Ex-Palin spokesman, Bill McAllister, threatens to slap Professor for writing research paper questioning why the media ignored the rumors of Sarah's faked pregnancy. Update!

Courtesy of The Northerner:

A Northern Kentucky University professor’s research about how the news media handled rumors of a pregnancy hoax by former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has gotten a spirited response from her former spokesman.

In his paper “Palin, the Press, and the Fake Pregnancy Rumor,” associate journalism professor Brad Scharlott explores how the press handled the rumor that Trig Palin may not actually be the son of Sarah Palin, asserting that there was enough evidence of a pregnancy hoax to warrant asking more questions.

“[There’s] a theory out of mass communications that ideas not in the mainstream can be squeezed out of the public sphere entirely,” Scharlott said. “I think that’s what happened with the idea that Palin may have faked the pregnancy and now, while some people may privately speak about it, no one in America wants to be quoted about it.”

Once Scharlott completed his research, he said he submitted a copy to Bill McAllister, who is currently the communications director for the Alaska Department of Law and had previously served as the communications director for Sarah Palin during her vice-presidential bid in 2008.

“[In the paper,] I suggest that he was in fact, possibly, involved in a hoax,” Scharlott said.

“In the spirit of fairness, I thought he should get a copy. That’s what journalists normally do.”

After sending his research to McAllister, Scharlott said he was not expecting what came next.

“If we ever meet, I’ll slap you,” McAllister wrote in an email to Scharlott on April 5. “In a different era, I’d challenge you to a duel.”

McAlliser’s email continued, calling Scharlott a “scoundrel” and “despicable.” He then forwarded his response to Scharlott to five other members of the Communications Department, with the subject line “Brad Scharlott disgraces your university.”

“He should be fired, frankly,” McAllister said. “I can’t believe [the] university is going to let some idiot present a paper [like this.]”

Oooh, can you say "overly sensitive?"  WTF?

If McAllister has nothing to hide, why not simply respond with, "Dude, you are completely incorrect about my involvement in perpetrating a hoax.  And if there was one, which I doubt, I knew nothing about it."

There you go, that was all that needed to be said.  But instead of such a simple response, McAllister threatens to bitchslap this guy if he meets him, and then fantasizes about killing him in a duel?

Seriously?

It sounds to me like McAllister is worried that the Professor might have the goods, and that his journalistic credibility might be in question right when he is just now getting back into the news business.

Okay want a little inside info?  Professor Scharlott and I have been in contact for about two months.  I received and read a rough draft of his research paper about a month ago, and told him it was awesome! We had discussed the possibility of just having it posted here on IM, but I told him it would be much better if he could publish it somewhere which would reach a wider audience.

Clearly he took that advice.

Now to be clear, I had NOTHING to do with the research that went into this, nor did  I write any of it myself. This is 100% the result of Professor Scharlott's hard work, and it is amazing!

As a matter of fact if you click the link up at the top you can read his paper for yourself.  And believe me, it is well worth your time to do so.

Update: Joe McGinniss has something interesting to say about this story as well.

Finally! A PhD goes after the hoax that Sarah pulled on this country for her own political gains. Not a blogger that can be dragged through the mud, but a full on professor. The paper is AWESOME and WELL worth reading start to finish. I found myself feeling so happy that finally she is being called out and it's going mainstream.

Gryphen, what is he going to do with his paper? Publish in a communications journal? take it mainstream to a newspaper, magazine, etc.? Write a book?

While i realize it was research-driven and thus would take a bit of work to get it in the realm of the mainstream, I hope he does so, frankly.

Finally, someone has taken a published position on Palin's fake pregnancy. Yea!

Many of us in Alaska have no regard or respect for McAllister. He is actually pretty creepy and hinky.

Thank you, Mr. Professor! Don't worry about McAllister.

    You know what?

I am so unbelievably sick of this woman that I can't even articulate it adequately!

She actually makes me ill, and never more so than when she continues to take jabs at our hard working, dedicated POTUS who has more integrity in his toenail clippings than Sarah will ever possess.

This bitch and those who hide her failings, foibles and falsies (pregnancies and others) make me livid with disgust.

**standing down from my soapbox now, Gryph.

Funny Bill McAllister wanted to "challenge him to a duel if it were a different Era"...what is this, a Warner Brother's Cartoon? WTF?!
I picture Bugs Bunny slapping someone with a white glove and saying "Of course you know, this means war"...effing Alaskans! To the L48; there are sane ones up here, I promise!

This guy must be on somebody's payroll, or is getting even with Scarah for some reason - because why in the world would a professional spokesperson, experienced in the "communications" role, ever ever ever respond to something like this in this manner? Over the top doesn't even do it justice! And just to make sure that his little hissy fit got maximum play, he sends copies of his laughable (but still threatening in a bitch-slap kind of way) email to this professor's colleagues with defamatory statements. Wow. All these unhinged third-rate hacks she surrounds herself with certainly do her justice.

We all know it was a fake, many in the media know it was a fake. But, 3 years hence, it might be well past time to have any impact on Palin or her aspirations. Wherever she got Trig, she is now stuck with him and all of his problems forever and ever since she decided to fake a pregnancy to get him. He is hers and hers only and it tickles me that she is saddled with this less than ideal child. (although, really, all of her children and "less than ideal" in many different ways)

If just 5 people read it that is 5 more that will know about it than did before and maybe they will tell a couple of people. Every store and gas station haz a bulletin board and the library has a table. I work in a pretty big office and nobody there has heard about it. Let's tell them. I encourage others to do the same.

Actually, this is a very appropriate topic for an academic in his particular field to pursue. These are the kinds of questions routinely explored within journalism schools, or even more broadly, communication programs. That's the thing about academics: the questions have merit in their own right, whatever the ultimate outcome: hypothesis, data, interpretation or narrative outcome.

This is an obvious question for journalism analysis; there was a time when Poynter would have taken it up, or the Columbia Journalism Review.

( Even if it only is to slap someone- that is kind of a threat isn't it?)

    that will be very obvious.

As a former communications director for Palin- one may be sure that Mr. Bil McCallister is unbiased and interested in the truth isn't he? I mean now that he's back in the journalism business as opposed to the "communications" business.

Bill McAllister, currently communications director for the Alaska Department of Law, starts as a reporter at KTVA, Channel 11, next week in a "multifaceted" role, he said. As he grows up, I so hope that Sarah Palin's supposed son, Trig, will never have the capacity to understand how horrible Sarah and Todd are and were as parents to him.

I feel for their other children, because as they gain adulthood, they will have a full understanding of what their parents were and were not.

They have had horrid examples and I so feel sorry for them. Track and Bristol were led down a path and just look at their lives today. Nothing but lies surround them and their individual lives.

Sarah and Todd have a place waiting for them in hell.

I think you might be missing the larger point. If the American and global media cannot be bothered to investigate one insane housewife, what CAN they investigate?

What story can we ever trust them with again!?!

This is much, much, much bigger than Sarah Palin, in my opinion. Substitute any situation that's inconvenient and sordid but vital to national interests, lying out in the open and just waiting to be discovered, and the answer is the same: we can trust no one to inform us properly, hence, democracy is dead.

How can anybody explain Sarah's pictures through her different stages of pregnancy with Trigg? You look at her earlier births and she was big as a house, but with Trigg she had a square small stomach late in her pregnancy.

Ever since McCain introduced this person to America, everything she said is questionable and self serving. Since she was mayor of Wasilla it has been all about money and all about Sarah, not so much about family. You look at pictures of her house and her yard in Wasilla and there is no indication that kids live there. No sandbox, no swings, no bbq grill, no picnic table until she did SP's Alaska and we can go on and on. What kind of kid did Chuck and Sally raise?

A 20 year old giving birth and zooming around after a birth is possible, but the quitter queen was what-- 44? Giving birth that late in life, no matter how many kids you have had, wears you out. You've had a long pregnancy, you have just lost a bunch of weight and you are still bleeding, and you are NOT going to be giving press conferences!

Doesn't Pal Sarah flake for less so she skips out on appearances? But she could do a press conference three days post partum and resume her governor duties? NO WAY.

The professor is going to get slapped for this? Or, in another time, he'd be challenged to a duel? These Tea Baggies really do what to set the clock back!

I want to confess something. When I was pregnant with my one and only child, I was leaking amniotic fluid for 4 days before going to the doctor. My husband was out of town on business on Friday and I had to go to court on Monday to try to get my niece out of Juvenile Hall (it's a long story). I didn't have any contractions and I think I convinced myself that it wasn't happening. I went to the doctor on Tuesday, and sure enough it was amniotic fluid. I never went into labor, he just did a c-section. They baby was fine, just 2 1/2 weeks early.

I hate that my experience slightly validates Palin's story (to me), but it is what it is. And also, the first time I smoked marijuana, I didn't inhale.

I assumed that the media would have thoroughly investigated such a bombshell claim.
We now know , thanks to Professor Scharlott's research ,
    how false that assumption was.
Palin's odd behavior the following months ,
now years, has convinced many of us on the right that she has some very serious problems
    and was never
remotely qualified to be a heartbeat

Obviously I and just about everyone I know who voted for the ticket ,
    regrets our vote
and feels duped by the McCain team.
For all her complaints about the " lamestream media "
as she calls them , Palin should in fact be grateful
that they are were so gullible and so timid and
    incurious about the odd circumstances
    surrounding her pregnancy.
As most of them remain today.
The photographic evidence compiled here and at other sites is damning .
The fable concerning her labor is beyond outlandish.
And if Palin is the child's mother ( which I have come to doubt ) ,
her behavior during labor was so reckless and
    irresponsible and incomprehensible
that it again proves how disturbed she is.
The murky details about the birth , including the alleged delivery of a high risk , premature infant at a hospital
without a NICU and it's attendant neonatology specialists
is reprehensible on so many levels.
Add to that the physician allegedly delivering her was not even an obstetrician and this goes beyond jaw dropping and into the realm of purposeful neglect.
If..Palin was the biological mother ,
    an enormous " if."
Because of the excellent research done by Gryphen,
the folks at Palingates ( with their links to many other
dedicated investigators ), the tenacity of Andrew Sullivan
and the work of Professor Scharlott , it may finally rouse the national media
    to examine this scandal.
Again, I say this as a conservative who applauds and appreciates the tremendous work of the investigative bloggers.
The truth should always trump politics.
My concern now is for the little boy because
he is the real victim in all of this.
Is he being properly cared for now that his usefulness
as a prop has expired ?
Isn't there enough evidence for Social Services to begin an investigation into his welfare ?

  75. I believe McAllister wrote some plays before becoming a journalist. You can see a certain writerly affectation in his email to me -- calling me a scoundrel, suggesting a duel. It's really kind of campy. He tried to act outraged, but it was just an act ... in fact, he acted in some of his own plays.

But what is really striking is the sheer stupidity of what he did in send that goofy email to my colleagues. What did he think that would do? I'm tenured, and no one at NKU give a f*** about what he says anyway. But he created a newsworthy event - exactly what he should have avoided doing. What a dope!

What a massive over reaction by this MacAlister fellow. I read all 29 pages of the paper. MacAlister is barely mentioned and not accused of being in on the hoax. The paper does propose an explanation about the baffling question of why journalists didn't pursue obvious and very troubling questions.

6:06, I noticed McAllister is barely mentioned in the paper too. And if there is an implication that he was hired based on his exposing her, I missed it. What's odd is McAllister is the one saying that, not the paper. Did McAllister tell the truth by accident?

  79. @emrysa I'm not surprised at anything the Palin's do. When Bristol was pg with Tripp the first dude was calling people around Wasilla that he knew were talking about it during the summer and spoke in a threatening manner telling them to keep their mouth shut. This was our Governor's husband! UNBELIVABLE to quote our Quitter Queen. Bizarro world is where we live.

Thank you Brad Scharlott for helping to pursue the truth in this matter. Whether it is a hoax or the terrifying Palins' wild ride story. Each one as equally disturbing.

    Welcome to IM Bscharlott.

I believe McAllister wrote some plays before becoming a journalist

That's the "Inverted Pyramid Theatre Troupe"

Do you have an email address that is off campus-and not subject to rightwing FOIA requests? People might have some additional information for you. It might be interesting to submit a FOIA for Palin administration emails containing erik09559, in case they haven't been lost yet.

Is the paper at The Northerner the same one that McAllister reacted to? I don't see what McAllister claims to see in the paper at the link.

"He doesn’t come out and say it, but he is implying there is some link between the story about Trig [Paxton Van Palin] and my being hired by her,” McAllister said. “The two things have nothing to do with her. She hired me because I was the best known politics reporter in the state of Alaska.”

McAllister is the one saying there is a link between Trig and his hiring, not Scharlott. That really does not make too much sense, and is not there in this paper that I can see. Straw man? Take the "best known politics reporter in the state of Alaska" off the beat, that's the other thing McAllister just said in this response.

One other thing about McAllister's response as reported in The Northerner. Was there something McAllister forgot to mention?

    http://www.andrewhalcro.com/why_walt_monegan_got_fired

Because that was the immediate big thing on the horizon, unless Sarah knew that a V.P. nomination was possible. That couldn't have had anything to do with his hiring could it?

Dr. Scharlott, if you're reading here, perhaps you might incorporate these facts:

    (1) Mat-Su hospital not only didn't have a neo-natal unit, they were not even certified to deliver twins.

    (2) In a somewhat recent speech (we can find the link for you), Sarah slipped up, and said Trig was born in Anchorage.

    (3) Many here have speculated over the years that the name 'Trig' was cruelly given to him because of his Down Syndrome condition, which in older medical terminology was referred to as Trisomy-G.

I stand in awe of your paper - I'm sure we all do. The press was criminally complicit in deliberately not discussing a topic of utmost national importance. As such, we can no longer trust them. From someone who has followed this saga (as so many of us have) for three years now, a rousing THANK YOU!

I was shocked at how gently the media treated her, given what I had discovered about her actual record and the circumstances of her child's "birth." I was also shocked at how my conservative women friends ate up the wild ride story. Had it been about anybody else, they would have been outraged at the recklessness. That election was just too crazy.

Our "news" media covered the Clintons' personal lives in such scandalous detail that now almost everyone assumes that if there were anything at all to Palin's Babygate, the media would have told us. Exactly why they have chosen to ignore the apparent faked pregnancy is a worthy topic. Squeamishness? Fear of being thought sexist? Wanting to keep viable a candidate who sells copy? Thanks for trying to answer that question.

McCallister is either 1) afraid he may have to pay back the hush-money to Palin or 2) feeling stupid for being in close contact with her and being too dumb to know that she was faking. How clueless can he be, when a woman is pregnant the signs are obvious. Besides, she "returned to work within days of giving birth to a special needs child" who in their right mind does that? It is not as though it was critical she return to her so-called "job" not while Jethro was running the state. I can see why your experience might cause you to believe Palin, but there are some striking differences between your experiences.

    1) you were pregnant with your first child and had no experience with labor and its' consequences.

    2) You didn't tell anyone. Palin had the past experience of 4 pregnancies, her husband and, supposedly her doctor, as well as knowing that this child had anomalies and was a high-risk birth.

    3) She was 44 and that puts her in a high-risk category. Presumably you were younger.

    4) She knowingly passed up several hospitals with level 3 nurseries and Mat-Su does not attend to level 3 births.

    5) What one does out of naivete would be different from what one would do with age, experience, and professional advice, not to mention the people she should have informed (flight crews, i.e.) in order to protect them.

He has presented a good case that the story has not been properly covered by the press. It is not necessary to present all the evidence to make the case. It is also not necessary to conclusively prove the case, just to prove that there is a case, not just some weewee'd up bloggers.

Fantastic paper written by Professor Brad Scharlott!

I listened for and anticipated media releases for Trig's birth and for Tripp's. It seemed very very odd that there was no coverage.

The coverage that there was was exactly as stated by Prof. Scharlott.... nonsensical.

Definitely, the media should have started an investigation at that time. Had her blatant lack of integrity been shown immediately after she was chosen for VP-- she may well have been replaced.

And we would not have been forced to endure the constant media exposure that the press has unwarrantedly bestowed upon her since then.

Her moral turpitude was and is definitely a very real issue!

Hopefully, one that will soon exposed for all the world to see.

FWIW, I emailed a photo I found on MMcCain's blog that had pictures from her daddy's campaign to Morgan, the owner of the blog that was shut down.

That blog was taken down before I saw the post that caused the threat. The photo I sent her was of the clan walking backstage at a rally. Brisket was wearing that same dress, the dark grey, but she was not stuffed at all like the day she walked out after the announcement was made that she was five months pregnant.

And, I think I also emailed her that picture of Brisket standing at a fair wearing a brown leather jacket zipped up with her hands in her pockets. Brisket was thin, no pregnancy was apparent. That picture was dated 07-19-08 by and posted at AlaskaDispatch, I think.

There's no way Brisket could have been thin on 07-19-08 and so stuffed on 09-01-08, approximately six weeks later.

Shortly thereafter, I went back to that blog to find that picture, but a lot of the photos were gone, including the one I sent Morgan.

Ironically, I'm posting this from a conference for professional journalists. As a longtime reader of this site, I've believed since 2008 that Sarah Palin did not give birth to Trig. But after sitting through a day of lectures discussing the role of journalists in society, I am reminded just how absurd it is that no one has made a serious attempt to get to the truth of this story.

A vice-presidential candidate perpetrating an enormous hoax that has benefited her politically....On what planet is that not legitimate news??

I am thrilled to see the professor tackle this issue. I read his entire paper and I found it to be very balanced. Hopefully it will gain traction and show the editors of this country that this IS a major story that needs more attention.

I said the same thing years ago - there was a picture of Bristol taken August 2008, and just a couple weeks before the RNC and she was SKINNY! I don't know how they made her look so pregnant at the RNC.....but they did, for some reason or another. That made me suspect that Tripp's birth (allegedly in Dec. 08) was also false.

When Bristol first got pregnant in 2007, the rumor was "OMG, her brother" - however, that makes sense NOW when considering SHE may not have known Todd's love child was related to her.

Considering everything this family has done is so bizarre and full of lies, I can only imagine how deep this crap goes.
