The pornography recovered in bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, consists of modern, electronically recorded video and is fairly extensive, according to the officials, who discussed the discovery with Reuters on condition of anonymity.
The officials said they were not yet sure precisely where in the compound the pornography was discovered or who had been viewing it. Specifically, the officials said they did not know if bin Laden himself had acquired or viewed the materials.
Reports from Abbottabad have said that bin Laden's compound was cut off from the Internet or other hard-wired communications networks. It is unclear how compound residents would have acquired the pornography.
But a video released by the Obama administration confiscated from the compound showed bin Laden watching pictures of himself on a TV screen, indicating that the compound was equipped with video playback equipment.
They also found Avena, the herbal Viagra substitute, in his cave. Who is this guy, a terrorist on the run, or an Islamic Hugh Hefner?
Hey I am not one to judge, but didn't this guy also have like five wives? Seriously when did this guy have the time to plan terrorist attacks?
And of course most people who enjoy a little porn don't set themselves up as some sort of quasi fundamentalist religious leader either. THAT might not sit well with the families of the people who blew themselves up in the name of Osama Bin Laden.
However in my opinion watching porn is the LEAST of Bin Laden's sins.
I wonder if he watched Nailin Palin?

The Arabs go to Vegas all the time and enjoy the offerings of prosties and drink. I don't judge what most Moslims do, but it's very hypocritical to see them indulging in sins that the slam us for having. I admire many of their teachings, but not the teachers.

ReplyDeleteThere must be some sort of "thing" that happens when you find yourself in the position of "spiritual leader," whether its in the Muslim world, or elsewhere--that has you believing you are "above" the lowly laws that pertain to the common schlubs beneath you.
That would explain all of this, including how we constantly find American "religious" types, getting themselves caught doing things not exactly in the realm of "family value" activities.
All the while screeching at the rest of us to shape up.

ReplyDeleteActually, I think it was here that I read that Osama was mistaken about the reward in heaven for people willing to die for their religion. It's not 72 virgins that they get in heaven, but one 72 year old virgin.

The lesson here should be the striking similarities of the rhetoric AND behavior of both the Fundamental Islamists and the American Christianist Taliban. Both are long on antagonizing others in their respective societies with their hateful, dominionist noise. Meanwhile, the nonsense and hyperbole that these two groups screech is exceeded only by their own hypocrisy and self-delusion. While I despise the efforts of these manipulators of truth, I truly pity those who are willingly ignorant as well as those unable to discern the truths because of their adherence to a false hope of a compelling future based on a bastardized theocracy. Hypocrisy and self-delusion are the best we can expect from these fundamental extremists. The sobering thought appears to be that there are more extreme right-wing here in the US than there are Islamists in the rest of the world. Of course, if the repugnant Repugs have their way, they'll eventually have the other one and a half Billion-plus moderate Muslims around the world hating the USA also, too.

ReplyDeleteOne minor quibble from a reader and herbalist - this comment, repeated widely across the web, about Avena syrup being an herbal viagra is nonsense. It's used much more broadly than that, for a variety of situations, and this assumption of its use is ridiculous. That said, keep up the great work Gryphen!

ReplyDeleteFirst, we don't have any real proof that it was bin Laden. Maybe, maybe not... but no PROOF.
ReplyDeleteSecond, we have no proof that the video of bin Laden watching himself on TV wasn't faked. *I* could do that, and so could anybody who worked on the graphics end of entertainment. I would hope that our exceedingly well-paid spooks and propaganda experts would do a convincing job of editing the clip.
Third, we have no proof that the porn stash was actually found inside the compound, let alone in a locked and sealed room only bin Laden could go. A): Those SEALS probably have a background of planting weapons or bomb-making supplies next to innocent farmers. B): How many young men and boys lived in the compound, worked in the compound, passed through the compound?
Next week some unnamed source will probably leak about illegal downloads or hacked game-site accounts (lawful evil 80th-level bugbear cleric).
Can we trust any of the dribbles of "information" being fed to a complicit media by a deceitful and desperate government? Nope!
The reported death of bin Laden is propaganda, and the little leaks of controversial items (ooooh! pot and porn!) are designed to keep it current in the news cycle.
The "cache of pornography" is a well known propaganda story, which the US has used to good effect on previous occasions - i.e. in Panama.
