and has lived in Anchorage for the past 17 years.
"4,000 to 6,000?" How in the hell is a group that makes up less than 1% of the population in our state supposed to impose ANYTHING on the rest of us?
You know it seems pretty clear to me that Rep. Gallo is suffering from a pronounced case of xenophobia. And that he clearly fears anything that is unlike him, or that threatens his belief that Christianity is the all time bestest religion in the whole wide world.
However what he is doing could be very harmful to the peace loving Muslims who live in our state.
And what Rep. Gatto fails to understand is that making these accusations about a people who have done him no harm, and who have only professed a desire to live in harmony, can smear their good name and cause them to suffer harassment or threatening behavior by those who take Rep. Gatto at his word.
Now I don't actually know Rep. Gatto. I have only seen him the one time standing outside in his robe while I drove past. But he seemed quite pleasant and even waved to me.
However I have to believe that deep down inside Rep. Gatto is a decent man, and I implore him to simply drop this ridiculous idea and get back to working on things of substance that really matter to the people of Alaska. Especially since it appears that even IF, by some miracle, this law were to pass, it would not make one bit of difference to how law is practiced in this state anyhow.
Anchorage Democratic Rep. Max Gruenberg said the bill as written wouldn't apply to criminal law, and asked a lawyer for the state whether she could see a scenario where the bill would make any difference in how the laws are being applied in Alaska.
"I've had difficulty figuring out how it could ever be applied," said Assistant Attorney General Mary Ellen Beardsley.
You know if the teabaggers are all so fired up about saving the state some money, perhaps they could start by not spending valuable tax payer money on frivolous bullshit like this!
Just a thought.
You know I love Alaska, lived there for a while, have a son, daughter in law and granddaughter living in Fairbanks now. Come to think of it, an ex-wife there too. But for a state with such a small population there sure are a lot of nutcases in your politics. But even so, I will visit whenever I get the chance. If I was to ever move again it would be back to Fairbanks.
ReplyDeleteFucking stupid racist idiots. . . .
ReplyDeleteGoodnight.
You know, considering this anti-Muslim nonsense is being done in the lead-up to the 2012 election, I am starting to believe it is simply anti-Obama rhetoric. If you make Muslims the enemy, and 51% (or whatever it was in that poll a few months ago) of conservatives believe President Obama is a Muslim, you are more than halfway to convincing these knuckleheads that they should vote for anyone but him -- even one of the bunch of sorry candidates the Republicans are presenting.
ReplyDeleteThe crap coming from these R people is so absurd - and so racist. The most absurd - the guy Jon Stewart quoted on the Daily Show last night - something about SSA going bankrupt because people started having abortions so now there aren't enough kids to pay for the retirees? What the hell, they are all nuts. Good point from Jon though, if abortion was legal sooner we wouldn't have so many retirees.
ReplyDeletePS SJKfromtheplane posted re: the Trig-Tripp-Trig riddle. It's on Regina's and I think she's right.
I'm all for banning Sharia law if they will also commit to banning Jewish law, fundie Christian law, LDS law, Catholic law and any other kind of law other than secular.
ReplyDeleteWhat these Nimrods, and yes, I am deliberately using that word, don't understand it that the basis of most commonly accepted laws were first inscribed on a pillar in the middle of downtown Baghdad. Oopsie....
The Psycho Bitch of Wasilla opened up the gates of hell and unleashed the racist demons upon this country!!
ReplyDeleteCarl Gatto has always been a low-functioning Nincompoop. At best, he's a waste of a perfectly good legislative seat where someone else could actually be making a positive difference in this state.
ReplyDeleteI suspect he's allowing the other Tea Party-leaning Republicans in the Legislature to use him to try to pass this ridiculous bill. He's always been more of a "go-along" guy than an original thinker. I don't think he's planning to run again, and even the other R's know how stupid this bill makes them look. But Carl? not so much....
And the Tea Party doesn't have any racists???
ReplyDeleteWhat Joe Klein said.
ReplyDeleteNo, gatto is Italian for cat. As it is in Spanish too. Gryphen is Italian for stupid, but that's not to say that Gatto isn't an asshole.
ReplyDeleteI would think the Republicans would be all for Sharia law, at least some of them.
ReplyDeleteThen they could literally kill their politican enemies and they'd only have to pay the family a million dollars to get off scot free.
I just wonder why these morons think Muslims left countries with Sharia law in the first place,
ReplyDeleteThese people have no understanding of either Sharia Law or the US Constitution. I'll forgive their ignorance of the former, but what is their excuse for the latter.
ReplyDeleteObviously, state representatives, across many states, have nothing better to do than come up with legislation that "might be useful sometime in the future".
ReplyDeleteMontana legislature wanted an armed independent voluntary paramilitary group which would only serve at the request of the Governor. Guess Wisconsin Walker forgot to do that step!
Arizona law to ban abortion based on race or sex. Although they don't have any evidence of it happening - like in China & India where males are more desired.
Oklahoma & Alaska have the Sharia law thing going...
Florida, Texas and Calif are trying to pass Arizona Immigration reform type bills.
Don't these people need to worry about housing? State Highways? School & college budgets? Utility assistance? Food banks? Things that are happening NOW - not what might happen - sometime - by someone.
I am so sick of these fucking teapublicans. My God they have all lost their ever loving minds.
ReplyDeleteCarl Gatto is an embarassment to the human race. I'm speechless.
ReplyDeleteFreaking idiot.
ReplyDelete@6:47- I agree. It's a political tactic. Well, let's come up with one too.
ReplyDeleteOMG, If this doesn't make everyone get out and vote on our next elections I don't know what will. There are way too many crazy people infiltrating our politics, including Gov. Parnell.
ReplyDeleteAll of his BS is totally against President Obama. These rascist ignorants are so resentful that a black man is soooo much more than they could ever be. It has driven them all insane.
ReplyDeleteWhat I want to see is a law banning the imposition of laws according to dominionist theology. It certainly looks like we are getting that kind of laws being proposed as well as unilaterally enacted in many places in the country already. Can you say Dominionist Taliban? It's here already, seems to me. And it's terrifying.
ReplyDeleteIt's April Fool's Day, has anyone seen the resident idiot Mrs Todd Palin?
ReplyDeletethese fools can't tell the difference between Christianity and fundamentalist nuttiness -- so no wonder they have trouble with the difference between regular ol' Muslims and radical Islamic extremists
ReplyDeleteGryphen,
ReplyDeleteYou ask how a group of 1% can make up laws affecting all, I give you the Tea Baggers.
To anonymous at 8:03
ReplyDeleteSince you're being nit picky: it might be spelled gatto in Italian, but in Spanish "cat" is spelled gato.
And the Italian word for "stupid" is stupidio.
Gotta love the irony in your post. You did the same thing to Gryphen's name that he did to Gatto's name. Only when he did it, it was funny. When you did it, it was just smug and lame.
so now alaska gets to show off all it's idiots, sort of a matched set with the rest of the repub governors in the lower 48.
ReplyDeleteGatto is an asshole! Hope I run into him sometime as I'll give him a piece of my mind. And, I'm American born, white, female and a senior. How dare he do that to our Muslim neighbors in Alaska.
ReplyDeleteDear Rep Gatto,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for pushing for legislation protecting us from the imaginary voices in your head. Next, we need a bill to ban the practice of alchemy in our state. If we don't ban it now, weirdos will be roaming our state turning moose nuggets into gold nuggets, putting those hard working miners out of a job.
What a fascist. I suppose he'll make Muslims wear a yellow 'M' next?
ReplyDeleteTime to use the law and send these morons to the moon. :)
Quetzalcoatl
Just another dumb fucking white man stirring up trouble where it did not previously exist.
ReplyDeleteTypical shit-minded teabagger zealotry.
Funny, found out his wife (career nurse for the Mat-Su School system), is living in the lower 48 and he is living in a hanger in Palmer. Shades of Vic???
ReplyDelete"School & college budgets?"
ReplyDeleteSchools? No, we don't need no stinkin' schools in Indiana, Florida, etc. Put the little buggers to work - in Maine and Georgia.
HAPPY SARAH PALIN DAY to everyone.
ReplyDeleteWe not only have the worlds biggest April Fool in Alaska, we have the worlds dumbest jackass family, the Palins.
I've watched this Legislative session like never before.
ReplyDelete> They do nothing. That's a fact.
I've actually researched the statutory reason for that body's existence and purpose.
Do we mistakenly believe that the Legislature is charged with authority for management and oversight of state affairs? 'Cause that's not what they do. In fact, everything that I think they should be working on, turns out to be the purview of some state department and they're not allowed to DO anything.
Like the Personnel/Ethics Board, for example. And the Attorney General's office function.
Nope, not their job. But they can represent us choosing state animals and designating the various Ted Stevens recognitions.
What is their purpose, again?
I am embarrassed this moron is also from the Mat-Su Valley. I'm making a prediction that during the next election cycle this asshole is going to be thrown out on his Gatto. I'll work hard for whoever runs against him.
ReplyDelete7:57 Palin admitted on tv to using political messages. This may be why she was enraged trying to divert attention from the facts you mentioned.
ReplyDeleteMy aunt, the bona fide teabagger in Texas, brought this up last time I spoke to her. "I'm fighting to have that SHARIA LAW outlawed in the State of Texas." "What's that?", I ask. "Well, it means that if they want to sue somebody, they can declare SHARIA LAW, and take over another person's property!"
ReplyDeleteTo which I said, "That's impossible! When you are on U.S. soil, our federal, state and local laws apply. I mean, you can declare that you live by whatever law you want, but when the Feds arrest your bony hind end, it will wind up sitting in a federal prison with your little Sharia flag taped to the wall!"
I'm not sure I convinced her, though.
gryphen why can't you use your detective skills and research Chicago style politics? Therein lies the real bits of info.
ReplyDeleteChicago makes AK childsplay
You guys seriously need this law! Every time I visit Alaska it's looking more and more like Saudi Arabia, what with all the burqas and hijabs and those big sikhy looking turban hats ya'll are wearing up there -- you need to get back to some good old fashioned American heartland values people! Listen to Sarah! No more Sharia for ya'll, time to go back to your constitution, the American one!
ReplyDeletefucking morons. If they're not invading uteruses looking for signs of improper handling (abortions!) then they're trying to push their own brand of sharia on the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteBefore I read the whole story I just had to say they could not have picked a cuter little boy. He's perfect with that sign; how could anyone hate him?
ReplyDeleteLove his sign and love his smile. I hope he grows up to have love and peace in his life.
These assholes are so stupid and uncultured. Do they not work in offices where there are people from many different cultures and ethnicities? Oh yeah, I forgot. They don't work. They take money from the same government that they want to get the hell out of their business. Just like Joe Miller and the rest of the tea baggers. They protest about Socialism, but damn, don't threaten to take away their Medicare.
Whew. Now I'll read the story. Sorry, that picture just really got me.
Thanks Gryphen for all that you do. I used to read HuffPo several times a day, now I don't, but I check in at your site several times a day. Just want to say I appreciate you and your blog.
R in NC
The stench of nasty "tea" is seeping into the fabric of society. We know that Sarah Palin,De Mint.Bachmann etc have all been stirring the pot with their fear, hate, we, them, taking our country back etc.. because they have nothing good to offer, and are making money of this. The Koch brothers have put in the $$$ugar, to sweeten this pot. It is time that real decent people rise up and say Enough! WE are not taking it anymore! The Pen is mightier than the sword!
ReplyDelete6:47, I think you're totally right.
ReplyDeleteYou know this jerk has people lying awake at night, worried about Sharia law. Oh boy.
I'm Christian, Catholic even, and I understand perfectly the separation of church and state. Is it too much to ask?
This jerk and his jerks are the traitors. They have no understanding of what our country was founded on.
I can see that it is about time to start avoiding the news again. I have to do that when I reach saturation with assholes like Gatto. And the idiots who keep voting these assholes in.
ReplyDeleteSomething the teaparty and other semi-literates seem to NOT understand is that a cornerstone of sharia law is NO ABORTIONS.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.pregnantpause.org/lex/world02map.htm
And as long as we're talking about idiots...
Look at the world map of health-care coverage:
http://aquadoc.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341bf80a53ef0120a56b45cd970b-pi
Notice anything (besides the USA being equivalent to third-world nations as far as health care is concerned)?
Look at Afghanistan and Iraq
- TOTAL universal health care -
paid for with YOUR tax dollars. (Thank you George W. Bush)
Yes, your tax dollars are going towards supplying two muslim countries with universal health care while you pay extortion to Big Insurance Corporations.
Keep voting Republican, fools, and we'll all be right back in the dark ages alongside the poor people scrabbling around the desert for a slice of bread and a drink of clean water.
Fools...
Palin has issues with journalists. Had she actually gotten that fancy degree she claims to have (but we've never seen proof), then she would understand that there are times when someone goes a tad overboard, and gets to go to the back of the bus. Now, if Britebart had tossed queen estersarah over the side, he'd be under it, instead of in back of it.
ReplyDeleteActions speak louder then words...this noise is the distraction while he picks your pocket.
ReplyDeleteNo, Gatto is not against Sharia Law...this is a distraction so he and the rest of his ilk can impose their own relegious law on you and I.
I wonder how much time Gatto, his staff and attorneys wasted on crafting this piece of crap legislation. He should reimburse the state....
ReplyDeleteThe bitter irony with these Sharia xenophobes, is that if they'd just acknowledge the Constitutionally provided separation of church and state, they'd realize the Founding Fathers already protected us from Islamic rule! MORONS!
ReplyDeleteDyson, Coghill, Haase, Keller and Kelly all received recognition awards from Eagle Forum in the past. Eagle Forum is providing the template legislation for these Sharia law and union-busting bills to each state. Connect the dots.
ReplyDeleteAh, but this could actually work in our favor! The way the bill is worded it would negate ANY foreign "law" from overruling the AK and US Constitution. Which means since the bible was written in a foreign land (middle eastern region no less) no biblical law could be implemented.
ReplyDeleteWon't the dominionists heads just explode when they try to ram biblical law down folks' throats only to be thwarted in court by their own bill?
"Gatto said he has strong support of Mat-Su area tea party groups..."
ReplyDeleteThe Tea Party Caucus in the U.S. Congress represents a resounding 50 Representatives out of 435, and 4 Senators out of 100.
That's 10%!!
These wingnuts have entirely too much voice, thanks to the corporate-owned MSM, compared to more worthy, sane, educated intelligent groups.
Gatto is now in Hell --> http://www.adn.com/2012/04/10/2416161/palmer-lawmaker-gatto-dies-after.html
ReplyDeleteIn the 70s I knew Carl as a ParaMedic a Firefighter and as a friend. He was an open minded, well educated man; then. I observed his move to a conservative religious viewpoint. Still we could converse even in disagreement. What happened to create his conversion to fit the above stories is well beyond me. That kind of change is frightening. I'd prefer to keep my old image of Carl, this new one is not befitting his education and intelligence. What happened? James Koss, MD FAAEM
