Geoffrey Dunn, author of the upcoming book "The Lies of Sarah Palin: The Untold Story Behind Her Relentless Quest for Power," has some very interesting facts to add to the controversy over Trig's birth story.

"You're writing about this  too Mr. Dunn?"
 From the Business Insider:

Hoping to disprove the conspiracy theory when I initiated work on my book--and to put the story to bed once and for all--I interviewed several close associates of Palin's, including her friends and political allies. I was anticipating, perhaps even hoping, that they would tell me conclusively that Trig was her child.

I was shocked by the response. One close friend of Palin's--a widely respected woman who had given birth to several children as well and who had close contact with Palin in Juneau up until the time of Trig's birth--told me that "Palin did not look like she was pregnant. Ever. Even when she had the bulging belly, I never felt that the rest of her body, her face especially, looked like she was pregnant." When I asked her point-blank if she was certain the baby was Palin's, she said, "No. I don't know what to believe."

The news of Palin's pregnancy came as a complete surprise to Palin's State Trooper security detail Gary Wheeler, a well-liked, 26-year veteran of the Alaska State Troopers who worked under several administrations in Alaska state government, both Republicans and Democrats. Only two weeks earlier, in late February of 2008, Wheeler had accompanied Palin back to Washington, D.C. for a Republican Governors Association Conference, where she had just met John McCain and his campaign manager Rick Davis, who was to be in charge of the vice-presidential nomination selection process. Wheeler remembers that Palin had changed into jeans upon her arrival in Washington, with no apparent revelation of pregnancy.

Wheeler also said that his wife, Corky, actually made fun of him when the news came out because he was supposed to be a "trained observer." Wheeler simply shakes his head: "I had nary an idea she was packin'."

As Wesley Loy of the Anchorage Daily News reported it at the time, Governor Palin "shocked and awed just about everybody around the Capitol" with her announcement.

This is at seven months.

Oh my friends this is very good stuff indeed!  Do yourself a favor and click that link at the top to read the entire article, you will NOT be sorry!

Is anybody else having as much fun today as I am?

"Scharlott's initial contention that Palin orchestrated an elaborate "hoax" around the birth of Trig does not hold up to close scrutiny. It remains a premise, not a fact."

Too bad Dunn remains unconvinced. What could convince him given all the evidence that is already out there? How good will his book be if he cannot get to the bottom of this issue?

Nikogriego, I was upset when I read that as well, but if you read the entire piece, you will see that he admits he does not really know what to believe but wants her to produce the birth certificate. At the very least, he holds her accountable for her words and actions

I first read the piece on Phil Munger's site and left this comment:

I had a child born with juandice after my water broke. He was in the hospital for THREE days under treatment (which is pretty standard). Then he was sent home and I was told to come in again the next day to have him re-examined. Trig had juandice, a hole in his heart and was premature. A premature baby is in the neo-natal unit, which Mat-su Hospital did not have. So, how was he treated?! Palin then brought Trig to her office THREE days after he was born to show him off. If this is not a bold faced lie, then please tell me what is? If you don't want to use the word "hoax," then call it what it is a "LIE."

@2:26 - that's the "safe" position to have in terms of winning those over who have not yet examined the hoax. Dunn says he could not prove that she was pregnant, though.

Coming from his background as an investigative journalist, Dunn is understandably drawn to those verifiable, "provable" instances in which Sarah's lies and deceits can be refuted.

Like many habitual liars, she has provided so, so many that it is challenging to call her out on each one in this passing parade of lie upon lie.

I believe that Dunn provides a valuable approach, by simply and directly refuting what is refutable. One by one he can build a case that is unarguably factual, and for that reason, compelling.

  15. Excellent article by Dunn. I have to agree that the birth story put forth by Palin is terrible. I have never understood why it was accepted and actually applauded, when it indicates that she had horrible judgment and no love for the baby she supposedly carried. The real crime with the hoax (in my opinion) is the coverup by the repubs and McCain campaign (who I believe had to know). I don't care so much that she covered for her daughter. I care that McCain and the Repub party were so low that they would try to foist this nutcase on the American people. That, to me, is the biggest crime.

no woman hides her pregnancy -- even a first pregnancy -- from everyone. it's impossible. even with my first pregnancy when i thought i was pretty sly and no one knew i was pregnant, and when i announced it at 12 weeks, many older women who had had babies told me they had suspected. and it's not the belly bulge that gives you away. i can spot pregnant women now myself. it's in the way they walk and the way they hold themselves.
there are so many things that add up to palin not being pregnant, but the fact that not one person suspected she was pregnant (for the 7th time!) is probably one of the best indicators.

What I think is going to have to happen is a lawsuit to establish cause--probable fraud--in order to gain access to HIPPA-protected records on Palin's pregnancy. And nobody's going to do that unless and until she announces her candidacy for prez. At that point the press and political operatives will become as rabid about the pregnancy records as they were about John Kerry's battle records and Geo Bush's air force reserve records. Would you like that Sarah? Or would you like to clear the air now...and whatever conscience you may have.

The McCain 2008 campaign did not make the selection of Sarah Palin. They did agree under pressure at the last minute to go along with her as the V.P. nominee. John McCain and his loyal insiders intended Joe Lieberman to be the nominee. Party switcher bipartisan Joe Lieberman.

There were others in the Republican party that did not support this idea. The religious right wing of the Republican Party. They were the ones that picked Sarah Palin for John McCain. The Republican Party was told: "If you pick Lieberman then we will go to our churches and tell our followers to stay home on election day. No grassroots turn out the vote effort, no volunteers, no campaign donations; all down the ticket nationwide." It would have been a Democratic victory of FDR proportions nationwide. That is how Sarah was the V.P. nominee in 2008.

The question is: Which of those responsible for telling McCain that Sarah Palin was the V.P. nominee knew about this pregnancy? The campaign to put Sarah Palin on the McCain 2008 ticket was already underway before the conception date of a hypothetical full term pregnancy ending on April 18, 2008.

That's one possible explanation for the silence from the McCain insiders.

  28. Here is what I posted under the article:

"Mr. Dunn: I'm puzzled by your taking exception to my writing Palin "likely" perpetrated a hoax. Your words: "Scharlott's initial contention that Palin orchestrated an elaborate 'hoax' around the birth of Trig does not hold up to close scrutiny. It remains a premise, not a fact." My word "likely," of course, means I am not trying to state a fact, but making a statement about probability.

"Are you suggesting it is unwise for me to use the word "likely" because you think it "unlikely" she staged a hoax? I imagine your instincts in the matter are exactly the same as mine -- that the odds are better than 50-50 (the common definition of “likely”) she is not Trig's birth mother. You no doubt have your reasons for not assigning a probability, and that is fine. But I do not think you have been fair to me -- I explicitly state that I cannot prove the case. For whatever reason, you have chosen to mischaracterize what I wrote."

Still, I find the piece very useful and I'm glad he wrote it.

Until last night, I had no idea the possibility of this hoax existed. But as an RN, having read a bit about it, consider the following scenario. Bristol is pregnant, is supposedly transferred from one school to another but never attends the second school due to mono (or pregnancy). The plan is to put the kid up for adoption. In early Feb, Bristol has an ultrasound revealing the DS (nuchal fold/other abnormalities). The baby is unadoptable, and a scandal for the governor. After the ultrasound, Bristol is so upset she has a wreck just outside the clinic. SP considers her options and decides to fake the pregnancy to increase her pro life bona fides. Bristol goes into labor the day before the Texas trip. Security is cancelled, the waters break, and the wild ride occurs. End of story.

Regarding how this all played out with the McCain campaign, here's what I've always believed. . .

When they were "vetting" Palin, the campaign asked if there was "anything else we need to know" regarding the family. Drugs. Arrests. Problems at school. Anything. And, of course, Sarah Palin essentially said "Nope. Nothing at all."

So she's chosen by McCain to be on the ticket, and the Bristol/Trig rumors start almost immediately. It reaches a point of critical mass, and the family finally confesses that Bristol is pregnant.

At this point, the McCain campaign is stuck. They can't dump Sarah from the ticket, because it will look awful. They can't claim that Palin lied to them when they asked the question, even though she did. And they can't claim they didn't know, even though they didn't, because it would have revealed what a horrible job they did vetting her. They have no way out, so they essentially just have to say "Yes, we knew all along" and act like it was never a factor.

There is simply no way that anyone would knowingly choose a running mate who had an unwed, pregnant, teenage daughter at the time. It's just too much of a headache to deal with, and I honestly think the McCain campaign had to deal with it because they truly didn't know.

The comments over on "Business Insider" are outrageous for the most part, but one poster brought up an issue that hasn't been touched on before. He/she suggested that the media (mostly men) are loathe to discuss anything involved with giving birth. Yeah, they like sex and dream of sex with $P, but they don't want to think of a baby coming out of her body, much less icky leaking amniotic fluid. I believe that distaste contributed to the "spiral of silence" more than any other single factor.

Either way the TriG story turns out it proves she is an idiot. We already had an idiot in the WH for 8 years. If the American people are stupid enough to do that again, those who put her there deserve every bad thing they get. We, on the other hand, do NOT deserve it.

If all the other 'gates' are fully exposed by the 3 books and the emails, then the only one being hurt by never having this particular one come to fruition will be TirG. Hopefully he will be loved and cared for and will never have to know.

The state of Alaska needs to investigate Dr. CBJ and the hospital where Trig was born at. Somebody filed false insurance and medical claims and it needs to be investigated. What if poor Jane Smith filed false medical and insurance claims (during Palin's 1/2 term) and the state of Alaska paid the claims, would Palin expect the state go after Jane Smith? You darn tootin' Sarah would go after Jane like she went after Trooper Wooten.

Knowing Sarah and how she went after the boy who guessed her email, I'm a guessing Sarah would go after Jane Smith with both barrels a firing.

Dunn is right Sarah has created a lose, lose, lose scenario.

She put her unborn child at risk if she broke water and did nothing, or she lied about.

She either used false id and possibly committed insurance fraud when she snuck into the amnio clinic with an old Sarah Heath id,or she lied.

She is either willing to do what she demands of Obama or she is a screaming hypocrite. (Sarah, his mother was American therefore by law Obama is America, he doesn't need a birth certificate for that because the Republicans admit he is an American's son.)

She either gave birth in Anchorage or in Wasilla, or not at all,so she lied about at least one of those alternatives.

The main premise of Professor Scharlott's research seems to be that the press was complicit in a cover-up, no matter which version of the story you choose to believe. The spiral of silence has been deafening.

Only now, with the publication of his draft on the net, has this controversy surfaced in the media, not yet in the MSM.

I'm getting sick and tired of people acting like, just because this has to do with a woman's "private parts," we should just leave it alone.

First of all, this has nothing to do with Sarah's private parts, because she didn't actually carry and give birth to Trig or any other baby in April of 2008.

Second, can people just please GROW UP! This isn't a privacy issue and it isn't an issue of reproductive freedom. And it certainly shouldn't be a "back off, you're talking about a lady" issue. There's nothing wrong about discussing birth and pregnancy. It's not shameful to do so and it's not creepy on its face.

The ONLY reason Sarah was able to carry out this LIE, is because she is a woman and it dealt with her reproductive organs. If you dare question her, you're sexist and a creep.

Meanwhile, our representatives have no trouble discussing women's health issues (including our reproductive freedom..when, how, what if we get pregnant) all over the place. Fox news is talking about where women can get pap smears, but nobody better question Sarah Palin's obviously faked pregnancy.

Does anyone else besides me remember a newsperson saying that while Sarah Palin was campaigning with old McFlubber that she answered the door of her hotel room/suite or whatever wearing only a towel?

It might be worthwhile to ferret out that reporter for a little chat. Surely if old Sarah was really PG at the time a towel would not hide it! Nor would an egocentric prick teaser want to be seen with a 7 month PG belly.

Hey Brad @3:41. Well, the joint is ROCKING, yes? And you can take most of the credit. I like your response to Dunn. That comment of his about your paper, and the one where he talks about Palin fiercely protecting her kids...those two comments did not go down well with me. I'm glad you called him out on what he really believes, or the way he's leaning. Now go do that with Andrew Sullivan, who simply must stop saying he's never ACCUSED Palin of the hoax, just asked for evidence. Please, accuse away!

  73. Anon at 6:06, your timing is off. The DS child had already been presented by the time she was on the campaign trail. You're thinking of the two reporters from [?] who were there to interview her, and she came out of the bathroom in a towel, sort of a preview for them I guess.

Even if the birth story proved out to be true, she should be investigated for abuse of her unborn child. She should be charged with knowingly putting air traveliers at risk, putting an airliner at risk of having to make emergency landing. For not going to a hospital immediately after leaking fluid. All this should be taken into consideration; and she was a public official, who is expected to obey the law.

She put her child in an endangered situation. No one talks about that? WTH is going on here?

And her doctor should be investigated for malpractice.

Too bad bloggers couldn't start over from the time Sarah gave the interview for that crazy birth story. If we could push back time and start over again, it would have been smart maybe to take her word, at face value. Instead of focusing on the fact she may not have delivered Trig and was lying, they should have called her bluff.

So, bloggers and the mainstream media should have shown shock and dismay from the story. They should have cornerned her and insisted on asking why she would risk the life of her unborn child that way? Where were the Family Values people, the American Family Association, the Prevention of Child Abuse organizations, Society for Protection of Unborn Children, the Pro-Life Orgs, National Association for Down Syndrome? What kind of parents would be so utterly unconcerned and careless?

No one was paying attention at the inconsistent details of her story. They fell through the cracks. Where was the State of Alaska?

If an unknown woman took a chance like this with their baby's delivery, she would no doubt have the state intervene and immediately send her to a therapist or psychiatric evaluation. And certainly things like this probably happen a lot under the radar, especially with young women on drugs, in unstable conditions.

But this from a sitting Governor AND the sitting Governor's husband? What example did that set? Their callous display of recklessness, traveling like that without seeing a doctor is the most mysterious case in the history of politics.

Mr. Dunn must not be much of an investigator or he would have found the person who swears Palin was pregnant on the treadmill. In fact, sounds like there was no overlap in his sources and Malley's sources.

lol. Like he's going to give it away for free when his book is on the way. The books will all be better than what the authors are disclosing in advance.

Dunn is "investigative" enough to realize that both a pregnancy hoax or the proud re-telling of blatant disregard for the life of a fetus shows that Sarah Palin is insane.

All a birth certificate would do is prove the true insanity of the wild ride from Texas.

Even Dunn must have looked at the video of Sarah Palin crossing her legs and leaning forward in the Newseek interview a mere 40 some days before the presentation of the 6+lb Trig. Palin's physical movements are impossible for a pregnant woman that close to term (in her 7th pregnancy, no less).

But Dunn "investigates" by interviewing people because he's choosing to ignore the obvious evidence.... guess it will sell some books for him... but not to me.

Yeah. So. "Bris' lived in Anchorage and went to West High. AFTER she disappeared from Wasilla high for several months. Most likely she gave birth sometime in late November or December 2007.

That birth didn't become a full tilt 'problem' for Sarah until the following spring when Mr. Kristol and others had packed Sarah's empty head with visions of being selected for VP. Hence the 'surprise' announcement (one day after McCain sewed up the Rep primary)that there was going to be an addition to Alaska's "First Family."

"How John McCain came to pick Sarah Palin".

    http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/10/27/081027fa_fact_mayer?currentPage=1

During her gubernatorial campaign, Bitney said, he began predicting to Palin that she would make the short list of Republican Vice-Presidential prospects. “She had the biography, I told her, to be a contender,” he recalled. At first, Palin only laughed. But within a few months of being sworn in she and others in her circle noticed that a blogger named Adam Brickley had started a movement to draft her as Vice-President. Palin also learned that a number of prominent conservative pundits would soon be passing through Juneau, on cruises sponsored by right-leaning political magazines. She invited these insiders to the governor’s mansion, and even led some of them on a helicopter tour.

    The first cruise:

On June 18, 2007, the first group disembarked in Juneau from the Holland America Line’s M.S. Oosterdam, and went to the governor’s mansion, a white wooden Colonial house with six two-story columns, for lunch. The contingent featured three of The Weekly Standard ’s top writers: William Kristol, the magazine’s Washington-based editor, who is also an Op-Ed columnist for the Times and a regular commentator on “Fox News Sunday”; Fred Barnes, the magazine’s executive editor and the co-host of “The Beltway Boys,” a political talk show on Fox News; and Michael Gerson, the former chief speechwriter for President Bush and a Washington Post columnist.

    The second cruise:

On August 1, 2007, a few weeks after the Weekly Standard cruise departed from Juneau, Palin hosted a second boatload of pundits, this time from a cruise featuring associates of National Review. Her guests, arriving on the M.S. Noordam, included Rich Lowry, the magazine’s editor and a syndicated columnist; Robert Bork, the conservative legal scholar and former federal judge; John Bolton, who served as the Bush Administration’s Ambassador to the United Nations from 2004 to 2006; Victor Davis Hanson, a conservative historian who is reportedly a favorite of Vice-President Dick Cheney; and Dick Morris, the ideologically ambidextrous political consultant, who writes a column for The Hill and appears regularly on Fox News.

As a former flight attendant with several Alaskan-based carriers, I can guarantee you that if ANY woman was at high-risk of giving birth on a commercial airliner DURING FLIGHT, ESPECIALLY with a deformed fetus (for lack of a better term), she NEVER be allowed to fly in the first place - ESPECIALLY if her water has broke/leaking fluid.

Why would ANY airline risk a woman giving birth (especially to a high-risk baby) on the floor of their airplane? Or diverting the airplane from its destination to the nearest airport with emergency services?

I've had a case where an infant went into cardiac-arrest and we hightailed it to Anchorage. The child was in an incubator with an attending nurse. We were somewhat trained for that situation (infant CPR) and the airline obviously gave permission to have the child transportated. (Unfortunately, the child died inflight despite our best efforts.)

I don't know the flight attendants personally on Sarah's 'wild ride', but if THEY didn't notice Sarah supposedly being 1) pregnant and 2) in labor, you can bet Sarah wasn't pregnant. Usually women at that late stage of pregnancy, if allowed to fly in the first place, need an extended seatbelt, which again, did not occur with Sarah. Plus, the flight attendants would have been notified of her condition.

Also, reading in the lounge in Seattle while waiting for her flight to Anchorage - nope, am not an RN, but it doesn't work that way in REAL life.

Occassionaly a pregnant woman will go into labor early on an airplane, but that is very rare. The woman obviously has permission to fly from her doctor - and the airline requires a release from the doctor when, again, a woman is in late stage of her pregnancy.

Just speaking from experience....Sarah Palin in one big LIAR and I hope to G*d, this tale of Trig's supposed birth goes viral. It is imperative that Sarah be exposed for the LIAR that she is and be regulated to the dustbin of history where she deserves to be.

Palin herself has refused to offer proof supporting her story that she gave birth to Trig. Whether it's ever proven or not, fact remains that if she did give birth to him, if the "Wild Ride" story is true, then she is beyond a doubt an evil person. If she's his birth mother, she placed the well-being of a high-risk DS baby way down on her list of priorities. It was more important to her to have a "baby born in AK" than it was to deliver a live baby.

So take your choice, Palin supporters: Was she America's most callous, stupid, uncaring pregnant woman? OR is she a liar and not the birth mother of Trig? You can't have it both ways.

Makes no difference to me whether she is or isn't Trig's birth mother. I'm perfectly content to think that she's a disgusting, evil idiot. (Don't tell me to keep it civil Gryphen. I could have called her a much worse name).

Sarah has surrounded herself with public affairs folks during her stint as Governor and since her resignation. If she did not like the rumors, she could have provided evidence to kill the rumors. If the rumors were about one of her children, most mothers would have done alomost anything to clear the kid's name. Sarah has every opportunity to clear the air on this lie and countless others. She could have disclosed the truth in her book or any number of interviews over the years.

so I keep wondering about the details at the hospital after the wild ride...Palin said she was induced. Since her water had already broken, I assume she would have been given pitocin or something similar to progress the delivery. I would also imagine that she was given an IV. When I had an IV, the entire top of my hand was bruised for a good week or so afterwards. Maybe a medical professional could weigh in here.

And you are right, if they induced she had an IV.
Another thing, at the risk of offending any prudish folks, I must say that there is no way a woman would wear shorty shorts days after birth - those mattresses they give you as pads would NEVER work under those, ykwim? Additionally, I wasn't sitting comfortably for MANY days after childbirth, but she went to WORK on day 3? Nope, didn't happen.
My daughter has DS, and we didn't know until she was born. It was a moment that changed my life forever, and changed who I am in my heart. I had to learn so much about acceptance and faith and hope and LOVE - but before I could learn those things, I had to experience grief and fear and anger and sadness that was so overwhelming I couldn't function for days. I had to process it all. My eyes were swollen for weeks from the tears. How the hell can Sarah look so fresh faced not only after childbirth, but after having a baby that brings about so many different emotions? She is not human if she didn't experience them, whether she knew ahead or not. Nobody I know who has a child with DS, and there are many, sailed through the early days without missing a beat. NOBODY.

I wish Levi would step forward and step up as the father of Trig. I believe the picture of him holding the really tiny infant was on or shortly after Trig's real birthdate. The dating of that photo was changed. The photo of him with the hospital bracelet was publicized well before Tripp's birth. Bristol and Levi were forced into signing away their child. There would not have been any scrubbing of FB, pics of Bristol, nor any transfers of High Schools, 'mono' - if there wasn't a good reason for it. Bristol had a child during the period in question, SP has the miraculous Trig 6 week 7.5 mo pregnancy. Unless Bristol's baby died, she is the mother of Trig. To think they would cover up such a tragedy and then adopt another infant, this one with DS, is just too monstrous to contemplate. The fact that the MSM continues to suppress valid questions about this family is exactly what the Palins need to play their games. Probably the real story will never be known, but this 'conspiracy' has 1000x's the legitimacy as the one about President Obama's birth certificate (which HP promotes all the time), and deserves to be reported. Americans need the truth about all of these candidates in order to choose the most qualified leaders. HP is grifting, too! I see very little real 'news' presented anywhere. Everyone I know, including conservative Republicans have said if Palin gets elected - I'm moving to Canada! This blog is a reminder to seek the truth and speak out. Thanks for the great writing, the humor, and the hard work it takes to keep at it.
