Make no mistake the death of Osama Bin Laden will become the defining moment in President Obama's presidency.

Today there is a lot of talk about how this news will affect Obama's presidency, and the devastating impact it will have on the Republicans who were hoping to recapture the White House in 2012.

Here is just a sampliing.

From the Time's Mark Halperin:

The President's speech to the nation, announcing that Osama bin Laden has been killed by an American team in Pakistan, was strong, proud and passionate, and proved once again that Obama is capable of reaching the highest levels of gravitas and consequence his job demands.

From one end of the American political spectrum to the other, there will be absolute consensus that the Obama administration's elimination of bin Laden is a huge victory for the president. It will reinforce the notion that Barack Obama will be very tough to beat for re-election.

Fox News reports how the news has, at least for now, created a non-partisan atmosphere of joy and unity in Washington:

Nothing has united Washington like the killing of Usama bin Laden since the very attacks he orchestrated nearly a decade ago.

Democrats, Republicans, liberals and conservatives are all toasting the strike by a 40-man Navy SEAL team that swooped in on the terror master’s compound, killing bid Laden and one of his adult sons. Relief and exultation at the end of the manhunt that began on Sep. 11, 2001 runs the political gamut from Pelosi to Paul.

So universal was the desire for bin Laden’s death and so effective was the mission to kill him – from authorization to head shot to burial at sea in about 8 hours -- that Congress can skip the usual gamesmanship and chin pulling that follows a major military or intelligence operation.

Even Dick Cheney had to grudgingly give the President credit:

Former Vice President Dick Cheney -- a vocal critic of President Obama's anti-terror policy since the end of the Bush administration -- extended his congratulations to the White House after the death of Osama bin Laden at the hands of U.S. forces. Cheney called the killing of bin Laden "a tremendous achievement for the military and intelligence professionals who carried out this important mission."

"I also want to congratulate President Obama and the members of his national security team," Cheney said.

All across the country jubilant Americans gathered to celebrate the death of America's own personal bogeyman, and to give well deserved credit to our President.

But for me I felt it was Keith Olbermann over at Fok News who summed it up best. (For obvious reasons.)

You can say all you want about unity and non-politicization of this event, but that ship sailed – and in the other direction – in 2002 and 2004. The GOP claimed all the credit in the world for anything that happened and anything that didn’t. President Obama was attacked before during and after his election for supposedly “weak” national security credentials. In point of fact, as of tonight his national security/counter-terrorism credentials probably jumped to Number 4 on the all-time Presidential list, just behind Lincoln, FDR, and Madison.

To that end, please join us in saying goodbye to Sarah Palin, whose career ended tonight. She sealed it by tweeting congratulations only to the military. Not a word about Intelligence personnel, and certainly not a word about Obama. Speaking of intelligence, rationalizing the death of Bin Laden under a Democratic president is going to test the limit of hers. Which ain’t gonna take long.

Could not have said it better myself.

Isn't there a GOP presidential debate tonight? Yeah...this should take the wind out of that.

I'm assuming this means that the folks who were on the fence won't be announcing...And that Mittens will be the sacrificial lamb. Sorry, Mittens, no White House for you...probably shouldn't have wanted it so badly. If you read Greek literature or Shakespeare, you'd know there are consequences for such blind ambition.

It says a lot about Palin's supporters that they make things up disregarding facts to maintain extreme distortions of black and white thinking.

I predict Palin will continue or escalate demonizing the POTUS ratcheting up her false allegations.

I am overcome seeing people celebrating in the streets.

SARAH PALIN is NO PATRIOT, if she was, she would get outside of herself and give credit, where credit is due. Thanks Sarah, again you have shown your true colors, just like after the Gabby Giffords shooting. You have ZERO leadership qualities, Alaska and the world is much better off without you in any office. Again, Sarah just go away and leave the important things to the grown ups.

The GOP leadership now has nothing to run on. In one week, the President took away their platform.

Obama HAS to show his long form birth certificate:check
Obama can't get bin Laden because he's weak:check
The GOP knows how to create jobs:check

This bunch of morons over reached on all points, and they are now suffering the fruits of their nefarious labors. The GOP is toast. Palin WILL run, because her ego is far bigger than her pompous pea brain, but Obama will not need to spend a billion dollars to beat her.

WTG Commander-In-Chief and our special forces!!

How fitting that Osama was dumped in the ocean only to be eaten by sharks. His head isn't pointed towards Mecca and there is no place for a shrine to turn Osama into a martyr.

The conspiracy theories have begun immediately of course and I wouldn't put it past Queen Jezebel to figure out some way to fuel them and at the same time try to slam our President with her opposite word salad. I'm equally happy that Palin has become IRRELEVANT!! 2 reasons to celebrate today!

Apparently a muslim can only be buried at sea if they die at sea and can't get to land expediently.

    http://uselectionnews.org/hucakbee-pawlenty-bachmann-romney-respond-to-bin-ladens-death/853125/

    Pawlenty congratulated Obama.
    Romney too

Huckabee acknowledged Obama made the announcement, but no congratulations.

Santorum - no mention of Obama, but reminded us that the threat continues.

Republican gay rights activist Fred Karger congratulated the CIA and military.

Apparently Jim DeMint didn't congratulate anyone, jsut acknowledged the monumental accomplishment.

a google search didn't find a response from Gingrich, or McCain (although I think I read elsewhere that he congratulated Obama).

So no giving credit to Obama isn't uniquely Palin.

Not sure what that's worth. Just thought it was curious.

I must say the national celebratory mood eludes me since the endless "War on Terror" has been duly announced as being protected and will continue to be prosecuted by the military-industrial complex without missing a beat.

Yet the root causes of attacks against the American "empire" will go unexamined and US militarism will go on unchecked at the expense of more innocent lives and at great cost to our society. The continued militarization of the US must bring great joy to the oligarchs who are the only ones who profit from it.

Osama bin Laden is a symbol—yes, but of what? There is a reason the US gets blowback and is has something to do with enforcing our economic and national aims at gunpoint.

Millions have died in US “interventions," that is illegal wars, conducted by the US throughout the word since the end of WW2. Chalmers Johnson, William Blum, and many others have written extensively on the subject.

I grieve for all innocents who have suffered at the hands of murderers. In addition to the deaths on 9/11, I grieve for all the SE Asians, millions, who died in the Viet Nam war. I also grieve for the many innocents killed in the US wars in Iraq....for those in Afghanistan, Libya, and for those in Central and S. America who died at the hands of US-backed death squads run by US backed dictators.
War begets more war and poverty, poverty begets more war...when will they ever learn?

When Bush was president, he had a chance to get Osama, but narrowly missed. Instead of keeping the information secret, he bragged about it, sort of like "Mission Accomplished." He gave away the information that they had traced Osama through cell phone signals. Well, he shouldn't have said anything at all because Osama had no telephone or internet at the compound.

Obama gave the go-ahead to attack Osama on April 29, Friday. He did not brag about it at the White House Correspondents Dinner, Saturday night. He was making absolutely sure that the guy they shot was Osama. There would be time to brag when they were sure.

I'm happy that the news preempted Trump's Celebrity Apprentice. I wish that it had also preempted Sarah's California speech, but it certainly took all of the attention away from her. Doesn't Sarah have another $100,000. speech tonight? Let's see if she can be big enough to compliment President Obama like the other republicans did.

The Taliban offered to hand bin Laden over and President Bush refused. The President of Pakistan offered to hand bin Laden over to Saudi Arabia and they refused--presumably because there is no hard evidence linking him to 9/11. He was a figurehead to Islamic extremists, not in control of planning or operations.

Bin Laden surely fit the need Bush and those like him have for a scapegoat in order to justify the illegal and immoral US attack on Iraq, and to justify the endless "war on terror" abroad and at home, where it means the diminishment of freedoms and civil liberties.

The US strategy is clear--to control the oil. That's why we don't go to war to "protect" the Sudanese. Sudan has no oil.

While you night think this is a great day for your country, it is actually the worst day ever for Republicans, as evidenced by the nasty, desperate, vitriolic and bitter commentary they are dumping all over the interwebs.

Right wingers are out in full force trying to deny that President Obama did something their guy did not do

. No matter what they write, say or spew, or how difficult it is for them to get over the burning sting of bitterness eating away at their ids, the truth is that the Republican meme about being tough on national security has been a joke ever since Bush ignored the warnings of an attack, but today, it is not even a joke.

    It is a distant memory.

President Obama joins just a handful of Presidents with top notch national security and anti-terrorism cred now.

This bears repeating because it is true and because it is the one thing the trolls do not want you to say.

    So say it again.

As an example of right wing bitterness, Sarah Palin only managed to eek out congratulations to the military, showing that once again she has no idea what just happened or how it happened and once again, she is too eaten alive by jealousy of the President to bother pretending to be an American even now (yes, dear, that was a dig at your AIP affiliations. You said you wanted to play, no?).

But why would we think she would change her tune and suddenly side with her country, when she has spent the last 2 years ginning up hate against her President, often on foreign soil and military bases.

    Way to go, Sarah.

Right behind her is Rush Limbaugh, who is currently chocking on his own hubris and hatred for his country.

Who wants Osama if the meanie who won the election gets him?

Heavens knows where Trump and the rest of the clown show is, but if the Republican statements are any indication of how today will go, it seems the Republicans love them some George Bush when Obama does good things.

Here is a quick premier in dealing with the right’s bitterness today:

    1) They will lectures you not to politicize terrorism. You write, “So, you’re flip flopping from when Bush blamed Clinton for not getting Bin Laden? Oh, and by the way, President Obama got Osama.” (Never let them steer the topic away from the very thing they are trying to avoid.)

I tend to doubt it. Today at C4P they are frantic. Just gone off the deep end in denial that it's coup by Obama having taken OBL out on his watch.

Anon at 11:31: "I'm sure if Palin MeanGirl was Prez, she's want to embalm Bin Laden in a coffin filled with pork fat and hams under a glass lid, and put him on display in the Capitol rotunda. Regardless of the further risk to troops in the field."

Well, it just wouldn't have happened under her watch. Remember, she and McCain repeatedly attacked Obama during the 2008 campaign because of Obama's position that we should target Al Qaida inside Pakistan, with or without Pakistan's permission.

5:52 am: "I predict Palin will continue or escalate demonizing the POTUS ratcheting up her false allegations."

I am really beginning to wonder if she isn't fucking with the wrong person. Obama has shown today that he has amazing patience and strategy. Who knew that all this time his team was pursuing bin Laden with a vengeance?? I wonder if he also has the IRS secretly investigating a certain someone's fraudulent financial doings!

I give Cheney two thumbs up for his words, and I dislike the man immensely. And, even though Clinton and Bush both missed two opportunities to take out BL, Cheney is right, you don't just get out of bed one morning and pull something like this off. I am sure that groundwork, and yes even mistakes made that were lessons well learned, all contributed to this final success.

Wearing those old Obama election bumpstickers pretty proudly today. Not that I am, er, um, taking any credit for electing the guy that took out Bin Laden or nothin'

I did pause for a moment today, however, to consider whether McCain would have been as successful at this moment, or would have screwed something up.

I have posted here a few times before. I haven't read all of the comments, so please excuse me for being repetitive. I am a former Green Beret who wants to first applaud the Seal Team for their successful mission. I was on several "ops" and they don't always go as planned.

Palin asked awhile ago why the President was "campaigning", etc. instead of paying attention to national affairs. Maybe he was multi-tasking and not letting the opposition know that they were in his sight line. The Seal Team also practiced their mission for several weeks!!!

Also, maybe the snarky quitter-gov didn't notice that SHE dropped ALL governor responsibilties to campaign, and then QUIT. Maybe you don't like the President, but he hung in there despite a lot of bizzare abuse. President Bush couldn't find Bin-Laden for 7 years. Makes ya think, eh!!

    I disagree.
It will only be defining if he ends the 4 wars we are in, last night. and uses the saved trillions to start to balance the budget and heal the economy.

If nothing changes with the wars or the economy, bin Laden, who was already virtually lost in the fog of all the other wars, unemployment, lost life savings, etc, his death, will soon be forgotten,as it will have no impact on the present or the future.

If you are long term unemployed and living in a car or you can't afford insulin to control your diabetes, and have no insurance and no job, it's "Who's Ben Ladin and why should I care?"

    @ mlaiuppa:

we will never really know, will we? all we can do is take the military's word for it. that in itself is kind of scary.

3:20 Not sure I agree with you. President Obama has worked on medical insurance (Bill passed) and the Repubs have tried to stop him on EVERYTHING throughout these past two years.

If you watched TV last night, you saw the 'young' population and I noticed signs saying "Latinos for Obama'.

The Repubs aren't going to know what hit them in this upcoming election. President Obama will get even MORE stuff accomplished before the completion of his first term..in spite of the Repubs and FOX News.

Yes, this is a very good point. And let's not forget that it was her successor who busted Alaskan militia members for planning terrorist attacks against Alaskan officials, while she and Joe Miller were feeding their hate and paranoia. And of course, her deep ties to an Alaska secession group.

That 'cult' supporting Palin will learn (and SEE) much about the Alaskunt when Bailey's book comes out this month. There will be emails published within the book that will support the information as well as document facts. We'll get to see the real 'black hearts' of Toad and sister Sarah in REAL action/operation.

President Obama is so far ahead of Palin and Trump with his brain power and organization. They won't know what hit them should either decide to run. Trump would be nothing more than a 'bully' in debates and Palin would be shown to be nothing more than an 'idiot'. They would not be good representation of the Republican Party.

And, you cannot tell me that both the Dems and Repubs aren't doing pre homework into the pasts of Trump and Palin should either decide to run in the primary.

I'm so proud that we have President Obama and his Administration governing the United States of America.

Hey, Sarah. Don't forget that our wonderful President Obama is in charge of the military.

Remember, you said your son was in 'combat' and it has been proven he never was.

I don't even believe you support the military as you say...it's a tool you have used for a long, long time.

You'd make a horrid president!!! Thank God, the majority know it.
