New Jersey Republican lawmaker resigns after his wife sends racist e-mail to Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis.

Courtesy of AP:

Pat Delany stepped down from the state Assembly this month and said he wouldn’t seek a full term in November because of his wife’s missive to Lewis’ campaign, Burlington County Republican Chairman Bill Layton said. Delany originally cited an unspecified family issue as the reason for his abrupt resignation.

Delany and his wife, Jennifer Delany, are white. Lewis, a political novice who’s among the greatest athletes of all time, is black.

Jennifer Delany’s email to Lewis’ campaign said, in part, “Imagine having dark skin and name recognition and the nerve to think that equaled knowing something about politics.”

Layton said Pat Delany decided to leave office to shield his three children from “a hurtful and embarrassing public spectacle involving their mother.”

“Former Assemblyman Pat Delany’s wife inexplicably sent an offensive and racist email in response to a routine email from Carl Lewis’ campaign; her actions were inexcusable,” Layton said.

Delany said in a statement that he and his wife don’t share the same racial views.

He said he was sorry. “On behalf of my family, we sincerely apologize to Mr. Lewis for any pain this caused him,” he said.

Neither the Delanys nor Lewis could be reached by telephone for comment Monday.

You might think I would be used to it by now, but I STILL find myself shocked by the amount of racism that has bubbled to the surface since the election of Barack Obama. It is like the country was nothing more than a pus filled boil that the election pierced, thereby releasing the rancid infection lying just beneath the surface and allowing it to spill forth onto our airwaves and political landscape.

I want to feel badly for this guy, especially if it is true that "he and his wife don't share the same racial views," however that might NOT be accurate according to this article:

“Three South Jersey Republican lawmakers want to cut off public funding from colleges that enroll illegal immigrants.

A bill from state Senator Dawn Marie Addiego and Assemblymen Scott Rudder and Pat Delany, all R-Burlington, would take away shares of the state’s $850 million budget for higher education from any school determined to have admitted illegal immigrants to the student body.

Yeah that sounds like typical Teabagger code for "keep the darkies out of our schools."

I am wondering if both Rep. Delany AND his wife share these same racist views, but only she was careless enough to let the cat out of the bag publicly?

What do you think?

  1. I was told by a white landlord who interviewed me for an apartment that I didn't "look the way I sound over the phone".

I knew what she meant. It's been around and "they" let their hair down around us and kept it hidden from everyone else.

Now they don't care that last few elections showed the country it's ok to be a jerk.

I feel that the Racisim has always been there. Starting with the 2008 presidential election, however, our so called "Leaders" made it acceptable to voice these prejudices.

Now which one of our potential "leaders" was most vocal in legitimizing racisim?

All I know is that he can't have been a REAL Republican, because REAL Republicans NEVER apologize! REAL Republicans would smear the reporters who reported this as being part of some "liberal conspiracy", claimed the email was fake and "taken out of context" also, too.

So frankly, this whole story has me scratching my head... ;)

I live in Burlington county and Carl Lewis has been very devoted to his town for as long as I can remember. Always doing fundraisers for schools and working to install afterschool and community programs for kids. It is one of the lower income towns in our county, and predominantly African American. I find it despicable, the efforts that have been made to prevent Mr. Lewis from trying to serve his hometown that he is truly invested in making better.

If he resigned because his wife said something that made him look bad, I think that the same reasoning should apply to Clarence Thomas. His wife makes political statements about cases that might come before her husband, especially in the field of health care. Thomas does not recuse himself, even though his wife is heavily involved in the Tea Party end of trying to destroy health care.

Michele Bachmann said that her husband should not be an issue; she is the candidate running for office. However, when Michele speaks out against GLBT issues, and her husband's business is based on "removing the gay" he is involved. He is also involved because Michele speaks out against government handouts while Marcus accepts medicaid for dubious treatments to treat homosexuality.

Yes, the statements of the family do reflect on the public person. I hope that Sarah realizes that having Bristol out there is not going to be an asset for her campaign.

The one this badly affects, of course, is Obama and his family. They're bearing the brunt of it and doing a superb job of it. It must hurt them, and that in turn hurts me, but we're finally getting these loonies "on the record", so to speak, and we're examining them and calling them on it.

It amazes me that Jennifer Delany could be stupid enough to think that she could respond the way she did and that nothing would come of it. Did she think that her incredulity at a "dark skin[ned]" Lewis having the audacity to run for public office was actually an acceptable opinion to be voiced in public?

I think that the election of a highly intelligent and accomplished black man is extremely threatening to these moribund cave dwellers. If President Obama does well, it undercuts the centuries old narrative of the racists and exposes it as so much ignorant bilge. If he does well - or even if he simply doesn't fulfill their batshit crazy conspiracy theories of gloom and doom, they are proven to be assholes.

This is there worst nightmare come to pass. I think this current resurgence of racism might well be the biggest of the last gasps from these cousin humpers. We won't ever be fully rid of them, but we might be witnessing the last of the large cluster of racist acts that were ushered in by Obama's election.

    Completely off topic but

Eric Cantor, House Republican, wants to cut funding for the agency that tracks quakes.

Cantor's district is near 2 nuke plants.

Virginia just had an 5.9 earthquake several hours ago.

I was in route from Roanoke, Virginia to home in southwest Virginia around this time. Everything here on the farm is fine but there were problems in Cantor's district.

The nuke plants were put on generators.

So Eric Cantor - republican - just showed what a dumbazz he really is and Virginians should reward him by kicking his silly azz out the door.

  19. What is really sickening is his attempt to cover it up. I wonder about his claim "he has different views," but I was in a marriage where I found out I had no idea who I was married to and was shocked as my ex revealed who he was in the process. But I would not have tried to cover it up at that point.

It has been such a sad process to see just how racist this country is. I knew there were pockets, communities with members called skinheads, but the revelations that come day after day anymore are a very sad reflection on America.

What's even scarier is the move to attack education...I am reading Vonnegut after seeing Slaughterhouse Five was banned, picked up Mother Night and the same "ideals" are spoken clearly in that book--what I mean is he portrays the people that are racist just like what we are hearing now and that was written 50 years ago. I was going to post a quote a while back--it appears very little has changed in the "ideals" of white supremacy that was so grossly manifested during Hitler's legacy. Now they are all saying they are Israel's best friends...I hope the Jewish community has learned enough to see the two-faces speaking to them.

When is the black community going to see what the Republicon party truly is? I saw a bumper sticker last weekend..."Black, conservative and proud of it..." So sad.

I don't know the economics of higher education in New Jersey. How much of the per-student marginal cost is covered by tuition fees? To what extent does New Jersey subsidize each student?

It seems to me that an educated person is likely to cost the state less in the long run.

Let's not paint the people of New Jersey with the broad brush of the idiots we see on reality shows. Sarah Palin was on one, and no one thinks all Alaskans are loonies.

The gall of this woman to voice her vile opinion, when she's supported by taxpayers hard earned tax dollars.
How can one be married to someone who's openly racist and not know?

I kind of thought at the time that my uncle was a bit of an anomaly, and that surely the world wasn't still filled with racists. I have been proved wrong over and over in the years since then. Looks like more icebergs are headed Sarah's way...

New Sarah Palin Bombshells from the Cutting Room Floor

...Despite the pain and expense, some good came of this disaster. Because of the glut of leaked information and accounts of Sarah and Todd Palin’s behavior during the years Frank Bailey worked with them, we began to receive information and first-hand accounts from those in the know who had read the manuscript and wanted to speak of their own painful experiences with the Palins.

In all instances, we verified the relationship with our sources and the Palins and insisted on taped interviews or email transcripts. Many of these eye-witnesses had known the Palin family for dozens of years, going back to their early school years.

Some of these revelation appeared in Blind Allegiance (the eye-witness account of Palin violating campaign finance law), but most were cut by our publisher (Howard Books) at the last minute. After all, this book was Frank Bailey’s story and these bombshells were not part of his first-hand experience. It was a difficult call and one we debated long and hard, as the stories are as shocking as the other revelations in our book.

Over the next few days/weeks, The Mudflats will be reporting some of these stories, as told to the authors, directly from these confidential taped interviews and email communications. These accounts are too important to remain untold, especially in light of the fact that the former governor is still weighing her options regarding entering the presidential race in the coming weeks (not to mention the continuation of ridiculously fabricated stories that ignore reality-not just in Sarah Palin’s own books but now Bristol Palin’s whitewashed biography as well).

Our object in writing Blind Allegiance was always to disseminate information, reveal the truth, and ultimately let an informed public decide if this potential candidate is capable or worthy of holding the media spotlight, a place in the conservative movement, or the highest office in the land. It is in that spirit that we chose to share what we have learned.

What an idiot to say “On behalf of my family, we sincerely apologize to Mr. Lewis for any pain this caused him.”

I am betting that this caused zero pain to Mr. Lewis. Just a chuckle that the woman revealed herself to be such a jerk. Not that racism isn't serious. But give us a break: it is so lame to say "IF my racist comments had any effect on you, I'm so sorry."

He should be apologizing to the public for letting his wife off her leash. Inflicting her on the public. SHE should be apologizing for her words, if not her thoughts and intentions.

By the way, this apology is v close to the non-apology apology, which is "I'm so sorry IF what I said offended you." As opposed to being sorry for having said something offensive when that is the case.

In this case, no need to apologize for the nonexistent pain; only for the crude comment.

They need someone to blame,...anyone but themselves. The rich, white American has held the power in this country since it's inception. The very thought that "others" are now catching up and want a share of that power is absolutely frightening to these people. They are being "marginalized",...they want "their" country back.

Well,...it's too late to turn back the clock now. The sad thing is that no amount of re-education will help change these people's minds. Time and the march of generations is the only way things will get better. Eventually,...we will be rid of these racist, hating fools.

Of course they were threatened by him, he's writing the official anti-Palin book. This is how history works, the pre-approved narrative for the opposition needs to be heard. It's never quite the deep, dark underbelly of what's really the truth. This is why conspiracy theorists are labeled tin-foil hatters and such. Once you try to step out of the box of The Official Opposition, you will be attacked. Joe tried to minimize and belittle people, we all saw it. When someone has you wondering if maybe you didn't perceive things right, and maybe you should just trust what they say because they're the expert, you've been played. The scary part about this is that Pat Delany just didn't GET IT.

Either she was completely blind to how insulting her email to Carl Lewis was, or worse, she just plain didn't care. She even seems to have assumed nobody else would care either.

But then, LOTS of white people -- even the most liberal -- aren't always aware of the racist views deeply ingrained in us.

I'm grateful (and still embarrassed) that the first African-American man I dated had to very patiently explain the insulting bigotry behind some statements many whites consider innocuous and perfectly acceptable:

"You didn't sound black on the phone."

"Slavery ended over a hundred YEARS ago so they just need to get over it !"

Or the ever-popular "I'm not a bigot ! Some of my best friends are black!"

Now that I live in a primarily African-American neighborhood, it's VERY clear to me how many advantages and opportunities I had in life based entirely on the color of my skin which most African-Americans have been denied.

""It's New Jersey, say no more. What do we expect from a State that produced the Jersey Shore idiots? Although they are kinda brown.""

The actors and the producers are not from NJ.They auditioned to be on this show and work from a script. The lives they lead on the show are a fabrication.

The interesting thing about racism is that the targets of it always seem to overcome it. I was called the N-word in first grade (the first time I ever heard it uttered) as well as in Catholic Sunday school. That was in the 1960s and 1970s. My children even experienced it, from teachers and in comments from other students. When my oldest daughter was in elementary school, a white "friend" said, noticing her pink fingernail polish, that black people can't wear pink. To which my daughter replied to this rather large child, "Fat people can't wear pink either." That was in the 1990s. Even when she was in college there was a backlash against the "affirmative action" students at Wesleyan. That was 2010. My daughter and her friends responded by having a campus-wide teach-in. She subsequently graduated as a double-major with a 3.7 GPA. Affirmative action my ass.

The point is black people are watching the racial backlash with a mixture of disbelief and humor. While white people fill themselves up with anger and hatred, we keep acquiring degrees, education, and knowledge, building businesses and raising our children to be competitive and self-sufficient.

Is it necessary for you to lump all white people together in your statement? Is that really how you see all white people?I have raised my DD and we are raising my grand kids to just see people, not black people or white people.I have always been of the mind set that saying "I can't be racist because I have black friends " is racist,But now I feel compelled to say I have always had black friends, and white friends, and brown friends. So has my DD. My grand children also.In fact my middle grandsons best friend is black. My son in laws best friend is too. Many of our/their other friends are.I have a racist brother who was arrested for beating his DD when he found out she was dating a black young man in high school. They are married now, with beautiful children. My brother is a dead beat who lives in another DD's garage. So I know racists. You should maybe check the mirror yourself.

It is not necessarily racist to want to control illegal immigration.

At least these little moments continue to allow us to see exactly what Republicans talk like when they think no one is listening except other Repos.

It is just that they so surround themselves with people who think just like them that they occasionally forget that the rest of the world doesn't think or talk like they do.

Problem is that these snippets really are exactly how they talk and think about the rest of us.
