Sarah Palin apparently had second thoughts about crossing an Israeli checkpoint on Monday to visit Bethlehem during a three-day visit to Jerusalem.
The former governor of Alaska pulled up to the checkpoint run by the Israeli border police to the south of Jerusalem in a white people carrier, with her husband, Todd, her assistant and Israeli guides.
None of the occupants left the car nor did they speak to the police officers at the checkpoint, according to photographers at the scene. They then turned around and drove away. A spokesman for the Israeli police said there was no incident at the checkpoint and a spokesman for the Israeli army said that Palin's group had not co-ordinated a visit to the occupied Palestinian territory.
Palin's group then stopped at a nearby Greek Orthodox monastery before returning to her hotel in the centre of west Jerusalem from where they later continued their tour of the city.
Tourists need to carry passports to cross checkpoints into the occupied Palestinian territory and Israelis are not normally permitted to enter areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority, such as Bethlehem.
Okay color me confused. Why in the hell would a woman who claims to be this super Christian, NOT visit Bethlehem after she flew all the way to Israel? That makes no sense to me.
Why wouldn't a woman who called it "overwhelming" to touch cornerstone of her faith, NOT continue on to the place where Christianity was literally born. (You know if you believe all of the information in the Bible of course.)
She must have had her passport so that cannot be the reason. Unless it was left behind in their hotel, but why wouldn't they go back and then try again?
Was she afraid to enter the West Bank due to her anti-Iranian rhetoric? That would seem unnecessarily paranoid.
You know at this point I just have to throw my hands into the air and say, "Beats the hell out of me."

Even so, I agree with you...PARTICULARLY if this trip was planned by a Christian group rather than the Republican Party, as I've read. They are all too familiar, I'm sure, with whatever documentation old be needed. Maybe Sarah Palin's ego caused her to believe that "rules" simply don't apply to her. HAHA...welcome to Israel, Mrs. Palin. The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) don't give a poop WHO you say you are!

ReplyDeleteI'd say it was due to poor planning with Palin's entourage. I just returned from a visit to Israel and Jordan which included a visit to Bethlehem. All arrangements were made by our experienced tour organizers that had tons of experience in arranging tours to Bethlehem. In our visit to Bethlehem, we had to switch tour buses and tour guides at the checkpoint as our Israel bus and tour guide was not permitted in the Palestinian governed area.

Hmmm, so many parallels between the Palin "wild ride" and the one that Mary took.
I agree with the Telegraph article that she didn't know where Bethlehem was (guess she can't see it from her house). But I loved the comments here about her retreating and that God refused to pay her speaking fee.

ReplyDeleteThere is a parallel here between this trip to Bethlehem and Sarah Palin running for President. She's gonna get right up to the starting gate........and turn around and go to dinner. She's just along for the ride. Gotta spend that PAC money on something. Might as well spend it doing something that the crazy base will eat up and Inspire them to send her more money.

Actually, Netanyahu and Sarah are a good match for each other. Ultra right wing, war hawks, both love Israel, and Netanyahu has had his share of scandals. Just google the two words and you'll find pages of scandals that always seemed to escape from. And, his wife has anger issues with the help.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading the articles, it seems that there was poor planning on the part of Palin's team. Another good reason to keep her far from the White House. Not only is she messed up, so are her advisors.

ReplyDeleteTo my mind there's something fishy with that story about her party being turned back at the Bethlehem check point. As you say, she and Todd were supposedly traveling with a Christian tour group. It seems to me that the tour organizer would have been aware of their itinerary and thus would have cleared access to the places they wanted to visit ahead of time. That's what tour organizers are for, especially since, you know, Sarah Palin is such an important dignitary and all....
I've never visited Israel, so I can't base my assumptions on personal experience. However, my son went there three years ago to take part in a BBC documentary about the twelve disciples (he's written a book on Judas Iscariot and he did a few on-screen interviews). Every aspect of the trip was taken care of, down to the finest detail, and he went everywhere, including Bethlehem, without the slightest problem; he stayed at a hotel in East Jerusalem and he saw the "Palestinian wall."
Granted, my son was traveling under the auspices of the BBC; he went to the major Christian and Muslim holy sites with the production crew. But that's my point: none of the people involved in the project were "stars" or "dignitaries." They were television/film professionals and academics, yet they were free to go throughout the country--because plans were made ahead of time.
My theory is that, since the Palins flew to Israel via private jet, they possibly touched base with a Christian group only to get a lay of the land beforehand. They were not part of any organized group, so they made no preparatory arrangements. That's just not the way the roguish Palins roll. From what we've seen of Sarah's behavior since 2008, we can safely say that she presumed she could go, unrestricted, wherever she pleased in Israel and she'd immediately be recognized and embraced. I mean, it's Purim, she's Queen Esther. She can crash through those gates--any of 'em, all of 'em. Right?
But, alas, not the Bethlehem gate. A Guardian article has confirmed that the Palins were denied passage because they did not have their passports, which are required. Isn't it funny how reality bites.
You could pick anyone at random out of a supermarket checkout line and get the same level of intellect as was on display here. Seriously, who cares what this idiot thinks about anything?

She can't do anything with the eyes, but her hair is unkempt and her outfit is rather forlorn. Angelina Jolie and Hillary Clinton know how to look casual & professional at the same time.

the link to the post about the Logan law is definitely interesting - I think Palin IS violating the law - is there some way we can make a coordinate effort to have the Justtice Dept take this situation seriously and hold her accountable?
ReplyDeleteIf someone with better legal knowledge about it could let us know if she is in violation and what we would need to do to start a public demand to the proper officials - who to contact, etc. - once we had the info perhaps we could start a facebook page or soemthing just as a place to coordinate and get the word out so letters, phone calls or whatever could be done
It's just odd that this person who has been a political figure for so long is now, probably 50 years old, is just having the opportunity to travel abroad. It seems that she only saw America when offered the chance when running for VP and then on the book tour that she did after becoming a national figure.

I'm not certain what her childhood was like, but it certainly seems that her parents fell down in their duty to show the world to their children. Sarah Palin is like an innocent child in a candy shop; she's doing the things at 50 that most of us had done by the time we went to University. From what I've read she only got a passport when she visited Kuwait as Governor. We now get to suffer through this middle aged demagogue seeing the world for the first time and pretending to espouse the values of all Americans while she does it.
Why is anybody surprised that Palin went to the front door of Bethlehem, quit and returned to her hotel. That's what Palin has always been about. Do we want this idiot to run for POTUS and then quit on the job as she has done all her life?

Would our president bother to see a failed former candidate for vice PM (if there is such a thing)? I seriously doubt it. We all know by experience that everything Palin touches turns to shit. @anon 11:39 Sarah's was very defensive about not having traveled or been anywhere during the 2008 election. She claimed that she wasn't one of those rich kids whose parents give them a passport and a backpack for a high school graduation present and send them off to Europe.
ReplyDeleteWell, most parents don't give their kids a backpack and a passport. But, I know lots of kids who do work hard so they can spend a semester abroad and learn about a different culture and place. However, Chuck Heath let us know the real problem. Sarah was uncomfortable in Hawaii with those all of those Asian types. I doubt that she saw real people in India, the ones who sleep in the streets, the ones who thrust their hands in your facing begging for a couple of pennies. Nor did she see how many of the Palestinians live when she balked at visiting one of the holiest places for Christians.
More than likely, she just forgot the passports, leaving them in the hotel. Sarah doesn't follow those silly rules about always having your ID with you. People ought to know who she is because she's Sarah Palin.

ReplyDeleteThat's silly. The reporters who saw the incident clearly said that there was NO visible reason for her to turn around. They didn't even get out of the car or talk to anyone. They simply drove near the checkpoint and then left.
WOW! How much I would like to go back to Israel again..my parents took me when I was 8 YO...But I want to do it again :) at least one more time..walking in the footsteps of Christ!
