Okay can we finally agree that Anthony Weiner should resign now?

Twit pic taken at House members gym
Courtesy of the New York Daily News:

TMZ published a new slew of squirm-inducing self-portraits, including several full-body shots taken in the House gym - some clothed, some not.

Several show Weiner showing off his naked body holding only his camera and his privates.

Another source close to Weiner said the congressman was surprised it took two weeks for the gym photos to surface.

Weiner shrugged off calls from top Democrats - including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel and Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz - worrying more about what his rank and file colleagues think, a source said.

The source said one person Weiner would listen to is his mentor, Sen. Chuck Schumer. Schumer says he is "heartbroken" but has stopped short of telling Weiner to quit.

The other person Weiner will take advice from - his wife, Huma Abedin - is in Africa with her boss, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Weiner is still convinced Abedin won't divorce him, and is still telling people she wants him to stay in Congress, sources said.

The lusty lawmaker is afraid of what Clinton, who has some experience with misbehaving husbands, may be whispering to Abedin, the source said.

The last two weeks have taken a toll on the congressman, who isn't sleeping and spends hours pacing his apartment, friends said.

Look I am a good progressive, I know that it is unfair that David Vitter gets to nail prostitutes and keep his Senate seat, I get all of that.  But come on!

How is this helping the Democrats remain credible when it comes to calling out Republicans on their hypocrisy?

In my opinion there is NO way for Weiner to survive this, and as much as I may personally hate it, he simply has to respond to the calls for his resignation and take one for the team.

We have too much to do, and this is an enormous distraction.

I agree. He needs to go. He is a liar, but more than that - his egotistical narcissism could hurt the chances of other dems to get elected. And the fact that he doesn't seem to get that, or care if he does get it, is the main reason I think he needs to go.

    O/T but nevertheless a doozie!

“Shit, it’s over,” is all it said.

When I caught up with Rebecca on the phone later that day, we agreed that if you resigned after two years of a governorship, you were a ‘quitter’ in voters’ eyes. Your protests to the contrary would be futile. Your campaign was dead, especially against a preordained media deity like Barack Obama. Nevertheless, in an act that still angers my wife to this day, I rushed back to Los Angeles to do the seemingly impossible: be the lone defender of Sarah’s resignation on the next edition of The O’Reilly Factor. I hit a much-needed home run for her that night, but I no longer believe much of what I said back then.

No prostitutes, no glory-holes, no children.
I don't like what he did at all but I DO like him in his job. I say it is up to his wife to make that call.

F!@# the Rethugs. They are hypocrites regardless!

Weiner Reportedly Considering Resigning Amid Constant Scandal Coverage

The NY Daily News is now reporting that embattled Rep. Anthony Weiner is now considering resigning from his Congressional office (NY-9th District) after defiantly ignoring repeated calls for him to step down from office as a result of his recent sexting scandal. This news comes as a trove of embarrassing new images appeared earlier today, which surprised Rep. Weiner that it took two weeks to surface, according to a source cited in the report.

Latest Anthony Weiner Explicit Photos Taken In Congressional Gym

The online website TMZ has obtained the latest photos in the expanding Congressman Anthony Weiner collection, and this time the sexually suggestive pictures feature Weiner posing in various position in the locker room of the House gym. TMZ reports that the backdrop of Weiner’s various shots is the House Members Gym in the basement of the Rayburn House Office Building.

One week ago these pictures would have made everyone’s jaws drop to the floor, but given how much we all now know about the Congressman (and his body), these pictures are only slightly less shocking. TMZ also confirmed that these pictures were sent online to at least one woman. Yet no matter how many pictures are released, it seems Weiner is impervious to the embarrassment, and still committed to his decision not to resign.

  6. I still think the republicans are more repulsive than Weiner...! Republicans are denying food and health coverage to CHILDREN, for gods' sake- repubs. are taking away our rights -one by one- shipping our jobs overseas- repubs are denying rights to women- refusing to confirm Elizabeth Warren, who would be an advocate for the common people...

You're right, Gryphen, he needs to do the right thing. But let's acknowledge the Opposite World aspect of this where the good dog-fearing, bibble thumpin' conservatives tolerate the Vitters, the Ensigns, the Craigs, the Newts, the Sanfords, among others, for their outrageous behaviors, while the progressives demand Wiener"s... um... head for what, as yet, appears to be rather mild transgressions. But, yeah, he should go.

Rep. Anthony Weiner took numerous photos of himself -- clothed and partially nude -- at the House Members Gym and sent them to at least one woman ... raising questions about whether he used Congressional resources in his online exploits.

Look, he messed up and like SP, the early news just gets larger and larger. Some have suggested he's no different than Vitter or Ensign or others. In fact he is. He's a liberal and his political posture is to be a part of the people, not better or different. If he pulled this crap in a private company he'd be out the door. He needs to go, if for no other reason than progressives need to demonstrate they mean business as it pertains to moral and ethical behavior. Fighting to stay is a waste of time for me. He had a position of authority and a tremendous potential. He gave it up because he abused his power, took advantage of his name. He has to go and I feel no remorse. They can hold a special election and find someone else to fill that slot who might have a slightly higher moral place. And maybe his leaving will allow others to look more critically at those who remain and have abused their position. We are supposed to look at our elected leaders as role models. I don't have a shred of respect for him at this point

  11. It's interesting that Weiner has become the subject of such a media feeding frenzy. I think it's because most Americans are wary of internet invasion of privacy, and don't really understand how it works. At first I thought he wasn't guilty of actual sex acts, but I think now most Americans think he's a public predatory menace. Larry Sabato, the beltway conventional wisdom political scientist tweeted this yesterday:

Weiner represents a single congressional district, one that may be redistricted out of existence. Of greater importance is the redistricting that's taking place in California (front page news yesterday in both the LA Times & my local paper, the Ventura County Star).

My congressman, Elton Gallegly has been in Congress for 13 terms & hasn't faced a serious challenger in years. My district will be remapped, and will swing from an R4 (Cook PVI) to a solid Democratic one. And it's not the only one. CA may add 5 more Dems to Congress next year.

ITA, Gryphen. Thanks for telling it like it is about this.

I've always had mixed feelings about Weiner anyway. He's progressive on some issues, true, and we need progressives in Congress.

But Weiner and Palin are both as neocon as it gets when it comes to Israel. Their reasons couldn't be more different: she is an end-times fundy and he is a Zionist, but they both put Israel's "right" to start WW3 in the Middle East ahead of the U.S. welfare.

Weiner needs to go and he knows it. He's just delaying the inevitable and the longer he delays the worse it gets. I've lost all respect for him.

  13. Anonymous7:11 PM

I will just have to disagree...I hope Weiner stands his ground, what he did was poor judgement - but he still has the support of the people that voted him in - and at his age, he has a great body, and nice package. Watching the puritan reaction to something that a lot of people are doing, reflects some of the hypocrisy of this country. We saw this before with Bill Clinton. If he does decide to resign, I hope he does what Keith Olberman said, come back and run as a Independent. Dems need to grow some, Anthony had led the way here...

I disagree. Weiner has a passion for helping the middle and lower classes. We need him. When we start impeachment proceedings against Bush, I will consider supporting Weiner resigning. I think Bush's acts as a war criminal supersede this by a great deal. The Congressman has a problem. He was certainly stupid, but resign? Nope.

Good grief, the problem isn't Weiner, it's the friggen weak Dems who are so easily distracted. Vitter not only nails hookers , but he starts off the nasty wearing a freaking diaper! A DIAPER! And Vitter's only one of countless right wingers caught with their pants down. I'm so sick of all those disgusting family effing values hypocrites that I say, stay the course and let his own voters decide.

  17. Gryphen, no laws were broken. He is not a hypocrite who is always blathering on about family values. He did something stupid. But resign? No way!!
This is why Dems and Progressives never win. We abandon our own all the time. If he were breaking laws, maybe. But not for something that's just stupid!

  18. I don't care about his Republican counterparts. To me, his behavior demonstrates not only acute narcissism, but bad judgment amounting to disconnection from reality and calls into question his ability to do his job and represent his constituents. In that respect it is worse than discreet adultery, even if morally less culpable.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Weiner's continued presence in Congress is a distraction. His behaviors are disturbing and counter to a genuine progressive agenda. He was thinking with his weiner, we need to think with the larger brain.

He may be able to heal and grow over time and then return to public life in the future. But he is no asset to "forward movement" now.

  21. One more thing about Weiner vs. Vitter. Vitter was guilty of frequenting prostitutes, which is illegal in most of the country, but not in most of Nevada. Seeing prostitutes is an illegal act, but one conducted between consenting adults. I understand the repulsion of recruiting desperate women who have limited options into prostitution. But the prostitutes Vitter frequented were high-end, and were well compensated for being on-call to him.

Aside from being a lying public menace, Weiner exhibits a lot of the symptoms we attribute to Palin: lying, narcissicism, thinking that rules don't apply to him. He's probably somewhat of a gold-digger and thought that Huma's Clinton connections would grease the wheels to greater political glory.

While I personally feel that he will no longer be able to do his job effectively, and that he has had a decidedly negative influence on his colleagues ,I also believe that it if not him,it is his constituents in his district who should decide.I live in David Vitters state and he has never had to deal with his actions,so he could go on.But if I lived in his district I would be calling on him to resign.

I don't like the pics -- but it's not ILLEGAL.

I don't like the pics but he didn't 'buy it', didn't 'screw it' or whatever.

    It's up to his constituents.

If a DEM can't stand up to a bit of distraction -- they shouldn't be in fucking office as they have no balls.

The only reason Vitter is back in the news is because of this for comparison as the Dems are IMO friggin' whiney weaklings and didn't trully push for his resignation. Neither did they really push for Ensign's either. DEMS roll over like true weakings.

The Dems are fluffing their feathers -- against their own. Isn't that something to be proud of. NOT. It's time the fucking DEMS grew some friggin' balls. In fact, to the point if they keep this whine up - the DEMS will loose votes -- like mine and many others.

Those hear saying he should -- of wow -- are you Mr/Ms. Perfects -- what a joke. Truthfully -- it shows your weakness as you have no balls to stand up to the Rethugs.

If DEMS force him out -- I'm campaigning my area to get people to stay home from voting. That's how much this pisses me off.

Weiner is a liar, who is acting like a repug - look us in the eye and say anything, blame someone else. Who knows where the bottom of this pit ends? We certainly cannot believe him. For all I know, this behavior could be SOP for the house. Why else would a rookie from NY come in the door carrying on this way? Good luck to Weiner in the rest of his life.

Thinking that this man only has to answer to his constituents (and of course his wife) is yester year thinking. Look at what united us on this blog - old man McCain and his senile thinking. Who outside of people in Arizona had input on him. At this rate, we will need this blog for a very long time.

However, his actions totally undermine his fantastic histrionics on the House floor! I so enjoyed his passion and his grasp of the rules in the House. I will miss that very much.

He is intelligent, passionate in his political beliefs, and a joy to watch - in his official role as a congressman.

Unfortunately, I do find his basically harmless sharing of very personal photos with relative strangers a bit off-putting. It will color all his work if he continues in this role.

While it's true that he appears to have broken no laws, he still needs to go. I have been a staunch supporter of Anthony Weiner but his behavior and the subsequent lies have destroyed his credibility and my trust in him.

This story has distracted the country from the frightening plethora of destructive and dangerous legislation that the Republicans are putting in place and we need the attention to be on the important issues, not Weiner's latest crotch portrait.

I also have a problem with many of the Republicans who have done worse and are still in office, but the person in question at this moment is Weiner who needs to do the right thing. Yes, it is his personal life, but legislators and elected officials should be held to a higher standard. I am a teacher, and I often consider my position before making a decision about my actions. There have been time when I refrained from doing or saying something specifically because there was the potential for one of my students to see or hear me. Is it fair? Perhaps not, but it's part of the package when you accept certain public positions.

    I do have to disagree

Weiner is an addict who got caught. He is not the first nor last person to have an addiction. Whether or not he should resign is between him and his constituants, who so far have polled to leave him in office. A house investigation may eventually force a resignation.

The man screwed up - tried to lie about it - then confessed & apologized on national tv. to Breitbart of all people!

Right now the media is driving the bus - remember ACORN? Shirley Sherrod? Let the house investigation proceed - let the man quietly get back to work or into secluded therapy (out of the public eye) make him forfeit cell phones & blackberries.

  54. If Weiner's problem was alcoholism would you feel the same way about him? Often people go to treatment for alcoholism and go right back to work even though early recovery has quite a bit of cognitive impairment, you know like public defeders in AK. This is probably a sex addiction issue with perhaps a mid-life crisis or another addiction on top of it or some other problems. Now he is of course facing fear about the outcome of his marriage with a baby on the way and he is even being mobbed by friends about this. He has admitted the problem and asked for help which is a good sign. The pressure he is going through is preventing him from being able to see clearly. He needs time to get his head straight without pressure. Then he can make a rational decison. I want him to stay if sending pictures was all that happened. Bill Clinton and JFK may have done the same thing if they had today's technology. What happened to that outrage the left had about the attack on Clinton for his BJs in the White House? If I was Weiner's wife I would be very angry and from past experince I know the relationship would be over, but that may not be what his wife decides. One thing I find very funny is all of a sudden everyone is calling him a narcisist. Most politicians are narcisists seeking the spotlight.

    Gyrph,
Vitter is in the Senate, not the House. Somehow that makes his diaper-clad prostitute visists seem a bit worse. Any GOP asshole that says squat about Wiener needs to be slapped in the face with a giant "VITTER!" comeback.

What the hell was Wiener thinking? Did he honestly think that he could recklessly scatter pictures of his willy across the interwebs and that NOBODY would ever make them public?

It really seems as if Wiener had some weird desire to be caught. Why? Who knows, but he is smart enough to know that eventually these pictures were going to come out. WTF did he think was going to happen?

I think he could have survived this had it not been for the X-rated stuff. If it was just tawdry, he could weather the storm. No that he is acting in self produced porn, politically he is a dead man walkin'.

What a waste. He coulda' been a contender.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I guess I'm clueless. Why should Weiner's problem...and I do think he needs to get some psychological counseling immediately...hurt the Democratic mission overall? What impact did Vitter, Ensign, Gov. Stanford have on the election of Republicans? None. Vitter was reelected, SC elected a new Republican governor with sex scandals of her own, and Ensign resigned a long time after his scandal and only when the Senate was ready to expel him. There was no fallout from these scandals that took down other Republicans.

Weiner has a sexual scandal and he didn't even have sex. It doesn't sound like there are any victims. He didn't run on a family values platform and there's no hypocrisy regarding his legislative agenda. I must be missing something. Republicans are screaming and Democrats should be busy pointing out how the Republicans didn't call for resignations when it was one of their own who was in trouble. And Democrats should get Weiner some help. And, no, I don't want him to think he can ever run for President but his constituents may be willing to let him stay on as their congressman.

Let us not forget that Weiner is one of the best voices for progressive issues out there. Yep...he is a horn dog, but I'm betting they all are! What happened to those Boehner rumors of cheating? Please! Weiner fucked up with those pictures, but look at all the Republican fuck-ups! Vitter is still in office and he BROKE LAWs. I am in the minority that is standing behind him. I don't condone what he did but I do love his passion on the issues I care about.

I have a French friend I communicate with and she thinks we are so prudish. Her thought was who cares? If he is doing a good job and he didn't break a law, let it go. I tend to agree.

Weiner needs to go because his scandal turns off independents, and the Dems need independents.

Weiner needs to go because of his stupendously bad judgment. I don't care what people say, this is worse than having a discreet affair or seeing a high-priced call girl (Spitzer only got nailed for it because of his Mr. Prosecutor Schtick). It's worse because people understand that some men have trouble with monogamy and occasionally have sex with women who are not their wives. I don't think most people understand (nor do I) why a man in the public eye would send lewd pictures of himself to young strangers on the Internet. (Frankly, I don't understand how a grown man not in the public eye would do it). He didn't know these women - they could have been anyone and I'm not convinced that some of them weren't recruited as bait by Republican operatives. The recklessness and poor judgment is just beyond the pale.

He has to go because he is not going to be an effective voice any longer for progressive causes because being an effective voice means more than talking to the already progressive and independents are never going to see him as more than a Weiner joke.

I so agree with you about his name.

Even more sad is that he will always be remembered for WeinerGate.

He is tough though, I believe he grew up in Brooklyn?

I would be a bully, as well, if I had a name like that.

I worry about his mental health right now. He seems to be very ashamed.

People: Using "it's not illegal" as a standard of behavior for a CONGRESSMAN shows just how low you have sunk. If your standard is anything-goes-as-long-as-it's-not-illegal, then you deserve to have Sarah Palin as your queen.

Some of us are true independent voters, not party cheerleaders. We call out what is inappropriate and/or immoral regardless of who does it. (I'm talking to you Obama, and your illegal war on Libya.)

What other Republicans have done is irrelevant.
Anyone who defends Weiner comes off looking (and smelling) like a dick.

I’m disgusted with the Dems helping to keep this story alive on the news shows. I’m sick to death of him being portrayed as a predator or someone in need of treatment.
The women involved in these relationships were all adults. Voluntary participating adults. Equal opportunity sleaze, if it must be judged. The women are not prey, they are consensual partners. He got his kicks getting attention from them, and vice versa. Now those women who want it are getting their kicks (and payoffs) by getting attention from national exposure.Perhaps because he’s no longer available as an audience; or perhaps because their mission is accomplished.
Some of them were simply women who liked having attention from someone famous and/or powerful. I’m convinced at least one or two were bait. This ongoing leak day after day of more pictures is no accident.
Let’s leave the puritanical judgment to the fake family values theocrats. And leave the decision up to his voters.

Hypocrisy abounds! I certainly think this is an unnecessary distraction and that Weiner has some personality issues he needs to work on. IOKIYAR is not a standard I want to see members of the Democratic Party embrace. They demonstrate little, if anything that is IMO representative of the qualities we should value and support in our elected officials.

I also personally, hate being lied to. Much easier for me to accept and forgive bad behavior if an individual takes ownership and is honest about his/her mistakes, and lack of judgement. If Weiner can be honest with himself, and those he represents, he has an opportunity to chnage. If he can't be honest, history will repeat itself or morph into yet aother manifestation of the core problem.

America has serious issues to resolve, this is not helping. Of course our MSM loves the fallen, especially if they have a D by their name.

yes - Brietbart did a perfect job destroying Weiner's career. Big deal, the man was sexting. It was harmless - it's not a crime and it's not against the law.

The bigger crime IMO is that someone can hack an account, copy tweets and pictures and make them public - either through the media or the internet.

This has to be a lesson to the entire world - everything you do/write/say on FB, Twitter or on blogs such as IM is public information.

    I don't think this is a resignable offense. I don't.

Stupid beyond measure, yes. But resign? No.

Jeez oh pete. There are about 30 other congresspeople who are actively doing harm to this country and they're still there. Weiner takes pics of himself and sends them to other willing participants and he has to go? WTF?

Nope. Until you can prove he has done something illegal, I'll still support him.

There's a million more important issues in this messed-up country than his pictures. Focus on that, "lamestream media" (and they are)

Sarah Palin is awfully quiet about Weiner. Normally she would be all over a Democrat just for jay walking. Something is keeping Sarah quiet about Weiner, something is keeping Sarah from calling Weiner a pervert. What could it be?

hello...the stalker case where she is suing a 19 year old boy is all about sexting. She does it all the time - hence the two blackberries constantly in her hands.

When she was caught just before her resignation as governor, she blamed Willow and claimed she stole her phone to sext Shawn Christy.

Weiner's actions are compulsions of a sexual addiction. There is a distinction between persons who enjoy sex play with photos and a person who "can't stop",it is secret, acts out at work sexually alternately being loving straight spouse in public.

I firmly believe Wiener needs treatment for his sickness. The consequence of losing his job may break his denial.
No, let's not sink so low it is ok to expose one's self, masturbate or jack off to porn in the workplace.

We endured years of the Republicans trying to pin something on Bill and Hillary, we can survive this. Whether we endorse his behavior or not, this man has done nothing illegal or unethical. So you squirm when you see his pictures. That's you. So you are distracted. That's also you. Quit paying attention to it. Politically speaking, we really don't want to put another Congressional seat into play before the next general election. THIS TOO SHALL PASS.

This feels different from "falling in love" outside of marriage, hiring prostitutes to satisfy one's male urges, or wide-stancing in a stall. I'm not defending Republican hypocrisy---but this feels different from any of that. It was an extremely selfish, self-indulgent, idiotic and self-destructive GAME he was playing. That's the part that makes him unfit to serve.

Originally I was sympathetic to Weiner, but the turning point for me was that he asked his friends to lie on his behalf - that is to sully their own reputation, just buy him a little more time to spin the story.

Negative points also, for plain stupidity. More negative points for taking his pictures in a work place.

To all the female posters here defending Weiner - how would YOU feel if he were husband and you found out he was sexting strange women while you were pregnant? And then lied about it. And kept lying as more revealing photos were exposed.

What does that say about Weiner's character, judgment, and self-discipline?

    Nothing good.

Is this a man who deserves to be a U.S. congressman? IMO, NO. He's shown himself to be a fucking loser in more ways than one. And if he were my congressman I'd be telling him so.

I gave him the benefit of the doubt, but no more. This obviously became a sick addiction for him and he needs help. He can no longer be effective at his job because he's lost the respect of his colleagues and probably a lot of his constituents. Such a shame. And I feel awful for his wife.

    ReplyDelete
  84. The Skeptical Sister7:40 AM

I've *been* the wife, so I know exactly how it feels. And it went way beyond sexting. Told at least one of his online pickups that we were divorced and living on the same block - good friends - sharing responsibility for the kids. Damned if I didn't think we were still married(and monogamous). Not for long, believe me. This was in the old days - chat rooms. He had to use a scanner to send pics.
I still don't think Weiner should quit. If his wife is ok with him staying, then he should be quiet for a couple weeks and then get back to work speaking up and saying things I wish more of them would say.

I am really disappointed in all of the people who are answering the dog whistle the Republican controlled media has blown with Rep. Weiner. I find no better example of Republican control than this particular incident. Shame on all of you Democratic party people for rolling over and joining the republicans. If you continue to let them guide you as they are currently doing it will be tragic for this nation.

6:55, how would I, as a woman, feel? I'd divorce his ass, but I'd still want him as my rep. I said the same thing about Clinton and it's still true. Weiner fights the good fight and that's what matters. As for him losing the respect of his peers? Baloney.

Right wingers are fine working with their own happy pants comrades. What got Ensign was the ethics violations. Dems need to grow a spine. "Family Values" are right wing claptrap. Let them live up to it.

  89. An interesting thing: When Clarence Thomas was being investigated during his nomination years ago- a small group stood by him- Citizens United. Thomas was the vote cast in FAVOR of the recent disastrous ruling....shouldn't he have RECUSED himself??? The group wanting to have Clarence Thomas looked at more closely regarding these improprieties was none other than Anthony Weiner.....!
Politics is a nasty business...and knowing the dirty, filthy way that republicans do their business, I do have questions now about the whole 'Weinergate' story....What better way to get rid of your opponent than to smear him....better to get the focus off of YOU. I even wonder about the veracity of these adoring, flattering ladies..... It IS very odd about the timing of this... It's more important to me that Citizens' United be overturned...THAT is more important than photos. Let's face the truth: if you or I 'forgot' to pay taxes on half a million dollars of undeclared income, what would happen to us ..?????????? Anthony Weiner worked for the people...and Clarence Thomas STILL needs to step down.........THAT is our scandal.....the people need to take their power back from these corporate interests....
