When it comes to overcoming the odds and letting nothing stand in our way, this little dog could teach ALL of us a lesson.
Courtesy of Time Magazine:
Three weeks after a series of tornadoes blew through Alabama, leveling everything in their path, a family in North Smithfield returned to their damaged home to sift through debris. Miraculously, they found their missing dog Mason waiting for them on the porch.
With both of his front legs broken and his fur matted and dirty, Mason had obviously been through a terrible ordeal. According to MyFox Alabama, the terrier mix was hiding in his garage when the storm picked him up and blew him away. For weeks, his family searched but found no sign of their scrappy pup.
"This is probably the most dramatic we've seen as far as an injury in an animal that's survived this long," Phil Doster of the Birmingham-Jefferson County Animal Control Shelter told MyFox Alabama. "For an animal just to show up on someone's porch after this time was pretty remarkable, especially with the condition he's in."
We have seen a lot of amazing stories emerge after these devastating tornadoes, but for some reason I simply could NOT stop thinking about this one.
I don't have anything terribly witty or enlightening to add to this story, in fact I choke up so bad when I read it that I can barely type.
But I just thought it was a story worth sharing. Hopefully you agree.

Sorry for the randomness but I am giddy as heck to learn that there are in fact people of color who see through the democrats attempts to race bait and use racism to keep blacks (and other nonwhites) away from the republican party. There is HOPE.
ReplyDeleteAgree so much. Thanks J.
ReplyDeleteWhat's really sad is the fact that these owners did not take their dog to seek shelter with them, leaving him to fend for himself. I'm sorry , but this happens way too often in the South.
ReplyDeleteI have adopted several rescue dogs which have been transferred up to Northern Virginia from southern states. Apparently, they are not too keen on spaying and neutering, my chocolate lab was a breeding dog in Georgia who was dropped off at a local shelter after her owner was done using her as a puppy factory. She is the sweetest, most loyal, and well behaved dog a family could have and she was discarded like a worn out shoe.
Dogs only want love and companionship, and this is how they are rewarded...this family wont take him back...typical
The ideal way to cover her is from a feature timeline. It would take a blogger with a good car and a long lens and pitch perfect reporting skills.
ReplyDelete8:45 p.m. Bus parked at Welcome Inn in CheatinCheeks,Va.
Todd does pickup at the bar.
Piper paddles in pool.
9 p.m. Sarah appears on balcony with robe open. Appears to be shaving legs.
NEXT DAY
7 a.m. Family piles into bus for 2 bloc trip to Denny's.
8 a.m. Quick stop at local supermarket. Todd and Bristol load undercarriage with Red Bull.
9 a.m. Behind bus heading for Philly . . .
9:15 a.m. Breakdown! Family sitting on shoulder drinking Red Bull.
That made me tear up too. What a determined little dog!
ReplyDelete@4:05 - You're too giddy to write a cogent comment; we care about clear, lucid communication here at IM. Go back to the C4P, where your racism earns you golden North Stars.
ReplyDeleteThinking about the pain this puppy endured makes my heart hurt. I'm glad it survived.
ReplyDeleteI saw this the other day. It makes me sad that they continued to film him trying to move with two broken legs. He now has two blue casts on his front legs and is doing much better. It is a testiment to the spirit when we see this It reminds me of the pony who was hurt in Katrina and had to have her leg amputated, a devastating loss in a horse. She is doing great since experts stepped forward and made her a state-of-the-art prosthesis. It has a stamp on the bottom so that she leaves a heart (I think) every time she steps. I will post the link if I find it.
ReplyDeleteHere is the link of Molly the three-legged pony.

It's a happy face stamp on the bottom of her prosthesis.
@4:05 Wait. What?
ReplyDeleteOh, you're from the Urinal. Delusional, deep in denial, demented. Ok. Makes perfect nonsense now.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful story of the little dog that could.
ReplyDeleteYou are trying to destroy the Palin family. Admit it. You made Sarah humiliate the unwed, still a minor, pregnant Bristol by making her march across the national stage. You made Bristol sell her face for television. You made Willow B and E, guzzle vodka, and speed 100mph. Also, too, you kicked Willow out of school. You put Piper two years behind her peers in reading, writing, and arithmetic. You made Todd fall in love with Shailey Tripp.
ReplyDeleteAnd you made Sarah sleep with Todd´s business partners.
You did all of this, Gryphen. How do you live with yourself?
OT, but Malia's latest post is quite chilling.
ReplyDeleteAfter the dog struggled back to their house, the people said, "Oh sorry - can't keep him - someone else please take him." That is less loyalty than that plucky dog deserved, in my opinion. I could be wrong. Judge not, lest ye be judged.
ReplyDeleteWhat a tear-jerker! I agree with the comments about proper pet care. Our dogs give back so much love and energy... it's hard to even be in a bad mood and be around them because their love is unconditional. I'm a dog person, and cats seem to sense that better than dogs do. But our dogs like the cats when we visit friends or family with cats. In fact, they like any animal that will play with them, even a pig and goat at my brother's farm.
ReplyDeletePets should never be a temporary, happy impulse purchase.
Thanks for this, Gryphen.
ReplyDelete(and to Wake up America for the 3-legged horse)
So sad that, after the attachment this little dog has shown, they cannot take him back into the family.
My beautiful lab was left (by someone) in Hurricane Katrina...before she became mine.
Animal Rescuers are sort of like modern saints.

What 5:09 AM said.
ReplyDeleteActually, the dog is being treated for free by a local vet who offered his services to the shelter. At the time the family had no place to live and couldn't keep the dog. The shelter was temporary. They're working on their house (while staying elsewhere0 and by the time Mason is healed they'll be able to take him home.
ReplyDeleteReading between teh lines, I think they loved their dog but after the devastation they didn't have the money for his medical care. They were going to give him up so he could get the medical attention he needed that they couldn't provide. That Vet's offer allowed this family to keep their dog.
I only hope if my dog were in need of medical care I couldn't afford but he could have if I gave him up, I'd find the courage and love to give him up so he could be treated. Lucky for Mason, he got the surgery he needed and still gets to live with the family he loves.
Thank You for sharing this, When I first saw it on the news, it just broke my heart. People can learn so much from animals.
ReplyDeleteRarely do they use their offspring and other's offspring as nothing more than commodities to be exploited, they teach their young the basics they need to survive on their own,in this world and trust their abilities and insticts, once they're convinced, they set them free to make their own mark on the world.
On another note, Thanks, Anonymous 4:05. I admire urinal cake eating racists who are proud of the fact they are urinal cake eating racists.
Stay classy!
Gryphen, would you consider removing the troll comment that unfortunately is the first comment to this post? It takes away from the beauty of your posting.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for posting the story. I cried too when I first saw it.
